Hello Paul,
Looks like we have the same blood? My gg grandfather was Edward Ledwich O Mitford FRGS (1811-1912). Just returned from Mitford doing some research for my book and came across your post. I'm most keen to know of the Mitford/Bullock involvement with Gosforth Park racecourse. Would be great to make contact. My email is hughmitford@wanadoo.fr
All best wishes and kind regards
Hugh

Hello Helen,
Was wondering if EH did finally put a plaque up? Bertram Mitford FRGS was my great uncle. I'm currently consolidating the Mitford family/dynasty history for a book to be published at some future date. Thought to mention this in the book and perhaps, would you be kind enough to take a digital photograph for me? My email is hughmitford@wanadoo.fr
All best wishes and kind regards
Hugh

My father is Edward.
Unfortunatly I havn't managed to findout anything more about the connection.
Could you tell me Bertrams birth date as we have "bet.1880-1884" on the family tree and those of his parents, if you have them, as we only have aprox. dates for both,(sept/oct 1850 & bet.1861-1862).
Thankyou
Hi there

I have just seen your exchanges on this website, which I am new to. I am the grandchild of Bertram Claud Barton, so I guess we are cousins. I am the only daughter of Norman Jeremy Claud Barton, the younger of Bertram's two children. His other child, Joan Olive Barton, never had children so I am the only grandchild. Sadly both my dad and Joan are now dead.

Did you ever get any info on the Mitford connection? Like you, I was always told that there was a family link, but without the first hand detail you have.

It would be great to hear from you. I used to hear of Uncle Harold, and guess I must have met him as I was born in 1961, but don't have any memory of him.

Many thanks

Sue Hearn

Hi Nick, I know this a long time since your post in 2002, but if you do get to read it there may be a useful link. My grandfather's name was Bertram Mitford Bullock. He had a brother, Ralph Bullock who was an artist and art professor at Durham University who married a Dorothy Craggs at Seghill. In the family, all born at Morpeth, there were 4 boys and 4 girls, and of course Mitford village is quite nearby.
Nancy Mitford (born 1751) married William Bullock of Spital Hill. Bertram Mitford, later Osbaldson Mitford of Mitford Castle and Hunmanby teamed up with William Bullock (my grandfather's father, to set up the Gosforth Park racecourse.
We are going to Morpeth in October (2011) to do further research.

No doubt you have done lots of research since 2002, is this of interest?
Paul

Thank you for the information about applying for the blue plaque. I wish you every success. BM should be recognised. I'm intrigued you mention an 1895 census as these only take place every 10 years. Was this a typing area? If so which census would this be and do you have further details? It's known that BM and his wife were separated for a period so this could explain his wife not appearing (or perhaps she was abroad at the time).

It might possibly be of interest to know that Bertram Mitford lived in our house at 84 Westbourne Park Road, Bayswater, London W2 for some years. He appears with his wife Louisa and daughter Yseulte (age 3) on the 1891 census and than again on the 1895 one, but this time it seems only the 'head of the household' is named.
I have applied to English Heritage to have a blue plaque affixed to the house to commemorate the time he spent here and his contribution to literature. His best known book The Sign of the Spider was written whilst living here. EH will decide in October.

His two brothers became 32nd and 34th squires of Mitford Castle / Estate, Northumberland. I am the sole surviving descendant on the direct, mainline of the orginal Mitford family who can trace their links to Mitford, Northumberland, back to the 12th century & 1066. Bertram also had a son Roland Bertram Mitford (1891-1932). If by any chance you learn of any further information concerning Bertram, apart from his many books and life in South Africa, I would be most grateful if you could share it with me. Many thanks and kind regards. Hugh

Stephen:

I've published a good bit on Bertram Mitford. My biographical Chapter 2 of *Colonial Voices* (UP of the South, 2010) has my best information. The book is probably in a university library near you. But I don't have nearly the amount of information that I would like, especially family letters. I haven't had the time to put out a wide request for sources, but in as large a family as this has become I'm sort of stymied. By the way, there is some Bowker material in this chapter also. Let me hear from you!

Best, Gerald Monsman, Professor

Bertram Mitford was in South Africa during the Anglo Zulu war, January 22, 1879. Apparently he visited the battle field of Isandlana shortly after the famous battle where the British were defeated by the Zulu. In this account he gives detail of the battle field after the battle. If anyone knows of the book where this is written, I would appreciate it if I could be advised how to get my hands on it. Another point of interest is that my great, great, great grandfather married Anna Maria Mitford in 1800. They later came to South Africa in 1820 and the family has grown quite considerably.

My grandfather was Harold George Mitford BARTON and when young my father (b.1928) Knew the 'Mitford sisters' and was told they were his cousins. In fact he used to play tennis occasionaly with Deborah Mitford (befor she was married). And he was told that John Lake had married a Mitford and that was why the Mitford was in his fathers and grandfathers name and was going to be in his but for the behavior of some the sisters.
I Barton

This referred to a John Luke BARTON who I didn't manage to track down!

Apologies for any misunderstanding, as I can't remove it from the previous message,

Fiona

I have searched every which way through my considerable [15,000+] MITFORD events, and no connection, other than Portsea, can be found.

I have studied the family at length, and would ask what makes you think that he married a MITFORD?

The use of Mitford as a forename, was not uncommon, and may have been after one of the Godparents, with MITFORD's in the area, this is quite likely.

He had at least two wives, possibly three, and it is not certain if this is further complicated by a lover!

Below is the Pedigree without footnotes, if you would like the full Word file, please email me direct at mitford@btinternet.com

Regards,

Fiona

=============================================

BARTON PEDIGREE

Gen 1: Samuel BARTON, m. unk, and they had:

Gen 2: Ezelias BARTON, m. unk, and they had:

Gen 3: James BARTON, m. unk, and they had:

Gen 4: James BARTON (1682-1759), m. Joseph George MITFORD (1791-1875), b. 1 May 1791, at Mitford, and chr. at Mitford on 13 Jun 1791. Captain in military service of the East India Company (H.E.I.C.S.). He m. Anne MAY, also Anna (1788-1875+), at Kingsland, Hereford on 28 Aug 1816, He was living at Merlyn’s Grove, Carmarthen, South Wales in 1835. Both Joseph and ‘Anna’ were living with their daughter Agnes and her husband, Rev John J. SMITH on the night of the census in Apr 1861. In 1871 they were living with their daughter Marianne and family. He died 2 Sep 1875 at Nottingham, and his widow, Ann, received his pension from the Madras Military Fund. They had issue:
7.1.	George Newnham MITFORD (1817-1866), eldest son, born 25 Jun 1817; Senior Chaplain, Bombay Presidency. George translated and edited The Chronicles of a Traveller: Or, A History of the Afghan Wars with Persia, in the Beginning of the Last Century by Tadeusz Jan KRUSIŃSKI, published in 1840 by James RIDGWAY of Picadilly, London. The tome was interestingly dedicated to “Thomas NEWNHAM, ESQ, this volume is inscribed, as a small token of esteem, by his affectionate relative, The Translator.” He m. Sarah SAXON in 1843, probably in India. George and his wife both died at sea on the same voyage, he on 19 Jan and she on 4 Jan 1866. They had a son:
7.1.1.	Godolphin Newnham Osbaldeston MITFORD (1844-1884), born at Mitford [allegedly – see following] on 16 Apr 1844; he died a Mohamedan in 1884. A descendant or relative would appear to be this chap found on page 40 of the London County Suburbs Directory of 1917 at 88 Brookbank Road, Lewisham, London SW, being: Godolphin Mitford ROWE, b. Alton, Hampshire in 1895. In an article The War in Heaven (in The Thesosophist, 1881, pp 24, 36, 67, 69), Godolphin was born in India, the son of a Missionary, and converted to Islam, adopting india dress, and the name ‘Mirza Moorad Ali Beg’ it goes on to state that “he was a most extraordinary Mystic, of great learning and remarkable intelligence.” Another manuscript worthy of mention is Initiates of the Theosophical Masters by K Paul JOHNSON, if only for the following statement, “MITFORD, whose surname seems almost synonymous with English eccentricity, was without a doubt the most bizarre of the Mahatmas’ chelas,” oh to be normal! From the same publication [p 39] it states that he was serving as Chief Cavalry Officer of the Maharaja of Bhaunagar when he met Col OLCOTT and HPB (Madame BLAVATSKY) on 20 Jan 1881. JOHNSON also states on p 68 that Godolphin died insane.

I have them traced back a long way safely to the MITFORDS of Mitford [1200's], and before that the BERTRAMS of Mitford [1066 and prior in Normandy, France].

I would be moost interested to learn more of this highly colourful branch of the family. Please contact on *mysurname*@btinternet.com ;o)

Regards,

Fiona Mitford
Wife on Mitford Silverware

Hello,
I am researching some silverware for the Art Gallery of South Australia. At sometime based on the coats of arms on the silver this particular item belonged to a Mitford. The cup also has the coat of arms of his wife. These are Gules (red) a chevron ermine between three combs ...
Has anyone here seen these arms or may have any idea to whom they may have belonged. The Silverware dates from the 1650
's but the engraving may be later. There is also a coat of arms from a member of a Nicolas family on the same cup.
Regards
Jeff

dear Fiona
Hope you are still interested in the Mitford surname and in providing information from England. Please contact me if you read my message. My husband is the son of Eustace Reveley Mitford, who arrived in Australia in 1839 (in the Katherine Stewart Forbes). I have difficulty in finding more about his own parents, John and Sara and his siblings. Also his connection to the Baron in the family.
thanks in advance
alicia
