Hi Bernadette
Good to hear from you. This is what I know to date
A Charles Moate had a son with a Maria Brennan in 1859 Hobart, Tasmania. Charles was married to Maria Duggan before Maria Brennon and had children with her too.

This son born in 1859 was called Joseph Samuel Moate and also known as Joseph Samuel Wilson Moate or Joeseph Wilson. He died in Hobart in 1916. His first wife was called Martha Dance and they had 4 children together. Martha died early on and he remarried to a Annie Lovell and had another child.

Charles was born in about 1828 (UK??) and died Hobart 1884. I have been told that the Moates were of French descent.

Regards
Catherine

Do you have any more details for the Moates?
I have Samuel Moates in my tree - any idea of date or where they came from? Quite possible it's the same family.
Regards
Bernadette

Mote, Motes, Moat, Moates, etc....GA, USA

Hi-

My Mote(s) line is through my maternal grandmother. The latest Mote in my family was Miranda Mote born in July 1837 in GA (maybe Warren County) to Joseph S. Mote (born around 1812 in GA or SC) and Elizabeth Barton (born around 1810 probably in Warren County). Joseph and Elizabeth were married 2/23/1834 in Warren County.

I found them in the following census records:
1850 in Pike County, GA
1860 in Butts County, GA
1870 in Gwinnett County, GA
1880 in Spalding County, GA

Children as indicated by the census records and subsequent death records are:
Elizabeth J., born c. 1836; maybe married Wiley Reeves and lived in Spalding County???
Miranda, born July 1837;m. Thomas Payton Rice, lived in Fulton Co., GA. Died before 1910. Burried in Stone Mountain.
William J., born 1841; m. Mahala(maybe Norton??), lived in Spalding Co., GA, d. 1923.
Martin, born 1844; CSA casualty???
Seaborn Riley, born October 1845; m. Lou Phillips and Mattie?, lived in Bibb Co., GA, d. 1923.
Charles O., born 1848; CSA casualty???
John Wesley, born 1849; m. Hester Caroline Johnson- lived in Rockdale Co., GA, d. 1927.
Joseph J., born 1854, m. Georgia Whaley, lived in Gwinnett Co., GA, d. 1928.

Joseph S. Mote worked on and off in farming and cotton mill work.

Any additional information on this family is much appreciated! Input from other decendants (cousins!) would be great. Let's help each other untangle this Mote(s) family and get the record straight.

Mote is a difficult name to research for the obvious spelling variations. I have found them recorded as Mote, Motes, Moat, Moates, Mate, Mates, Mole, Moles....etc. Add that to the multiple William's, Silas's, Levi's, and Joseph's and it's one mixed up genealogical record!

Happy Hunting y'all!

Lynn in SC

Alma Louise Moate

I am researching Alma Louise Moate. I know that she married John Earnest Mundy. She attended LaGrange. She lived in Georgia. They had two kids, John Earnest Mundy and Martha Carolyn Mundy. I've heard a story that she got hurt in college swinging from gym bars and landing on concrete. Her mother's maiden name might have been Bass. If you have any info please respond.
Thanks,
Elizabeth
