I am the son of Loren and Helen Moberly of Spokane Wa. My Grandfather was John Alfred Moberly of Buford, Ohio. John Alfred is buried in Couer D'Alene Id. next to his brother Othello. Othello died in 1917,and left behind a wife, Hazel Gladys (Baldwin) and two children John and Helen. I am finding little record as to there whereabouts, I have a reference that Hazel died in Pasco, Wa in 1978, and nothing on the two children. Does anyone have any information on Othello, Hazel or the children? Othello was said to have died falling of of house boat in Harrison, Id on June 23, 1917, but I haven't found a death certificate to confirm that.
Thanks, John

Was william Moberly, the son of ewan moberly, born in 1888? Was he also known as Lactap or was that someone else or perhaps his wife? I have no info at all on William or his children or other descendants and would be very pleased if you could fill me in? I think he had several brothers eg Adolphus, Daniel, Edward, Joe and sisters Fresnine, Adelaide, Electa, Clarisse but dont know about any descendants. Is there a list / tree somewhere I can refer to? Thanks, Andrew

Thanks for clarifying.

We haven't yet been to Jasper to see where Henry lived - but hope to in the next year or two.

It would be good to understand why Henry left his family in Alberta. Some make it sound like he abandoned them. Others make it sound like it was reasonable. I'm thinking that the reason is simply unavailable to us because we cannot talk to him or Suzane.

My husband, Grant Moberly, is a great grandson of Henry John Moberly by another wife (Francois LaFleur). HJM's son was George Allen Moberly (1879-1964), who was father to Russell F Moberly (1928-1986), who was father to Grant.

We have been to Duck Lake and I'm attaching a photo of his gravemarker for you (photo credit: Judith Rempel).

Regards,
Judith (aka judii2)

officially walter wishaw didnt have any descendants, as my grandfather william knight is listed as douglas wishaws father.
but the timeline doesnt fit.
marjorie would have already been pregnant when she met william. hence the quick marriage i assume.
and there is no way she got a divorce from walter as there was only a year between them marrying and william and her marrying, and it took around a year and a half to get divorced back then.
i dont know who i spoke to in canada sorry, but i know they were descended from walters second or third marriage.

and as i said why would she put douglas second name down as wishaw if it wasnt walters baby.

you should be able to see my tree which shows all the links.
but it was a walter wishaw moberly.
he was a canadian soldier whom she met at kirkdale military hospital. we think she was working their and think maybe he was a patient at the time.
anyhow there is such a short gap between her marriages their was no chance that she got a divorce.
and the child born to her whilst she was married to my great grandad william knight, would have in fact been walters. this is confirmed by the fact that the childs middle name is wishaw.
if you would like to look up walter moberlys family you can look for them on wikipedia. walters grandfather henry john moberly is quite well known.
needless to say the moberly family did not no about marjorie. he moved back to canada without her and later remarried. we have no idea why he didnt take her with him. maybe it was because of the baby? who knows. but if their was bad blood between them im not sure why marjorie would give their child his name.

The dates I have are:

b 8 Dec 1883 (though I do also see a source that states 5 Dec 1885)
d 21 Feb 1972 Vancouver, British Columbia

BTW - I should have credited the great contributions made by Peter Mott of Australia in assembling Moberly information world-wide.

Francis (Fanny or Fannis) was dau of Henry John Moberly & Frances LaFleur. Henry can be found here: http://www.moberlyfamily.ca/anc25.html

For Walter Lawrence, I see 7 children (Walter, Mary, Henry George, Thomas, Mildred, Clarence).

There is a lot of information available about Captain (Royal Navy) John Moberly and his descendants. In my database (I use Brother's Keeper), I have 194 direct descendants. Then there are the spouses...

A few of the details that I've read on this board are incorrect (relationships and specification of names).

Let's start here:

Generation I
------------
Captain John Moberly m. Maria Foch and they had 9 children:
1) Mary Sarah (m Harford James Jones-Brydges)
2) George (m Fanny Maria O'Brien)
3) Walter (m Blanche Compigne)
4) Henry (aka Harry, Harvey) John (m several times, certainly: Susan/Suzanne Kwaragkwante, Francoise/Frances LaFleur, and a Marie/Mary (perhaps 2!), and possibly Philomene Rat
5) Clarence (perhaps known as William as well) Wishaw (unmarried)
6) Arthur (m Caroline Jean Bourchier)
7) Sophia (Sophie sometimes; died young)
8) Frank (m Georgina Agnes McIntyre and then m her sister Mary Violet McIntyre)
9) Emma B. (never married)

II. Henry John Moberly had as many as 16 children with 5 "wives"

With Susan/Suzanne (an Iroquois)
1) Henry (known as "Ewan")
2) John Edward
3) Louis

With Marie _____
4) Emma
5) twin
6) twin
7) George

with Francois (Frances) LaFleur
8) Frank Arthur
9) Alice Mary Sarah
10) Walter Wishaw
11) George Allen
12) Annie
13) Fannis (Fanny)
14) Katie Martha
15) Dolly

with Mary
?

with Philomende Rat
16) Antoine

Generation III: George Allen Moberly m Auora Evelyn Tate and they had 7 children:
1) Frances Evelyn May
2) Harry John
3) Una
4) Robert (known as Bert or Bertie) William
5) Winnifred (Queenie) Gwendoline
6) Kenneth George Allen
7) Russell Frank (not Frank Russell)

Generation IV: Russell m [living] and they had 2 children - both living. Grant is one of them. You are correct that Grant is an Accountant (CGA) in Calgary.

I'm happy to exchange more. I've crafted the data in various ways and some can be found here: moberlyfamily.ca [hope that url isn't suppressed by Ancestry.com]. If you click on a name (in some cases), you'll find details and images. See for instance: http://www.moberlyfamily.ca/f13.html

Likely the last thing I have to say today is that Capt. John Moberly's mother came from an incredibly distinguished past. I've been able to trace and trace and trace and trace it back, using peerage records online then N European royal stories... to the 2nd century AD.

So - back to you, Andrew. You're Grant's 4th cousin - but I only see an Andrew Hamsworth who married a Moberly. No Andrew as a descendant of Bishop George. Details, details, please.

I'm an avid (can you tell) genealogist with a lot of materials online. I think e-mail addresses may be suppressed but you can find my on my own family turf at rempelfamily.ca and we could continue to discuss "offline".

PS to Darla - how do you fit in?

Judii I’m very interested to hear from you. I reckon your husband-to-be and I are 4th cousins. (Can you confirm his full name is Grant Allen Moberly, and that his father’s is Frank Russell Moberly, and grandfather’s is George Allen Moberly?)

In fact I believe I sent Grant an email in November 2007, but am not sure he ever got it as I had no reply…. Here it is:

QUOTE

----- Original Message -----
Sent: Thursday, November 22, 2007 11:35 PM
Subject: Moberly family

Hi Grant, we must be cousins although I'm not sure how - unless you are the son of Frank Russell Moberly born about 1953, son of George Allan M who had 6 children, son of Henry John the fur trader, son of John M of the Royal Navy? I am the great great grandson of George Moberly, the Bishop, who was John's brother. That makes us 4th cousins.

I have a long list of Moberlys descended from John and George's parents but don’t have much info on the Canadian branch. I'd be very interested in learning more about them all.

Let me know if I am right in any of this?

Andrew

UNQUOTE

I’m not sure why I think this, but is Grant an accountant? Does he/do you live in Calgary? Funnily enough I have an aunt there, but she is my mother’s sister ie not of Moberly blood!

A year or two ago I was in touch by email with Don and Gwen Moberly in Ontario – his father was Bernard Eric Ray Moberly, son of Frank Moberly, who was another son of Captain John Moberly ie a brother to Grant’s great grandfather Henry John Moberly. Hence I have basic info on Don and Gwen’s children and grandchildren. Maybe Grant is in touch with them?

I also exchanged emails with Paul Bernard Eric Moberly a few years ago – his father was Walter George Moberly, another son of Bernard Eric Ray Moberly (see previous para). Grant may be in touch with Paul too?

I believe there are many Moberly descendants of John Moberly’s two sons Frank and Henry John living in Canada. Apart from Don and Gwen, and Paul, I am not in touch with any of them. Are you/Grant?

Best wishes, Andrew

I'd love to see how you all fit into this tree. My husband-to-be is Grant Moberly, son of Russell Moberly, son of George Moberly, son of Henry John Moberly (who was father to Francis), son of Captain John Moberly.

What I see from the family details I've assembled for Grant is that Francis/Walter had 7 children (Walter, Mary, Henry, George, Thomas, Mildred, and Clarence Gould).

Between them, I have 13 children, 16 grandchildren, & 6 great grandchildren.

Surnames that direct descendants hold (in addition to Grould): Snowden, Barnett, McBurney, Light, Fearon

The Moberlys have a distinguished past.

Kevin, Your email sounds eerily like a story my grandfather (who was born in Indiana in 1904) used to tell me about our family. Of course, he got most of it wrong to some extent. He told me he had a grandmother named "Trueblood," (close to "Truax")who was a full blooded Cherokee Indian. The fact is his mother's grand mother was Nancy E. Moberly, b. 1814 in KY, m. John Talbott in Lawrence Co., IN in 1841, and d. 28 Mar 1886 in Orange Co., IN. Does any of this fit with your own research? I'm trying to develop a family history for Nancy Moberly Talbott, but have had no luck to date. Thanks.

Do you know if she had any brothers or sisters? If so, there may be a link to a Moberly I am researching. I am trying to track down the relatives of Nancy E. ("Elizabeth" perhaps?) Moberly, born 1814 in KY, but who married John Talbott in 1841 in Lawrence Co., IN. She died in 1886 and is buried in Orleans, Orange Co., IN. The 1880 census indicates Nancy's parents were both born in South Carolina. Nancy and John Talbott had four children, all boys: James F., Edward H., John W. and William H. Only William(Hillary)Talbott married and had children. The children's names possibly may be clues to those of their grandparents, as often was the case in those days. Anyway, their names were Charles Verner Talbott, Susan Moberly Talbott, Winifred Talbott, and Marguerite Rebecca Talbott. If you are aware of any "Moberlys" of similar age as Nancy, and whose family shared any of these names, please let me know. Meanwhile, I'll keep an eye out for Mary Ann and Andrew Wilson. Thank you, Jim Brengle

I am a descendant of Elizabeth Moberly who married Sebastian Swartz; their son Rezin Swartz; his daughter Susannah Swartz-married A. J. Hillin Lucas County, Iowa, in 1857. After A. J. Hill died, Susannah married Charles E. Smith 1866 in Olathe, Johnson County, Kansas. I am descended from A. J. and Susannah - their son R. S. Hill - first may have been Rezin, middle name Siegle (Segal). My father was George Albert Hill - born and died in Salt Lake City, Utah.
