HI,
I have one Robert Moffat in my tree born 1883 in Lockerbie Scotland. He is my greatgrand father. As far as I know there are no Irish connections not to say there are none I may just not have expanded that far. The spelling of the surname in my tree seems to be "Moffat" or "Moffitt" not a strech for the "i" to become an "a".
mike moffat
Hamilton, Ontario
Canada

Hi, I was interested in the names of your Moffatts. I havea Robert Moffatt, born Ireland in 1819, immigrated to Quebec in 1834. No info on parents but they were born Scotland if you can relay on census info. Robert married a Elizabeth Ferguson. Parents were Thomas Walker and Irvine Walker. Robert and Betsey had a daughter they named Irvine. I wonder if the Irvine came from a last name of a relative???

Did William or David move to NY or NJ? I have Margaret Golden, born 1800 in Ireland. She came to NY at a very young age and later married a Moffat and lived in NYC. We don't know what happened to Moffat, but Margaret later married Patrick Moore. Margaret had a number of children, but the only names I know are Julia (who married a Smith), and Thomas, born 1824 in NY, married Isabella McPhail, and then died in NYC in 1857. Any connection?
These are the Moffat's I was looking for! Thank you so very much for your help!!! I have had a hard time finding my 2X great-grandfathers parents. I knew he was born in Larkhall, Lanarkshire and just recently found that he had 3 sisters Isabella, Maggie & Marion. Finding his sisters allowed me to find the passenger list where they came over in 1887 and ship name. Only his mother was listed on the passenger list and I was having a hard time locating her maiden name or husbands name. Again I can't thank you enough for the help!

Sincerely,
Kari

Hi - there's a James Moffat born Beith, Ayrshire, and Marion Moffat with daughter Isabella 10 months on 1881 census for Larkhall, Lanarkshire. Marion born about 1858 in Larkhall. There's also a marriage on ScotlandsPeople for James Moffat and Marion Thomson in 1879 in Larkhall. James Moffat's parents - William M. and Margaret Lourly; Marion's parents Robert T and Isabella Mitchell. So the naming of grandchildren might fit. Do you think these could be your Moffats?

I'm a Moffat descendant too from David Moffat and Catherine McLaren of Lanarkshire. There are lots of us!

Hope this helps.

best wishes

Pat
Re: Robert Moffat

This sounds pretty close...Do you know if that Robert lived in Victoria, B.C, Canada for quite a while? I have him living here from at least 1908-1940, then I found him on a vessel to Seattle in 1941, and couldn't find much else about him after that. I started with the City Directories, and from that I only saw him listed with a wife once, around 1938. I've become quite interested in Robert Moffat, he seemes sort of elusive and hard to find information about. I wanted to find out how he died and where he is buried, in case it is in Victoria. But I just really wanted to get a good idea of who the first person to own our house was. Our house is 100 years old this year. Would it be possible to look at the family tree with Robert in it? I'm new to ancestory.ca so I'm not sure how things like this work. Thanks so much!

I have a Robert Moffat in my family tree that was born 17 Sept 1886 in Scotland. He died Jan 15, 1965 in Canada. He was married to a Jean McLaclan? Maybe married in 1919. He also served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in WW1.
Perhaps this is whom you are looking for?

Oh how I wish we were related - I would give anything to find family of this man before he married. He did have a son James, my GGrandfather, but James was born in Huron County, Ontario in 1867. MY William married Jessie Thomson in Ontario and had a daughter Elizabeth (b. 1863), daughter Ann (b. 1864), son James, son Walter (b and d 1870) and a daughter Jessie (b. 1872). His wife Jessie died just a few days after daughter Jessie was born.

Unfortunately there are several Moffat's living in that area, and NONE that I have been able to connect to my William. I feel like the only solid link is his birth date, and who knows if my GGrandfather got that right when he buried him near Hannah, ND in 1903. (It is the date listed on his cemetery marker).

I've been trying to find where this man was born for some time, and I HATE brick walls!!

I don't believe he was married before his marriage to Jessie - I think there would have been some family story about it. To have an album full of family photos with great clues on the back and not know who they are is sure frustrating!!

When I have worked on Swedish and Norwegian history, I have had a lot of help from SwedenList and NorwayList. Is there such a thing for Scotland?

Wish we were related!!
Nancy

Hello Nancy,

I wonder if your GGGrandfather William is also my GGGrandfather, who had a son James, born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1858, (I think). Maybe the woman in the picture is my GGGrandmother! James, my GGrandfather, married in London in 1883. Edinburgh, Glasgow are in Scotland, Carlisle is near the Scottish English border.
Do you know what children your GGGrandfather had? Do you know if he had any children before he left Scotland?
Kay Broadway (nee Moffat)
Moffat from Scotland to Canada

I am trying to find the birthplace of my Scottish GGGrandfather - born William Moffat on April 24, 1829. Father, James, mother, Elizabeth (unfortuntely no surname given for her on his marriage certificate). He was living in Turnberry Township of Ontario by the time he married Jessie Thomson on Oct. 17, 1862. Unfortunately there are several William Moffat's with father James, and a few with mother Elizabeth - I just can't find records of one born April 1829. I don't believe he was born in Polmont, Stirling, Scotland, possibly Dumfries or Dumfrieshire? But have no luck finding record of him there either. I don't know any siblings names, but have a very old photo album with a photo of what COULD be him with a woman and it was taken by "J.Thomson" on Elcho St in Peebles. Someone has written "Wm. Moffat esq." on the back. This appears to be a family album, was with my great grandfather's things, and other photos were taken in Edinburg, Berlin, C.W., Elora, Toronto, Milnathort, Carlisle, Ridgetown, C.W., Hollin, Wishaw, Glasgow, and Galt. I have no idea where most of these places are, but wonder if they could be clues as to where he was born. I would really appreciate any help or search ideas.
Nancy

My Moffats supposedly born in Scotland also. My Moffat "Thomas" married
"Jane Pickering" in Down county, Magheralin parish Ireland at. 1817. They
ended up in Horton, Nova Scotia, had children Wesley, Charlotte, and
William, possible "John". Then my line went onto Boston, MA. On William's
death cert in Boston it states his parents were from Scotland. I do not
know where though. I had doubts about Jane Pickering, thought maybe she was
born in Ireland.

Christy

Katherine, I am researching the Moffat and Little families. My Moffat family came from Scotland, don't know where, and were living in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. My Robert Moffat married Mary (Last name unknown) and they had a daughter, Elizabeth (Bessie), who was born in about 1814 in Tullylig, Stewartstown, in County Tyrone. I believe, but cannot prove, that Robert was from Scotland. Bessie married first William Milligan and had 3 children, Anne (born 1836), Joseph (born 1839) and Margaret (born 1841). Bessie married second, Robert Morrison and had 2 more children, Sarah and Elizabeth.

Bessie and William Milligan's daughter, Margaret, married James Little Jones, son of Samuel Jones and Eliza Little. Margaret and James had a son, Robert Jones, born 1864 in Tullylig, Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

Does any of this look like a match with your line?
I don't have much on my Moffat/Moffatt family. Only that his name was Robert Moffatt, his wife was Mary, and they were the parents of Elizabeth Moffat (Bessie). Bessie was baptized in the Parish of Donaghenry, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland in 1814. Older members of the family, now deceased, indicated that Bessie was born in Scotland, but I believe she was born in Ireland. I am sure the parents were born in Scotland.

A family story is that Bessie (Lady Moffat) was the daughter of a wealthy land owner in Scotland and she ran off to Ireland with the coachman. As with many family stories, I have never been able to find any fact in this story.

Please contact me directly at plantinga@aol.com so we can explore Robert Moffat more thoroughly.
Amy, where was your Moffat family from? My Robert and Mary Moffat had a daughter, Elizabeth Moffat, born about 1814 in Tullylig, Stewartstown, Cookstown, County. Tyrone, Ireland. I don't know anything more about Robert and Mary but believe they were from Scotland. I believe, but have no proof that they had a son George born about 1810 in Scotland. Elizabeth Moffat was my great great grandmother. I have information on her, but can't seem to find out about her parents.

Any chance my Moffat's tie in with yours?

Many thanks,
Joan R.
Hi Joan,
i have been trying to trace a Robert Moffatt that was born in Ireland. No idea where. He was Presbyterian. On one census I thought he said his parents were born in Scotland.
He Imigrated to Quebec Canada in 1834 or 1839 it was hard to read. I could find no other family members that might have come with him. It seems like most of the children were named after his wife's family as I found quite a bit of info on them. Any clues would be appreciated.
