Hi Annette

Have just looked up my tree and yes there is Martin Monaghan married to Esther Naggs in 1873. I have 3 children:

1)Mary Esther b 1878 who married Archibald Campbell

2)James Daniel b 1880 died 1886

3)Amy Ann b 1882 married Arthur Lawrence and died 1956.

I don't have any children listed from Arthur and Amy as they were married after 1911 which is where the searchable archives start.

I am descended from Daniel and Mary's eldest son John. They actually left him in Ireland and sent for him when he was 14. In 1868 he married Julia Matthews, she was the daughter of a convict. One of their children was Catherine Monaghan and she married Eugene Cremin in 1894. Their daughter Catherine (known as Kate) was my Nanna. Kate married into the Quinn family and moved to Wollongong where we have been since 1935.

Regards, Angela
Hi egregora1,

I can not believe I haven't come across this thread before, I have been chasing our family history for several years now,
Daniel Monaghan was my great great great grandfather,
his son Martin Monaghan my great great grandfather,
his daughter Amy Monaghan my great grandmother and she married into the Lawrence lineage.

I am not sure if this helps you any, most if not all the graves are at Braidwood Cemetery. (Amy at Rookwood)
Also at Braidwood is a convict in my line, Richard Knaggs who had a daughter Esther. Esther married Martin Monaghan. Really interesting stuff.

Richard boarded convict ship Mary Ann II in 1835, settled near Goulburn and the rest is history. Let me know if you would like more information on Richard Knaggs / Naggs.

Oh and thank you so much for Daniels history prior to Australia, I only had the death certificate too, Co Clare.
Thats amazing,

Cheers
Annette

Alice had 10 boys and my grandfather was the 4th son and William Married Florence Churchill and they had 3 sons and 2 daughters their name were Harry, William, Frank, Gladys(my mother) and Doris and they imigrated to Australia in about 1920. Frank second name was Monaghan. Hope to here from you so we can put a few more peices together as all Mums family have now died as Mum was the last one and she died in 2007.

Charles P. Monaghan, b 1861, Maryland

Seeking info on descendants/ancestors of William Cruse (b. about 1780, Maryland) and his wife Elizabeth, also of Maryland. They are listed in the 1850 Census in Baltimore, Maryland. Would also like any info on Unknown Monaghan, born about 1840 in Ireland and married to Elizabeth McLaughlin of Maryland.

William and Elizabeth Cruse had the following children:

Rebecca (b. about 1822),
William (b. about 1823), and
Charles (b. about 1828), all in Maryland.

Rebecca is my 3rd great grandmother. She married Joseph McLaughlin (b. 1810, Ireland) about 1830 in Maryland. Rebecca and Joseph McLaughlin had the following children:

Elizabeth (b.about 1841),
John (b. about 1843),
Joseph (b. about 1845), and
Jane (b. about 1847), all in Baltimore, Maryland.

Elizabeth is my great great grandmother. She married first a Monaghan, first name unknown, about 1860 or 1861 in Maryland. Unknown Monaghan was born in Ireland. It is believed that he probably died in battled during the Civil War but we have no proof. She married second Henry Fisher (b. about 1842, Maryland) before 1870 in Maryland. Henry Fisher's father was born in Bavaria, Germany. His mother was born in Maryland.

Elizabeth and Unknown Monaghan had the following children:

Charles Patrick (b. 14 Jan 1861, Baltimore, Maryland).

Charles Patrick Monaghan was my great grandfather. I sure would like to know more about his family. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Cathy Monaghan

I was looking thru these posts and I saw a reference to a Martin Monaghan. I have been told by a relative that my great grandfather Martin was a sheep farmer in Sligo. His son Patrick (my grandfather) had at least 2 other siblings Katherine and Mary and I believe they came with him (Patrick) to the states...I think via Pennsylvania but they settled in the Bronx...any way this is what they told me. My dad was born in 1923 so I am thinking Patrick may have been born in the 1890s or so? He passed away when my dad was ten.

My grandfather, Martin Monaghan, was born in 1895 "house 1 in Knockdoe Beg West, (Lackaghbeg, Galway) Parish of Lackagh, Dioc. of Tuam, Turlow, Ireland". His wife was Annie Jane McCormick.

His siblings were Thomas (1884), Maria (1885), Hanora (1887), James (1889), Delia (1891), Patrick (1893), John (1897), Margaret (1899), William (1901) and Daniel (1903).
A Daniel Monaghan, son of James Monaghan and Susan Powel, from Saint Sylvestre, Quebec, married Margaret Hern, daughter of Michael Hern and Margaret Prirl, of Saint David's in Canada, on April 25, 1888 in Cheboygan according to the Family Search web site.

It's possible, but I have no proof, that this Margaret Hearn, was the daughter of Michael Hearn and Margaret O'Neil (not Prirl).

St David may not be a parish but a road in the Saint Sylvestre or Saint Patrice de Beaurivage area of Quebec. A Michael Hearn lived on Lot No. 71 on Rang St-David in the 1860's and 1870's. His daughter, Margaret was born May 2 and baptized May 4, 1862 in Saint Sylvestre. I do not know what happen to her but several of her siblings immigrated to the Alpena and Cheboygan area of Michigan.

I just came across your post from nearly 4 years ago. I'm not sure if you are still looking, but I am descended from some of the names mentioned.

John McDermott Monaghan, son of Etta Bell Clark & Edward Joseph Monaghan of Cumberland Co.
Monaghans of County Leitrim - Patrick Monaghan c1854
Hi there,

Currently seeking information on my Monaghan family.

My gt-gt grandfather Denis Monaghan (1881) moved from Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim, Ireland to Bo'ness, Scotland with his older brother Patrick (1879) some time between 1885 and 1900. They were born in CORNANEANE, KILLASNET, County Leitrim. I know that their father was Patrick Monaghan (c1854) and their grandfather was John Monaghan (c1830).

Patrick c1854 married a Catherine in Lurganboy, Co Leitrim in 1874 (also Monaghan, her father Michael / Mick Monaghan of Lisnabrack, mother unknown). I have been using the various online databases (some free of charge, others very costly) but have come to a blank. I realise that many of the records were destroyed, but am hoping that someone recognises some names / dates etc from their own tree.

I have spoken with my grandfather who thinks that the family originally did not come from Co Leitrim - perhaps Sligo or Mayo as these are names he can remember his grandfather talking of.

I think that John Monaghan / Monahan c1830 married either a Bridget MacHugh or a Matilda Rooney / Runian.

I cannot be sure of all the names, but I think that Patrick c1854 and Catherine had the following children:

Anne 1860
Bridget 1853
Bryan 1853??
Daniel 1853??
Denis 1857
Edward 1856??
James1856
John 1858
Mary 1855
Owen 1861
Patrick 1854

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Michelle Monaghan

Charles P. Monaghan and Maria Louisa Bryan of Baltimore

My great, great grandparents of Charles P. Monaghan and Maria Louisa Bryan of Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

Charles P. Monaghan, son of Unknown Monaghan (probably James) from Ireland and Elizabeth McLaughlin of Baltimore, born about Jan 1862, died about 1925, married Maria Louisa Bryan about 1880-90 in Baltimore. Elizabeth McLaughlin married Henry Fisher of Baltimore before 1870.

Maria Louisa Bryan, daug. of Thomas R. Bryan and Emily Higgins, both of Maryland, born about May 1866, died about 1936-46.

Who was Charles' father? Was he James Monaghan? Who was James Monaghan and who are his ancestors? He would have arrived in the US most likely between 1840 and 1860, probably in Baltimore.

Thanks,
Cathy

Hi Narelle

In your post you say "Mary Anne Clarke the daughter of John Clarke and Mary Anne Connell marries Henry McCurley, child of that marriage Honora McCurley who marries John Monaghan b. 1878 d.27 Feb 1906 Cobar, NSW."

The John Monaghan who died in Cobar is in my tree. He was the child of John Monaghan and Julia Matthews. He married Eliza Cosgrove in 1904 in Cobar and they had one child, John, born in 1906 a few weeks after his father John died of acute nephritis.

Regards, Angela
Hello there Ijomama, its great to hear from another Monaghan.

I will have to check with a cousin regarding the Kane reference - from memory - the marriage could be to a Catherine Kane c. 1890.

Regarding Monaghans - Daniel Monaghan b.1814. County Clare, Ireland. I dont have any parent information at this stage - however, will have to check this also with others to see if they have more.
It is a possibility for your John born in Paisley Scotland c. 1925 and the Irish Monaghans to be from the origin.

Keep in touch and let me know how you go! Happy researching!

Cheers

Hi I just wandered onto this site, intrigued by all the TV commercials with ancestry .com

My father's name is John Haffey Monaghan born in Paisley Scotland. He married Mary Jane Kane, my mother and they immigrated to Ontario, Canada in the early 1950's.
My brother is John Monaghan and my sister's name - Rosemary Monaghan. Rosemary died of breast cancer in 1985.

I moved from Canada in 1977 and reside in California.

Is that the missing Monagahan/Kane link you are looking for ?

Hi

Yes my Great Grandmother was Mary Monaghan Devlin, I was aware one brother remained in Scotland. My mother Mary Devlin Ferguson O'Hare gave me newsletters which I believe were written by yourself. Joan Flaherty was my mothers cousin, sadly Joan passed away last year.

I have a photo of my Great Grandmother with my mother but I believe you already have that photo in one of your newletters. Attached is a copy of the ships passenger list showing William Patrick Monaghan on his voyage to U.S.A. Its quite difficult to read:

No 99 Wm Monaghan aged 47 - labourer - Place of birth Derry - meaning Londonderry.

I will have a look to see what other photo's I have that maybe of interest to you. If you have any photo's please can you email them to me. I would love to see a photo of William Patrick.

I sent email with attachment to you rentonnite@yahoo.com but it failed.

Kind Regards

Eilish O'Hare
Your great grandmother must have been Mary Monaghan Devlin?
My great grandfather was her father, William Patrick Monaghan, and yes he came to Illinois after his wife died. He lived with his son there. My grandfather, John Joseph Monaghan was Mary's brother. There was another son/brother, Patrick Monaghan who remained in Scotland, he lived his final years with his son John and Agnes near Alloa. I visited relatives in Scotland in 1991: Esther Ramsay and her daughter, Joan Flaherty; Ann Monaghan Duffy, and my maternal relatives at Glendaruel and Balfron. Do you have pictures? I have some that may interest you. Please contact me via email at:
rentonnite@yahoo.com

Hi mandytony_1.

thanks for this post, it looks exciting but i am unsure of the connection through John and James Monahan - unfortunate because it would be kinda spec to have a bushranger in the family......

I had a look through my files and found a reference to Mary Anne Connell b. 1822 Loughill, County Limerick, Ireland. and John Thomas Clarke b.1795. County Limerick, Ireland who had a child that, one that i had referenced, didnt know about the others Mary Anne Clarke b.04 Aug 1854 Mt. Elrington, New South Wales, Australia. d.25 Jul 1913 Braidwood, New South Wales, Australia. This is where my records end with John Clarke and Mary Anne Connell.

Mary Anne Clarke the daughter of John Clarke and Mary Anne Connell marries Henry McCurley, child of that marriage Honora McCurley who marries John Monaghan b. 1878 d.27 Feb 1906 Cobar, NSW.

I had recalled another group of Monaghans with a Kane marriage so will have to check this out..
Never found Birth place in Ireland due to records being destroyed in Ireland, though I think he was born in County Tyrone (Northern Ireland. His daughter Mary his only daughter to remain in Scotland was my Great Grandmother. I know William went to Illinois to join his son/daughter after his wife died. I believe he died in U.S.A

robert monaghan (aprox 1890)

i hope someone can help please i am researching my grandparents on my mothers side. my grandfather was a robert monaghan born around 1890 in ireland (my mum is sure he came from ireland even though he was called jock!!) he was married with a young family before he left. He met my grandmother and had six children with her but never married. so the children took her name(Millings)

I have found that he died in huntingdon in 1940 in the workhouse there, but can't find anymore about him.

i just wondered if there was a connection in ireland as someone may have a robert monaghan who left his family to come to england in their family tree who has never known what became of him.
thanks
sue

His mother was called Marion and died when he was a child,he was then taken care off by his aunt Lizzie. His father was a baker. They lived in Stephenson while he was a child.Do you think there is any connection with your family. There was some connection through marriage to boat building on the coast.
