Anyone have any information on a Richard Monks from Dublin, born August 1831? He immigrated to Rochester, New York in 1853 and married Mary Tolan, born June 1833, also from Dublin, Ireland. They had several children, Mary, Thomas, Patrick, James, Jane, Helen, and John. I would love to find out where exactly both Richard and Mary came from in Ireland, and who their parents were.

Hello, I am new to this. I'm a Monks, but I am in France. My people come from North County Dublin.

I think you will find that the Irish Genealogy site has improved very much. When I came to it at first, it was very bad - useless, really. Now it has helped me a lot.

I hope you find what you seek.

David Monks

I don't know for a fact that he had, but I would be surprised if he didn't have a brother called James, and possibly one called Patrick. John is always a possibility too. The names William, James, and Patrick were traditional in our branch of the family: my Dad (James) had two brothers, Patrick and William. Patrick (Uncle Paddy) called two of his sons James and Patrick. His brother William called his eldest son J.P. Brendan (I haven't asked Brendan what the JP stands for; I have assumed it's James Patrick.) My grandfather (Patrick) had a brother called William who died in infancy, and had a son called John who died at the age of 3.

Well, I think i am also descended from Phillip and Margaret Monks/Monk. I am trying to peice together the info of my great great grandfather. I believe he was the grandson of Phillip and Margaret. His name on the 1870 and 1880 census is Albert. Later he claimed his name to be Charles. He died in either 1904 or 1909. My family always has referred to him as Albert John, but I found him in two places as Charles. Any help would be lovely! We live near Ionia so I hope to visit.

I am the Mother of Corrina Martin that post this on the board. My name is Pattsy Orsburn, and the Monks that came over from Ireland name is unknown. My Great-Great-Great Uncle that wrote the Book on or about Northern Arkansas, and Southern Missouri, never gave a name for his Grandparents. Just that his Grandfather came over and was in the war, and then went to NC and married a English woman. The name of the Book that William Monks wrote was called Northern Arkansas, and Southern Missouri.
Hi Gerald;
My name is Pattsy S Orsburn, and we have a Monks Reunion in May it is on Memorial Day week end. Sunday before Memorial Day is the Dinner at Robbers Cave State Park. This Monks Reunion has been going on for years. I was lucky to have been at one that the Eli Monks descendants from Tenn., was there, and I got a Eli Monks Book. I do know that Jack Towry from Tenn., that is working on the Eli Monks Genealogy wrote another Book on History about the countys in Tenn. I would have to look at my address book to see what town that Jack Towry lives in. I have written him, but haven't received any info back. Just remember Memorial Day week end of the Monks Reunion at Robbers Cave State Park 12 miles south of Quinton, OK.

Re: Monks from Ireland

I'm afraid my information only goes back to William Monks, born 1812. He was my great great grandfather, whose father's name was also William.

James was one of three names (the others being William and Patrick) that appeared in generation after generation of our branch of the family. My own father was James. I have a first cousin called James. My great grandfather Patrick had an older brother called James, who inherited the family farm, which was in the family from the 1500s until 2008, when it was acquired by Fingal County Council in North County Dublin. The last owner of the farm (about 100 acres in a small townland called The Nevitt) is also James (Jim) Monks, and is my second cousin once removed. So you and I may well be related.

Unfortunately the earliest Irish census on record is that for 1901 (available free on-line) because the place where records were stored was destroyed in the civil war of 1922-23. If you search the census for 1901 for Monks in The Nevitt, you'll find that all three households that constituted that townland were owned and occupied by Monks families.

Parish records for North County Dublin are available at Swords, but you have to pay to get records, and can get information about people who are not your relatives. Very recently, some parish records are being put on-line and are available free of charge. Through those, I have found family members (not Monks, unfortunately) in parishes in inner city Dublin. (http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/) I am hopeful that North County Dublin will be available before too long.

Good luck with your searching. If you find anything of interest, I'd be glad to hear from you.

Sorry, Lynda, I don't know of any Peter Monks in our branch of the family, though the name James appears generation after generation, and our family were from The Nevitt in North County Dublin (the Parish of Lusk). Have you checked the Irish census returns for 1901 and 1911? There's no charge, and there is a lot of information, particularly in the 1911 one.

Looking for a Jane Monks Marriage and Death in Dublin

I have been looking for the parents of a John Ward born in 1806 in Dublin and it has been a near impossible task. I ordered his Birth Certificate and it said his Father was a John Ward, but did not list his Mother. I have managed to find a John Ward Baptised in 1810 in Skerries in Dublin and his Parents are listed as John Ward and Jane Monks.

I have no idea if this Baptism is him or not. I do know that his Mother died when he was, I believe, a Teen. This caused him problems and he stole a gold pin and was sent to Australia as a Convict. John's Father, John Senior, sent a letter to the Court Begging for Clemency and in that letter had his address listed as 45 Cook Street Dublin and listed himself as a Labourer. Because John was a Convict there is a possibility that the Birth date on his Death Certificate could be wrong.

I don't know if Jane Monks is the Mother of my John Ward, but I would like to find out. If anyone has any advice on how I can find out if it is her it would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to know how I can see or purchase Jane Monks' Marriage Certificate. I would also like to see her Death Certificate, but due to the fact that I have no dates for her Birth, Death or Marriage I know that it could be impossible to find.

Kind Regards,

Tammy

Bill, my Monks side settled in Pinckney in 1835 and Richard and Rosa Monks were the parents of that immigrant, Christopher Monks b. 1804. Would William be Richard's father perhaps? Richard was listed in the Dublin directory in the early 1800s. all of C. Monks descendents are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Pinckney, MI. Patrick Monks, Christopher's brother, ret'd to Ireland. Mary Ellen is a recurring name in the family.

FYI, 832 Trumpet Major Thomas Monks served in the 6th Dragoons and rode in the Charge of the HEAVY Brigade, which took place a couple of hours before the Charge of the Light Brigade.

ref: The Times, 1 Jan 1855, letter from Trumpeter Thomas Monks: “Camp Before Sebastopol, Dec. 4. My dear Father--I now take the opportunity of writing to you, hoping to find you all well, as this leaves me quite well, thank God for it. I suppose you have been anxious about me because I did not write to you before, but the reason was, because I could not get any paper to write on. I am very glad to think that the little present came in so good time for you. I hope mother is better than she was. I was very ill myself for about six weeks with the bowel complaint. I was in hospital till we came to this country, and after we landed I got better every day. I thought it was all over for me, it made me so very weak. I suppose you have heard about the battle we had on the 25th of October. If you could see The Times of November the 12th, you will see a very good account of our regiment, and the old Scotch Greys, who made a grand charge against double their number. The heavy brigade got great credit for that day; but I am sorry to say the light brigade got cut up. They lost about 600 out of 800. It made me feel very much when we went out to cover them, to see them fall. It brought us under a very heavy cross fire from the enemy, the balls and shells bursting beside us. A ball would burst under a horse, and blow it to pieces, and never hurt the man. You would see men running back with their arms off, and others bleeding from all parts of their bodies. Dear father, I never once thought that I should have seen such a sight as a battle. On the 5th of November we had another hard and bloody battle, but it did not come so near to us as we expected it would. It began near to Sebastopol. The Russians took our Foot Guards by surprise in their tents before they had got up. The poor fellows fought well, and only with their bayonets. There were about 4000 of the Russians killed. What with ours, the French, and the Russians, the whole valley was full of the dead. We kept our lot back that we had had the fight with. Talk about the 5th of November being kept up for bonfires and firing of arms, it was a 5th, and no mistake. I thought of it often afterwards that that day of the battle was on a Sunday. I thought about you being at chapel, and how you could all be clean, while wer were like navies, all dirty and hungry, besides being in the rain. I can tell you, dear father, when one thinks about home, it is enough to make one cry; but I will hope we will have sunny days for these yet. It is now December, and we are in camp yet. We had a great storm about a week ago. I was on trumpeter’s guard at the time the storm came across the plain, accompanied by hailstones and snow, and it blew all our tents down. The only way to keep still was to lie down. I had to do so for fear of being borne among the dirt. You may think in what sort of state our tents were, as after it was all over, we had to lay down that night on the wet ground without anything to eat, the cooks being unable to keep the fires in. We had our grog and a bit of biscuit at night. Ever since then it has been very wet and cold. Our poor horses are dying by sections every day, and Sebastopol is not taken yet, though we have had about seven weeks’ hard fighting at it. The Russians often make a sally out, but are driven back again. The Russian shipping is all that they can fire from, but we can’t get at it yet. I was on picket the other day; we have to stay out all night with our horses, and it was very wet and cold. I don’t think we can stand this much longer, but still we all keep up our spirits well. I can only hope we may get one more good charge at them and finish it. I must now conclude for the present, and I hope I have eased your mind about me. Accept of my kind love yourself, and no more from your affectionate son, Thomas Monks, trumpeter, 6th Enniskillen Dragoons. P.S. The guns are firing away now. We are about two miles off them, but we can see the flash and smoke. You may guess what sort of state we are in when I tell you I have not had a chance of washing my face these four weeks, let alone having a clean shirt. We are, I am sorry to say, in a state of filth, but we do the best we can.”
Colonel William Monks b. 1830 in Alabama - Wrote Book

In his book (A History of Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas) Colonel William Monks writes that his father was James Monks born about 1798 in South Carolina, the son of a man who came from Ireland during the Revolution, fought in the war and later married a woman of "English extraction." The book says that James father died when James was an infant leaving the widow with five children, James being the youngest and moved them all to Tennessee.

There is also an announcement in the a newspaper in Missouri where Col. Monks lived, concerning his 50th wedding anniversary which mentions that his grandmother lived to be 90 years old.

Colonel Monks never lists his grandfather or grandmother by name. Nor does his list any of his father's four siblings by name. Surely he knew their names but for whatever reason chose to leave out their names.

For those working on this line, it has been very frustrating sorting out who those siblings of James were, who his parents were.

So here is what we surmise about this line:

Eli Monks was one of James siblings: James and Eli show up in the 1820 census in Jackson, Tennesse. The birthdates and places fit - James born abt 1798 in SC and Eli born abt 1797 also in SC.

The other three siblings remain unknown. At least one of them was a female since Colonel Monks writes that his Father James moved from Alabama in 1835 after serving in the Semiole War in Florida. He had a flatboat build and set out down the Tennessee River with a brother in law by the name of "Phillips". It's also true that this Phillips could have easily been the husband of one of his wife's sisters, if she had any, but not her brother or his name would not have been Phillips but Graham since James' wife was Nancy Graham.

James moved from Tennessee to Huntsville in the late 1820s according to Col. Monks and he was born there along with my great great grandfather Francis Marion Monks and I believe Col Monks wrote that his father used a land warrant to acquire land there but I've not found a deed.

I did find a deed dated in 1831 for Eli. It makes sense that James, having settled in a new area would invite his brother to move to be near him. What is curious is that within ten days of the deed for Eli, another deed for an ajacent parcel of land was deeded to a Rebecca Monks. So who is Rebecca? Both men would have been in their early to mid thirties and they were the two youngest of the 5 siblings so Rebecca could only have been one of three options: The mother of Eli and James. An unmarried sister or a sister in law of one of the missing siblings. But if that were the case why would there not have been a deed in the husbands name. I think the best answer is that it was there mother, claiming land as the widow of a Revolutionary soldier and Eli and James claiming land on the same basis.

So who was the father of James that came from Ireland?
I've seen and heard rumors that he came with a brother and that the brothers split up, one going to the north and one to the south. This story, while a bit odd, is very possible. Here's why.

There is a ships passenger list of a William Monk, age 19, arriving in Maryland in 1774. And also a James Munks, age 24 (as I recall) arrived the same place the same year. Even more than they do today families tended to re-use first names often in honor of parents, siblings etc. This would explain why the names James and William are seen so often in this particular line. So the ages certainly fit the scenario. Colonel Monks could have been wrong about the exact arrival time...he said they came during the Revolution but 1774 was slight ahead of it. I don't see that as a major discrepancy and marrying in the late 1880 and having 5 children while in his thirties and forties seems also to be plausible.

I seems to me that the elder brother James did not migrate to South Carolina but instead perhaps to Pennsylvania.

So I ask any of you reseachers to help fill in the gaps in this line. I believe that it's likely that the many Monks' who still live in Jackson Tennessee are descended from at least one male sibling of Eli and James and may have some information in family bibles or other documents.

I'm also curious if any Monks' are connected to the James Monks who arrived in 1774 in Maryland and may have settled in Pennsyvania or elsewhere north.

Anyone with greater information on either of these lines would be greatly appreciated because they might lead us to Ireland and from there the rest of the lineage can be extended.

Thanks,
Ron Monks

I am relatively new at this. Just logged onto ancestry.com last night for the first time. Charles Monks like I said is from Stockport. My grandpartents died young, so this will be an extensive hunt for information. But, thanks for the info, I'll keep it in my notes. Michele

Greetings,

It is possible that we have a connection, I have a Charles Monks born at Bethnal Green (no date) his father was Willian Monks born Bethnal Green 1815 mother Mary Hall. At this stage I do not have reference to Rose Krobot, Charles and Bernice. Stockport area is home to Monks who ran a small shipping firm, again so far I have no connection, could this be the one?

Peter Monks

Hi Catherine,

I don't think we have the same Catherine Monks. I've found out the name of her nine children and they don't match with yours! - Annie, Kathleen, Peg, Bernard, Agnes, Attracta, Nicolas, John & Ella.

Sorry about that.

Greetings,

I am interested in MONKS, in my case around London. You may be aware that there was a book called MONKS NAVY concerning the fleet of coasters owned and operated by MONKS family of Liverpool, so far I have found no connection, I am sure that there has to be one.

Peter
