It does help other researchers to know if the lookup information is correct. Someone may come along a year from know researching the same family and verifying the lookup as your ancestry may help them as well.

Lots of luck in your research.

Joan

I am not sure, but both of my father's siblings were born in British Columbia and the border crossing fom there in 1934 shows that my natural father was born in Claima Spokane, Saskatchewan. I have tried to find such a place, but have decided that he was probably born in Spokane, WA as was I.

Yes, this is my family. I replied directly to Joyful. I am unfamiliar with the protocals for posting replies. I thought that I was not supposed to rep;y on the board to thank people for their help. I apologise for this error and will answer all posts in the future. Respectfully Doug Skinner.

Hi, Your post of 1 May does have replies where a kind soul did a look up for you. Is this information not your family? It would less confusing if you could reply to the post of 1 May first.

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.monroe/1724/mb.ashx

Thanks much.

His father was also named Johnson, killed by a tree, I believe before Johnson was born. His mother was named (I think) Rossanah? His father Johnson was the brother of Spense Monroe who married Eliza Jones, who was the father of the 5th president James Monroe.

Well I've been having problems running into dead ends by being too specific, so I was trying to take a more broad approach, hoping that someone would get kicked up in the dust. But my Grandfather is Herschel Allen Monroe, Jr from Fairfield, IL. My Grandmother is Violet Ellen Shelby from Golden Gate, IL. My GGf, Herschel Allen Monroe, Sr., and his wife Mollie Wolf(e) both live in Fairfield. I was just hoping to find some reference somewhere to their being Native Americans passing through that area in the right time period to have intermixed with my tree. I know they passed through Southern Illinois on the Trail of Tears but the movement was much lower in the state. We all carry Native American traits (the shovel teeth, occipital bun, wide spaced toes) and I'm going to do a DNA test, but until Ancestry gets to me on the list, I'm still stuck searching. My GF told stories of our Cherokee heritage, and I remember one story where he spoke of one of his elder relatives standing beneath a tree in back yard of their Fairfield farm house for days on end conversing with the spirits.

I've been searching for 5 years to no avail to trace my family to some rumored Cherokee's in Southern Illinois. If anyone has any idea, please please please let me know. My Grandfather told us all of our Cherokee heritage, but he has since passed and no one can remember how the line went. I just want to trace the line and be sure which clan we came from, so I can learn more about them. My family names consist of Wolf(e), Monroe, Shelby and Chapman.

Melvina Deweese and Richard Monroe

I am looking for any information regarding Richard and Melvina Monroe. My maternal grandmother was Margaret Melvina Monroe dob 15 Feb 1915 or 16. Her brother was Richard Melvin Monroe dob 23 Dec 1918. Robert Harrison Monroe was their father dob 1 or 2 May 1882 or 83 or 84. His father was Richard Monroe and his mother was Melvina Deweese???. I can not finf=d anything about them here. The Deweese name sounds familiar but I have know known living relatives that I know of to ask. I lost the Family Bible in 1983. Supposedly there was a published book on or Family which included my grandmother and her siblings but I have never seen it. My mother told m about it in the early sixties and that there was a copy with a minister in Spokane WA where I was born and lived at at the time. I approached him(name unknown) and he would not show me.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Respectfully submitted. Douglas Skinner

Recently, I found a photograph from 1930-1940 and on the back it said to Buddy Monroe, Love Rose Pollock. My maternal grandmother was Margaret Melvina Monroe dob 15 Feb 1915 and she had several brothers. George William dob 15 Jan 1912, Robert Rolland dob 12 Oct 1913 and Richard Melvin dob 23 Jan 1918. Does anyone have any information regarding Rose Pollock might be or which Monroe son was nicknamed Buddy? Respectfully submitted, Doug Skinner

I am descended from Elisha Monroe and Catherine "Kitty" Walton Monroe through their daughter, Martha Elizabeth Monroe, who married James Alexander Saunders. My computer crashed and I lost all info that you sent to me by email. I would like to be in communication with you again, if possible.

I think you have the same pictures I do. I also have a rather poor copy of a group photo that looks like something out of the Grapes of Wrath. My mother appears to be about 3 in the picture, so that would put it around 1920. I do not think I ever met John Wallace, but I certainly remember hearing Uncle Lester and Uncle Carl talk about him.

Do either of you know whether any of the direct MALE descendants of your Monroe ancestor (Monroe father to Monroe son to Monroe son to Monroe son) has done any DNA testing? I had also heard from my grandmother that she was related to President Monroe. DNA testing and history appear to say otherwise. Instead, we've determined that our Monroe ancestors are descendants of the Monroe's who were banished to the Americas by Cromwell in the 1650s. Our particular line has a mutation that would appear to be a unique line and I'm hoping to find other Monroes with that same mutation. Our group is most likely originally from CT then moved to PA to NY (and back and forth over the state line) before moving to Bureau County, IL.

Hi Matt,
My grandmother's grandparents were James Monroe and Adaline Head. I know where they are buried on Ottawa Avenue. My mother would often stop at this grave. I do not know the name of my grandmother's mother (who would be a child of these two). I do know that her last name was Monroe. I was told that these people were related to President Monroe. Also, Marilyn Monroe's mother's maiden name just happened to be Monroe. A studio made her famous name up, however, she was actually related to Monroes. My mother told me that she read somewhere that Marilyn was a grand niece of President Monroe. So, we often wondered if we were related to her. Please contact me if you wish at jane.nuccio@live.com. I am also under Jane Nuccio on facebook and live in Ottawa.

Need info on GEORGE WASHINGTON MONROE b. 1821 in VA

I have hit a brick wall on this one! My ggg grandfather was George Washington Monroe b: 1821 in VA, d: 1899 in IN. He was married to Sarah Ann Smith (b:1824 OH d: 1909 IN)-they were married in Fayette Co, Ohio in 1844. (Sarah's parents were George Smith & Elizabeth "Betty" Batten.) I know from census records that George was already in Ohio by the 1850s, and by the 1870s the family moved to Indiana (Haddon Twnship, Sullivan Co.). George & Sarah had 10 children, but I only know of 8 of them. They are: John J. b:1845, James M. b:1847, George S. b:1849/50, Hugh b:1853, Joseph C. b:1856, Ann M. b:1859, Benjamin F. b:1862, and Richard S. "Dick" b:1866. All of the children were born in Hamilton, Butler Co, Ohio. What I am trying to find out is WHO ARE GEORGE WASHINGTON MONROE'S PARENTS?? I know from census records that they were both born in VIRGINIA, the same as George, but I can't find any records connecting him to anyone. PLEASE HELP, IF YOU HAVE ANY INFO, THAT IS EVEN A POSSIBILITY, I WOULD APPRECIATE IT! You can reach me directly through my email at KJ.LEGGE@GMAIL.COM Thanks!

My g-g-grandfather Samuel Monroe was supposedly 1st cousin of President James Monroe. Census data has Samuel born in PA in 1807. We have not been able to determine where in PA he was born nor his parent's names. Thus a road block.

Samuel married Amelia Wall in 1829 in Noblesville, Indiana. He died in 1850 in Lawrenceville, Indiana.
I am participating in the Clan Munro DNA project and have a match with a Donald Page Monroe. His g-g-grandfather was Aranthes Monroe born in 1804 in N.Y. Aranthes' parents names are also unknown.

Hopefully some one in the genealogy world has some info to share regarding Samuel. It could be that he entered the U.S. thru PA and was actually born in Scotland.

Any thread you may have will be appreciated.

James Monroe

I remember my grandfather mentioning Lyman Brannock's name as Hester was his grandfather Benjamin's sister.
I am not related to Julia. I am researching her because she was the midwife who visited my great great aunt. According to Julia she "did not touch her or give her any medicine" but the woman died from septicemia and the autopsy identified a perforation in the uterus. I have lots of newspaper articles about Julia and her father and her brothers. They were quite the family. Julia was married at least 3 times. Her father was a bigamist. Her brother killed someone in a bar fight. Julia also has a patent for a liniment with lots of interesting ingredients.
I'd like to hear your "interesting" bits. If you send me your email address I can send you what I have.

Her full name, at least with the husbands I can identify is
Julia Ann Brannock Wermuth Monroe Achard
husbands were Jacob Wermuth, Percival Monroe and Milton/Meliton Achard
Yes, the very same. I have lots of information on her, but I'm trying to find out what happened to her. I've lost track of her about 1910. I'd like to find when she died, where she's buried, and what became of her children.
How are you related?
