Hi- It's been some time since I looked at this family. From what I can remember without looking it up, I think he was someone's uncle, but I can't quite remember. My memory tells me that somehow the Camunez family and Ross family were connected. This is my cousin's wife's family, I had alot of fun researching it along with the history of New Mexico. How are you related again? My cousin's wife is a descendant of Antonio Montero. You can e-mail me at Casey@budget.net and meanwhile I will see what I can find on George Ross. This family was extremely confusing. Nice to hear someone else is researching this family as well, maybe we will get it all sorted out some day.

Celia

Hoping that you are still reading this board. I am also researching this family due to a connection to my own research.
I have an old mystery I am trying to unravel. My husband's grandfather George Ross lived with Antonio & Aurora Montero
after he left New Mexico when his wife Josefa died.
In this census it shows that George was the Uncle. I assume
that he is connected through Camunez since George's mother was Teresa Camunez married to George Ross Sr. tracing his Camunez roots gets difficult since Teresa Died when George was only 12. He was apparently raised by his father and his secong wife. In 1889 George became a widow after his wife Josefa died in child birth. He left his 4 children with the maternal grandparents and went on the road. Maybe to find himself. I believe this census showing him with Antonio & Aurora was right at that time. Family Lore says he was always taking off for New Mexico to go to Texas. The next time I find him documented is in 1900 where he is marrying Eustacia Dominguez in Las Cruces. It is not until after 1902 that he returns to the Mimbres to retrieve his children with Josefa. When he left he had four children,
Helen, Clara, Pedro & George. When he returned he only had the 2 girls. The boys died. George 3 months after his mother who died in child birth 1899, Pedro who died of diptheria in 1902. He took the girls and went back to Las Cruces where he had established a ranch. However he continued his trips to Texas. I finally found documentation about a relationship he had with Maria Camunez the daughter of Reynaldo Camunez and Otilia Marquardt. I can only date that relationship by the birth of a daughter they had in 1913. Yolanda Ross. Yolanda resided with Maria and her husband Augustino Robles. By the time this child was born
any persons who would of known that they were related had passed on. George Sr. Teresa, Reynaldo, Otillia, and others.
The Camunez clan in Las Cruces only remembered that something happened in the family that caused a dvision in that some Ross's took the Camunez name and some remained Ross. My curiosity is piqued. How did they find out that Maria's father Reynaldo was George's mother Teresa's brother? If neither knew it must have been a rude awakening. If George knew and pursued Maria that would certainly cause a bitter split.

Anyway I am trying to learn how Camunez was related to Antonio Montero. That info will further my research and perhaps answer some questions. email me with any info you may have.
Thanks in advance.
1900 United States Federal Census about Aurora Montero Name:	Aurora Montero
Home in 1900:	San Lorenzo, Grant, New Mexico
Age:	22
Birth Date:	Dec 1877
Birthplace:	New Mexico
Race:	White
Gender:	Female
Relationship to Head of House:	Wife
Father's Birthplace:	Mexico
Mother's Birthplace:	New Mexico
Mother: number of living children:	0
Mother: How many children:	1
Spouse's name:	Antonio Montero
Marriage Year:	1898
Marital Status:	Married
Years Married:	2
Occupation:	View on Image
Neighbors:	View others on page
Household Members: Name	Age
Antonio Montero	20
Aurora Montero	22
Inacio Oronna	49
George Ross	34

Hello,
I am not sure. Perhaps we are related. I know my grandfathers family was very poor. He often spoke of going to bed hungry for days as a boy, and he left Spain as a young boy joining the merchant marine and finally coming to America. Several years later, he went back to Spain and married my grandmother.

I am looking for any relatives or friends of my Grandfather Jesus Montero who came to the U.S around 1915 and was married to my Grandmother Carmen Rodeiro(sp). They both came to the U.S. from Spain. My Grandfather worked for the City of New York. They spoke of family in Spain, but I do not remember specifics. They are both deceased, my Grandfather passed in 1986 and my Grandmother passed away a few years ago.

Dr. Antonio Montero's son, Federico Antonio Montero (my grandfather), had half brothers by the name of Jesus, Luis (who he met and spent sometime with picking fruit), Enrique, and Federico. My mother never knew her grandfather's other wife, etc. My mother only talked about her uncle Federico who eventually ended up in LA and is buried there. Mom had a picture of her uncle and gave this photo to his "other family", Dorothy being his daughter. I've kept in touch with Dorothy and her Daughter Caroline (my cousins)though I haven't talked to them this past year.
I am so happy to know other family members are researching Dr. Antonio Montero since he is my g-g grandfather too! And I'v been trying to get information of his background/life as well. My deceased mother's (Fidela Montero Dominguez) father was his son, who was born in Las Cruces, NM about 1880. He and his mother eventually left Las Cruces and the doctor, since my g-grandmother found out that the "Doctor" had another family PRIOR to marrying her in Sonora, Mexico!! I have a photograph of the "doctor" with my g-grandmother which was taken in the late 1800's. I would like to talk with you, if at all possible. We're related!!

I am so very much interested in emailing/talking with you. I, too, am a descendent of Antonio Montero of Portugal. He was my mother's (Fidela Montero Dominguez) g-g grandfather. His son Antonio, born in Taos, was my mother's paternal grandfather AND evidently had a "second" family when my great-grandmother (Ana Joaquina Valenzuela y Fernandez) married him in Sonora, Mexico! Within this family, the names of Antonio, Luis, Enrique (Henry) Federico (Fred) were given to so many of the "children", as my mother's brothers all have these names! It does get confusing. So, we are all related!!

Thanks for the great info! I am having trouble keeping the Fred's straight. Can I assume that Camunez was the maiden name of their mother, Refugia Montero? I'm not sure yet where Estella was born. Age 2 she was in Las Cruces with her family. Apparently no brothers, sisters, Bertha, Margarita, and Erminia. Sharon's cousin, Brian Flynn tells me Antonio died in Las Cruces in 1916 and sometime after that Aurora moves to Los Angeles. By 1930 they are in Montebello, Ca. and Aurora is the head of household. Sharon tells me Antonio was blind later on and died of a brain tumor. Sharon mentions that her grandmother Estella had relatives by the name of Fontaine in Las Cruces. I looked him up and his name was Albert Jennings Fountain (he americanized his name after he moved west from New York) There are quite a few articles on him. He was a lawyer, Indian fighter and politician. He was friends with Pat Garrett. So far I haven't found a family connection. I did see one of the Montero brothers in a Jerome census, but not sure how long they lived there. What an interesting family!

the antonio you mention is jesse's younger brother. both are sons of dr. antonio montero. was estella born in jerome az? i don't know of dr antonio montero's burial site but i do have his medical license from the late 1800's. i have been unable to find how or where he went to medical school yet. i was told boston but no record yet. the fred montero who died in los angeles in 1945 was also a younger brother of jesse montero. he had a son named fred montero but did not stay to raise his son. that fred montero died a few years ago in the santa barbara, and would have been my grandfather fred a montero's first cousin. they did not each other. estella would also be my grandfather's first cousin and might have known each other as kids as i think jesse, tony and fred montero (all sons of dr. antonio) left silver city and went to jerome az. as young men. they settled there for about 15 years before all going their own ways. jesse went to san diego. where did antonio and aurora go? brawley? did estella have any brothers?

Nice to meet you! I am researching for my cousin's wife, Sharon Stein. She is the ggrandaughter of Antonio Montero and Aurora Gonzales. Their daughter, Estella Montero, her grandmother. Antonio also had a brother named Fred, who I think died in Los Angeles in 1945, if I have the right one. Death index says his mother's maiden name Camunez. Do you happen to know where Antonio the Dr. is buried in Las Cruces?

I have also been researching Antonio Montero. From research on the internet, it appears that Antonio from Portugal was a well known mountain man and was employed by the American Fur Company. He was at the Horse Creek Rendezvous in 1833. In 1834 Antonio constructed a post known as the Portugese Houses on the Powder River. He was all over the west and finally settled down in New Mexico and married Maria Francisca Vigil. Does this sound like the same person you are researching?

Thank you very much for your reply. My gr-gr uncle was named Godwin Monterey Pittman. In an article about him he stated that his grandfather's name was Antonio Monterey, one of the cattle kings of Arizona. I could not find anything about the surname Monterey, but thought maybe it might be a variant of Montero. Godwin Monterey Pittman was an attorney and judge in San Bernardino, CA. I did have someone do a search for Antonio Monterey in Arizona but he did not find anything. Were one of the Antonio Monteros in the cattle business?
