Hi,

I am related to the Scoutens in the Remsen/Forestport area. I know that this entire line branched out into various Oneida county towns and even down to Cortland County. I am descended from Jesegas Schouten on down the line to Benjamin Isaac who was my great grandpa. My grandmother was Ruth Elliot Scouten Baker.

One of the things I am looking for is Benjamin's father's obituary from 1868/69. Their family lived in Remsen. When Gilbert died, his wife,Mary, and the children,Edwin and Benjamin moved to Forestport where her father-in-law Isaac resided with his wife Catherine. Mary was pregnant when Gilbert died, and gave birth to a daughter, named Mary,in 1868.On an 1870 census, little Mary is 2.

I don't know if you have any information concerning Viola Tompkins Gilbert, who was Benjamin's wife, but she was native american. I am trying to locate her tribal affiliation. She was born in Lisle,Broome,NYS in 1864/65. I found added information on her in an 1892 NYS census in Marathon,NY with two children,Lena,4,and Franklin,7. She was listed as widowed. I cannot find where those children went after she and Benjamin married in March of that same year. I am not sure of the actual father's first name either. It is possible that they either went to an orphanage or to one of the Gilbert families in Cortland County.

If you have any info to share,it would be immensely appreciated. Thanks.

Cindi Taylor
cindi@cynthiaselegantcakes.com

http://oldfultonny.da.ru/

This site has old newspapers and you can search by scouten. I found the following information there. Homer was the son of Byron who died, Byron was the ony son of Abram and Frances. His wife Ella Ford died in Oct 1904 then Byron died leaving 4 sons Glenn, Curtis, Homer and Grant. Byron had one sister Ollie. It seems that your Abram was probably a cousin of Harvey who was my Husbands Great Great Grandfather. I have not been able to ge past Harvey yet.

The article I found at the web site provided said that the children of Byron went to the Utica orphan home. The Utica Rome area is wereh my husbands family came from all so.

No my husband did not have his DNA checked. We are able to track his scouten side through family that he grew up with, family records and the graves in Utica and Remsen NY. There is a web site called Old fulton Postcards that has searchable copies of NY newspapaers back to the 1800's and I was able to locate certain obituaries and the news article i mentioned about Byron. Perhaps you could search in there I did see more than one Byron but didnt look them up as they were not in my search. I did check out the obituary one when orphanage caught my eye as I had received an email a while ago about it and I remembered.

Good morning,
I do not know if Bryon Scouten is connected to my Scouten's.
He may be a brother to James Edward Scout*n born about 1857, NY. I have 2 James Scout*n's b. abt 1857, one in Oswego, Co and the other in Penn. but unless my James had more than 1 family, I can not find a connection or lead.
In your research have you come across a James Edward or a
nickname that might fit?
I am also wondering if your husband, or a direct decendent, has had his DNA tested?
Peggy
I have a Byron Scouten son of Abram and Frances who was born 12/24/1869 and died 8/26/1910 both in forestport NY. His wife Ella Ford had already died in 1903, and his children had been placed in an orphanage at that time. His obiturary states he had 4 sons Glenn, Homer, Curtis and Grant. It seems logical that if the children had gone to an orphans home in 1903 they might have gone back in 1910. I also note that in my husband family (he is the Scouten) they routinely go by a middle name rather than the first name. i.d my FIL was Roger Clifford but everyone called him Cliff, his father Harvey Perry was always called Perry. Could any of these sons be your relative perhaps using a middle name.

I don't know about Montrose's but my husband is the son of Clifford Roger Scouten, son of Harvey Perry Scouten, who was the son of Harvey Scouten born 1830 who was the son of Wilbur Scouten in Boonville NY, his children were Wilber. E. B. Howard, Aida and Alida. So your Wilber may be related to another of Wilburs sons or EB.

Hello Barbara,

There is actually one surviving member which is Judith. Wilfred was married twice and had two children, Geoff and Judith from his second marriage. Geoff unfortunately passed away in 2003 but was in time to see me marry which was good. Judith is still with us today.

Dad had a very close relationship with geoff and Judith but unfortunately not with Roy which is a shame. They fell out when they were quite young and as you probably know Roy died quite young so they didn;t really have chance to make up.

Dad was quite a private man and I am not sure who he kept in contact with but I am bursting to know.

Enjoy the rest of your break!

Cherryl

The last surviving of the Montrose aunts mentioned him, and Roy from time to time but I do not know if they were in direct contact. Unfortunately she is now very near the end of her days and sinking fast.

Prospects of our return home on Monday are diminishing as the ash continues to clog the skies.. However, South Wales is somewhere I always wanted to come back and visit as my father used to take us there for holidays.

Unfortunately, my father (Derek), passed away only two months ago, which is a shame as he probably would have loved to have met you.

As we were going through his things, we found lots of fabulous photos of Wilfred Montrose, Wilfreds brother Frank Edgar Montrose and of their father Frank Montrose and that's when I started my research, to find out who all these people were.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kindest regards,

Cherryl

I wonder where you live?
I will certainly be in touch when we get back home and I have all my records to hand - perhaps we could then talk on the telephone?

Very best wishes
Barbara

PS (I have changed my user name because I am away from home and forgot the original!)
Hello Barbara, my name is Cherryl Montrose-Matheson.

I have just clocked on to this message you posted some time ago as I have been researching the Montrose family.

My Father was Derek Montrose, son of Wilfred Montrose who was the youngest son of Frank Montrose and Mary Beatrice Brierley and therfore I believe, I am also a direct descendent of Frank Montrose.

I have had great difficulty in getting information on Frank Montrose and when I read your message below, it all makes sense.

I am quite keen to learn more and wandered if you wanted to share any information as you suggested below?

Kindest Regards,

Cherryl

My grandfather recently got back his Y DNA results and David Noel Montrose is listed as a match w/i 6 generations, through George Lanphear. That does make sense, since the Coveys (my great-grandmother's family) had Lanphear relatives. Still, it would be nice to know at which Lanphear we connect.

Hi,

I don't know if you're the correct David Montrose, but my aunt, Phyllis Fultz recently requested that DNA testing be done on a male relative (White Family). It apparently came back connected to a David Noel Montrose. I'm a little confused as to what this connection means. Do you know anything about it?

Elizabeth Vogt

This is a correction to my previous message:
The DNA connection between David Noel Montrose and Mark Allen Scouten is within 7 generations or 175 years. This would make the person either my great or great, great male relative.
My Grandfather, Harvey Raymond Scouten was in a New York orphanage. (name and place unknown) He reports on documents that he was born in Fulton, Oswego, NY (I don't know if he guessed or knew)For Social Security purposes he was legally given the birthday of 9/12/1883.
I would appreciate any leads but facts would be great.

Seeking Montrosses from West Virginia or related to those in West Virgina. Know some of father-in-laws brothers went to SC and two of his sons went to Michigan. Father-in-law was Tony Montrose her married Juanita. One of his brothers married Juanita's sisters named Geneva. One of the older boys is Roscoe and I believe there was a Carl also. The younger boys were (Tony) Eugene, Jerry, and Anthony Jerome. Eugene and Jerry are both deceased along with Tony and Juanita. Thought this would give my niece something to keep her occupied with as she is now disabled and will make a nice surprise for my husband, and the rest of the family as we are not telling them until we are done or are at a wall and need their help. Tony worked in the Coal Mines near Mullens, WV.

This is for Francis Hunter; I have all but given up on doing the family tree. My grandfather was born on July 1, 1881 and was married to Catherine (Murphy) Rivard. I do not know when his sister was born but she was married to a Montrose. If my info was correct, Frank was born in British Colombia, Canada. I don't know if his sister was or not. I can't seem to get past this. I know there was an Ann Montrose, Mary Montrose, John Montrose. I really don't have much to go on. Frank had 6 living children. The oldest was Catherine (Dolly) Mildred, Liz,Margaret, Doris, and John. If any of it rings a bell, please write.

Elijah Montrose md. Sarah Henderson 7 Jan 1767

This information comes from the "History of Greenfield Shire Town of Franklin County, Massachusetts ". They were of Halifax, Windham, Vermont. I've seen his surname as: Montrose, Monrose, Monros and Monross. He may have been listed as of 1818 in CT on the roll of Rev. War pensioners, fife major, Connecticut Line . There is a listing on the 1820 and 1830 census in Bristol, Hartford, CT. However, there is an Elijah Manross is the Bristol Street Cemetery d. 1832 that might be the one on these census but he is not the one that married Sarah. I have a good idea regarding Sarah's line and am seeking any additional information to prove my assumptions. I know very little regarding Elijah. Any help would be appreciated.

Donovan
just realized my family had this book. It was authored by John Wilson Taylor, Ph.D. and Eva Mills (Lee) Taylor and published by The McClure Printing Company of Staunton, VA in 1958. It contains 9,911 surnames taking this family back to Pierre Montas who immigrated from France to the "New France" area of Canada (around Quebec) in middle to late 1600's. I will have the index copied within a week or two and would be willing to do lookups.
