This is the url address for Ona Milda's book: Montvilai

http://www.milda-stonkuviene.lt/index_files/Montvilai.pdf

I was told the translation is the Montvilai Tribe, the last 1,000 years.

Our family tree goes back to the 1600s and before that it is called "legend" because there was little left in print.

Ona Milda spent 10 years researching in the archives in Vilnius, the capitol of Lithuania. I believe she privately published this book and had 2,000 copies made. From pictures I have seen it looks like it may be leather bound. It is over 200 pages and has three family crests. Father Jouzas Montvila, my great uncle is in the book and so is my grandfather, Peter Montvila of Brooklyn, NY.

It is the 100 year anniversary of Father Jouzas's death on the Titanic. Some relatives are looking into where he is in the beatification process towards sainthood.

Sigita speaks English and Lithuanian.

Sudievu,

Marianne (Marijona)

Re: Montville History

I, too, am having quite a difficult time finding and sorting through the information on this line of my family. As mentioned, one problem is the many variations of the name. My family seems to have gone from Montville to Monteville to Montiville (the current spelling in my family).

And I, too, am having to be very careful with the Lithuania/France aspect. My family is of French descent. . I am still unclear as to whether there is a connection between the two or not. My grandfather remembered his father speaking both English and French. Thus far, I have not been able to go back far enough to positively trace my family to either France or Lituania, only to Canada.

My grandfather was Carl Wesley Montiville Sr. born in Louisiana in 1910.
His father was Joseph Oliver Monteville born abt 1875 to 1878.
His grandfather was also named Joseph and he was born abt 1844.
It was believed by my grandfather that the elder Joseph was born in France and immigrated to Canada at some point (possibly as a young child) where he eventually married and then immigrated to the United States, he thought to Michigan. From census records and information passed down by my grandfather, I thought the younger Joseph had been born in Michigan so I concentrated a lot of my research there, but was running into dead ends. Then I discovered an 1880 US Census record that appears to have the family living in Connecticut.

Here is what the US Census forms show:

1930 US Census (Vernon Parish, Leesville, LA)indicates:
Younger Joseph born in Michigan abt 1876
Both parents born in France

1920 US Census (Allen Parish, Oakdale, LA) indicates:
Younger Joseph born in Michigan abt 1877
Father born in France Mother born in Canada

1910 US Census (Calcaseiu, LA) indicates:
Younger Joseph born in Michigan abt 1875
Both parents born in Canada

1900 US Census (Rapides parish, Spring Hill, LA) indicates:
Younger Joseph and both parents were born in Canada & immigrated to the US in 1887 (but based on other most of the other records I've found this date probably isn't correct).

1880 US Census (Putnam CT) shows the following:
Younger Joseph (age 2) and older brother Frederick both born in Connecticut and living with father Joseph, Mother Shiverea, and grandmother Julian (all 3 born in Canada). Julian was head of household at this time so she may have been widowed-I can find no information on her husband at all-he probably immigrated to Canada from France but may or may not have ever came to the US).

Since Joseph was only abt 2 when he lived in Connecticut, it is quite possible that the family moved to Michigan while he was young and he had no memory of living in Connecticut, and just assumed he was born in Michigan. Then again, I have found no record at all of the family ever being in Michigan so the information may be completely erroneous for unknown reasons.
If this is my Joseph (which it seems to be) it is the first and only information I've found on his Mother, Grandmother, and brother Frederick (or any siblings for that matter).

The elder and younger Joseph both made their way to Louisiana some time prior to 1898 when young Joseph married Eliza Ann Richmond of Louisiana. The elder Joseph had also remarried about this time to Mary Clark of Louisiana who was much younger than him and they had children together- Mabel, Amanda, Willie, and Silistene Monteville. On one US Census, Mabel is shown as the younger Joseph's child but this is incorrect. The younger Joseph had only sons. There are no records that I can find of Shiverea or Frederick ever coming to Louisiana. In fact, the 1880 US Census is the only record I can find that mentions Shiverea, Frederick, or Julian.

One note, the confusion in the records as to whether the elder Joseph (b. 1844) was born in Canada or France may have been resolved when I found information that he was born in Canada, Yvelines, Ile-de-France, France. I have yet to verify this information but I had not considered that there was a "Canada" in France. And I'm sure most Census takers at the time did not realize that either, erroneously recording place of birth as Candada.

If any of this sounds familiar to anyone, I have lots of info on this family after they came to Louisiana that I will be glad to share. Meanwhile, any information on the two Joseph's, Frederick, Shiverea, or Julian Montville/Monteville would be a great help. Any tips or info would be appreciated.

Please don`t make mistake- Montvila is original old lithuanian surname.Montewille, Mondewille-french canadien.
When lithuanians emigrate to USA some of their names were speld wrongly using french names as example. That cost misunderstanding about origin of this name. Lithuanians name were Montvila, Montwila, Montwillo, Montvil, Mantvila and Montvilas.

If you come across the baptismal records, chances are that your grandfather was baptised as Joseph Emile Montville. The same went for his father as Joseph Maurice. The baptismal records would have the boys baptised as Joseph and the Girls as Marie. But the family would normally go by their middle names.
The civil record may have it as Emile Joseph and Maurice Joseph.

David

Amazing. Thanks so much! My grandfather's (Emile's) middle name was Joseph. I found a Joseph Morris Montville but it is possible that he was actually a Morris Joseph Montville. Because of the Joseph first name I was tracking down the line of Prest Montville and his wife Marie Croix who came from Quebec as well. It makes a little more sense since passing the middle name is a sort of tradition in my family.

Hi,

I quickly looked at the 1930 Census in Uxbridge and it seems that his Emile's parents are Morris (Maurice) Montville and Aldea. I see in some records that he is Maurice Jr. I found Maurice Sr married to Lucia Gaulin. Maurice is married to Lucia under the name of Mandeville on 29 Aug 1898 in Whitinsville, MA. His parents are Paul Mandeville and Philomene Joly. I found their marriage in St. Pierre, Sorel Quebec.

David

The name Montville is definitely French. I am a Montville from Uxbridge MA. I can't really seem to find anything that goes back past when my family came over to the US. Name change perhaps (there is a Montville France, it is about 14km north of Rouen). It wasn't uncommon for immigrants coming to the US to accidentally have their name changed at the border to the city they were from. My memere and pepere (what I called my grandparents) spoke French even though they were both born in MA.

Since we all seem to be in New England I can also possibly assume we are Quebecois who came down to work the mills during the famines/early industrial revolution.

My grandfather is Emile Joseph Montville (b. June 1924, Army Serial # 31264283) if that helps shed light on anyone's queries.

I'm also researching Montville of Central MA.
My grandfather's mother was Rose Montville sister of Peter and Elizabeth. Their parent's were Agnes and Joseph Montville and all of the census records seem to say that Agnes and Joseph immigrated from Lithuania to Cheshire County NH and had their three children. They then moved to Fitchburg, MA (my hometown). My grandfather is Francis Gonynor (still living and almost 83)he knows very little of his family because his mother died when he was 6 (his Mother was Rose) and his father surrendered him to a boy's home in Walpole. I wonder if the Peter you mentioned was Rose's sister Peter?

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm not related but this should help you.

Gilbert Montville (age 26) married Mary Lovely (age 18) on 24 Jul 1870 in Auburn, MA
His parents are Michel and Mary.
Her parents are Felix and Sophia
He was born in Canada, She was born in Southbridge, MA

Here are a few things that you will need to investigate.
Montville may not be the original name, it may be Mandeville, but I'm not 100% sure. Maybe your family could shed some light on that.
As Mary Lovely, usually Lovely would be Lamoureux, but on her burial record it is Lusignan. That is something else you will need to verify.

Hope that helps you.

David
Please contact me about your MONTVILLEs. This is one of the variations of spelling of my great-grandfather's last name MONVILLE / deMONTREVILLE. These MONVILLEs were in NY for a time; they eventually settled in MO and were originally from French Canada.
Re: montville

My great-grandfather was Edward MONVILLE (also spelled: MONTVILLE,MONTEVILLE, MONTREVILLE, d'MONTREVILLE, deMONTREVILLE, etc.) His father (my gggrandfather) was Frederick MONVILLE (etc.). As I understand it, he was married at least twice (probably 3 times?). Gggpa Fred MONVILLE was born in 1817 in French Canada and died in 1919 (yes he was almost 103!).
My gggma was Adelia TACHEY (spelling of TASCHEY unsure but sounded like "ta-SHAY"). Adelia, b. 1827, was the daughter of Joseph and Sophie (?) TACHEY, both born in Montreal. Joseph died in Kittyville, NY (Keeseville???) and Sophie was buried in Burlington, VA. The TACHEY's were also French Canadian.
Adelia and Fred had two children I know of: Lavinia and Edward (my ggpa, b. 1849). Adelia died when Ed was about 4 or 5 years old. His dad Fred then remarried a school-teacher in/from NY, with the last name of ? STACEY, who taught Ed and Lavinia (nickname DAULPHINE) English.
Fred and later Ed worked for the RRs. The family moved west and eventually settled in Hannibal, Marion Co., MO. Ed married Bertha MUELLER/MILLER. We don't know what happened to Lavinia. Do you think there is any chance your Fred MONTVILLE could be my gggpa MONVILLE?
Also, ggpa Ed and Bertha had four children: Frederick, Franklin, Lillian, and Emma. This son Frederick went to CA as a young man. I don't know much about him but think he died young, perhaps in one of the wars?
One other Frederick MONVILLE in our family is gggpa Frederick MONVILLE's dad. He was French Canadian, also. I calculate he was born about 1787. This MONVILLE line lives a long time, usually into their 90s or sometimes early 100s.
Please contact me to tell me if any of this sounds familiar. I would love to find out more about this side of my family. My email address is: jtwiswall@earthlink.net .
Diane Wiswall in St. Louis, MO

MONVILLE in NY

I am seeking info on two families: MONVILLE and TACHET. The name MONVILLE has also been spelled deMONTREVILLE and various other ways MONTEVILLE, MONTVILLE, etc.). The TACHET is an attempt to spell a French-Canadian name that was *pronounced* "tah-SHAY."

Adelia TACHET was born abt. 1827 in "Kittyville," NY, according to family lore. I haven't been able to locate "Kittyville," but someone has suggested that perhaps it was actually "Keeseville," NY. What county is Keeseville in? Does anyone have a website to access records there such as births, marriages, deaths? [The pronounciation "Kittyville" is from the memory of Adelia's young son Edward, who spoke French-Canadian rather than English as his primary language.]
Adelia TACHET married Frederick MONVILLE/deMONTREVILLE, had two children: Edward (b. 1849) and Lavinia, and then by 1858 she had passed away. Frederick (nickname "Frenchie") then married a woman from NY who was a schoolteacher [unsure of maiden name, may have been STACEY]. The family then moved west about the time of the goldrush, stopping for awhile in IL and then moving onto Hannibal, Marion Co., MO, where they decided to stay. Fred and later son Ed both worked for the railroads, Fred as an engineer and Ed as coalman. Both men lived to be in their late 90s and beyond. Ed's daughter lived to 99 1/2 as well and was my grandmother.

This family has been especially difficult to trace. ANY help will be appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Diane Wiswall at jtwiswall@earthlink.net

I'm tracking my Vinesky ancestors & we may be able to collaborate as they include Montvilles. My grandfather John Vinesky & his wife were living with George Montville when my father Dan Vinesky was born in 1923. Mary Montville was John's Aunt. Apparently so was an Anna McClain - whom he was living with in 1920. I do not know what happened to her, although it's possible she died between 1920 & 1930, as her son William McClain was also living with George & Mary in 1930.

Email me, & maybe we can meet & talk further.

We also came to Cleveland, via PA (Wilkes-Barre). The family is originally from Lithuania (possibly Poland, now..) - from whaqt was known in 1900 as the Suwalki Gubernia of Russian Poland. My great-grandmother was Agniezka (Agnes, in English) Luksys. Her sister, Mary, married George Montville. Apparently they had another sister, whose married name was Anna McClain - my grandfather was living with her in 1920, and with George Montville's family in 1930.
Email me at hubalbd@netzero.com with any info - or if you want to talk further...

Check the Titanic passenger list online - you'll find him listed in 2nd class. His cousin married my great-grandmother's sister - Mary Luksuite.

My name is Charlene (Danevicz) Truszkowski
I live in Grand Rapids Michigan.
I am the great-grandaughter of Anton and Eva Montvila.
They had two children, (maybe more) that I know of.
Peter and Magdalena (my Grandmother).

My Grandmother married Adam Danevicz on June 20, 1919.
They had 3 sons, Edward (my father), John and Thomas.

Peter had three children - two of whom lived in Chicago. Their names were Eva Montville/Montvila and George Montville/Montvila. His other son, Peter, possibly lived in California.

It seems interesting that in the story of Rev. Juozas Montvila (b. January 3, 1885), who died on the Titanic, his mother's name was Magdalena and his brother's name was Petra. Which, as you see above, are the names of my grandmother(b. Feb. 4, 1900) and her brother. This leads me to speculate that there is surely a family connection.

I am trying to discover the relatives of my great-grandparents Anton and Eva. Anton died on Sep. 27, 1929.

I have the deed to the house Anton built at 1254 Muskegon Street NW, Grand Rapids MI.

If anyone can help I would be so grateful.
Thank You, Charlene Danevicz/Truszkowski
That surname is French. Perhaps your earliest antecedents were French Huguenots. You said somewhere that you're in cental Massachusetts? I think it's very likely that they were Huguenots. Just for fun I typed in Jean-Baptiste Montville at the search site of rootsweb.com and got pages of Montville info . There are several entries also for "Charles Montville" and a lot of others. World Ancestry Tree seems to have an abundance of Montvilles. I hope some of them are your's.
Diane, similar experience. "Catesville", NY was given as the birthplace of John LeFore DAVID b. 1874. I finally figured out that it was Cadyville, Clinton Co., NY. He MAY have been the son of Basile DAVID and Lucie MONTVILLE/MANDEVILLE, etc. Cadyville and Keeseville are both in Clinton Co. These families were French-Canadian. John had known siblings Emily, Basil, and Carrie, and probably others. MANDEVILLE given names: Scholastique, Baptiste, and Catherine. Surname ST. MICHEL possible connection. Anything familiar?

ED, I have montvila on my paternal grandmothers side. Her mother, Jieva M, one of ten children born of mykolas M and two wives was born 1864; the youngest 1883. Most of them but not all came to this country, mostly settled in Cleveland, Ohio, though some went to " the coal fields of PA" or to Chicago. From the info you gave they appear unrelated, but----- Mine were born around Marijampole, Lith; I've heard the names of towns such as Sasnava and Kantalis'kis.
I vaguely remember seeing a reference to a George M but at the moment I can't come up with it. also a Petras M who wrote about his brother Jouzas who died on the titanic. These last three appear unrelated to mine.
