Patrick Mooney in Waterford County ,Ireland

I am looking to find info on my gg grandparents Patrick Mooney and Bridget McGuire. I believe Patrick was born In County Waterford or Tipperary, Ireland around 1810. I do not know the names of his parents. He married Bridget Maguire (daughter of John Maguire) in 1837 in Tipperary. Their children were all baptized in Clonmel, Tipperary: John b. 1838, James b.1840, William b. 1842, Patrick b.1845, Pierce b, 1847, Patrick b. 1848, Pierce b. 1850, Mary b. 1852 ,Brendan/Bryan b. 1855, Bridget b. 1858, and Matthew b. 1860. All of these folks came to America around 1863-65 except Bridget, Matthew, the first Patrick and the first Pierce.

I found Patrick Mooney living in Russellstown New, Kilronan, County Waterford in 1846. That is the only record I have on him,

Please let me know if you have any information on any of these Mooneys or suggestions you might have.

Thank you.

Pat

James P. Mooney, Pike County, Illinois, Murder

Does anyone have any more info on the James Mooney mentioned in the article below? J. P. Mooney is buried at Ball's Bluff Cemetery, Atlas, Pike County, Illinois and he is the fellow they are mentioning in the article, but he didn't die until 1900. I can't find out anything else about this murdered man.......
These articles were in the Quincy, Illinois newspapers:

The Quincy Herald, September 12, 1894, Front page
MORE ABOUT THE MURDER
A Letter From a Barry Grocer To Chief Ahern

W.H. Mayes Tells of the Finding Of The Body
Of The Murdered Man Near Cincinnati Landing
Last Saturday Afternoon--The Two Boats Described
Yesterday's Herald contained a telegraphic dispatch from Hannibal giving particulars of the finding of the body of a man who had been murdered on the river bank south of that city on Saturday afternoon.
The supposition is that the man was James Mooney, whose relatives live at Atlas, in Pike County, this state. The identity, however, has not been fully established.
By this morning's mail, Chief Ahern received a letter from W. H. Mayes, junior member of the firm of G. D. Mayes & Son, dealers in groceries and provisions at Barry. The letter reads as follows:
Barry, Ill., Sept. 11--Chief of Police, Quincy, Illinois--On Saturday, afternoon about 2 o'clock, there was a man found murdered on an island just across from Cincinnati Landing, about twelve miles from this place on the Mississippi. He had dark clothes, black hat, dark mustache and dark hair; beard of about a week's growth. He came down the river in an old boat which had been painted green. He made a palette on the ground with a blanket and it is supposed fell asleep where there was another party came down the river with a skiff which had a figure 3 upon it, and a nice boot track could be seen leading from the skiff to the palette where the murdered man lay. He tied his skiff to a small tree, and when he left he cut the rope which answered to the piece left on the boat which was found. The murdered man was lying on his right side and had his hat down on his face, and the other party walked around him and dealt him a blow which is supposed to have been done with an ax. He almost severed the head from the body, but he then must have hit him twice and then went through his pockets, which were turned inside out. He hauled him to the river and threw the body in ---or rather, he dragged him. The body was pulled from the river by other parties, as I learned from a gentleman who was over on Sunday and saw the body and noted the surroundings. The party had a small scar on right leg, probably made by a gun shot.
I believe it would pay you to investigate the matter. Richard Purcell as well as the Quincy Journal folks can give you all information in regards to me.
W. H. Mayes
*******************************************************************************************************************
The Quincy Morning Whig
Sept. 12, 1894 Page 3
MURDER MOST FOUL
A PIKE COUNTY, ILL, MAN FOUND DEAD
HIS HEAD NEARLY CUT OFF
His Name was J. H. Roberts--His Body Found At The Head Of Gilbert's Island--Particulars of the Ghastly Find
The Hannibal Courier-Post gives the following particulars of the finding of a murdered man at the head of Gilberts' Island in Ralls County, Mo.:
About 8 o'clock Saturday night Esquire J. R. Miller, of Taylor Switch, in Ralls County, was notified by a couple of fisherman from near the cut-off opposite Gilberts' Island (which is also known as Dickason Island) that a foul murder had been committed at the head of said island, and that the body of a fisherman with the head partly severed from the body was there tied up in the river near the scene of the murder.
Early Sunday morning Esquire Miller sent for Constable West and had a jury summoned. Considerable trouble was experienced in getting boats to convey the officers and jury to the island, but after a long wait in the broiling sun Constable West succeeded in getting a boat, and the officers and jury, together with your reporter, pulled out upon the bosom of the Mississippi and down to the scene of the murder.
On arrival, we found a motley crowd of fisherman and spectators gathered around in knots and groups discussing the murder and the probably cause that led to it.
The dead man was lying in the water with the partly severed head just resting on the edge of the sand and some kindly hand had placed some green boughs over the face to keep the broiling rays of the sun off.
Just above, on a bed of sand, were spread the bloody quilts where the poor fellow had taken his last sleep. There were also the hat--a soft black hat--with the rim split as clean as though done with a razor; a pair of good, stout, heavy shoes and socks and some underclothing were spread out nearby. These evidently belonged to the dead man; but there were also a new cap and vest and a smaller pair of fine black woolen socks that doubtless belonged to a boy or a man not so large as the dead man.
A bottle of Dr. Miles heart remedy, some patent medicine circulars and almanacs were lying on the sand, but no writing of any kind could be found. The murderer had taken precaution to destroy all clues by which the body might be identified.
The dead man was dressed in a good and substantial working suit. The pockets of the pants had been turned inside out, showing conclusively the motive of the murder had been robbery. He was about 5 feet 8 or 10 inches high, weighed about 165 pounds, was supposed to be 35 or 40 years old, and had sandy mustached and sideburn whiskers.
There were two boats tied to the bank. One was supposed to belong to a boathouse, as it had a number 3 on the bow. This was a pretty fair boat, and as it was the one that had been cut loose by the murdered in his haste to get to the Missouri shore, it was evidently his boat. This boat was found where it had floated against a sandbar when it had been abandoned by the murderer. It was brought back and tied beside the dead man's boat. A log chain was found in this boat. The dead man's boat was a frail affair. It contained his cooking outfit and some meat and coffee and a head of cabbage, two new tin plates and knives and forks and other things, which went to prove the two had started out to camp together. The fishing tackle was not complete, and it was supposed by the fisherman present that the parties were out more for pleasure than profit. A copy of the Quincy Journal was found in this boat. The fishing tackle did not seem to have been used much, if any. It was considered the parties had just started out and the murder was committed at the first opportunity.
The body was given in charge of Constable West, who towed it down the river a distance of six miles to Saverton, where it was identified by Mr. Harter and wife as James Hogan, who worked at Harter's saw mill a couple of years ago at Saverton. Other parties at Saverton also identified the body as James Hogan, who worked at Harter's sawmill at Saverton. It is possible that he went under an assumed name while at Saverton. It is said that he has a wife and children in Indiana.
J. H. Roberts, of Pike county, Ill., came before the jury and made the following statement: I think I know the man who lies dead here; his name is James Mooney; his folks live near Atlas, in Pike County, Ill., and was raised with him from a boy, but have not seen him for some time. He is a step-son of a man by the name of Marion. If he is the same man he has a gunshot wound on the right leg; it was done about nine years ago.
The clothing was ordered cut from the dead man and upon examination the scar of the wound was found on the right leg which looked like a gunshot wound. This left but little doubt regarding the man's identity.
The boy who said he knew the boat was called and made the following statement: My name is Howard Lee; I am 16 years old; I am the boy that went for the fisherman when my father discovered there had been a murder committed. I know the boat, it belongs in Keokuk; a boy by the name of Bibby was corking it; his initials B. T. are on the front seat; the boat was built by a man named Miller; he is an engineer at Carter's planing mill at Keokuk, he did not keep the boat long; he sold it to a man by the name of Miller at Keokuk.
After hearing this statement the jury returned the following verdict:
We, the jury, find that the dead body of an unknown man, found in the river on the east bank of the island, near the head of the island, came to his death by some unknown person or persons by being cut twice on the left side of the neck, severing the jugular vein, with some sharp instrument.
***********************************************************************************************************************
The Quincy Daily Journal Sept. 18, 1894
WAS HE MURDERED?
The Body of A Boy Found In The River Below Hannibal--Then Lost Again-Supposed to be the Ross lad of Quincy--The Post Thinks He Was Murdered
There is hardly any doubt but that a double murder was committed on Gilbert's Island a week ago last Saturday. A full account of the murder of James Mooney has been published in the Courier-Post. At the time the body of James Mooney was found a quantity of clothing was discovered near the scene of the murder that did not belong to the murdered man. This clothing belonged to some boy, and the matter was spoken of at the time the inquest was held over the body of Mooney, but no satisfactory accounty could be given of them. Some of those present suggested that it was possible that a boy had been murdered also, but no evidence save those of the clothing could be found.
Sunday, however, while a gentleman was searching in the river near the scene of the murder with a pair of grab hooks, he caught the body of a boy and raised it above the water, but it dropped off the hooks into the river again and he failed to recover it. The water is very deep at that point, and being a kind of eddy it is supposed that the body drifted away. This confirms the report that two people were killed on the island at the same time, but that of the boy has not been identified. A boy named Ross left his home in Quincy on the day before the murder was committed. He came down the river in a boat, and we understand that he has not been heard of since. If this be true, it is quite possible that it was his body found in the river yesterday by the fisherman. As stated above, the body was found within a few feet of the place where Mooney's body was first discovered.
It is somewhat strange that no clue can be found leading to the apprehension of this horrible murder, but it seems to have been done so clandestinely that all traces were covered up and hidden from view. --Hannibal Post
A Journal reported called at the home of the boy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rose, 1314 North Fourth Street, this morning, and was told, substantially, the following facts by Mrs. Rose. "No, that isn't my boy. He's at home. He came home Saturday with his grandmother. His name is Eddie and he's 12 years old. He didn't go to Hannibal at all, but his father went there to hunt him. Eddie left home Sunday night a week and took the train at the depot here and went to Canton, Missouri, to his grandma's, Mrs. Charles Rose. We didn't know where he was, but my husband thought maybe he had gone down the river in a skiff and fallen asleep so he (my husband) got a skiff and started out, going as far as Hannibal, but he couldn't find him. Well, Monday afternoon a week we got a letter from his grandma saying he, Eddie, was there and she brought him home last Saturday."
Dear Kathy -

I tried sending you and email via the email listing on Ancestry.com but it bounced back. I'd love to communicate with you regarding the Mooney & Hilliard families. My name is Julie & my email is jbujalski@verizon.net.

Here is a copy of the email I sent. If you or anyone else can help me with this, I'd greatly appreciate it. I've hit the wall. Especially on the Hilliard side.......

My great grandmother is Eunice Lucy Hilliard (some say it is Lucy Eunice Hilliard). She is the daughter of the Hilliard that married Jacob Mooney. The trees on Ancestry.com have vastly different information on Jacob Mooney’s marriages which has driven me crazy trying to research and I’m hoping someone can help me with this.

Some have that Jacob was married 3 times. Variations include Mary Polly Thogmorton, Mary L Hilliard, Mary S West, Martha M Hilliard, etc, etc. I can prove that Jacob was married to a Polly Thogmorton because of the marriage records translated on Ancestry.com. (Not sure where the Mary in Polly’s name comes from but maybe you can explain that - I do see the name Mary Thogmorton on one of her child’s death records). And I can deduce that Eunice Lucy & Rachel Adelaide Hilliard’s father was a “Hilliard” from the 1850 Census where a Mary & Jacob Mooney are listed with Mooney & Hilliard children. I’ve checked all the death records of Jacob’s children that are available on-line (which isn’t all of them) to see parent’s names. I can only find the following - Edith Olivia Mooney Thompson, which states Mary Thogmorton, Sallie Mooney Hoke, which states Mary Hilliard, & Moulton Avery Mooney, which only lists Jacob, but no mother. The rest of the children that I gleen from census records don’t have death certificates available on line.

This 2001 post makes the most sense to me as a researcher which says there were two marriages, Mary Polly Thogmorton & Mary L Hilliard. Assuming this is true…….I’m desperately trying to find who Mary was married to previous to Jacob (assuming she didn’t have Rachel Adelaide & Eunice Lucy out of wedlock). And if indeed, she was married previous to Jacob, then her maiden name would not be Hilliard. This person would be my great grandfather.

Can anyone help me sort through Jacob’s marriages and more importantly, Mary L Hilliard's background?

Julie
James Mooney (b.1820 Kings Co.) & Mary Cannon (b.1827, Galway) migrated to Australia c.1844

I am searching for information on my g.great grandparents, James (aka ‘Jas’ or ‘James Patrick’) Mooney & Mary Cannon (name variously recorded as ‘Canning’ ‘Conolly’ ‘Connor’ ‘Canan’ ‘Cameron’ ‘Cannan’)and their children.

James was born in c.1820 Kings Co. Ireland & died 1902 in Victoria Australia. Mary was born c. 1827, Galway (? Bir Bir), Ireland & died in 1904 in Victoria, Australia.

James’s parents were possibly Dennis Mooney & Annie Fox (although I have not been able to fully confirm this). Mary’s parents were Michael Cannon & Bridget Coglan. I have not been able to find any siblings for either James or Mary.

From my research, it appears that James & Mary were married Bet. 1841–1843 in Galway, Ireland. Mary was 16 yrs old.

I have been unable to find any information on their lives or family in Ireland, & on their migration to Australia.

From information taken on Mary’s d/c in 1904, it appears that they may have arrived in Australia c. 1844 as it was stated that they had spent 8 years in the colony of NSW & then 51 yrs in the colony of Victoria (possibly travelling from NSW to VIC in 1852).

The children I have been able to find are:
1. John Mooney b.1849 (although he is recorded as the 1st child on his siblings b/cs & his parent’s d/cs, it is a lot of years since his parent’s marriage (btw 1841-1843) & their arrival into Australia (1844) & his birth). On parent's d/c John was recorded as the 1st child & 57yrs in 1902 & 59yrs in 1904. I can find no other information on John.
2. Michael Mooney b.c1851. On mother's d/c 1902 Michael recorded as 4th child & 50yrs. On father's d/c 1904 recorded as 3rd child & 54yrs. I can find no other information on Michael although there was a family story that he went to Queensland.
3. Dennis Mooney b.1852 Pentridge, Epping, VIC. d. 1936 Narrandera, NSW. m. 1877 Kilmore, VIC to Mary Ann Seymour
4. Bridget Mooney b.1853 Richmond, VIC. d.1929. m.1876 Seymour, VIC to Michael Kenney
5. James (Jim) Mooney b.1855 Melbourne VIC. Bachelor Lived with youngest brother Tom Mooney on "Fairlight" & then lived with another brother Larry Mooney on "Reefton"
6. Charles Mooney b.1856 Cardigan St., North Melbourne, VIC m.1885 to Catherine Kenney
7. Patrick Mooney b.1857. On parent's d/c recorded as 5th/6th child & 46yrs in 1902 & 49yrs in 1904.No other information
8. Mary Ann Mooney b.1857 Keilor Plains, VIC d.1889. No other information
9. Lawrence Mooney b.1859 Keilor Plains, VIC d.1902 Geelong VIC m.1863 to Bridget Nicholson
10. Jane Mooney b.1858/9 Keilor Plains, VIC. Dead before 1902. No other information
11. Margaret Mooney b.c.1860-1866. On father's d/c listed as 9th child & 36yrs. Listed on mother's d/c as 8th child & 42yrs in 1904. On Charles b/c aged 4yrs in 1856. Possibly suffered from TB. No other information.
12. Catherine Mooney b.1861 Keilor Plains, VIC d.1861
13. Thomas Mooney b.1862 Keilor, VIC d.1943 Beckom NSW m.1886 Sarah Maria Hoskinson

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I tend to believe all these Neshoba county, MS Mooneys are related. Many of the Mooney men in my family died from a flu epidemic that broke out at Camp Shelby in Hattisburg, MS when they were working there as a construction crew at the time. My grandfather, Daniel Jackson Mooney, was a contractor and he won a bid for some of the work there. He rounded up all the able bodied mooney men he could get from the family and off they went. As the story goes in my family, only a few of them, my grandfather being one, survived the flu epidemic there. Has anybody else out there heard about this from family members? I have seen gravesites where adult Mooney men died days apart and are buried close to each other, in a cemetery where many of my Mooney family members are buried, near Crystal Springs, MS. I would love to discover a link to my Mooney people!

I have a Pink Mooney listed in the 1870 Neshoba County, Mississippi Census age 10, female, white, born in MS. She is listed with James Gipson,26; Nancy,32; Pink; & Nancy Baggett 65, born GA. I am trying to figure out how all of these people are related. There is a Nancy Jane Baggett that was married to Jacob Mooney but as far as I can tell if he did die that early so that she could have remarried, she was still Nancy Jane Mooney when she died.

The 1850 census is not specific on family relationships, I wish it was. I would explore the possibility that the Mooneys were William Byrd's grandparents. If you can find a marriage between a Byrd and Mooney, this would be a good hint. I've had the same problem before, good luck.

I would certainly be interested in what you have. My Mooney family tree is here in ancestry.com. It seems the father of Hugh Mooney (name unknown) came from Antrim with his family and Hugh Mooney is my direct line.

My family seems to have all emigrated to Quebec so a WI connection would not work. Antrim is where they came from all right but Mooney was a common name. Patrick and James are common in our line. I'll keep l;poking for a connection. If they came to WI from Quebed we might have something.

The 1850 Federal Census shows Jonathon Mooney, his wife, Mildred (MIllie) his children, and a boy, William Byrd, 9 years old. William Byrd is my ancestor. Any idea how he came to live with the Mooneys? This has been my brickwall for many years. There does not seem to be a connection with the Byrds in Rutherford County. Johnathon Mooney also was a witness to William Byrds wedding!
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,\Deb

I want to pursue your lead about Hugh Mooney and Margret Boorman. I'll look at at and get back to you this weekend. Thanks Brian. I know that my Mooney tree is from Rasharkin. I've found a Mooney from Rasharkin on a boat in 1867, pursuing that. The Mooney's settled in shannon Quebec and I have a book I need to read about that area.

Dennis

Yes, I'm afraid that's my Patrick and Margaret Bolland.

However, because I have never determined from a DC that this Patrick was the son of Hugh Mooney and Margaret Boorman, can you enlighten me about that relationship?

Brian

Dear Dennis,

Thank you for writing. To the best I can determine, my Hugh Mooney and Margaret Boorman had a son, Patrick. He married in Scotland and he and his wife had at least 5 children there. I lose the family after the last birth certificate following the 1841 census. My Hugh and Margaret did (by documentation) have Andrew and Richard, both born in Antrim, most probably Rasharkin. If you would like to compare notes, please let me know. My e-mail address is mdunnagal@aol.com

Cheers,

Brian

Further to an earlier message-

If your Patrick Mooney married Margaret Bolland in Scotland then its not the same Patrick and the same Hugh as in my charts. Sorry about that. Patrick and Hugh fare common Mooney names.

We might have a similar ancestor if your Hugh Mooney of Antrim has a son Patrick which is my direct line. It appears Andrew went to Scotland and Patrick went to Canada. But I have Hugh Mooney going to Canada and at age 65 appearing in a census. It looks like he was living in Patrick's house when counted in the survey. I'm still working on it.
