Robert Moorhead, studying in London 1851 with family in Dublin

I'm looking for connections to this couple - Emily nee Tandy and Robert Moorhead, who had a daughter Emily Jane Moorhead, born in London in Sept 1850.

The 1851 English census lists Robert, a medical student who was born about 1814. His birthplace is illegible - Oceana? Ocrana? - but wherever it was, he is listed as a British Subject.

Emily and the baby are not with him. A family letter of June 1851 indicates that in late 1850 Emily was living in Dublin with Cath Moorhead and she may have been there at the time of the census.

I suspect that Cath was Robert's mother. She was born about 1796 and died in Jun 1851. Her husband's name was John and there were at least two siblings: Catherine and James. Both were younger than Robert.

Robert's relationship with Emily appears to have ended some time in the 1850s. Emily was married when they met, so any formal marriage to Robert would have been bigamy on her part. She remarried in 1865, listing herself as a widow, but I don't know whether this was of her first husband, who had died in 1860, or of Robert. The daughter went on to marry Samuel Phillips Day in Yorkshire in 1872.

Does anyone recognize Robert, son of John and Cath Moorhead of Dublin?

Thanks
Evelyn

John Moorheads & Agnes Gilkey

I am a descendant of John Moorhead (born 1730 in County Monaghan, Town Tullykinney, Ireland) who was married to Elizabeth Dunn. Their son, William Moorhead (married to Agnes Gilkey) moved to a homestead on Gilkey's Creek in present-day Cherokee County, South Caronia (used to be Union County). Evidently, the town was called Gowdeyville, but it no longer exists (near present-day Saratt, S.C.). William and Agnes had a son, John, who married Elizabeth Goudelock. They later moved to Tennessee (around 1820). I am from Tennessee, and that branch of the William Moorhead clan.

I am looking for information about a "Moorhead family cemetery," mentioned in some family records that I have. I understand that William and Agnes are buried there, somewhere near the banks of Gilkey's Creek. If anyone knows the whereabouts of this cemetery, I would greatly appreciate the information.

Also, I have an extensive geneology of the Moorheads of South Carolina, tracing all the lines from William Moorhead/Elizabeth Dunn. It is broken down by each of their eight children. I would be glad to share with anyone who is interested.

Thanks,
James Moorehead (Wichita, Kansas)

Frank Moorhead

I have hit my brick wall. My great-grandfather Frank Moorhead, possible middle initial D. I show him born in June 1871 in Pennsylvania, I believe western PA. In 1899 he married my g-grandmother Beryl "Lennie" Kline, and my grandmother Mary Frances Moorhead was born Dec 10, 1899. Ths only other thing I know about Frank is that the family lived in Louisiana and Texas early in the century. The tale my grandmother told was that Frank died in the oil field he was working on, because he went to work one day and never came back. However, we don't know if that is true or if he just left them. Either way, Lennie remarried, and her and Mary are on the 1920 census with the new husband.
Anyone have any info?
Thanks!

I am interested in any information you might have on the family of James L. Varner and his wife, Sarah Moorhead, daughter of Joseph Moorhead and Lydia Clanton.

My husband's ancestors include the Verner/Varner family of South Carolina. John Verner, Jr. married Jane Edmundson. Three children were born to them including James L. Varner.
I've not been able to find very much about him.

I have the Moorhead research compiled by Paul A. Moorhead and found Sarah Moorhead and James L. Varner on page 19. My Moorhead line is through John Moorhead, Jr.

Thanks and I'll await your reply. I know what you mean about moving. We moved back to SC in Aug. and I'm still trying to find things. Add the downsizing we did and it's a real challenge.

I'll still make the drive over to look for the cemetery. It will be a good genealogical exercise for me. I'd rather be outdoors with this new obsession than tied to the computer.

Thanks again for your reply.

Betty Smith

I realize your post is quite a few years old. I'm just starting to research my family. John/Emily Moorhead are in the line and I would love to get anything about the family you are willing to send. What part of TN? We lived in the tri-cities area for about ten years.

We aren't too far from Union Co. SC now and I'll try and find the cemetary this spring, if you haven't already. I should probably read all the replies throught he years.

Thank you,

Alberta died in June, 1963 in Florida. I do not know when Louis died. I also do not know if they had children together. I know Alberta had a son, Chalmer W. Gill (B.1899) to a former husband.

am looking for the ancestors of my gggrandfather, Thomas Moorhead (Muirhead?). All I can find (via various Censuses)is that he and wife Hanna (NLN) were born in Ireland and living in Aurora, Kane, Illinois during 1870, 1880, 1900 perhaps thru 1910 - don't know death dates.

Their children were Thomas D (b.1869) Hanna M (b.1870) and Carolyn "Carrie" (b.1873) Thomas D. married Margaret Manogue. They had 14 children. Hanna apparently never married but lived with her sister Carrie (Toolen) and husband.

I can find nothing further back on this family. I suspect they may be Muirheads from Scotland via Ireland. I found a naturaliztion record for a Thomas Moorhead in Illinois for 1874 - but my Thomas is on the 1870 census.

Anyone else have any ifo on these folks?
