Also a Morden!

My family as far as I know was based out of Sarnia Ontario in the early years, and has since spread around a bit, but we're mostly in southern Ontario still. I understand that there used to be a "Morden Hotel" in Sarnia many many years ago. Any info anyone has would be appreciated!

I have also been wondering when the Mordens moved fron Flamborough to London Township. The appear in a 1819 list of London Township settlers, but a history of Dundas says Ann and her son John sold up and left the area in 1808.
My ancestor John Sutton (brother of John Morden's wife Hannah) bought land from the Mordens in 1811. The Suttons also moved to the London area (Westminster Twp.) around 1818.
London Township was not settled before 1818-1819, so where was Ann Morden before that, if not still in Dundas?

Diane B.

I think the Welsh connection is through Lucretia's father, John Howell. Apparently the Howells were Welsh. To the best of my knowledge, the Mordens were from Yorkshire.

Thank you for posting the next page which after rereading some of my notes, I find I had previously copied!

Of interest is a statement in the Epilogue to If Ponies Rode Men - The Journeys of Robert Land, 1777-1791 by James Elliott, 1999, Hawthorn Ink, Hamilton, ON. "Seven years after Ralph Morden was hanged, Ann Morden, three sons, three daughters, a son-in-law and three grandchildren made the trek to Upper Canada settling in Queenston for three years before moving down the lake to the site of what is now Dundas."

This would explain how Ann's daughter, Ellen Morden, met Gilbert Field who lived on lot 15 between Queenston and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Their first child, George, was born 21 Feb 1790. On 13 Oct 1795 my 2nd great grandfather, David McFall, was born to them. In 1800 they built a large brick home on lot 15 which miraculously survived the War of 1812 and still stands.

You have certainly done extensive research on your line. I don't see any sources quoted in this booklet so one cannot determine which statements are true but it tells an interesting story that make you wonder about it's source.

The next page from where I left off says:
When the American colonists rebelled against British rule in 1775, Ralph, being a good Quaker, took no part in the struggle. Moses Morden joined the New Jersey volunteers and served with them until 1784 when he was discharged, a veteran at the age of twenty. James joined His Majesty's Provincial Regiment, The King's Royal of New York, and got his discharge in Montreal in 1785.
Back in Pennsylvania, Ralph was caught helping his neighbor, Robert Land, to escape through the water gap at Delaware. Robert Land, who later became the first settler in Hamilton, Ont., escaped to help the British, but Ralph was caught, charged with traitorous conspiracy, and was hanged November 25th, 1780, at Easton, Pa.
Following his father's death, John, the eldest son, enlisted in the King's Royal Regiment, serving until February, 1884, when he returned home and persuaded his mother, Ann, to move to Canada. She wrote Robert Land, but the uncertain mails of those days did not bring her an answer until 1786. Land advised them to come to the head of lake Ontario. The Mordens set out early in 1787 with four hundred other Pennsylvanians. Arriving at Fort Niagara, John and Ralph, Jr., sought out Robert Land, inspected the Burlington Bay and Cootes Paradise areas with him and decided to settle on the slopes of the Flamborough mountain. They cleared a piece of land and built a cabin that fall, returning in the spring to Fort Niagara for their mother and brothers. The family settled on their several lands, but Ann and several of the sons with their families moved to London Township in 1822. Ann died there at the age of 89. John, her eldest son, also died there at the age of 64.
Moses and James remained in their Grants in West Flamboro and the scion of Moses still resides in the Township...

Good luck in your research.

Anne, Thank you for posting the West Flamborough Centennial book material. However, I believe it contains several errors:

This is the first I ever heard that Ralph Morden "migrated to Pennsylvania in 1762 in search of religious freedom." From other records it would appear that Ralph was brought to the U.S. by his father, George, shortly after his birth. Ralph paid taxes/assessments in Mount Bethel Twp., Northampton Co., Penna. in 1761 as a single man. He also paid taxes as follows--1765 taxed, 1766 6#, 1767 7#, 1768 9#, 1770 8#, 1773 12#, 1776 & 1778 taxed. Source: FHL films 021680/2/4/5,

There is no primary evidence to show that Ralph was ever a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers). From Muster Rolls of Forces on the Frontiers of NJ 1757-1758 we find New Jersey had a line of forts on the NJ frontier from Fort Redding (Belvidere near Oxford to Port Jervis, NJ). Ralph Mordin served from 8 June to 20 July 1757 and Ralph Morden/Mordan/Morgan served five times between 12 July 1757 and 20 July 1758. The tour of duty lasted 30 days and recruited woodsmen over the age of 21, however the article says regular militia began at 16. www.njskylands.com/hsgrguar.htm With all this military service I personally believe the Quaker thing was a way of explaining away Ralph's involvement with Robert Land, a British Agent. Note that Port Jervis is near Cochecton.

Ann's father, John Durham, arrived in Mt. Bethel before Ralph as follows:
30 Nov 1751 - received an additional 100 acres in Mount Bethel Township; Pennsylvania Archives, 3rd Series, Vol. 24, p. 123
8 Dec 1752 - Land warrant to John Durham joining his other lands and Theophelus Partridge (along Cobuss Creek in Upper Mt. Bethel Twp.); Proprietary Grants in Northampton co., Penn. 1752-1774. FHL film 0021686
This tract was later patented to Christopher Baker, Pennsylvania Patent Book P-15, p. 459 State Archvies, Harrisburg
12 Jun 1753 - Land warrant to John Long adjoining John Durham on Cobuss Creek.
4 June 1757 - enlisted, term 3 yrs, age 35 yrs, born Ireland. Source: Muster rolls of Major Joseph Shippen Co. of Foot, 2nd Bat of PA Reg. Commanded by Lt. Col. James Burd from 10 Sep 1757 to June 1, 1758. Pennsylvania Archives 5th series, Vol. 1, page 195.
(1758) List and return of the numbers of waggons and baught horses and pack horses in the township of Mountbethel. John Durram 1 pack house, Thos Carty 1 pack. Source: Pennsylvania Archives 5th series, vol. 1, page 211
Appears on tax rolls for Mt. Bethel Twp. 1761-73; FHL films 0021680/2/4/5
12 Mar 1774 - received another grant adjoining his other land; FHL film 0021687
Pobate of will 25 May 1774, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania; Source: FHL film 49586 no. 517
From the above we see that John was also involved in the militia, reducing the chances of Ann being a Quaker who had influenced Ralph to join the Society of Friends as was suggested by Prof. John M. Coleman in "The Treason of Ralph Morden and Robert Land", Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biograhy , Vol. 79 (1955), pp. 440-441. Ann's mother was a Roman Catholic as indicated by the baptism of Ann and her siblings by Father Schneider in Bucks County. See Records of the American Catholic Historical Society, Vol. 2, (1886-88), pp. 316-320.

I could be wrong or just careless about the "county" designation --- maybe they were just townships. The location is right. Ralph & his wife were both interesting people. My connection is through Ralph's brother George. He came in about 1796 with his son David & they joined Anne & others in Flamborough. George ran a sawmill. He was not officially at least, A Loyalist & he paid for his land.He & David & other family members moved to land near Stouffeville or Markham in what was York township where they settled with other immigrants from Pennsylvania.

The 1955 article indeed is very interesting, but I would warn the reader of the following statement made by Prof. Coleman, "In any case, Ann was definitely a Quaker, and Ralph Morden very possibly became a Quaker through her."

Ann Durham was baptized Anna Dorm 29 May 1743 at Haycock, Bucks, PA by Father Schneider. Her mother Catherine was a Roman Catholic and probably Irish as all the Godparents of her children had Irish surnames. Her father John Durham is listed as a Protestant in the baptism record Ann's sister Margaret who was baptized 17 Feb 1745 near Dorm [sic] furnace. Dorm Furnace is Durham furnace in northeast Bucks County and has appropriate historical markers. The earliest mention of a Durham-Dorm relationship is in the paper "Saint John the Baptist Church of Haycock" that was read before the Bucks County Historical Society by J. H. Fitzgerald in 1910.

Some may point to the minutes of the Adolphus[town] Women's Society of Friends that show Ann Morden expressed her desire to become a member 16 Feb 1809. Personally I believe this request was made by Mary Ann Morden the wife of Judah Bowerman a known Quaker.

This is the first that I have ever heard of a Flamborough County. However, there are East and West Flamborough Townships in Wentworth Couty immediately to the northwest of the City of Hamilton, Ontario which include Dundas where many of the expatriate Mordens settled after leaving Pennsylvania in 1787.

My connection is through Eleanor Morden the daughter of Ralph Morden (1742-1780) and Ann Durham (1743-1832).

I'm not sure either if there were two of them, I'll check the next time I am in the library. "Ralph Morden" is certainly a distinguished name in UEL history --- my branch, through George, is not UEL. The lovely lady who did so much research on your branch estimated that there are about 6,000 Morden cousins!

I think I may have seen this info in a book on United Empire Loyalists which I believe applies to that branch in Sophiasburg, P.E. Co. They had many children!

If you are a Morden related to Laurania Howell I believe there is an extensive family history of that branch, the one that moved to Prince Edward Co. in Ontario, Canada. This history was compiled by a delightful lady in California who was 90 when I corresponded with her many years ago. She was a superb researcher & left a copy in Frontenac Public Library in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Hello, Craig - I am so pleased to find that someone has information about George Morden, brother of Ralph. I am a descendant of George through his son David, David's son James, James' daughter Bethana. I have a copy of a land purchase by George near that of his brother James on the Allegheny (Sp?) in Pennsylvania. I have one also for land purchase in Flamborough Co. in what is now Ontario. This was signed by son David who later moved to York Co. near Toronto, not far from Stouffville where they eventually lived. Apart from some information on George's move from Pennsylvania & his purchase of a sawmill in Flamborough Co. I know little about him.

Hi I am a Morden by birth and live in England. My great grandfather was either George Samuel Morden or Samuel George Morden born about 1860 apparentely in Brighton Sussex England but no record of him being born in Brighton has been found yet. He married a Mary Ann Bonner born 1860 in Brighton and they had 8 children 4 died in childhood.
Mary Ann had another child after he died.George died aged about 40 in 1900. Their youngest child Albert was my grandfather. Have you any information on Mordens still in England? Could he have come back to England from Canada?

Your George is several generations prior to this. I assume George's descendants were born in the USA? If so, do you know anything about George's ancesters in the UK?

Bill

Thank you Bill. I know of Sir John Morden and have filed him away for a time if and when any connections are made. Are you aware of a John Morden, born about 1545 in Morton Morell, Warwickshire, England? He married Katherine Marston. Also Robert Morden, the mapmaker? These have always been people of interest to me.

To answer your question about Daniel. I have no information on him other than his date of birth (1688). There is no evidence that he ever left England. Neither is there evidence that Thomas left. Thomas had three sons James R., George and Moses. It appears that James R. and George were the only ones to leave England. They brought their families over and settled in Pennsylvania around 1743. I read somewhere that George had two sons (unnamed) who returned to England.

It is frustrating that we have no information on those family members who stayed in England. We would also need more on the missing generations between your Joseph and Samuel. So many questions!

I would really appreciate the information that you have on the `historical` Mordens, when you find it. Thank you.

Kathy

Thursday 18th Feb

Hi Kathy

Further to yesterdays message, I've obviously mislaid some of my Morden papers during our last house-move. However, one Morden that is of interest, as there was some evidence he was an ancestor, was a Sir John Morden. He was created a Baronet in 1688 and was a great Turkey merchant (Turkey as in country, not bird!!) He apparently founded a College in Blackheath, London, England for "decayed Turkey merchants. His coat of arms was a fluer-de-lis gu. His titled land was Wrickesmarsh, Kent.

He was the son of a George Morden, a London goldsmith. In 1662 he married Susan Brand (1638-1721) daughter of Joseph Brand of Suffolk. The couple were childless, so he is not a direct ancestor. He died in 1708.

I also recall a Sir John Morden was a Lord Mayor of London circa 1387.

If I dig up anything else I'll let you know.

Regards,

Bill

Hi Kathy

Let's hope that we do find a connection. Morden is not a common name in the UK. Before the days of the internet I reviewed the name Morden in the UK telephone directories, and if my memory serves me right, there were about 350.

I believe that the Morden clan started in the County of Dorset. I guess from your dates it would have been Daniel that emigrated, or was it one of his descendants? From Samuel b1665 to Joseph b1790 there probably would have been 3-4 generations. Some time soon I'm hoping to do some more on the Morden side of my family, until recently I have concentrated on Littlewood, my Dad's mother's family. I do have quite alot of info' about the "historical" Mordens, I'll collate it and email it to you. It'll be a week or so, so be patient. In the mean time, if you find anything else, do let me know. There must be something in the frequency o0f the four male names as these too feature in my family, my son being a John as was my Grt Grandfather.

I don't know of any Welsh connection, but it isnice to have a town named after you, there is a place called Morden in Surrey, near London!!

Best wishes,

Bill

Good morning Bill,
Unfortunately there is no connection that I can see, although the names Joseph, John, William and Arthur are all common in my family tree.
I am very interested in finding the connection with the Mordens in England. I believe we are all related. I can trace my family back to a Samuel Morden, born 1665 in Yorkshire, England. He had two sons: Thomas and Daniel. My line comes down from Thomas, but I know nothing about Daniel. Perhaps that is where the connection lies.
My Mordens left England and settled in America around 1743. For the most part, they were United Empire Loyalists and were granted land in what was then Upper Canada for supporting the British. My gg grandfather Alvey Baker Morden left Walkerton, Ontario in 1874 for the purpose of taking government land to farm in Manitoba. My great grandfather, Albert Hutchinson Morden was only 17 at the time and kept a journal of the trip. He stated that his father was so ardent a Loyalist that he refused to travel through any part of the States even though it would have been a much easier way to go. They ended up securing land in southern Manitoba. The town of Morden, Manitoba was built on their land and named after them when the Canadian railway came through.

Are you aware of any Welsh connections with the Mordens? All my life I have been told I was Welsh but I can't find any basis for that assumption. Everything points back to England.

Kathy

Hi Kathy

None of the names mean anything to me. I can trace my Morden line back to a Joseph Morden born c1790. He and his wife, Ann, lived in Clerkenwell, a borough of London. He was a Hatter by trade. Their eldest son Joseph was born in Clerkenwell in 1817 and married a Mary Ann Peters in Hougham in Kent, England in 1838. He ran a tailoring business in Clerkenwell, London. Their fifth child was a John Willim Morden b 1851 in the Parish of St James in Westminster, London. He too was a tailor and emigrated to India c1870. He was my Grt Grandfather.
Both my Grandfather, Arthur Ernest Morden, and my Father, Arthur William Morden, were born in India. My Father returned to England in 1931, I was born here in 1945. William John's siblings were: Eliza Harriot b1839; Joseph b 1842; Emilia b1844; Mary Ann b1849 George Frederick b1854. They were all born in or around Clekenwell.
Do you see any connection?
Regards,

Bill

Bill, I'm sorry. Cheryl was responding to me - I jumped into the middle of your correspondance.

You asked about Joseph (born 1740) and if any of his siblings stayed behind in England. I don't know. I know he was the grandson of Thomas Morden, born 1690. Thomas had four children: James R.(born 1711), Moses (born 1712), George(born 1715),and Jane(born 1717).

Thomas was the son of Samuel Morden, born October 14, 1665. Samuel also had a son named Daniel, born 1688. Do you connect with any of these?

Kathy

Hi

No, I'm an "English" Morden, apart from a period in British India 1870-1931, my Grandfather and my Father were born there. I was born in Manchester, England. My ancestral line descends from Joseph Morden c1790 in London.

Regards,

Bill

Hi Cheryl

Joseph b1740 Yorkshire England will probably be the first Morden to emigrate to the USA? If so, he may be the link. Do you know anything about his ancestry, or anything about his siblings who remained in England? One of them could be the Grandfather of my Joseph born circa 1790.

Regards,

Bill Morden
