Thanks for confirming what I thought about James Turner Morehead. Also, you are right about the middle name being Theodore not Thaddeus.

I guess our hunt continues for J. T. Morehead.

Jean

J. T. Morehead /Dr. William Theodore Morehead

Most trees show the father of Dr. William Thaddeus Morehead as James Turner Morehead-governor of Ky. My question is this:
based on the Goodspeed Biography of Dr. W. T. Morehead, he was "born in Washington County, KY, in the year 1818, the son of J. T. and Sarah A. (Thomson) Morehead. Both parents died when....was 12 years old..." That means J. T Morehead died about the year 1830. Governor James Turner Morehead died in the year 1854. Biography for James Turner Morehead shows him as married to Susan A Roberts. It seems that one of the sources has to be wrong in order for James Turner Morehead to be the father of William Thaddeus Morehead. Can anyone help clear this up for me. I am a descendent of Philip Clayton Morehead, son of William T. Morehead.

Thanks, Jean

Ji Jean,
You are correct - there is no way James Turner Morehead was the father of Dr. William Morehead! All one has to do is follow the history of the Governor to prove that. The Goodspeed Arkansas History you mention was evidentially written while Dr. Morehead was still alive, but that does not mean all the information in it was correct. It is easy to ASSUME that the J.T. Morehead mentioned was the Governor, but there are several Morehead men with those initials. You are not the only descendant of Philip Clayton Morehead trying to resolve this issue.
I have only seen Dr. Morehead's middle name as Theodore. Is Thaddeus a traditional name to you? I think this will take a good deal or research of documents in Arkansas and Kentucky State libraries, and various county clerk offices, county libraries and historical societies in those areas where Moreheads lived during those times.

Please email me at nanbk@earthlink.net

I told Vonda 4 years ago that I was a little pressed for time, I doubt that she thought that meant 4 years!!
Anyway, am hoping for a snowy winter to devote some time to this. It sounds like the three of us have family in common. I am a total klutz at the trees and have messed up a couple trying to do them quickly. There are a couple of Urton ones that go back to forever if either of you haven't checked them.
I'm happy to share my email address if you're still researching.........Leslie

Vonda......is your email still at Hotmail?

Hi, Sarah!!! My dad's name is Warren Morehead Jr. My mom is Nancy, but she passed away in 1995. My Grandparents are Warren and Helen Dutzel Morehead. They have both passed away. I think I've about gone as far back on the Morehead side of the family as I can get. I just need to fill in children and spouses.
My Grandma Helen was from Canada. Other than that, both sides of my parents families are from Scotland. Is there any info in particular that you are looking for? I have been trying to look up all kinds of info and I haven't found a whole lot on Thomas. Dad remembers hearing the name, but doesn't know much either. He doesn't talk to anybody in the family much anymore.
I will email you when I have longer and tell you about myself so we can get to know each other... Hope to hear from you soon...

This is what I found on James Turner Morehead. The Governor of Kentucky and later a US Senator:

He was married to Susan A. Roberts. Susan passed away in 1839. He then married Lavinia Espy. James and Susan had Lucy Armistead, Joseph Clayton, Robert, John, and Broxx. James and Lavinia had J. Espy, Henry, Francis, and Albert.

I couldn't find anything on Nanny either. Could it possibly be a nickname???

Re: John Motley and James Turner Morehead

Thank you for the reply. My great-grandfather, John Morehead, was an African American born during slavery in about 1855 in NC. One of the Curators at the Blandwood Mansion in Greensboro, NC and an Archivist at the NC State Archives in Raleigh have stated that the probability that this family owned him is approx. 85%. My great-grandfather first appears in the 1880 Federal Census, residing in Jefferson County Arkansas near his sister (Lucy) and brother (Pink). The only African American John Morehead (who would have been abt. 15 years old) who appears in the 1870 Census was residing in KY and is listed as a "Servant" in a household. John Motley's estate papers show money being paid to a John Morehead (KY), I'm not certain abt the connection here. I've also located a memoir re: the Woodson Family, and it list the John/James Turner's older sister Elizabeth (Eliza) Woodson and her family who moved from Greensboro to Jefferson County Ark during the 1850's. They died and are buried in/near Pine Bluff, AR. An employee who oversees Bellwood Cemetery there is researching the location of their graves for me. The memoir indicates that Eliza and James Turner exchanged letters. The staff at Blandwood indicated that there is no slave history documented for this family. I'm simply trying to determine my great grandfather's beginnings/early life before he migrated to Ark, and possibly how he got there. I would greatly appreciate any information that might help me. I have been researching him since 1994...Thanks again for your reply.

James Morehead, Son of Alexander Morehead & Rachel Sherrill

I have a theory that James b. 1816 was actually James Alexander Morehead and went by the name Alexander. I have been searching for the parents of my Alexander for sometime and decided to think outside the box. I found an Alexander Morehead in 1850 Census in Western Division of Pickens Co., South Carolina. He was listed as Allexander Morehead b. abt 1824 and was in the home of David and Mary Hull. I am not sure if he was actually in their home or was a neighbor, but he is listed as a Farmer-NOT a farm laborer. He is in the same area as a few other Morehead's that are the right age to be his brothers. It's quite possible that the census is wrong on that age/birth year. Investigating further, I discovered that his parents are quite possibly Alexander Morehead and Rachel Sherril. They had a son, James, b. 1816 (same year as my Alexander) and no one can offer any information as to what happened to him and I cannot find him in later census. Yes, it's possible he died, but my theory is that James is actually James Alexander and went by the name Alexander. Any thoughts?
My Alexander married an Emily Carver in Pickens Co., SC abt 1855 and migrated to Illinois after 1860. We can't find him in the 1870 census but his wife, Emily, is there and taking care of the kids. All but one of the kids were born in SC. My 1st theory was that he died in the war but, the youngest son, Franklin, was born in 1868. In the 1870 Census, she is in Randolph Co., IL. In 1876, she re-married in Macoupin Co., IL I am unable to locate Franklin in later census...

Well, I had no luck. The Bonnie Faye Morehead b. 1929 in OK was in the book, Henry Muirheid/Muirhead family of Virginia and Mississippi. She was not married to anyone named Emerson. There was not a James W. Morehead who married a Gladys Burton. I checked the census in 1930 in MS and there was no James or J.W. Morehead, Moorhead or Muirhead listed.

This is probably not going to be one of those easy to find, fall in your lap kinds of family histories. Take into consideration that some of the family story may be incorrect. Don't make the mistake a distant cousin of mine made. She had a handed down family story about Andrew Hair being named for his father. I told her that his father was John Hair. I had all the census data, etc. There was really no question. She refused to believe it. Later on, I found that Andrew was named for his mother's father, Andrew Moorman Dumis.

Good luck in your search.

Barbara

Jimmy Morehead had a daughter in the 1930's doesn't give us enough information to know we found the right one even if we do.

As an aside, if you get no response, try again in 2012. His grandmother Bonnie Morehead Emerson knows little to nothing about her parents as she was raised by an Aunt. She does know that her fathers name was James Morehead "Jimmy". Bonnie is now in her 70's if any one has any information I would love to hear from you.
