Morehouse family from Dearborn, Wayne, MI

Looking for James Morehouse born 1912 Pennsylvania (he would have had a different name when he was born). He was the stepson of Dyson Moorhouse. I have all the information on Dyson apart from his marriage in America. I think it was about 1921. In 1930 he lived in Dearborn, Wayne, MI and was a widower with a stepson James. Dyson was born 12 Feb 1882 in Yorkshire and died 1 Nov 1966 in Yorkshire. I would like to find out what happened to his stepson James and also the name of his wife in America.

Re: Origins of the Morehouse Name

The Moorhouse /Morehouse name is from Yorkshire, England.
MOORHOUSE
The nineteenth century produced a large number of local historians, and one of the best in the Huddersfield area was, in my view, Henry James Morehouse, whose "History of Kirkburton and Holme" contains a vast amount of valuable information on local families.
Rather surprisingly, in some ways, he does not go very deeply into the history of the Morehouses, although he does mention them from time to time. The spelling Morehouse is now very rare and has usually given way to Moorhouse, but the evidence of deed and parish registers confirms that the two are identical in origin.
The surname is prolific now and its main home is in the clothing area. However, there are two distinct families responsible for this ramification, and although it is just conceivable that at some very early date they are from one source, I have no evidence for this and indeed it seems most unlikely that it is so.
One of the families originated in lower Wharfedale in the neighbourhood of Cracoe and Rylstone, and through their connections with Bolton Priory we can trace their history well into the sixteenth century. However, most Huddersfield Moorhouses have their family origins in the Holmfirth area where the surname has been known for 650 years.
As with so many families the name first appears in the records as a result of a minor misdemeanour, and in this case Richard del Morehous of Holme was brought before the Manor Court in 1331, and fined twopence for "vert" - the illegal cutting of green wood in the lord's forest. Moorland is such a common feature in the West Riding landscape and Moorhouse such a frequent place-name that it is impossible to be sure exactly which locality had given rise to the surname. It is even quite possible that the locality was the site of only a temporary settlement.
There is, however, no doubting the association between the Moorhouse family and Holmfirth. They were taxed there in 1379, 1525, and 1545, and the last of these subsidies provides interesting information. In it the Holmfirth family name is spelt Moorhous or Morehous, all three men are called John and one of them is described as a clothier. The only other Moorhouse on the roll was William Morehous of Shepley, doubtless the ancestor of the William who in the next century acquired sole possession of a moiety of the manor and estate of Shepley.
Subsequently, the surname ramified enormously, first of all in the townships of Wooldale and Fulstone, but eventually in Huddersfield also. In the parish registers for Kirkburton, where at least seventeen spellings of Moorhouse occur, the family's history can be traced into the modern period. By Dr. George Redmonds.

Linda

Father of Abraham K Morehouse

I've kind of hit a wall in my research. I can solidly go up to Abraham K. Morehouse in my line. His son Andrew Jackson Morehouse is whom I'm descended from. I keep getting various answers as to Abraham's father. Most of what I've gotten is his father is Stephen Morehouse b.1762. Would Stephen's father be David Jr. b.1721?

Don't send me to the americanrevolution website. I've read that thoroughly 7 or 8 times. I even family treed everyone in it to see if I could come up with an answer. My best guest is the 3rd gen Johnathan son of Thomas son of Thomas who is not traced is my line of Morehouse.

Ugh

I noticed there has been many posts in many years on here, but here's a shot.....

I can be contacted directly at kevin_morehouse@me.com

Abraham is my 4G grandfather through Andrew Jackson Morehouse. I keep finding different opinions as to who Abraham father was. Some say Stephen, others say Samuel?

John H Morehouse b.1831 in Jamaica: Married Elizabeth Ahl

I am looking for the parents & siblings of John H. Morehouse, born 15 June 1831 in Jamaica. He married Elizabeth AHL in 9 July 1863. Census records state his father was born in Jamaica. His death certificate states his father was from Jamaica. Yet, a few census records state Canada/New Brunswick as birthplace. 1860, John Morehouse is living in Stillwater, MN. His daughter, Magdalena born Wisconsin, married George H. Mooers in Oregon.

So I have dozens of references of Samuel Morehouse being born around 1637.

All of them have Isabella Keeler as his mother. They have her being born in 1648. And dying in 1658.

Does anyone proofread this stuff? Who is Samuels mother?

I am in Vicksburg, MS so doing this research has proven a little difficult. I really need to make a trip up there or see if I can contact some of my Aunts who are still alive. It has been so long since I have seen them, I am sure that they won't recognize me.

Hi Jim,
Actually, I'm probably interested in any info you're willing to send me. I'm trying to update my files on the Morehouse family in general.
My own line is from CT, but collateral lines moved into other states, including NY. I haven't spent much time on the NY lines yet. I've mostly concentrated on the CT, MA and NJ lines, but continue gathering as I find time.

My line as follows:
Thomas (d. 1658 CT); Samuel (c. 1642 CT-1687 CT); Thomas (d. 1706 CT);Mary (chr. 1697) m. David Tillotson; William Tillotson (1728 CT-1809 CT); George Tillotson (1754 CT-1838 CT); George Tillotson (1803 CT-1847 at sea); Margart Tilloston (1842 CT-1902 NJ) m. Albert Moore; Jacob Moore (1879 NJ-1970 NJ); Edna Moore (1902 NJ-1966 NJ) m. William Pierce; William Pierce, Jr. (1928 NJ-1981 NJ) m. Betty Phillips; Susan Pierce (b. NJ) m. Martin Archer.

Anything you're willing to share would be appreciated. Also, if you want more than the direct line, or info on the marriages, please email me.

Thank you in advance.
Sue (Pierce) Archer
Yes, I keep looking at the two pictures and the eyes do have a similarity. But then again it could be an entirely different person. Thanks for posting that picture, my dad really loved seeing a picture of his grandfather as a child. We don't have very many old pictures like that. I am thinking a trip into Seneca Falls to the historical society my be a good idea. I was talking with my father and he remembered as a child going with his mom and dad to Gravel Rd. to visit a relative named Ruth and a man whom he thought was named Charles. This would have been in the 1950's. I have come across a couple different Ruths in the morehouse line, so I am not sure which line the Ruth he remembers would have stemmed from, and he really doesnt remember much more than what he told me, he said they went alot when he was really little but when he got older not very often.
Anyways thanks for your input!!

Re: Harriet (Van Cleef) Morehouse

It may be Harriet but.....

Hang on!

Now, I don't know where this photo came from, when it was taken, or who attributed it to Harriet Morehouse. It does look familiar - like I saw it a long time ago... perhaps Seneca Falls Historic Soceity or perhaps Betty Morehouse Zeth (son George Zeth and email sent under separate cover) may be of more help. Betty and George are our branch's historian and have all the albums.

But this is what I know. Harriet (Van Cleef) Morehouse 1817-1894 was the wife of Alanson Morehouse who was deacon of the Baptist Church on Black Brook Road near Seneca Falls. Both are barried at Fox Cemetary on Black Brook Road. Harriet would be the mother of Charles A. Morehouse our common ancestor.

If the time frame of 1865 is accruate for your photo, Harriet would have been 48 when the photo was taken and if this woman is 48 then she is very well preserved. To me, the woman in the photo looks to me to be no more than 30.

In the attached photo of our family taken about 1908, the elderly woman second from the left is Alice M. Ide our g g grandmother. Two seats over is Charles A. Morehouse our g g grandfather. Between them is your Harrison. Now, if our time frame is right Alice would have been 53 when this photo was taken. Compare the women in both photos one is about 48 one 53..boy five years took a tole on women.

Now, notice the eyes in both photos, I think they are both the same woman but that throws a wrench in the timing of yours. I think the woman in the photo is Alice M. Ide wife of Charles A. Morehouse who was born in 1855, so 1865 would be too young. But by say 1875 she would be 20 and the styles would fit.

Others in the photo are: Top row - L to R as you face the photo... George (our line), Mable, Fred, Pearl, Lena. Front row LTR: Milton, Alice, Harrison (your line), Charles, Etta.

Notice how the eyes in both photos look very similar though about 30-35 years apart... also the ages seem to fit better.

Hi Jennifer,

My name is Tammy Morehouse and my great great grandfather was also Charles A. Morehouse, his son Harrison is father to my grand father Paul L. Morehouse.
I have a picture that based on the stamps on the back date it to I am thinking 1865ish that is labeled Harriet Morehouse and the stamp on the back is from a photographer in Watkins, NY which is now Watkins Glen. Anyhow I was wondering if you had ever seen it and could verify that it is Harriet (Van Cleef) Morehouse that appears to be in both of our lines. I will try to post the image here......

[IMG]http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j124/tammymor/HarrietMoreh...]

http://s79.photobucket.com/albums/j124/tammymor/?action=view...

Sincerely,
Tammy Morehouse

Re: Nathan B. Morehouse

Dear Judy Bishop,
How wonderful to hear from a long lost cousin!!! And one who writes bearing new information for me. Thank you so much for contacting me.

I had almost given up on hearing from anyone else on this board. Having recently moved, my research records have been languishing in storage. You have now given me new inspiration to dig them out and start my active research again.

Nathan B Morehouse has been my brick wall for years. Until your email I did not even have confirmation that Nathan was buried in Tekamah Cemetery. I was starting to suspect he was buried in an unmarked grave on his farm or something like that. Nor did I know Myron Morehouse's middle name of Holly. Despite my countless hours of research I had not been able to uncover these two bits of information.

I would be thrilled to get any information you could supply on Nathan and any of his decendants. Of course the offer is extended to you also. Anything I have I am willing to share.

I have no information on Nathan's parents other than that they may have been born in NJ. I do not know the maiden name of Nathan's first wife or her place of birth. I have seen it listed both as in Vermont and in Canada.

I look forward to hearing from you. You may contact me at tsmorehouse@yahoo.com

Again, thank you! Hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Thomas S. Morehouse
