Re: New Orleans Morel

It's been two years since your posting, so you may already have this info.

According to the Oct. 27, 1975 obituary in the Times-Picayune newspaper for a Clara Morel Serpas, who died on Sat. Oct, 24, 1975, she was the wife of an Alexander Morel by first marriage.

The obituary was listed on www.genealogybank.com , but I don't have a subscription to read the full obit. You can obtain a copy of the obit by mail from the New Orleans Public Library for the cost of $2.00.

Here is the library's website which has info on ordering and the library's mailing address.
http://www.nutrias.org/~nopl/obits/obits.htm

I don't know if this if the Alexander Morel who married Clara Gnam, but here an Alexander Morel that is listed in the library's obituary index, who died in 1918. In the 1920 New Orleans, LA census, Clara is listed as a widow, with two children, Andrew and Alexander.
*****************************************
Morel, Alexander
Death date: 1918-08-15
Age: 33 years
Sex: M
Obituary citation(s):
Times-Picayune, 1918-08-18, Pg. 2 col. 8

****************************************
If you think that this is the right Alexander Morel, you can get a copy of his death certificate by mail from the Louisiana State Archives in Baton Rouge, LA for the cost of $5.00.
******************************************
Year---Age-Month-Day----Name ---Parish

1918-- 33 --8---15 MOREL, ALEXANDER--Orleans
Page: 1169 Volume: 172

*******************************************
Here is the archives website that has the form to order the death certificate from the LA state archives.
http://vitalrecords.sos.louisiana.gov/OrderRecord.aspx?vrid=...

Include the page and volume numbers when ordering the certificate.

I would love to connect with descendants of Pierre Morel and Marie Jeanne Leblanc. They were married on 26 Dec 1675, in Beauport, Quebec, according to some sources.

My Morel ancestors:

• Marthurin BELAND, b. 25 Mar 1678
• Marie Anne MOREL, b. 27 Apr 1691

• Pierre MOREL, b. 1646
• Marie Jeanne LEBLANC, b. 18 Oct 1659

• Samuel MOREL, b. Abt 1620
• Jeanne DENIS, b. Abt 1620

I hope that we can help each other discover the history of our Morel ancestors.

I am trying to discover which Morel family on the 1911 census of Ste. Anne de Beaupré in the Montmorency district of Quebéc took in paying guests from Ontario and the United States. My mother spent summers with the family when she was a child. The family owned a large farm as well as a guest house. I am particularly interested in obtaining a photograph of the farm house.

MY MORELL FTDNA Y-DNA TEST RESULTS

Hi Folks:

It has been about five months since I last introduced something regarding my family history. It all started years ago with my paper trail based on Family Records, World membership in Ancestry.com, and all the curious and kind people on many of the Surname Forums of Ancestry.com, Genforum, and the forums in Ireland, Scotland, England, and Germany that assisted in our mutual efforts.

Then I started my research with Surname History Associations like the House of Names and researched both Morell and Murrell since I had written proof that my ancestors held both surnames in England, Scotland, and Ireland. Both reports indicated that Morell and Murrell were of Anglo Norman descent and assisted the Normans at the Battle of Hastings & awarded Land in Kent & Norfolk Counties. I never came upon the name Morel or Morrell as being one of the derivations for my ancestors. I concluded that the name was only changed back and forth between Morell and Murrell and vice versa in Eastern and Northern Ireland for some reason or other.

Lastly I had FTDNA test my Y-DNA with 67 markers where they discovered I had two additional rare markers so I have 69 marker test done. I tested positive for the R1b1b2a1a (U106+). Based on the FTDNA Surname, Geographical, and Haplogroup Forums, it appears so far that I am of Frisian ancestry.

Frisia existed back between 1700 BC and 750 AD. Frisia included Northern Germany betweeen the Alps and the North Sea (Called German Sea back then), all of the Netherlands to the border of France, the Frisian Islands as they are today, and the South western coastline of Denmark.

The Frisians were the oldest of the six northern Germanic tribes (Frisians, Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Danes, and Lombards). Between 250-450 AD they migrated to Kent & Norfol Counties in Southeast England and made settlements there, where nearby counties were mostly Saxon by 750 AD. Histroy also indicated that the Frisians assisted the Normans at the Battle of Hastings and awarded land patents as if they were Normans. About 1568, many Frisians migrated Nort to Scotland for religious reasons & settled in areas such as Dumfriesshire.

Anyway out of the millions of DNA donors, Morells were few. They had a Murrell DNA Project but it was few and I did not match any of them. I did have quite a few using the name Morrison that matched from Scotland and Netherlands.

I had over 300 Exact 12 Y-DNA marker matches, several hundred with only one marker difference, nd obvously a lot more with 2 and e marker difference. As they did more markers, the numbers declines and zoomed on to Morrison and a few other names.

I challenge Morells, Murrells, Morels, and Morrells to participate in the World's largest DNA Database that is the most advanced in the world today. The prices are much cheaper then elsewhere considering it is the largest. I recoommend especially male members to have both their Y-DNA and mtDNA done to the most amount of markers, it cost more to upgrade in the future. Once your main Haplogroup is determined, for Example R1a or R1b, they will offer a deep R Subclade Test for about $80-$90,definitely order it and you will have the best accuracy and resolution to date. If they offer more than 67 marker test, do that as well. If you sign the release form you will have contact access to other matching donors as they will if they sign the waiver, and you can communicate better. They will only have your email address. Join one of the Geographical groups such as where your most recent ancestor came from other than the united states. Prices are usually 50% off and if FTDNA is offering a monthly promotion, you get that as well.

All the above has been one terrific journey of both my ancestry and learning a lot of history a long the way. I can see why some schools assign this type of project to HS Students. They will learn how to research as a scientist does backing up all their sources using most recent knowledge basis.

Bill Morell
My e-mail is john.reuther@kch-tr.sthames,nhs.uk.
My great grandmother was a monteton and came from Prussia about 1870. She married John Shaw in London, her daughter Mary was my Grandmother. I have a copy of a birth certificate of a Carl Heinrich von Monteton who was born in Frankfurt am der Oder in 1790. His mother was Anna Maria Falkenthalen and his father was a Leut von Monteton of the Von Breville Regt. It would appear that the family were Huguenots that fled France to go to Prussia. Have photo's taken in Berlin in 1860s only know Louisa, my Great Grandmother.
John Reuther
(Sue Turner is my sister in law)

According to the PRDH, Marie-Geneviève Pelletier was born 1 Dec 1722 in La Pocatière, She married Pierre Bacelet Casista 22 Feb 1745, La Pocatière and died, 24 Feb 1748, LaPocatière. Her parents were: Jean-François Pelletier (s/o Noel Pelletier and Marie-Madeleine Migneault-Chatillon) and Marie-Madeleine Morin (d/o Robert Morin and Marie-Françoise Migner-Lagace-Meunier). Jean François Pelletier and Marie-Madeleine Morin m: 18-2-1722 in La Pocatière.
Ted, you say Geneviève was born in 1735 which would have made her only 10 years old at the time of her marriage. Could you recheck your source on her date of birth.
Thanks, Joan

Saw your message and was wondering if any of your Morel's were from France. My grandfather has been a mystery to us. The 1930 census lists his birthplace as Orleans. Have not been able to find anything about him. He at one time was in New Orleans, La and we have been told he had 2 sisters. Any help here?

Precinct 7089.

Morel, Robert H. -head of household - rented property - Male/white/24 years old/married/able to read&write/born in Ohio/ father born in France and spoke French/ mother born in Germany and spoke German/Robert spoke English/he worked as a core (looks like) maker at a foundry.

Morel, Elsie/wife/female/white/age 22/married/she could read & write/born in Ohio/father born in Tennessee/mother born in Tennessee/she could speak English/no occupation listed.

Morel, Robert E./son/male/white/age 4 mos/son/born in Ohio/father born in Ohio/mother born in Ohio

Hope this helps someone.
