Nice to hear from you. There was another group of Morelands living in the Albany area at the same time, Samuel, George, James and others but I haven't been able to make a connection to them yet. I'll let you know if I find a marriage record for John and Mary.

I talked to your Uncle Lou today, I live in the next building to him and my grandmother was Cora Moreland. We are trying to figure out how we are related because my Moreland line goes from Ireland to Pennsylvania (not New York). I looked at two census reports, 1870 and 1880, and one has your John Moreland from Ireland and the other from Scotland. Another spelling for Moreland was Merlin. I saw the immigration list and he came alone in 1868 when he was 26. I guess he met Mary and married Mary right away. I can't find marriage records for them.

Pheobe Tucker Moreland (she sometimes used the nickname "Tucker") was the daughter of Joseph Moreland and Martha Turner. And yes, she was named after her grandmother, Elizabeth Phoebe Tucker who was married to her grandfather, Francis Moreland. Phoebe T.'s father died when she was about 14 in 1789 (I have her birth as 1775.) In 1793, her brother Turner had his guardianship transferred from Turner Hunt to William Ross Sadler as recorded in the Lincoln County Court House, NC. So I am guessing that her sister nancy was already married to William and Phoebe was living with her in North Carolina.
Turner Moreland was the last of four children born to Joseph Thomas Moreland and Martha Turner. Turner is my gggrandfather and I believe the Phebe T. Moreland you mention in your post was his sister. I would love to see any information you have on our family.

My research has focused on my direct line and it is fairly well documented. I will be happy to share my files with your, if your wish. My email address is billmoreland@sbcglobal.net.

My ggg-grandmother was Poccah Huntas Moreland (b.4/29/1857), dtr of Henry Hawood Moreland b. 12/18/1825 in GA and Mary Drew Sutton b. 8/5/1825 in GA. They married 12/20/1849. I have not been able to trace Henry's family. My grandmother always said her family had Indians, she thought Cherokee, but I have hit the brick wall trying to get past Henry. If anyone has any info, I would be very grateful if you'd share.

I am descended from Lucius Moreland son, Sidney Turner Moreland, who I believe was born to Lucius and his third wife (but I don't know her name) because my great grandfather was born in 1883 and his brother in 1887 and as you know, the 1890 census was destroyed by fire. I only found out about Ada Emma and the 2 daughters between her and my great grandfather a couple of years ago. I have often wondered if Emma Pistole was Ada's mother...because another Moreland descendant of Isaacs' has a copy of Lucius' Will he wrote before the Civil War that refers to another wife. I will be glad to exchange info with you.

MORELAND/GARDNER OH>MI>MO

Two undocumented stories appear in a few on-line family trees about Susan MORELAND who married Joseph GARDNER in 1827 in Wood Co. OH. One version is that Susan was a Cherokee Indian and that Joseph “brought her from Oklahoma in a salt barrel.” Another version is that Susan was “kidnapped by Indians and rescued by Joseph Gardner whom she married.” I would like to correspond with anyone who has additional information about the origin of these stories.

I have researched the 12 children of Susan MORELAND and Joseph GARDNER and have not turned up any reference by one of them to these stories. It seems to me that if such a dramatic, romantic situation had occurred, several of their children would have handed down the story to their children, and on and on.

Susan’s parents (William MORELAND and Anna BEAVER) were married in Shenandoah Co., VA, in 1795, and had two or three children there before they moved to Ohio where Susan was born. By 1830, Susan and her husband Joseph GARDNER, and her parents were all in Michigan. By 1850, Susan & Joseph and their children had moved to Greene Co., MO. Susan and Joseph were living in Ozark Co., MO, for 1860 and 1870 censuses. Susan died there in 1879 and Joseph died a year later. Both are buried in Ozark Co. MO.
My grandomther was Grace Moreland Collier from Bessemer Alabama. I believer her parents or grandparents came from Wisconsin. Her mother's maiden name was Copley. I think her dad,a Moreland, lived in Limstone Alabama which is the big foot hills of the Appalacian mountains. Very pretty place. Do not know if you have any information on her,but would be much abliged if you would share any knowledge.

Thank you !
