I've only recently signed up to ancestry.co.uk but I've been trying to track down the Moreton family for quite a few years (on & off). George Joseph Moreton has always been my sticking point largely because I can't find his marriage to Maria Burton anywhere and thus cannot be sure of his father/mother.

Your posting is really interesting. Presumably this is word of mouth from within your family? Lydia? I'd be interested if you've got any further information about George and/or Maria. It is interesting that Maria is living with someone else in the 1911 census and with two more offspring...

I'm Andrew Moreton by the way, grandson of Thomas who was the son of another Thomas (sister to Lydia) who was the son of George Joseph & Maria. Thomas snr and his brother George were lodging in the 1901 census with the Pritchett family in Salford. They both married a Pritchett daughter...

Hi Sarah,
My great grandmother, Mary Ellen Moreton was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England about 1866. She married James Wilkes in 1885 in Liverpool. They had 3 children, Anne, John and Mary. My Grandfather, John was born 1888 in Liverpool. He migrated to Australia in 1915. Mary Ellen's father's name was Thomas Moreton. Do you have any connection to this family? My family tree is called 'Wilkes Family Tree'.
Regards,
Karen Gilbert (nee Wilkes)

Hi Sarah
Thanks for looking,
When did your Thomas die, my Thomas died in 1850 in Great Budworth, I think I'll try again and start at 1772 your Thomas then work forward, unfortunately the G Budworth Parish register is not in a good condition, I think I'll try Bishops Transcripts next.... more time at Chester records office. IGI gives three possibles but they are in Stocport and Northenden and the spelling surname is Morton,Genes reunited has one possible so I'm waiting a reply their but your Thomas is in at least 10 trees! I've never had much success with Parish online records but I haven't tried Moreton so I'll give it a go. I have the MI for Great and Little Budworth so I'll check that as well as the Moreton info I have is off my Great Uncle who has been researching for years and still does some 87. If you need anything looking up on MI let me know and I also have some parish records & a lot of MI on micro fliche if you need to look something up check with me at angelamay12@hotmail.com first as I might have it
Thanks for your help
Angela

Hi Angela
In my tree I have William Moreton, wh married Rebecca Newton etc, his father is Thomas Moreton c1745. However, Thomas already has a son Thomas born c1772 Great Budworth, he marries Mary Whitney as far as I know.

If your Thomas is of Great Budworth, he can't be far off though! Will keep looking and keep my eyes open.

Your best bet is finding his baptism I guess as it would name his father, the advice I've been given is to search parishes within a 20 mile radius of where you think the person was born - which can be an awful lot!

Its a difficult one, very frustrating when someones missing!

Have you looked at the cheshire parish register project (google this), its very good and has all the info rather than a selection as on family search.

Hello Alastair
Nice to hear from you.
I dont think I have any connections to Staffordshire in my tree that I can think of off the top of my head. Going to 1600's etc my Moretons all stem from Cheshire, many from the Great Budworth area. Lots of Thomas's and Samuels though but n Matthias, have a look at my tree though and see if we have any matches,
Sarah

My research has mainly revealed connections back to Staffordshire, but would be interested if there were any links to Cheshire/Lancashire. A common theme throughout is the unusual name of Matthias (and sometimes with Matthew) where often one of the sons (particularly the first boy) had that name. Have you come across any Matthias Moreton (or Morton as it was sometimes spelt if you go back to the 1700s) in your research?
Alastair Moreton

I am intrigued by his first name and would like to find out where he got it. His fathers name was John Moreton and mother Elizabeth Brundret. We think his Grandfathers name was also John.

I have found another Taylor Moreton b c1767 Lapley Staffs. But am unable to find his christening on the IGI . I am thinking he was the son of Mathius Moreton and Ann Taylor.

Could John be the brother of Taylor(1767) and his son called his son Taylor also. I dont know.

I have sent a message to a Carolkilly thru ancestry just recently re this family.
