He was born in Alabama. His father was William Hillsman Mormon who married Melissa Jane Rickels. Hillsman was in the civil war, was taken prisioner during the Battle of Chicamauqua in Tn. Was in Prisoner of war camp in Illinois until the end of the war. Was wounded with scrapnel wounds and
filed for his pension of $25.00 per month after the war. James Franklin, Hillsman and Jesse all joined the Confederacy together into the 15th division. There is a lot of information that I have but I can't connect one generation to have it all the way back. That is the name of James Mormon's father. That one generation I am not sure of.
Lena, I knew we were related but not how. I see your g/g/g/
grandfather and grandmother are the same as mine. Do you happen to know who was the father of James Mormon that married
Malinda West? That is where I am stuck. Can't find this information anywhere. Dee Lochala
Look in Talapoosa County, Ms. Also look in Collins, Arkansas.
Grandfather owned a store there and he and my dad and I assume
homer and jim tom were there at that time. I did find out that there was a child that did not live. Somehow I think the name
is Phaeoe but I'm not sure of that. He was married to Mattie
Courtney. As far as I know Grandfather did not have any brothers or sisters. He had a "Cousin Hard". I know he called
him "Cudin Hard". He is buried at Troy, the place that I took
you the day we traveled over there. I think his name was Hardy Mormon. Collins, Ark. I believe is in Desha County but also look in Drew County. Dan Mormon the last time I talked
to him remembered a lot about our Grandfather. All I can remember vividly is he was terribly independent lived with a Ms. Greene and visited us mostly when he was sick. He poured his coffee into the saucer and blew on it to cool it.
When he drank it he made a slurping sound and that made the
hairs on the back of my neck stand up. But remember I was a
very young girl with not much tolerance. While you are on
this site, look at the listings by Don about our great great
great grandmother who was indian by the name of Spitlog.

Good Morning, It is always a special day to hear from another of my relatives. I met Sue Lindermann a few years ago and we took the circuit to Monticello. Sue looked the Swedish Ones in our family tree. Some of my other cousins favor her a lot. I would be delighted to hear from you. I have the email address of Tori Hansen and send her information once in a while. I am in contact with several of the younger set of Mormon's which would be your second cousins. Some are Dumah's brother, Frank
Mormon's children. Some of my first cousins I am in correspondence with and would love to put you in contact with them. Our numbers a dwindling and I am 72 years old so would love to give you the information that I have. My email is lochala@cswnet.com. With Love Dee

Hi Debbie,

I have been out of the loop on this for quite a while, but would love to hear from you. DeeMarris Lochala is my father's cousin. My father is Dan Mormon from Arkansas. Get in touch if you can? Email is lisatexark at netscape dot net. Would love to hear from you. You have incredibly detailed information and it's fascinating. I'm particularly interested in ethnicity in the family, as it seems quite diverse. Any information there?

Best regards,
Lisa Mormon lisatexark at netscape dot net

Wister Mormon

My grandparents were James Wister and Minnie Jones MORMON. They lived across the highway from Tom Carnes. Their children are Jessie, Martha, Grace, John and Jean. Jean is my mother.
I remember Tom and his sister. I do not know the problems between the families. I do know my grandparents had family reunions that people from Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas attened each year. My grandfather died in 1960 at the age of 91. So, I gather the reunions stopped around then. They have a Mormon reunion the Saturday before Labor Day at Duckhill, Mississippi. I had attended it twice. Several of the people that I knew have died. I had been in touch with several people who have Mormon family connections. I would like to meet some of these people. Maybe when I retire that will be possible.

There are several people that I know in Hamburg who decend from William Edgar Mormon. They are from his daughter Angela Mormon who married Thad Bates.

I have wondered why my grandfather never mentioned his uncles that are buried in the Troy Cemetery? This is only about 10 miles from my grandparents' home.

I found a book in the Winona, Mississippi, library where James C., William, Jesse, and Hillsman Mormon were in the Civil War. They were all sons of James and Millie Mormon.

Mary Elizabeth Mormon married Harmon Sellars. Sylica Jane Mormon, who married W. W. Strickland, is buried in Troy cem. also. I understand W. W.Strickland met the Mormon brothers in the war and brought him home to meet their sister.

I have found no information on James C. Mormon. I found Martha, Samantha, Wilson A.mentioned in the 1880 census for MS. Wilson A is age 10, the same age as my grandfather, Wister. I have never heard this name mentioned. I do know that my grandfather had a double-first cousin, Ada Atkerson. Grandpa said they were rocked in the same cradle. Ada married J. J. Salley.

That's about it.

I'd love to know more, who their parents were, their ancestry, siblings, etc. I've emailed you. Do you have your genealogy on-line?

Hoping to hear from you soon. Thanks so much for replying!
I'm glad to hear from one of my Mormon relatives. Mary Virginia Mormon Carnes was my g grandmother on my mother's side of the family. I never knew her because she passed away two years before I was born. I have some of her letters written to my grandmother in her later years and they are generally sad letters describing the hard times and the monotony of farm life in those days. She died in Crossett where she was living with one of her children.

Which of her brothers was your grandfather? Where did he live, I assume it was in Ashley Co.? I have none of the birth and death dates of Mary's brothers and sisters, do you? I do have the names of all the spouses of the sisters, but none of the spouses of the brothers. Did Mary's father, William Edgar Mormon, serve in the Civil War? I can't find
any record.

I would appreciate any additional comments on the Mormon line.

Thanks,

Don Van Meter
Nordonvan@aol.com

Lena or Diane, I would like to compare our information. We are researching the same line but there seems to be a conflict in the father of James Mormon. I would really like to find something that would confirm James Mormon's father and mother. I know that this family moved seemingly with the West's and the Stricklands and married into those families.
What is your source for the wife of James Mormon. How did the Poe get into the name. Was this a second marriage or what? I think that the possibilities are either Thomas or William because we find them both in the Georgia census in close proximity with the Poe's and the West's. Please let me know if you have anything further on this.

Diane, I would like to contact you. We have common ancestors and there are some other of our distant relatives that are also researching the Mormon line. My great/great/great grandfather was James Mormon who married Millie West. My great/great grandfather was William Hillsman Mormon who married Jane Rickells. My great grandfather was James Franklin Mormon who married Mattie Courtney. You have posted information on the West message board that is pertinent to my great/great grandfather Hillsman Mormon. Would you please e mail me. Thanks Dee Mormon Lochala lochala@cswnet.com
