Comes from the town of Mortlake on the Surrey bank of the Thames.

Wills in Cambridgeshire trace back to a John Mortlock in Pampisford Cambs living ante 1475.

No connection with Scotland.

Mortlocks in Alpheton, Suffolk

My 3x gt-grandmother was Susan(Susannah) Mortlock, married William Whiting on Christmas Day 1814 in Alpheton, Suffolk which is less than 10 miles from Clare. I haven't found her baptism which would have been approx 1797-1801 - does anyone please have any info to help - thanks.

Yes, I have a connection he was my Great x 3 grandfather.He married Mary Ann Atterton in 1828 and he was a clock and watchmaker. The shop is still in market hill but is now a sandwich bar! They lived in Malting Lane.

A Mortlock Family Tree in my possession states that family originally came from Scotland in the Reign of James 1st [1605-1627] and settled in the Essex/Cambridgeshire area.

HI ELaine: A friend of mine found your posting on Ancestry regarding Frances Mortlock. I am doing some minor research into the family history of my godmother and we believe that William Sale was her great-grandfather. I had found Frances in a 1901 census record but she is listed there as having been born in Durham - that could be a spelling error from Denham.
My godmother is now 93 and has dementia so the information I am getting from her is very vague, but we do know that Frances was married 3 times. Her second husband was a man by the name of George Murrells of Homerton which is in the borough of Hackney London, where he ran a political club. Her 3rd husband was a Mr. Green from Southend on Sea and he was a butcher. The children that we know about from the first marriage to William Sale were Alice, born in 1898, Lillian Lucy Sale born in 1899 and there was at least one son - George. I would love to hear from you to confirm that these are the same names that are in your family tree. I would also be happy to fill in more recent details if I can. My 2x great grandmother was born in Freckenham in 1822 (Mildenhall area) and their family moved to Clerkenwell, London prior to 1841 where she met my 2x great grandfather Daniel George Wallis (or Wallace per 1841 census). She died in 1899. Any relation?

I got your posting about John Mortlock and Francis Frost. I show a son John Mortlock of Sawston, 1695 to 1758 and marrried to Alice (possibly Garner). They had another son, Thomas who married Sarah Kidman. Then Simon Married to Elizabeth Barker in 1757 and then Thomas married to Elizabeth Turner. That's where your line splits and is apparentlly from their daughter Elizabeth and I come down from their son Thomas Jr. whho married Elizabeth Gladwyn and they had my GGGrandfather Geoerge as well as Lucy and Charles Gladwyn Mortlock. George married Caroline Chatham, my Great Grandfather Edwin and grandfather George, my father Donald and then my brother and I. If you would like more fill in on names and dates on my side let me know. I am tracking some of these side relationships and adding them to my tree so any further information would be appreciated. Can you go back further than John Mortlock and Frances Frost. I show Frances father as Francis (note the spelling, "is" is male and "es" is female according to a genealegist I talked to recently, don't know if that is true or not.)Francis (the father) was Born Nov 1644 and died 1721. His father was John Frost. Frances mother was Mary Ballard and she and Francis were married 10/17/1667. I would like to go back further in the Mortlock side if we can. I just noticed your posting of 2003 so this is a little bit late and may not reach you but I am decended from John Mortlock and Francis Frost through their son John of Sawston and his wife Alice. Their son was Simon, then Thomas, this another Thomas, then my great great grandfather George mortlock, My great Grandfather edwin and grandfather George, my father Donald and then my brother Peter and myself, Keith. I noted a post by you way back in 2006 regarding the Mortlock family. It appears that we share a line. I descend through son John, then Simon, then Thomas, then Elizabeth who married John Hankin Bentley, then Frederic Bentley, then Harry George Bentley, then Florence Violet Bentley who married Oliver Daniel King and moved to Australia at the end of WW1, then Ernest Albert King (my grandfather)
I have only fairly recently started to get a handle on this line of my family and any information that you may be able to share would be most appreciated.

Does anyone out there have any knowledge of Edward's(1845) father, who married a lady called "Philladelphia" (b.1808) which is an unusual name,to say the least. Edward(my G-G Grandfather )also had a brother Charles, both born at Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

i don't know if my mortlocks were from suffolk, but they emmigrated to new Zealand sometime in the mid 1800's, my grandfather was Wilfred LIonel Mortlock and his father had two brothers that he lost contact with when they emmigrated possibly one to Aussie one to SA but no body knows?!

We believe that he was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada and also died at Kingston. His father was George Henry Mortlock (husband of Mary Loretta Davis, born Gananoque, Ontario, Canada) who we believe was born in England and died in Kingston, Ontario. We live in Coventry !! My husband's father was Albert Mortlock, and his grandfather was Thompson Mortlock, who came from Swavesey in Cambridgeshire in 1913. I know Thompson had brothers called James, John and Ebenezer. Do you think there is any connection? there are very few Mortlocks in Coventry. Where do you live?

John and Francis were my GGGGGGG GP's (that's 7 greats.
Their son John, his son Simon, then Thomas and Thomas jr. and then to my GG Gp's George Mortlock and Caroline Chatham whose son Edwin Mortlock was my Great Grand father. Next question: Can you go back beyond John?

Noticed your replies to Kevin. I am just beginning to research my family tree. My Great Grandmother was Christina Mortlock, born in Scotland and raised in London by two aunts after her mother died. She married William John Morse, had at least five children, and died in 1936. She is buried in West Ham Cemetary. Any connection that you know of?

On my mothers side there are Mortlocks who lived in the Downham Market area of West Norfolk (Hilgay) and near Thetford (Mundford). There is a marriage with a Frost too in 1819 at Poslingford, Suffolk - John Motlock and Alice Frost.
Johns father was William bap 1769 and his father also William who married Sarah.

I have just discovered an Ambrose Mortlock born about 1858 In Mildenhall, Suffolk. Ambrose's parents were Titus and Ellen.HIs brothers were William and Walter.
Ambrose married an Emma Graham in 1879 and they were living in St Pancras, London in 1881. Emma and Ambrose had the following children: Lillian, Ellen, Florence, and Elizabeth. Ambrose died at age 32 in St Pancras, London.

I saw a reply to Kevin Mortlock that you were related to the Mortlocks from Cambridgeshire and sussex. I am also apparently a decendant of Mortlocks from that area. Would be interested in whatever you have. My G G Grandfather was George Mortlock and his wife was Caroline Chatham. According to the marriage certificate his father was Thomas. This was in 1840 in Wheathill. George was from Hopoton Wafers? and Caroline was from Longhton or Loughton. I can't read the name of the county but looks like Salop or Talop(f?). If you are related to the Cambridge branch are you aware of the book " Cambridge to Botany Bay" by A.E.Clark-Kennedy? It's about the bank and the scandal involving John Mortlock son of Frederick Cheetham Mortlock. Let me knowyour e-mail address.
