Ella Gray Morton’s obituary was published on Wednesday, 14 July 1915, on page 6 of the Portsmouth Daily Times.

“Mrs. Ella Gray-Morton, aged 43 years, wife of Dudley W. Morton, a well-known grocer of McCall, Ky., died Wednesday afternoon from the effects of a surgical operation for the removal of gall-stones that she underwent at Hempstead hospital the middle of February. Mrs. Morton had been ill since January. Besides her husband, who formerly operated the Biggs house bar, she leaves the following children: Fannie Belle Morton, Earl, Gertrude, Claude, the Times agent at McCall, Gladys and Lavenia. Mrs. Morton’s untimely death will cause profound sorrow among a wide circle of friends. She was a member of the Methodist church of Fullerton. No time has yet been fixed for the funeral, but the services will be conducted by Rev. Haggard Fullerton, and burial will be at Siloam, Ky.”
Lisa,

Sorry for my delay in responding. Had baby #3 on the 20th of Feb. Been kinda busy.

In regards to your question, I found the information via a hint here on Ancestry.com. The title of the document is "Alabama, Deaths and Burials Index, 1881-1974
about Dallas Morton". So it could very well be human error.

You say the line is documented from Bible records. Is this information online somewhere that I might access it?

Thank you so much for the clarification.
Sincerely Donna

Hi Cousin! How ironic, I had been looking at my Zopher A. Davis information yesterday. I have several newsclippings about your Zopher Davis line from Eugene and Portland. I was also putting paperwork with Dorothy Barclay info into my files yesterday! I have photo's of the Zopher Davis home in Eugene and was in contact with the gal that was putting the home on the historical registry. The last time I checked the house was a knitting store. I also have newsclippings on Amelia's father's death and her sister. I have your Zopher's grandfather's will listing your Zopher's father, brothers and sister. Would you like a copy of that?
My dad's grandfather was also Zopher Allen Davis from Waubay,SD. He told dad that he had great uncle's (Drs.) that had moved to Oregon and that is how I started my search for them from the will and the location of Iowa and Oregon. So glad to hear from you! You can also email me at baxter@venturecomm.net if you don't want to post on the boards. You could do both in case my email filter kicks your email out. Hope to hear from you soon.
Penny

Hi Janet,

I have two baptisms for name variants of Phillis Murton in the approximate date range for which you're looking:

1. Parish of Chatton: PHILICE	MORTON	Baptism	23/05/1750	Daughter of RICHARD MORTON of CHATTON

This individual was buried a year later.

2. Parish of EMBLETON: PHILLIS	MORTON	Baptism	15/02/1747	WILLIAM MORTON/JANE Phillis Morton, d. of William Morton and his wife Jane, of Dunston

No 2 looks like a good match as Embleton is only 6 or 7 miles from Alnwick.

I have a marriage for William and Jane:

Parish of Bamburgh: WILLIAM	MORTON	Marriage	16/01/1743	JANE DUN	William Morton of Woodhorn to Jane Dun, p[arish] of Beadnell

I also have a potential burial for Jane:

Parish of Beadnell: JANE	MORTON	Burial	19/10/1801	WILLIAM MORTON Jane Morton of Beadnel, widow of the late William Morton, hind, died 17/10/1801, age 88

If this is her then it would mean that Phillice would have been born when she was 34 which might explain why I can't find any more baptisms, perhaps Jane was too old!

I hope this is useful for you.

Regards,

Andrew
Arsenic poisoning in MORTON/HARPER home 1859

I am researching Richard HARPER who was married to Rebecca MORTON descendent of John MORTON, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

The Morton family is well-documented however Richard HARPER is not. If anyone in Delaware county is able to access newspaper articles that would shed more light on this one or who has information on Richard HARPER, it would be very much appreciated. Every MORTON genealogy that I've found does not have any information on her husband Richard's ancestors.

Name: Richard Harper
Sex: M
Note:
September 23, 1859
DELAWARE COUNTY REPUBLICAN (newspaper)

DEATH FROM POISON. - Coroner Long held at inquest, on Monday
evening last, at the house of Richard Harper, in Springfield, on the body of a young woman named McCully, who resided, until within a few days prior to her death, with her parents, in the Twenty fourth Ward, Philadelphia. The deceased was about nineteen years of age, and was enciente at the time of her death. She was on a visit to the house of Mr. Harper. On Monday, Mr. H. and his wife left home for Chester, and during their absence, deceased took arsenic, and was dead when they returned. - Dr. Allen, of this Borough, was present at the inquest, and, on making a post mortem examination of the body, the effects of the deadly drug were plainly visible. The jury returned a verdict that the deceased came to her death from poison administered by her own hands.

DNA testing can be a help to locate someone with keys to your roadblocks. If you find a close match with someone whose information goes back before yours it can unlock whole new avenues of research. Actually it is another potentially good tool in genealogy research. Like the internet it has added some great stuff and a some you have to wade through to uncover the truth.

As I wrote in my reply to your membership request, my ggggrandfather Josiah Morton, was listed in his son's(John Alexander Morton) civil war record as a native of NC. He was born, according to census records in approximately 1799. John Alexander was born in Wilson County TN in 1829. There is a Josiah Morton in Bedford County TN in 1930 next door to a Wiley Johnson (Josiah's wife was Nancy Johnson) the two families are near each other in Henderson County TN in 1940. John had a son named Marshall Josiah who could have been named for a relative. There are several Morton families with Marshall and Josiah as a repeated names in their line.
I found (I think, it has been a while) 6 Morton families in NC in the 1800 census that had a male child who would have been Josiah's age but have yet to connect them to any documented evidence.

As of now, I am not really sure where in VA our Morton's originated. Orange Co, NC is where documents first appear. They migrate on to Anderson/Pendleton, SC and then on to North Alabama (mainly in Blount, St Clair, Marshall and Etowah Counties). We do have a Brooks connection as they migrated into Blount County, AL.

I know we are related. I am descended through James's grandson Ashbel Morton. My question is: I keep seeing on ancestry that James was the son of John Morton (Plymouth, Mass) and that doesn't work with the Ireland birthplace I have for James, and they are adding a new wife also. The whole thing is a bit confusing...Have you encountered anything on this? I can't find my citation info. for where I 1st got the Irish birth. Think I lost when my old computer crashed years ago. Do you remember where you got your info.?

Joseph's first wifes name was actually Cora Well's. She is buried in Hickory Grove cemetery with her parents. Morrisville Polk County Missouri. I know that it looks and is Dora in the Missouri Marriage records but on the stone it is Cora. You can find it I believe on Find A Grave and the census info. I met Joseph's Granddaughter for the first time last year at the cemetery and was showing her my GreatGrandfathers burial site and we were walking through the cemetery we both were chatting and stopped at the same time we got goose bumps and mentioned it to each other when we saw the stone we were standing in front of said Cora Morton. It was just meant to be, us to find his first wife. Blessings, Debbie Morton Allen

Well, if alive he would be almost 100 years old. If dead he had been in the military try the Veterans Administation and look for military history on Ancestry, also check the Social Security Death Index. SSDI on Ancestry, since he live in Oklahoma that may be where he first applied for a SSDI number and that will be one way to weedle people out. Good luck to you and your family. It's sad that in those days they didn't have help for so many of our Vet's. I attend a WWII Rainbow meeting with my Dad, they thanked my husbands Vietnam era for making PTSD known and recognized as a disability. These were the men that went to Dachau. It is just heartbreaking to think of what they had to see and do. Again good luck, from one Morton to another. Blessings
