Moscrops of Newcastle-upon-Tyne or York

My great-aunt Sarah Alvinzar "Sally" Anderson, was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, in either 1875 or 1876, was a grocer's assistant in 1901, and married John "Jack" Moscrop. During the 1960s she lived at 76 Jute Road, Carr Estate, Acomb, York. At the end of her life, she was living at the Addiston Home, Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Jack and Sally had two children, John Alexander Moscrop and Nancy Moscrop. John Alexander may have had a daughter named Anne, married in York in 1957. I would love to locate descendants of Sally and Jack's marriage. I can provide extensive information on Sally's family.

Actually the school is in Burnaby which is a suburb to Vancouver. From the air, it looks like its part of Vancouver. If you go to the school website, you might still be able to find the history of the Moscrops that came here that I gave them. I actually phoned a teacher that worked there and asked him if he was interested in the amazing Moscrop history. There is a road called Moscrop too...and the school is on it. The majority of it is in Burnaby but it goes over for a short block or two into Vancouver.

In BC there were two branches of Moscrops that came to BC. Ones roots are from the Lancashire area and the others are from the Cumberland area.

And in the 30's some of the kids migrated to the States.

Where do you live? Please email me mgraham@wsi.ca
Thanks

Marlene
I recently returned from Salt Lake after doing research. I do believe that John and Sarah were my grandmother's parents possibly adopted parents. Her name was Mary. She married Elijah Hendrickson when she was 23. We believe that something happened to him between 1887 and 1900 because she is married to John VanGelder at that point with her four children by Elijah Hendrickson. I have been researching this and am not able to find him. if you happen to have any information I would greatly appreciate this.

OMGawd OMGawd Andrea...where are you? Are you in Vancouver?? Email me or please call me. I have so much to tell you!!

If you look up the School, I sent them a history of the Moscrops as I knew it..and they had it posted on thier school site. No one knew where the school got their name and I didn't want it to be lost over time...so now the students will know something of the schools beginings.

Also the Master is still in dock (spring to fall) and you can actually go on a tour of it. When I talked about my connection to it ..via a cousin who asked me to research it..boy did that guy come out with lots of information..and he sold me a Master's plate that I sent out quickly to England. I can't wait to hear from you.

Marlene

mgraham@wsi.ca
604-591-3257

Hello,

Arthur Moscrop was my great grandmother's uncle(Edith Moscrop). He was her father's brother. The Vancouver Maratime Museum gave an item relating to The Master to my family and one of my uncles has it (I will have to ask him about it). Unortunately my grandmother (Edith's daughter) passed away a few years ago so I do not have a lot of information on Arthur. My son is doing a project in school on The St. Roch and has so many questions and is very excited to be related to Arthur Moscrop. My grandmother also told me the story of the school in Burnaby named after a Moscrop family member.

Andrea

John Moscrop and Jane Mitchinson were my 5-great grandparents -- their son John married Mary Mason and their daughter Jane Moscrop (1819 - 1885) married John Beaty of Arthuret(1817 to after 1901) and they moved to Lanchester, Durham. These are Stapleton/Kirklinton/Brampton families, in the area north and east of Longtown.

Beckermet is way the other side of the country, on the coast near Whitehaven. There were a large number of Moscrops and Mossops in the area. A lot of researchers are tracing the Beckermet families, so you can find them using Google.

The Moscrops and Mitchinsons in that area really stuck together. If you go back one more generation you will find John Moscrop married Jane Mitchinson (dob:1770) William Mitchinson (B:1772) married John's sister, Deborah (they had 2 kids at Stapleton..John and Mary, I think). James Mitchinson (B:1781) married John's another one of John Moscrop's sisters, Mary Moscrop. and My great great great great grandfather, Francis Mitchinson (B:1767) married Elizabeth Moscrop (they had 12 kids). By the way, all the Mitchinsons I just mentioned were all brothers of the Jane Mitchinson I just mentioned.
Check the records for Stapleton and Irthington, and maybe even over in Kirkington. They're all at Castle Carlisle.

Hi Derek
Richard Moscrop(b.1861) was born to Thomas Moscrop (b.1828) and Jane Jaycock - there is an interesting tale about Thomas and his bigamous marriages which you may or not be aware of. Thomas' parents were a John Moscrop and Mary Atherton - John was very likely the brother of my husband's gx6g/father. I have recently been swapping information with another descendant of Richard(1861). If you want to email me directly I would be glad to exchange information and put you in touch with the other researcher. His father Thomas died in 1869 but the whereabouts of mother Jane and siblings Thomas, Jane and Fanny are unknown. I believe Richard entered a 'National School' around 1870 at the age of 10 or before.

I believe tht Mary E Moscrip was my father's grandmother. Her father's name was John and mother was sarah. John 39, Sarah 34, Mary 13, born in 1857, William 10 and Charles 2 living in Allegany, Cattaraugus,NY in the 1870 census. Mary married an Eligah Hendrickson I believe and is listed in the 1880 census with one child and her two brothers William and Frank living in Eldred, Pen. she was 23 at that time. I have found the name spelled Moscrip and Moscript. I am unable to locate sarah's maiden name. My father thought that Mary was a full blooded indian, but we can not confirm that. I believe that she was in the 1869 census at the age of 3 living n Allegany this is listed in the 1860 census as Mary E. Mserisst. Any help you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Walter Many thanks for getting in touch and good to hear from you. It was unfortunate that Ethel had a stroke before I was in touch with her and I never really managed to tie up all the loose connections. I guess that your grand father was Thomas Moscrop although I only recorded that he had one son John T Moscrop who I believe died in Nevada in 1997. I have sent my tree to your registered email address but please let me know if it doesn't get through. We are related to your great grand father Thomas' brother Robert.

I look forward to hearing more from you.

Best regards

Chris

Hello Chris -

My name is Walter Thomas Mosscrop; my father, Robert Walter Mosscrop, was Ethel's cousin. He passed away in 2005, and we assume that his brother (John T. Mosscrop) has also passed away.

I have a daughter, Julia Lorraine Mosscrop, and a granddaughter, Chloe Renee Mosscrop.

I haven't had the time yet to look through all of the recent Mosscrop postings--if you have some sort of tree already prepared I would be very interested in it!

Thanks,

Walter

Back of the Bank Farm

Does anyone have any details about this farm in Little Bolton, Lancashire, England?

The earliest Moscrop that I have in my tree is John Moscrop who was born around 1715 and died in 1800, in Bolton, Lancs.
He was a farmer of the above named farm. I have not yet found who his father was but it may have been Thomas Moscrop as John's second son was named Thomas (the first being named John). The name Thomas is carried through the following generations.
Another piece of the jigsaw is the following:

"after that (the battle of Flodden Field) they (Moscrops)left their native soil (in Northumberland), and arrived at Bolton; they became tenants of a farm
at Back-i'-th-Bank. The two brothers who came were
Archibald and Donald; and the two sisters Agatha
and Beatrice. They also intermarried with the very
ancient family of Norris, who erected Hall-i'-the-Wood. In
1511, they bore a coat of arms, according to
Douglas".
The Moscrops lived in this farm until the late 1880s, over 300 years. There are about 200 years to fill in!

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to think about this.

Pauline
Hi. My name is Jolene and I am new to this genealogy thing. My great grandparents are Samuel Mosscrop and Gertrude Cody. I have successfully traced Samuel's lineage back to grandfather Thomas D. Mosscrop (married to Elizabeth) born approximately 1812 in England. If anyone has any information I would greatly appreciate it! jlescio@yahoo.com

I am researching the Moscrop family tree and am related to those originating from Bolton, Blackrod, Adlington, Coppull, Heath Charnock in the 1800's that latterly ended up in Vancouver, British Columbia and parts of the USA. I note that a lot of work on my family has been done by Ethel Juriloff and would like to be able to contact her but her last email address is no longer working. Any assistance would be appreciated on tracking Ethel or any other relatives.

Regards

Chris Lloyd

Moscript family Cattaraugus County/New York

Looking for descendants of John W. Moscript and Sarah Ann Nuttall, originally from Delaware County, New York, moved to Cattaraugus County by 1860. Any information would be appreciated. I believe I am descended from daughter Mary E. Moscript, born about 1857, married unknown OAKS, two children, Amanda OAKS born abt 1877, and Willis Truman OAKS, born sept 1879. These children and their mother are listed on the 1880 census in Forest County, PA, and there is no husband though Mary is shown as Married, not widowed. From what I understand, the husband died and the two children were given up for adoption. Amanda was renamed Jenny and put with a family, and my great-grandfather Willis was adopted by Jerry and Susan Haak, and renamed Albert Ernest Haak. Greatful for any info on Mary Moscript or Mr. Oaks.

Most of my Moscrops are from Cumberland. The only group I have are from Darlington. These being William Moscrop (b1858), Edward (b1863), Jane (b1866) and Deborah (b1866). These are the chidren of John Moscrop (b1821) and a Margaret ??) The only other links to Durham is via the Batey family.
