Descendants of Sir William & Susanna Moseley of Norfolk, Virginia ... hope this information helps ...

The volumes below show the following descent:
--William and Susanna (Burnet Blackmore) Moseley
--Son Arthur married (1) Sarah Hancock (daughter of Simon & Sarah (Guye) Hancock, sister of Robert Hancock, below), (2) Ann HargraveHargrove
--Son Arthur married Sarah Hancock (daughter of Robert Hancock and Johan Ligon Hancock and Arthur's first cousin)
--Robert Ligon Moseley married Sarah Rachel Taylor (daughter of Thomas Taylor; she married (2) Jean Peter Bondurant

The information below comes from The Descendants of William Moseley 1605/1606 of Norfolk, Va.," compiled by Lelia Eldridge D'Aiutolo, Warren L. Forsythe, William S. Hubard, and Mary Carolyn Mitton; in 2000. Available for $30.00 postpaid from Warren Forsythe, Box 1299, Ellensburg, WA 98926 (as long as they last).
For updated more Moseley information and updates/corrections to information in the aforementioned volumes, go to http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com, then search for the database "moseley1" (do not type quotes) or go to http://www.gendex.com/users/forsythe/.

From volume 1, pages xxxv-xxxvi (includes typos): "Moriarty etc. showed that Wm. might possibly be the son William of Richard and Katherine (Smyth) Moseley baptized 17 Dec 1606 in the Parish of St. Margaret's-Westminster, Middlesex (now western London)--but that our William definitely was NOT the William, son of Wm & Dorothy (Helmes) Moseley, baptized 10 Dec 1606/8 in Carburton, Nottinghamshire, as that son William is buried (this data on secondary source LDS film #0001043, but the identity of the 1643 burial is not exact there. We're relying on the ca. 1950 era publications in genealogical journals, of G. A. Moriarity and Robt B. Moseley, who studied that.) there 4 Apr 1643 in Worksop Cemetery near Carburton, shortly after his father Wm was buried there 30 Oct 1642 and his mother Dorothy 15 aug 1633. Nevertheless William fo Va.'s father's family may have originated from the English Midlands. By the year 1600 the name Moseley was (independent origins?) widely distributed in Lancashire, Yorkshire etc. And so probably some of the emigrants to North America named Moseley bore only remote, if any, kinship to each other."

The following three sources of information came to me directly from Leila D'Aiutolo, co-author of the abovementioned volumes:

(1) Page 114, 116, 131, 198 of Thomas Byrd Moseley, Jr. (Clifton, Texas, privately printed 1993); "William Moseley of Lower Norfolk", by G. Andrews Moriarty, from Vol. 62 (1954) 346-347.
St. Margaret's Westminster Register:
1599 July 1 married Richard Moseley and Ellen Ashley.
1600 March 13 baptized George, son of Richard Moseley.
1602 Jan. 20 baptized William son of Richard Moseley.
1604 Jan. 17 baptized Christian daughter of Richard Moseley.
1604 Aug. 9 buried Ellen Moseley.
1604 Sept. 24 married Richard Moseley and Katherine Smyth.
1605 July 27 baptized Henry son of Richard Moseley.
1606 Dec. 17 baptized William son of Richard Moseley.
1606 April 7 buried Christian Moseley.
1620/1 Jan. 31 buried Richard Moseley.
1623 Nov. 21 buried John Moseley.
1634 Dec. 9 married Richard Cole and Elinor Moseley.
1636 Aug. 29 buried William Moseley.
1638 May 24 buried Katherine Moseley.
1640 May 20 buried William Moseley and child.
1644 Oct. 25 buried John Moseley.
1648 Nov. 11 married William Moseley and Elizabeth Bush.
1655 June 23 buried James Moseley.
1656 April 20 baptized Henry and John sons of John and Winifred Moseley.
1659 Aug. 18 baptized Anne daughter of John and Winifred Moseley.
1659 Aug. 18 baptized Anne daughter of John and Winifred Moseley.
(The name of Moseley occurs in the Register as early as 1544.)

(2) From "A Moseley Genealogy", Thomas B. Moseley, 1985, beginning on page 13.
"Susanna, daughter of Ralph Burnet, citizen and draper of london, who lived in the parish of St. Benet Fink, was baptized there on 7th December, 1605. She married first, Arthur Blackmore and had by him an only child, a daughter named Susanna. Arthur Blackmore died between 01 MAY 1632 and 30 APR 1633, and his widow married very soon after, certainly before 22 DEC 1634, William Moseley, also an English Merchant Adventurer, living in Delft. On the latter date, as husband of Susanna, he was sued by the widow of Cornelius Michielsz van Ring for the rent of a house in Delft, rented by her late husband Arthur Blackmore from 01 MAY 1632 to 30 APR 1633, and judgment was entered for the plaintiff. William Moseley later removed to Rotterdam, where he was Steward (Schftmeister) of the English House on 13 AUG 1643."

(3) Another source cites her baptismal date as 7 DEC 1595.
By G. ANDREWS MORIARTY*
Susanna, daughter of Ralph Burnet, citizen and draper of London, who lived in the parish of St. Benet Fink, was baptized there on 7 Dec., 1695. She married first, Arthur Blackmore and had by him an only child, a daughter named Susanna.

Arthur Blackmore died between May, 1632, and 30 April, 1633, and his widow married very soon after, certainly before 22 December, 1634, William Moseley, also an English Merchant Adventurer, living in Delft. On the latter date, as husband of Susanna, he was sued by the widow of Cornelius Michielsz van Ring for the rent of a house in Delft, rented by her late husband Arthur Blackmore from 1 May, 1632-30 April, 1633, and judgment was entered for the plaintiff. William Moseley later removed to Rotterdam, where he was Steward (Schaftmeester) of the English House on 13 August, 1643. Late in July or early in August, 1649, he emigrated to Virginia and settled at Lower Norfolk, where he appears on 30 November, 1649. His will of 29 June, 1655, was recorded 15 August, 1655 (cf. McIntosh, Lower Norfolk Wills, p. 16). William and Susanna Moseley had issue William and Arthur.

Arthur was certainly born in Holland, as later he was compelled to naturalize himself in Virginia.
Susanna Burnet had a younger sister Elizabeth, baptized at St. Benet Fink 6 January, 1612/3; she married another Merchant Adventurer. William Cockcroft, who was at one time the Treasurer of the Merchant Adventurers in Holland. He died at Rotterdam before 7 July, 1653, leaving three children, William, Elizabeth and Magdalen. His wife Elizabeth was alive on 14 August, 1649, but she apparently died before her husband. On 7 July, 1653, administration on the estate of Elizabeth Cockcroft, "late of parts beyond the seas," was granted in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury to her sister, Hester Burnet (bapt. 24 April, 1614, at St. Benet Fink), who was also made curatrix of her three children, William, Elizabeth and Mary (P. P. C. Admons). William went to Virginia, where he joined his Moseley relatives in Lower Norfolk. He is named in the will of William Moseley as "my cosen William Cockcroft." He [William Cockroft] lived on the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River and his will, dated 20 January, 1686/7, was proved 21 February, 1686/7. He [William Cockroft] names his children William, Sarah, Jehue, Thomas and John and his cousin William Moseley (McIntosh op. cit., p, 103).

Susanna Blackmore, the only daughter of Susanna (Burnet) Moseley by her first husband, Arthur Blackmore, married in Holland another English merchant there named Humphrey Robinson. He also lived in Rotterdam and died soon after marriage without issue. On 14 August, 1649, Susanna "Robbeson resident of Rotterdam, widow of Mr. Amphey Robbeson merchant of Rotterdam" made her will; she left the entire estate to her mother "Susanna Moesalaer" and if she should predecease her then to her "half brothers Willem and Arthur Moesalaer" and if they should die before her then to her aunts "Lijsbet Cockeroff " and "Hester Bornet," This will, which was evidently made in view of her intended emigration to Virginia, was never probated but remained among the records of the Rotterdam Notary Arent van der Graef where it was found. Susanna accompanied her stepfather William Moseley to Virginia and in 16 March, 1649/5o, he had a certificate for five hundred and fifty acres to transport himself, Susanna his wife, Arthur and William Moseley, his sons, and "Susanna Robinson alias Corker" et. als. into the Colony (cf. New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 47, p. 66). William Moseley by his will left a bequest to 11 my grandchild Corker" (See an article by the writer in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 100, pp. 94-99, entitled "William Moseley, Gent., of Lower Norfolk County, Virginia, and His Wife Susanna").

It is evident, I submit, that very soon after her arrival in Virginia, late in 1649 or early in 1650, Susanna (Blackmore) Robinson married Capt. William Corker, prior to 16 March, 1650. She was evidently the mother of his eldest child Susanna, who is named in the will of William Moseley as "my grandchild Corker." How many of Capt. William Corker's other children were also hers I cannot say.

END OF SOURCES
In reply to Linda (see below) there were two David Moseleys (Mosely) in the Mt Sterling (Unionville) Illinois area. David W Moseley was the brother of my gr grandfather William Smith Moseley. David A Moseley was the son of David W Moseley. There is a photo of the David A's headstone (as well as others at Mt Sterling) on my web site:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cgmose/ilmassac_mts...

Additional info is listed below. I have additional info on this Moseley line (caucasian).

1. David W. Moseley was born 1856 in Illinois, and died 1883. He married Mary Andrews 1880.

Child of David Moseley and Mary Andrews is:
2	i.	David A. Moseley(1), born 13 Mar 18822; died 09 Feb 1919 in Massac Co., IL(2).
Endnotes

1. Headstone for David A. Moseley.
2. Massac Co Death & Stillbirth index 1919-1920, page 201.

***********************************************************************

-----Original Message-----
From: L MO2
Sent: Sunday, October 10, 2004 4:23 PM
To: MOSELEY-L@rootsweb.com
Subject: Re: Finding my Moseley ancestors

Well that makes for another brick wall. We have no David in our line, it
coming off Joel Walker Moseley who came to Illinois from Kentucky, and I
guess we're tracking along the lines of two races here; ours being white.
But I have come across referrences now and then to a David and this Doctor
Moseley you mention. Could they have been in the Mt. Sterling area of
Illinois at one time? Wish more folks would designate race so we could sort
out these tangled roots. :)

Let me know if they were in the Mt. Sterling area and I'll check my disks as
I seem to recall downloading a picture of a D Moseley from somewhere around
that area. You just can't read the headstone that well even with me trying
to restore it to make the inscription half way legible. If I can locate it I
can always send it along to you. Have other Moseley pictures of headstones
yet to identify as well, but off hand I can't say what given names would be
included there.

Good luck

Linda

Warren...I sure appreciate your insight on my own researches into this line. Are you also researching the Emmaline Cupp Line? of course i am looking for that data in order to update my file on john green moseleys remarriage and death. Emmaline had two children from a prior marriage to ? Cupp, but I never knew her maiden name, although i have the names of her children and their spouses, i havent gotten any further on that line either. i am still trying to figure out johns line, and wish i could find a connection to your moseley history book, but that still looks to be sometime in the future... this line is making me crazy! thank you for your words of caution about edward moseley and although i don't want to hit a dead end i have to explore the possibilities, even if slim.
gloria

22 sep 2001
you are in luck! at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com
database moseley1 emphasizes the moseley side and database ildau also has the martin family side.
In either of those databases search under surname Martin
and then first name Rebekah (and Elizabeth)

You are welcome to copy down data for free from those internet databases. But if it's very important to you, I recommend you also purchase the two volume Moseley genealogy book published last year 2000, as it only costs $30 including both volumes and including postage. $30 from Warren L. Forsythe Box 1299 Ellensburg WA 98926-1299 The book is also at 200 libraries in all states, but some families have had corrections listed on the above moseley1 database on worldconnect site during the past 15 months since the book was published. And further corrections appear every few months on the internet site.

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper

Sunday, Dec. 10, 1911:

• "Dr. Emma Reiss Mosely Bailey, of Rome, Ga., will leave shortly for that city, where her only brother, Captain A.B. Moseley, is dangerously ill, says the Washington Herald. Captain Moseley is a Confederate veteran, having served under General Beauregard. At the battle of Manassas he was wounded by a Minie-ball and captured, but managed to escape, in turn making prisoner a Federal major with his horse and trappings. General Beauregard's horse having been shot under him, the Confederate leader accepted the captured horse as his mount. Moseley was promoted from second lieutenant to a captaincy for bravery."

Not my line, just sharing.

Curious to know how old James moseley would be today. I am Mark Moseley and My Grandfather was a James Moseley born in 1903 As a teenager he moved to argentina for work and later to California eventually to Louisiana in about 1935 Had My dad Frank Moseley in 1939 and his sister Wanda a couple of years earlier. Frank Moseley and Family moved to Texas in the late 60's I was born in 69 and James Moseley and wife moved to Temple Texas in about 1972. To the Dallas area in 84 and eventually dies at the age of 99. I know his family line came from Oklahoma so its Highly likely that we are related some way.

My mother's family is from Washington County, Alabama. Their last name is Moseley, Faith and Shoultz. I have found some very intresting information on deeds and land for this family. If you have any information on Faith: J.W., Hiram, Leroy, Felix...from the late 1800's, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Most all the Moseley's in Alabama are probably related. I would be interested in any info you may have. Looking for info on Lewis Elijah Moseley who had a son named William Moseley married to Ceripha Mariah Williams, who had a son named Avington Burton Moseley in Pickens County. Any other children of Lewis Elijah Moseley as well.

It has a lot of this information and has over 100 pictures dating to 1599 I think. Please let me know how to get one as soon as possible. Someone said a copy was in the Little main library history department but I do not know how to get one.

Re: Moseley/Mosley/Mosely DNA Project-Results to Date & Request for Participants

Hi, Margaret. It is speculation that William b. 1724 was married to a Mason, probably because a child of his was named Mason. The earliest Moseley in my line who has been documented is William b. 1624 England who was transported to the Old Rappahannock area of VA in 1650 by William Underwood. It has also been speculated that Underwood's wife was a sister or cousin to William. We do not know where in England he was born.

Are there any male Moseleys from your line who would test for the DNA project? We are desperately looking for candidates from Great Britain to be tested. That is probably the only way to figure out which Moseleys in England to research further.

Thanks for your interest. I hope to hear from you soon,

Lynda Moseley
Barnwell, SC

Elizabeth Ann MOSELEY or MOSLEY, born possibly in Giles County VA

I am looking for information regarding an Elizabeth Ann Moseley or Mosley, born possibly in Giles County VA, and reportedly the daughter of a full-Indian, probably Cherokee. This Elizabeth Ann Moseley probably married a Beavers, and her daughter was Martha Ann Francis Beavers of McDowell County WV; there is a legend involving Elizabeth Ann's mother in an incident on the New River near Glyn Lyn or Narrows Virginia. Any info greatly appreciated.

I believe he is buried in the Prude Cemetery in a now unmarked grave. I have no info on his parents or any relatives. I would appreciate any info.
