Re: Samuel Moses

Ronnie,

If the William H. Moses you are referring to here is the same William H. Moses that you referred to in other messages, I believe you're missing a generation. You appear to have connected William H. Moses born 1823 who married Ardenia Blankenship (who we've already established as your ancestor) to not his father William Moses but rather his presumed grandfather, Samuel Moses (i.e. the presumed father of William Moses born 1785 in Nelson county, Virginia).

The dates you give here could not possibly be correct. If Samuel and Maria (or Marcella, which I've also seen as her first name) are the parents of William Moses (not William H. Moses, but just William Moses) born 1785 in Nelson County, then Maria could not possibly have been born in 1785 herself. In fact the birth and death dates you give for Samuel's wife Maria are in fact the birth and death dates for Samuel's son William, who was the father of William H. Moses.

In other words, here is the line of ancestry that I think you're trying to investigate:

Samuel Moses & wife Maria/Marcella
> William Moses & wife Isabelle Hill
> > William H. Moses & wife Ardenia Blankenship
> > > Otey Moses & wife Mary Garlick
> > > > Mollie Moses & husband William E. Creasy

But your message is skipping an entire generation -- you're trying to link William H. Moses to his grandfather Samuel Moses as a son, which just won't work.

I'm guessing that it won't be easy to find any marriage records for Samuel Moses, especially since he is supposed to be from England. It is likely he would have been married there before coming to America.

It would be very helpful to try and keep the names and dates straight rather than mixing them up, which just leads to confusion.

I'm guessing that the best type of record to look for to prove the connection between Samuel Moses and William Moses would be to try and find the will of Samuel Moses. Or perhaps the birth record for William Moses if that is available.

-- Mary D. Taffet
Board & List Admin for MOSES

I'm not sure as to when they actually moved to lee county. Also, Margarette, eventually left Baremus with their three children (girls) and she moved to New York and never return to South carolina.
I believe the Samuel Moses you mentioned (1785-1837) is the son of the John Moses, Jr. (1746-1809) you mentioned, and his first wife Elizabeth, who died in 1804. Samuel is mentioned in John Moses' probate records.

I do not decend from John Moses; instead, my line is through his second wife Anna, after her second marriage to Drury May. Do you know of Anna's maiden name?

Do you have information on Samuel and Mason's other children?

William Moses of Nelson County, Virginia

I have looked at the registry of marriages in Montgomery County, Virginia. William Moses and Ardenia Blankenship had marriage that took place in that county 4 April 1843. William's father is named as William and witnesses are Jacob Moses and Allen Moses. This certainly would indicate that William who married Ardenia Blankenship was a son of William Moses of Nelson County as Jacob and Allen are both sons of this William as well. I remember back when I was doing Moses research that William went to the courthouse to give permission for all of his children to marry except for Archy who was the man that I was researching....it made me crazy at the time. When I get a chance I'll look at my notes on this to see if that is correct. marsha moses

Your Mollie Moses married William E. Creasy on December 29th, 1896 according to the Virginia Marriage records available at FamilySearch. Her father's name is listed as "O. Moses" and her mother's name as "M. Moses", which would fit with Otey and Mary.

The 1900 census shows William and Mollie with a son named Harless O. Creasy, which must be your grandfather.

The 1880 census shows Otey Moses and his wife Mary with a daughter named Mollie. I believe I've seen Mary's surname listed as Garelick, so that fits with your grandfather's knowledge. Otey Moses and Mary (Garelick) were your grandfather's grandparents, and your great-great-grandparents.

The 1860 census shows William H. Moses and his wife Ardenia (Blankenship) with a son named Otey. So William H. Moses and his wife Ardenia Blankenship are your great-great-great-grandparents.

I just checked the Virginia Marriage records at FamilySearch again, and see a record there for Ardenia G. Blankenship. It shows her husband's name as William H. Moses and her husband's father's name as William Moses. So this is the proof I didn't have earlier to verify that the father of William H. Moses was William Moses born 1785 in Nelson county, Virginia. Notes I've seen said that this earlier William Moses was married several times, and that his wife named Isabelle Hill was the mother of William H. Moses. So that would make William Moses and Isabelle Hill your great-great-great-great-grandparents.

I'm sorry, but I don't quite understand what you think is strange.

You asked for help finding William H. Moses, which I thought I provided in my earlier reply.
You must have misunderstood my last reply. The parents of your Otey Moses were that William H. Moses born about 1822 in Virginia and his wife Ardenia Blankenship; that is clear from the 1860 census.

What I couldn't tell you for sure without actual documentation is whether the parents of William H. Moses (and grandparents of your Otey Moses) were in fact William Moses born 1785 in Nelson county Virginia and his wife Isabelle Hill. It's that next generation back, past William H. Moses, where I don't have actual documentation, other than a message found in the MOSES mailing list archives.

The parentage of Otey Moses was never in doubt.

-- Mary D. Taffet
Board & List Admin for MOSES

P.S.: Since this message thread doesn't actually include any info about your Mollie V. Moses, I may need to change the subject line to something more appropriate.

There were 2 different William H. Moses's born in Virginia at about that same time. One of them is related to me; the other one is your guy. The father of your Otey Moses was William H. Moses who married Ardenia Blankenship. A search of the MOSES mailing list archives shows that your William H. Moses was the son of William Moses of Nelson County, Virginia and his wife Isabelle Hill.

I'll see if I can find any actual documentation of that, but since census records prior to 1850 didn't list the names of children, that may be difficult.

-- Mary D.
John-Isaac-Thomas-John-Moses UK-Merchants in Norway

I am seeking information about the final part of "young" John Moses', b. 1781 in Norway, life in the UK. "Young" John Moses was son of Isaac Moses, b. 1738 (d. 1807), from UK, Cumberland, and Norwegian wife Karen Barbara Thode.

"Old" John Moses went to Kristiansund Norway appr. 1745, and joined John Ramsay of Banffshire Scotland in his flourishing bacalao (clipfish)company.
"Old" John Moses returned to the UK 1764, and let nephew George Moses run the business. He was not quite satisfied with the way George tended his duties and 16 years later, he sold the company to two other nephews; Isaac Moses and his cousin Thomas Moses (both most probably from Newcastle). They were both cousins of George Moses.
Isaach Moses married Karen Barbara Thode and she gave birth to "young" John Moses 1781. She died in this childbirth.
"Young" John grew up in Kristiansund, Norway and established a large scale business with as much as 23 ships doing import of grain/export of fish and lumber.
Difficult times, with the Napoleonic wars etc. eventually made international trade complicated and unsafe and his company went bankrupt 1818.
John had married Anna Holck Tordenskjold and had become father of 4 living sons. After the bankrupsy, they divorced.
Sometimes around 1825, he went to the UK to "start" up again. It has been said that two of his son joined him a little later. John Moses died jan. 29, 1849, in Limehouse, Middlesex. Little is known about this last period of his life.
John Moses was elected to be Kristiansunds representative in the gathering at Eidsvoll, in 1814, to make the Norwegian Constitution. As the bicentennial of this event is approaching, the national archive-authorities has launched a major collaboration between interested genealogists and descendants of the 112 representatives, to find out about the descendants of thos men.
I have taken responsibility for "young" John Moses and I therefore seek assistance in the UK among those of you who might find this interesting.

John Moses' sons with Anna Holck Tordenskjold:
Isaac Christopher Moses, b. nov. 18 1804
Hans Thomas Lange Moses, b. may 31 1807
Carl Jacob Lund Moses, b. nov. 28 1809
John Moses, b. sept. 1813

I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

Tom Kaasen
Kristiansund, Norway

It seems that John Moses did not emigrate to the UK until the early 1830ties. I found a note of him partly living in Trondheim and Kristiansund in the year 1830.

John's occupation in UK/London is most probably ship-broking.

Alexandra,

I don't think anyone really knows where the NAME originates from.

But as for families, I can tell that there isn't ONE Moses family, but MANY Moses families.

They have immigrated to the U.S. from England, France, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Germany, Romania, Switzerland, Lebanon, Israel, and too many others to keep track of.

There are MOSES individuals who are Lutheran, Catholic, Protestant (including Methodist, Baptist, etc.), Jewish, Muslim, and probably other religions as well.

The wide disparity in the geographical origin of the various members of the various unconnected MOSES families is one of the main reasons for the surname DNA study being conducted at this time.

Did you have a specific family that you are trying to trace? If so, you need to provide information that is as specific as possible -- simply because there are so many lines that are not known for a fact to be connected to each other.

-- Mary D.
Hi, this is also my line. The reason you can't connect to the MOSES lines, is because you are not from the MOSES clan. I had several men from this line DNA tested and it matches none of the MOSES lines. On the other hand, they were exact 67 marker match to the TALLENT line. It appears that there was a connection between a MOSES female and a TALLENT male. If you send me your line, I will send mine to you and see how we match up.

His father was Burgeon Moses, Dr. William Athen Moses, David Moses III, David Moses II, David Moses I, and I think Ezekiel Moses from France. This side of the family is really interesting because I can't find any information than that. I belong to ancestry.com but the tree is under my sons name.
Mary Jo,

Yes, Don and I have communicated quite a bit in the past, as early as probably sometime in the 1990s. He and I believe we are connected to the same Moses line that came from Ilbesheim in Germany to Chester County, PA. We know through DNA tests that my direct-line ancestor Johann Adam Moses and his direct-line ancestor Heinrich Moses were related. I personally believe that they were probably brothers, but they could have been cousins or some other close relation.

I appreciate your desire to put us in touch with each other, but that's not necessary as we've been in touch for probably more than a decade now.

-- Thanks,
Mary

Michael and others reading this thread:

I want to point out that the Moses family described here by Michael is not the ONLY Moses family that lived in Germany.

My own Moses family once lived in the area of Ilbesheim, near Kirchheimbolanden, and came to America in 1743, and there were many other Moses family members who lived in that same area, as early as the 1600s, and continued to live in that same area well into the 1800s. My Moses line came to Germany from Amsterdam sometime between 1709 and 1722, though I don't know exactly when.

-- Mary D.
Re: Moses family in Germany

In regards to the Moses Family, following information for those who might be interested:

a) "my" moses family tree is now open to public / search for Moses and Hellmich.

b) Mary Jo and I are still investigating about further details on the Moses familiy. What we have found out so far:

1) The moses family was by occupation traditionally blacksmiths, farmers and tailors.

2) At some point, some of them immigrated (long before the 3rd Reich) to the UK and to the US.

3) most of them came from Heinrichs Thueringen (Thuringia) in Germany. Which at some point belonged to Prussia. Which makes it a bit more difficult to investigate any further: the according church archives are stored in the state of Sachsen (Saxony; City: Magdeburg) and not as one would assume in the state of Thuringia.

There is also a chance to obtain further information from the local church in Heinrichs:

*Evang. Pfarramt Suhl-Heinrichs*
Priest: Prüfer, Ulrich,
An der Kirche 3, 98529 Suhl,
Phone. 03681/722609 Fax:
03681/722609
Suhl-Heinrichs

4) Within the family it was allways said, that the original name was not Moses, but one of the following: Moises, Meuses, Moiyses, Moyeses. Meuyses or something that sounds familiar (in german). Supposedly this was due to a mistake by some officials that the name became Moses. According to our records, this mistake might have happened anywhere befor the 17th century.

5) Some of the Moses family, who remained in Germany, stayed in Heinrichs as blacksmiths and were in the active Widerstand against the Nazi regime. Some others left Heinrichs and went to Frankfurt, but changed their last name to Hellmich.

6) Heinrichs is today a part of a city called SUHL (Thuringia, Germay). Suhl is about 200 km northeast of Frankfurt and close to Erfurt.

My last name is Moses. My ancestors, foremost Simon Moses, immigrated from what was Syria in a little village called Bechmizzine in the El Koura district in Mt. Lebanon. They settled in Vicksburg right on border of Louisianna. Where they built Antiochian Orthodox Church, St George. Not sure if that will help.

Ellis Moses
gemhaven@gmail.com

My Great Grandfather Simon Moses, immigrated in 1888 from Syria what is now Lebanon to Whitley County, Beattyville, KY. This was his first stop. He married a Nina Jones from their and had two sons, Malick and John Simon Moses. I believe Nina must to have died at birth of John. Would you know of any Nina Jones. Was she of native American descent?

Thank you,
Ellis Moses

What was your grandfathers name? We had a Moses that ran away from family in Vicksburg, MS which is right on border of LA. Last record I found of him was in correctional facility in New Orleans 1910.

gemhaven@gmail.com
Ellis Moses
