Hello Lisa, I am married to the son of Christine (Pupkes) Rieger, b. 1913 in Falls City Nebraska to Friedrick and Hannah (Strieben) Pupkes. They came from Germany in the late 1890's, and settled in Nebraska, Missouri, and back to Nebraska. They had 8 children - Christine was the youngest.

I am thinking that the William (Bill) Pupkes in your family tree may be either Christine's brother or nephew. Can you tell me when he was born, and where (Nebraska or Kansas)?

I've found that the name Pupkes is rare - I've had no luck trying to research the family back into Germany b4 1895.

Thanks,

Patsy Rieger

Hi Libby,
I have some friends and found out recently that their surname is Moulkton. I have been trying to see where they link in to our Moulton side of things. Strangely Darrens father is Warren Moulton and wait for it his wifes nhame is Elizabeth Moulton funnily. I am wondering if you have come across them at some point in your moulton searches? I am new to this tree thing as I wanted to research Sarah Golding who was apparently jewish. My husband is Jewish and I have converted and so naturally am very interested in that side of things. Do you know anything of her.I had spoken with Grandpa lloyd about her who confirmed she was in fact Jewish but cannot find any other information on this.

I think I have some information for you, although I am responding to this msg which is 12 years old - hope you are still on this website.
My great grandmother's name was Fannie Brunk Moulton, my grandmother's (Martha E Moulton Pearce) mother and she was from Springfield Mass. Fannie's husband was Stephen P Moulton, who very well could be your great grandfather. From what I know about them, Stephen and Fannie were from Germany.

Dear Ken,

Thank you for getting back to me about our common ancestor.
Any new information would be good.
I have seen in the internet site "absoluteastronomy.com" a discussion about Asa Harris MOULTON. Are you this Kenneth MOULTON ?
Were you able to make the connection between Asa Harris MOULTON and the Lt Col. Stephen MOULTON ?
I can't find more information about Benjamin MOULTON.
He born about 1782 in the US and he lived at least 10 years with Asa Harris and Mary MOULTON (MISENER) when they were living in Haldimand County, Ontario, CANADA.

Could Benjamin be the father, the uncle or an older brother of Asa Harris ?
Where were they born ?
Who was the mother of Asa Harris ?
Thank you very much for any information you can provide.
Regards.
Kim
PeggyJean,

So great to hear from you. First, I since realized the Samuel MOULTONS that I researched are in Philadelphia, not Baltimore. I will include that information either later or in another reply to keep this from being too long.

Though I highly suspect our MOULTONs are related (how many MOULTON families can there be in one area?) you may want to make contact with the owner of the following tree as they seem to be researching the same Samuel Moulton that you have:

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/6941806/person/-1198245239

Next, let me tell you about my Samuel Moulton. Again, to keep it brief, I will direct you to another longer post where I speculate about several generations of MOULTONs in Harford County, MD. Much of it is accurate; some of it is speculation. I will gladly share documentation/proof. My post is at the following link:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.moulton/865/mb.ashx

This additional post explains how Samuel enters my picture:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.moulton/865.1/mb.ashx

I would appreciate getting a copy of your Samuel's death certificate. Do you know any of Samuel's siblings or any other extended family? Do you have any references to Harford Co, MD?

Lavinia Ricketts
lricketts@jtrinc.com

Re: Harford, MD Molton / Moulton family (Mathew and Ezekiel) 1790 - 1850

Since posting this, I discovered a land record (Sept 13, 1869) transferring the remainder of Woods Close from Ezekiel Moulton to Samuel Moulton (gentleman of Baltimore). The land record esentially says:

.....the said track of land being the same which Thomas Mitchell by indenture bearing date the twentieth day of May Anno Domino one thousand seven hundred and twenty (1720) granted and conveyed unto Mathew Moulton who afterwards to wit about the year 1781 died leaving a will wherein he
devised the same to his son Mathew Moulton who also died in the year 1843 having first made his last will and testament dated February 5th 1842 and admitted to probate in the County of Harford and State of Maryland November 21st 1843 wherein he devisted the whole of said tract of land except the said two and one half acres to his son the said Ezekiel Moulton......

I have not locate a will in 1781 for that Mathew Moulton. However this record is CLEARLY not entirely accurate -- I think it blurred two generations. I I ***think***:

Mathew Moulton I (died 1720) acquired the land from Thomas Mitchell in 1720 and died in 1725 (I have that will). I have records for all of this.

Mathew Moulton II born 1709 and died in 1781.

Mathew Moulton III born 1760 and died 1843. Among his children was Ezekiel Moulton.

AND....Who is Samuel Moulton???

I find the following Census Records in Philadephia:

1850 Kensington, Ward 2
Samuel Moulton 1802 (Carpenter)
Mary
Mary 19
Catherine 18
Samuel 17 (Carpenter)
William 15
Mervina 12

1860
Samuel Moulton 1804 Master Carpenter
Mary 50
William 24

Samuel Mouton 1832
Amelia 26
Alice 3

1870
Samuel Moulton 1800
Mary 70
William 36
Meriam Hamilton 33

Samuel Mouton 1833
Anna 33
Alice 12
Emma 9

1880
Sam Moulton 1800
Mary 80

Saml Moulton Jr. 1832
Elizabeth M 45
Alice E 22
Emma 18

Lavinia Ricketts
lricketts@jtrinc.com
Thank you for your response to my message. I have been looking for information on Samuel since 2004 but have not found anything except for his immediate family members . I would be very interested in discussing
Samuel Moulton. He lived in the Baltimore Ward 7 Baltimore (Independent City, MD.) in 1870 and then in 1880 in Wilmington DE.. The 1870 census has his birth
year at 1821 and the 1880 census at 1833. He is my gr. grandfather on my mothers side and I have a copy of his death cert. and he died in 1908 at age87. He is buried in Silverbrook Cemetery in Wilmington, De.

I hope this helps a little and would like to hear from you again.
Thank You peggyjean39

Eleanora (Ella/Nellie) M. BROWN (b.28 Jul 1837; d. 02 Sep 1915). Ella married Nathaniel APPLETON on 05 Jan 1865. I believe there were five children born to Ella and Nathaniel APPLETON:
Edward A. b. 1868; Anna A.B. b. 1870; Georgie E. b. 1873; Jennie E. b. 1874 and Susie May b. 1877.

2. Edmund A. BROWN (b.25 Dec 1842- d. after 1910). Edmund married Annie A. MOULTON on 24 Dec 1865. I know of four children to that marriage:
Harry Moulton b.. 1870 (d.l871); Herbert C. b. Sep 1872; Clarence W. b. 31 Jul 1875; Edith M. b.29 Jul 1877.

3. Ezra Woodbury Brown (my g-g grandfather) b. 21 Sep 1843; d. 29 Oct 1901. Ezra married Mary Dorothy HOWARTH on 10 Aug 1865. The three children know from that marriage are:
Louis M. b. 30 July 1866; Frank Howarth b. 06 May 1869 and Ezra Austin (my great grandfather) b. 16 Jul 1872.

My “brick wall” goes back to the parents of the first Edmund BROWN, born in 1806. All records state that he was born in “Stockholm, Sweden”. ‘Just hoping someone may be able to help and I am also interested in connecting with other descendants of Edmund A. and Susan A. Woodbury BROWN.

Who is my Susannah Moulton?

My great grandmother was Susannah Moulton born in Indiana who married John William Lewis in Ohio Co. in 1847. She was born about 1827 and I have found her with my Lewis family in later censuses in Switzerland and Ohio Counties. I thought she was the daughter of Jeremiah Moulton and Vienna Ricketts but I am finding quite a bit of evidence that Susannah Moulton married Joseph Parker and died in Woodford Co, Illinois. I know my Susannah Moulton Lewis is from the same Moultons, but probably not the daughter of Jeremiah. Families used the same first names over and over but I have not found another Susannah close to the right age. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Burnice Lewis

Harford, MD Molton / Moulton family (Mathew and Ezekiel) 1790 - 1850

Greetings,

I have analyzed the census records and some other records to make a "guess" at the names through the generations. If you are interested in this family I would appreciate your critical review of my analysis. Please share if you have conflicting or supporting information for my theory:

1790 census- Mathew Molton
Males: <16: 3; >16: 1
Females: 2

We start with 2 possible scenarios for the 1790 census. In both cases the father has passed. Mathew Molton is the oldest son and his mother is living with him. He either has younger male siblings or 3 male childern by a first wife. The other female is either his first wife or a female sibling.

1800 census - Mathew Molton
Male: 10-15: 2; 26-44:1
Female: <10: 2; 16-25: 1; 45+: 1

Mathew accounts for the male 26-44. His mother accounts for the female over 45. Either his female sibling has married and moved out or if that female was his wife, she has died. He has now married Sarah Boyd (we learn this from later census or other records), accounting for the female 16 -25. One of the males from previous census (either a brother - most likely; or a son) is missing -- either died or married and moved out. Two brothers/sons from previous census still remain. He has two new daughters (I believe one is named Elizabeth; I can't name the other) -- probably children of Sarah.

1810 census - Mathew Molton
Male: <10: 2; 10-15: 1; 16-25: 1; >45: 1
Female: <10: 2; 10-15: 2; 16-25: 1; >45

Remaining from 1800 census: Mathew; one brother/son; Mother; Sarah (wife); 2 daughters. One brother/son is gone (married/died). Mathew has 5 new dependants: 2 sons (Ezekiel and William?) and 2 daughters (Sarah and Mary?). 1 of the new dependants is difficult to identify (a son?) as he should have been accounted for on the 1800 census. Possibly he is born in 1800 after the census was completed. Possibly his ages is reported wrong here. I believe his name is John.

1820 census - Mathew Molton
Males: <10:2; 10-15: 1; 16-25: 1; >45: 1
Female: 10-15: 2; >45: 1

Mathew and Sarah account for "over 45." John is the male 16-25. Mary and Sarah account for females 10-15. A new male child (Thomas) is one of the males under 10. Ezekiel and William account for the other two males; I am not sure which child is which age.

Elizabeth has married in 1818. Mathew's mother has died.

1830 census - Mathew Molton (some indexes transcribed wrong as Motton)
Male: 10-14: 1; 15-19:1; 70-79:1
Female: 20-29: 1; 50-59: 1

Mathew and Sarah are obvious. Sarah is the female 20-29 (she marries in 1836). Thomas and Ezekiel account for the other two males.

William married in 1826. Mary married in 1822. John married in 1820.

1840 census - Ezekiel Moulton (head of household has changed to Ezekiel)
Male: <5: 1; 5-9: 1; 10-14:1; 30-39: 1; 70-79: 1
Female: 5-9: 1; 20-29: 1; 50-59: 1

Ezekiel has married Rebecca Bailey. Both of his parents are living with him: Mathew and Sarah. Ezekiel and Rebecca have children: Ezekiel Columbus, Charles, Amelia. I cannot account for the male 10-14.

1850 census - Ezekiel Molton

Mathew has died, but Sarah is still living with Ezekiel and Rebecca. Ezekiel Columbus, Charles and Amelia are still at home.

Any feedback would certainly be appreciated. Any information on folks that passed through this household would also be appreciated.

Lavinia Ricketts
FL

I am searching for the first name and origins of a male Moulton who was married to a Isabelle MacLeod [spelling maybe slightly different] and divorced most likely in Killingly Ct. or surrounding area. Isabelle was born abt 1871 to 1873, most likely in Halifax, Nova Scotia though one document states New Brunswick. I have no idea what year she could or would have married her first husband.
She married her 2nd husband in Killingly in 1892. The marriage certificate gives her first married name, Moulton and states she is divorced. I am trying to locate her parents names and was hopefully if I located where she and her first husband were married it might answer some questions.
Thank you KB

Ebenezer Moulton in South Brimfield

I am searching for the maiden name of Abigail - wife of Ebenezer Moulton who had son Stephen Moulton 30 Apr 1735. A common misconception is that Abigail was the widow of John Bound. Not true - see below. Here is what I know so far:

Regarding Ebenezer Moulton:

Ebenezer Moulton born 25 Dec 1709 in Windham, CT to Robert Moulton and Hannah Groves. Robert and his wife Hannah lived in Salem first, then removed to Windham, CT in 1709 just before the birth of Ebenezer, and then about 1725/6 to Brimfield, MA in the area which was to become then South Brimfield and now Wales. Ebenezer was about 16 when he moved to Brimfield with his family.

Wikipedia: the area of today’s town of Wales was first settled in 1726 and was set aside from Brimfield and officially incorporated on August 23, 1775 as South Brimfield, a name it kept until February 20, 1828 when the town was renamed Wales after James Lawrence Wales, a local benefactor.

An important book is “Annals of the Church in Brimfield”, Jason Morse, 1856. Page 16: “Nov ye 22nd, 1734. We whose names are Underwritten Do own & Acknowledge Our Selves to Be of that persuasion commonly Called anababtists. Nathaniel Munger, Dorothy Munger, Elnathun Munger, Robert Moulton, Ebenezer Moulton Anthony Needham, Humphrey Needham, John Bullen Jr., Thomas Green and Thomas Green Jr.” (as a footnote, “the Moultons lived on the road south to Strafford near the center of Wales”)

The Moulton Annals says that Ebenezer married first, Abigail Unknown, widow of John Bound and second, Eunice Hall. We know this to be incorrect. Rather, Ebenezer married Abigail Unknown who was NOT the widow of John Bound (see info below on Ebenezer’s second wife Eunice). The marriage to Abigail Unknown must have occurred circa 1734-1735 because Stephen Moulton was born 30 Mar 1735 in Brimfield, Massachusetts per Brimfield Vital Records (NEHGS database). Abigail Unknown died 11 Nov 1735 in Brimfield, Massachusetts per Brimfield Vital Records (NEHGS database).

Who was Abigail Unknown? Likely it was someone from Brimfield, likely a church going family, and likely within the South Brimfield area. The answer is not yet learned, but it seems important to unravel the timeline of Ebenezer Moulton and the tumultuous church unrest of the time and his role there in. Abigail must likely be from one of these families. .

Ebenezer Moulton (of Brimfield) and Eunice Hall of Sutton married 6 Apr 1739 in Sutton. Brimfield Vital Records (NEHGS database MA Vitals to 1850). Eunice Fuller married first John Bound, then second Percival Hall, then third Ebenezer Moulton. See the notes for Eunice Fuller for more info.

The following account of Ebenezer Moulton, given on page 466, Volume II, of the “History of Baptists in New England”, Burrage, Henry S., and is largely substantiated by record:

"The first Baptist church on the county of Hampshire was formed (and organized by Ebenezer Moulton) in Brimfield, 4th of November, 1736, and Mr. Ebenezer Moulton was ordained their pastor, 4th of November 1741. His father and a majority of the church opposed the work that was then going on in the land, while he and a minor part were alive in it: and they had much controversy about it for seven years, and then about fifteen of them told their experiences to each other's satisfaction and signed new articles and a covenant, and Mr. Moulton took them as his church and would not allow any others to commune with them without coming in at this door. Elder Moulton was often called to other places to preach and baptize in and after 1749. He was called more than eighty miles that year and baptism ten at Bridgewater and three at Raynham. But as his people had been trained up with prejudices against hiring ministers they did very little for the support of their own minister; therefore he took to merchandising when there were scarcely any merchants in that part of the country; and he seemed to prosper for a number of years and was a leader in building them a new meeting house. But towards the close of the war, which ended in 1763, money was plenty and merchants multiplied, and Mr. Moulton found himself involved in debt and his creditors ready to devour him and he fled to Nova Scotia where he preached in several places. About 1779 Mr. Moulton obtained letters of license from his creditors to come home and he was esteemed among his old people until he died there in 1783."

Ref: Colonial Clergy and colonial Churches in New England by Dr. F. L. Weiss 1936 -- Gives Ebenezer born 1709. Ordained in Wales, Mass 4 Nov. 1736, Settled in Wales 1736-1763 - settled in Nova Scotia 1762-78; Baptized; died Wales 1783. Was he ordained in 1736 or 1741? – need more research. Maybe he was ordained twice?

From “The Literary Diary of Ezra Stiles”, by Ezra Stiles on 06 Sep 1771, page 155: “I find an account I had from the mouth of Rev. Samuel Maxwell formerly a Baptist Elder, but for about 18 years past or since 1753 a paedobaptist (spelling?). He was born 1688 and is still living. Among other Baptist Ordinations of which he gave me an account last Spring, I find he gave me his account of Elder Moulton’s ordination at which Elder Maxwell himself assisted. Elder Ebenezer Moulton was ordained Elder of the Baptist Church in Brimfield on the 4th day of November by the Laying of the Hands of Elder John Callender of Newport, preached 2 Tim. 2.2, Elder Samuel Maxwell of Newport, Elder Benjamin Marsh of Sutton, and Elder Jeremy Condy of Boston.

Ebenezer’s wife Eunice survived him but died before 1788 when his will was administered by his grandson Howard.

Other Notes:

The oldest continuous Baptist Church in Canada is the Wolfville United Baptist Church founded by Ebenezer Moulton.

Wolfville Baptist Church
487 Main Street,
(Corner of Highland Ave. & Main St.)
Wolfville, Nova Scotia B4P 1E3
Phone (902) 542-5524
main.office@wolfvillebaptist.ca

The members of this Church were first united by a “Solemn Covenant” in 1765 as “The Baptist Church of Christ in Horton”, and remained active for several years under the pastoral care of Elder Ebenezer Moulton (1765-1770) and Elder Joseph Reed (1770-1772). Several continuing members, together with others, covenanted on October 29, 1778, as “The Baptist Church of Horton”. The Church was incorporated on April 13, 1857, under the name “The First Baptist Church of Horton”; it became known, by an Act of Parliament passed February 16, 1896, as “The Wolfville Baptist Church”; and following the union of 1906 of the Regular and Free Baptist conventions of the Maritime Provinces, it was renamed “The Wolfville United Baptist Church”.

ELDER HEAD in Yarmouth was named after a resident, Mr. Ebenezer Moulton, who was a church elder. He came from Mass

Clue: The name "Stephen" does not show up in the Moulton line BEFORE 1735. Was Stephen in Abigail's line, perhaps her father?

Regarding Eunice Fuller, Ebenezer's second wife:

John Bound and Eunice Fuller married 15 Dec 1725. Salem Vital Records (NEHGS database MA Vitals to 1850).

29 Aug 1731 John Bound of Sutton and Mrs Bound are admitted to the First Baptist Church of Boston. Boston Church Records (NEHGS database).

Parcivel Hall and Euns [Eunice?] Bunds 18 Dec 1736. Brimfield Vital Records (NEHGS database MA Vitals to 1850).

WORCESTER COUNTY PROBATE RECORDS - Case No. 6,339; RUTH BOUNDS

On 4 Nov 1736, a guardianship bond was issued to Eunice Bounds, widow, for Ruth Bounds, aged about tenand daughter of John Bounds. Solomon Holman of Sutton and John Harwood of Uxbridge were sureties on the bondof £3,000 {2;66].

On 2 Dec 1740, another bond was issued to Robert Moulton, Jr., husbandman of Brim?eld in HampshireCounty. Robert Moulton, Jr. and Ebenezer Wallis, also of Brim?eld, were sureties on the £100 bond [2I7:51 1].

The account was filed by Ebenezer Moulton and Eunice Moulton, his wife and guardian of Ruth Bounds, herchild by her former husband. This account details the impraovements made to the fann by Moulton and shows a balancedue "the orphan" of £348:6:l [2:66-67].

Analysis: These probate records prove conclusively that Enive (not Abigail) was the widow of John Bounds. John & Enice Bounds had a daughter who later married John Moulton, Ebenezer's youngest brother. John & Ruth Moulton had a son John Bound Moulton.

I was excited to receive your message. It is not easy to find anyone working on the Moulton family. To find a person who is connected as closely as we are is really a great surprise. I am a descendant of Ezekiel Columbus Moulton. I have in my possession the family Bible that was purchased in Ft. Wayne, Indiana in 1860. It lists the family from Ezekiel down to my present generation. We have information about the family from that point. I do understand that we are also in the same line as you mentioned. I do not have any documentation on The Charles Moulton that you mention, though. Any help you can offer for documerntation will be a delight. Thank you for your resonse.
David Moulton

These are listed as my ggggrandparents, but my line runs out with George's father, who I think lived in Dorset, England. I have no information beyond Sarah, unfortunately. Do you have any other info on either line by chance?
By the way, our line runs through their son Thomas, and his son George.

Mary McKnight and Elija Moulton - Minnesota

I am looking for additional information on James McMullen, born 1828 in Maine and his wife, Charlotte McKnight, born in NB in 1830. Charlotte had a sister, Mary, who married Elija Moulton. James died in 1814 and Charlotte died in 1917 - both in MN. They married, perhaps in either Hennepin or Ramsey County, Minnesota in 1849. They had three children, with two surviving, Wilbert Howard and Albert E. Albert E. married into the Wilcox family. Wilbert's wife's first name was Harriet Frances. The importance of this family is that they may have traveled, in 1849, from Maine to MN with my 2nd great grandmother, Frances Bradbury Varney Fowler. Frances, as a widow with a young daughter, lived with the McMullen's in 1860 in St. Anthony, MN. Any suggestions and or connections to these families would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance!
I have the marrige license of James Mckinneth Moulton and Carrie Rebecca Jones. On the Marrige license Carrie signs her name as Carrie R JORDAN. This has thrown us off in our research, not to mention if William J Jones is her father he would have been 71yrs old when he had Carrie. Has anyone else come across this license or found the age diffrence between her and her father as odd?

Thank You,
Diann Norris Moulton

Just read your message of several years ago. I, too, am looking for Moultons in New England. My husband's middle name is Moulton and his paternal side has been in New England since the 1650's. We believe that our "Moulton" is tied with Joanna Moulton, the wife of Tristam Coffin. joanna is the daughter of Peter Moulton and Joanna Shaw. The start of our family tree is posted with Ancestry.com. And, if you wish to collaborate any information, our email address is CementHill@aol.com. Thanks for your time. Jeanette Clark
