George Moubray ( -1707) merchant of Edinburgh

I'm delighted to have just stumbled across the Mowbray homestead website. The Midlothian Parish Records (on Ancestry) are very interesting - many of these Moubrays must be related to the Moubray line of Castlelaw, Barnbougle and Cockairny.

I am trying to trace the ancestors of George Moubray ( -1707) merchant and burgess of Edinburgh. He married Marion Hamilton in Edinburgh on 4 May 1701; and they had at least one child, John, baptised on 24 December 1702.

I'd be grateful if anyone has any information about his ancestry or other relevant matters.

Kind regards

George

The Mowbrays were Master Mariners and several were lost at sea. My Mowbrays married into the Dickinson of Whitfield line and ended up in Stockton-on-Tees. They have now spread across the world to the United States, Canada and Australia.

http://www.dickinsons-of-whitfield.org/

Hi June,
Presumably you are referring to my website Mowbray Family History. Yes, there are 20+ documents of Mowbray family trees but I do not publish them on the website as they include living persons.

And I'm sorry to hear that you think it doesn't make sense to 'begin from beginning'. If you don't start with yourself and your known ancestors you could be climbing another person's family tree and mislead yourself.

I live in the UK and cannot research in USA so you need to do some work yourself getting back to your 'gateway' immigrant and then I could help you.

David Mowbray

Meghann,
I am your father's first cousin. My father was Perry Mowbray (d. 10/6/2003). Your father, George, and I hung out together when we were teenagers. You are correct that something happened when Owen (your grandfather) died and my father and yours stopped talking. Owen (b. 2/24/1921 d. 10/25/1981) His parents George Ernest and Queen Victoria (Doniel) Mowbray. Queenie died in 1924 and George remarried to Annie Clements who raised Perry and Owen as her own in the Fan District. They had two other children George Jr and Elsie both still in the Richmond area. I just ran across a picture of your dad in his boy scout uniform. I have totally lost track of him and Okie. Michael (who doe not have downs - your info isn't correct) was last known to be in Charlottesville. feel free to email me at eusher@emullc.com if you have questions.

Betty Mowbray Usher

wondering if you were able to get any where with the family tree I know nothing of the Mowbray's My dad George Walter Mowbray and uncle Owen Kirk Mowbray Jr, were the black sheeps of the family apparantly my grandfather Owen Kirk Sr was in ww2 came home and married his first cousin they had a son Michael who was born w/downs syndrome but what do they expect when you inbreed like that. furthermore, my father was living with his dad when he died in the 80's from a heart attack. My dad and grandfather apparantly were raised and frequented Oregon Hill Richmond,VA for all of their lives and I experienced that area as well as a small child. I have a few photo books that belonged to Owen Sr he was a bowler I know. My father use to work for Perry Mowbray the owner of The Mowbray Paint Co but they had a falling out 40 yrs or so ago and haven't spoke since. I have never met a Mowbray in my life and I'm told we're quite popular find it funny we spell our names the exact same way it is a very unusual spelling and we're both from the 804. please contact me my phone number is 804-909-0476 thanks Meghann Lloyd Mowbray

Hi Meghann, I'm descended from the Va Mowbrays and I've been visiting Va from Ohio every Summer since 2001. My GG Grandfather was William Jacob Moubray who lived in Sangersville in Augusta County. His parents were Lewis Zachariah Moubray and Mary Clatterbuck. Three of William's sons left for Ohio in the 1880's, one being Samuel, my G Grandfather. There has been a reunion at Grand Caverns Park in Augusta County for several years now. Have you been to any of them? I didn't know there was a lockdown but I'd like to share any info.

Thanks,
Phil Moubray

John Mowbray, 1st Earl of Nottingham and Daughter Eleanor Nottingham

Eleanor Nottingham (b.1394) married to Simon Cheney (b.1392)is supposed to be the daughter of John Nottingham (AKA John Mowbray, 1st Earl of Nottingham)who was the eldest son of John De Mowbray and Elizabeth Segrave.

I can not find any support for this fact. According to Wikipedia: John Mowbray was created Earl of Nottingham by Richard II. The earl died unmarried, his earldom dying with him.

Everyone that has this link in their tree seems to ignor this fact in order to tie them selves directly to Edward I of England. Which by the way I would like to do! But no - I had to go checking on the validity of my blood line!

Has anybody else stumbled onto this or is it just me? Any help will be helpful!

William
Mowbray DNA Project:

There are many Mowbray clans within the United States, United Kingdom and Worldwide. The nature of our familial relations is of particular interest. For many of us doing genealogical research the links between these clans in some cases has been difficult to establish. This project is an attempt to establish these familial relations and to give greater perspective of the relationship of the different clans and provide data to their common origins.

Surnames currently covered by this project to date are Mowbray, Moubray and Mowberry. All other variants of the Mowbray surname will be added to this project excluding variants that fall within the following format of Mayb*r*y.

Website for information and joining: www.familytreedna.com/public/Mowbray

Website for current results: www.mowbrayfamily.org/dna

Please review and consider joining our project.
