Hello,
My family is decended from the George W. Moyer and Mary Ellen Ray family tree. I also have information regarding Charles H. Moyer who was the President of The Western Federation of Miners. I'm sure we are connected. I have just started researching my family tree on the Moyer side, and most of this was already done for me through some information given to me by other family members.

Michelle,
With all your searching did you ever run across a Moyer girl named Grace who was born in Oct 14, 1930? She was born to a John, born about 1900 and wife Mary born about 1910. Grace was left at a boarding house with a woman named Price in Meadville PA when she was a toddler. She was supposedly adopted legally but has no adoption papers. She does have a birth certificate which lists her name as Grace Elizabeth Moyer and lists her parents living in Meadville, PA. Grace is of the white race.

Her bio parents who lived at the boarding house in Meadville, PA left the house and left their daughter there. They had lived there a short while. Grace doesn't know why they left..

Grace is still alive and thinks she has a sister and would like to kow the truth about her strange family. With all the adoptions and abanded kids in this Moyer branch I thought there might be a connection. I think she has said her bio parents moved around a bit. Can you help me? She is my mother and she had at one time hired an investigator but nothing came of it. Please email me at Nlf01@bellsouth.net to let me know if you can help.

Thank you

OK, it's me again. My wife descends from this John MOYER and that is the reason I was following the discussion of the two Catherines, and decided to weigh in on that subject.

Many years ago, we went to the Perry Co courthouse in New Lex in search of ancestors of Solomon MOYER 1811-1883. We had gotten back to Solomon fairly easily, but were stumped there. Among the records we checked was the will of John MOYER. Here is an abstract:
John Moyer - Dated 15 Apr 1823, proved 20 June 1836
Names no wife,
leaves son John, Jr., land in SEQ-S28-T16-R16 (Reading Twp),
leaves gsons Peter, Martin and Jacob Overmier, sons of his dau Barbara, land in EH of NEQ-S28-T15-R16,
leaves gson Solomon Moyer, son of Michael, dec’d, land in NEQ-S5-T16-R16, and to take care of his widowed mother Sally and his sisters, Catherine and Sally,
mentions daus Barbara, Elizabeth, Ann Maria, and Catherine.
Witnesses: Roswell Mills, Adam Klingler, and Edward Keenan

We knew this was the right Solomon because this land was his farm for the rest of his life. So we know his father was Michael who was dec'd by Apr 1823. We know his mother was Sally (Sarah?), but we have very little more of Solomon's parents, as of yet.

John's son John Jr held his land in Reading Twp through the time of the 1846 land ownership atlas, but was gone by 1859, and it seems by 1850. His descendants spread to Sandusky Co OH, then to Crawford Co IL. I think, but cannot yet prove, that Peter OVERMYER, the grandson of John MOYER, went to Tama Co IA.

The early parts of this family are still very sketchy in my mind. It would come as no surprise to find a relationship between John and George, but I think it is going to take someone slogging through the deed and will records in Lancaster, New Lex, and maybe Circleville, to get it sorted out. I have seen that one cannot rely on the Internet accounts of these people. We need the evidence of original records, like this will.

Thank you again for both posts. Several years ago when we considered all this, I thought there were two daughters of Catherine Fry and George Moyer named Catherine. Now you have made it clear that the King brothers, George and Jacob, married Eve and Catherine Moyer who were sisters and daughters of CF and G Moyer.

It is also clear that Eve Moyer was married in 1816 and died before 1820. (Poor George lost his first two wives soon after marriage. In childbirth? TB? Poor guy!)

In a land settlement of the Fry family in 1828, George King is mentioned in a list of the children of Catherine Fry and George Moyer. None of us could figure this out. Jacob King was married to Catherine Fry. ?? And then George later turns out to have a wife named Catherine Moyer. !! No wonder we were confused!

Now it makes perfect sense. There was a Moyer daughter named Eve who had died before 1828 and had been married to George King. Therefore George King had to sign off on the land transfer on behalf of his deceased wife.

Eve may have been born between John in 1792 and Catherine in 1797; there were no other living children born in that space.

I have seen the John Moyer of Perry County mentioned. I wonder if he was a brother or cousin of my George Moyer?

I am still looking for the parents of George, so if anyone reading this is related to John Moyer who died in Perry Co and has info for me, please respond.

Thanks to all!

Landy

What I should have said, but did not, is that I am not 100% certain of the ancestry of the two Catherine MOYERs. I am only sure that there must have been two different ones marrying the KING brothers. I think that the Catherine who was not the daughter of George & Catherine (FRY), was the daughter of John MOYER of Perry Co OH who left an 1836 will.

Sorting out the MOYER families of early Fairfield/Perry/Pickaway Counties is a real challenge. I wish I were still living in that area to work on it.

At first I thought this article was referring to Johann Peter's son, Peter, who died just eight years before the article was printed. However, Peter's own family is far down on this list. If the article is instead referring to Johann Peter, then why are they looking for heirs to his land in 1865, thirty-seven years after his death?

I have attached an annotated copy of the notice, highlighting the various families.

I identified all of the family groupings except the last three names: Sarah, Sylvania, and Susan Moyer. Anyone know who they are?

Also, I don't yet know who Morton Goldner is, nor the individual identified as "_____ Roosevelt."

-Mike
OK, coming at this problem from the KING side (my wife is a descendant), namely the family of John Christian KING, early German minister in Perry Co OH, we have a family tree begun by Mrs. Dieffenbaugh of Akron OH back in the early part of the 20th century. She joined the DAR on the basis of John Christian KING's contribution to the Rev. War. My wife and I received a copy of her work in the 1970's when we began our own research. We have been able to confirm most all of her work.

That tree shows among the several children of John Christian and his wife Anna Catherine two sons George and Jacob), both named in John C's 1823 Perry Co will. George (1789-1863) m1 1811 in Pickaway Co OH, Hetty HOPKINS, he m2 in Fairfield Co OH, 25 Apr 1816 Eve MOYER, dau of George & Catherine (FRY). His brother Jacob (1792-1848) m 9 May 1816, Eve's sister Catherine MOYER. Then on 3 Feb 1820 in Perry Co OH (formed from Fairfield in 1819) George m3 Catherine MOYER. Jacob died in 1848 and his wife Catherine continued to live in Seneca Co OH where she died in 1881. George died in 1863 in Pickaway Co OH and his will names his widow Catherine, who I understand died in Indiana in 1871. So as of, say, 1863 Jacob's widow Catherine (nee MOYER) was living in Pickaway Co, and George's widow Catherine (nee MOYER) was living in Seneca Co OH. So, yes, it appears there were two separate Catherine MOYERs that we need to finally sort out. (Note. however, that just because the name was MOYER at marriage does not assure that MOYER was the maiden name.)

As we can see, there were several MOYERs in the central Ohio area. My wife descends from Solomon (1811-1883) of Perry Co. In case it helps anyone, here is an abstract of the will of John MOYER of Perry Co., an early settler:
Dated 15 Apr 1823, proved 20 June 1836.
No wife named.
Leaves land in SEQ-S26-T16-R16 (Reading Twp) to son John, Jr.; land in E. half of NEQ-S28-T15-R16 to grandsons Peter, Martin & Jacob OVERMIER, sons of his dau Barbara; land in NEQ-S5-T16-R16 to grandson Solomon, son of Michael, dec'd (and he is to take care of his widowed mother Sally and his sisters Catherine & Sally) & goods to (testator's) daughters Barbara, Elizabeth, Ann Maria, and Catherine.

It seems likely that this man was born in the 1750's with six children born 1780's and 1790's.

Hi everyone,

I'm having a strange problem with the birth certificate of William Moyer (who was mentioned in my previous post).
Born March 2nd, 1901.

I believed that William "Willie" Moyer was born in Cleveland, Ohio, but I can find no record of that.

A few days ago, I was using VitalChek.com to search for him, possibly in another county, when I got a hit in Hamilton County Ohio.
Since the fee is over $30, I decided to check with the Hamilton county vital statistics office. I spoke with someone on the phone there and they say that they can't find William Moyer.

I contacted VitalChek and they basically told me that they can't help me.

I don't want to send in money for nothing, but I'm not sure what to do. I live in Florida, so I can't just drop by the office and speak to someone in person.

Anyone have any ideas?

William "Willie" Joseph Moyer, Adopted son, or grandson?

Hi,

While searching the census records, my grandfather (Willie Moyer) is listed on the 1910 census in Cleveland, Ohio as an adopted son. He was 9 years old in 1910.

I have hit nothing but dead ends looking for further informaton concerning his adoption. Apparently, many of the counties have all of the adoption records sealed, even though every one involved has been dead for over 50 years - which seems ridiculous.

When pulling up the record (not the image), he is listed as 'Grandson', and then [Adopted Son].

Am I missing something that shows that he is the grandson?
If so, maybe I could stop the fruitless search concerning his adoption.

Could someone with more experience have a look at the 1910 census for Cleveland, Ohio and tell me if it's a typo?
