Hi Keith
I have been doing some digging and the two families are unrelated. At the moment I do not think that your wife's family are related to the Charles b.1822 in Northumberland.

I have found your William on the 1911 census with Martha and John James in Lancaster. They are there in 1901 and 1891 as well. In all instances, William is listed as being born in Lancaster.

Searching on Williams born about the right time in Lancaster on previous census records brings up William (Muckel) with father James and mother Elizabeth in the 1881 census and William Muckell with the same parents in 1871.

I can't find anything for 1861, but there is a James Muckle of about the right age and birthplace in the 1851 census with a father John and mother Isabella in Blackburn.

To make sure, I would suggest that you get the marriage certificate for William and Martha as that will show the name of the fathers. You can serach for the references on http://www.freebmd.org.uk/. There's also a reference there to a William Muckel birth in 1873 in Lancaster and this will show the mother too.

Regards

Hi Keith

I think that we have two different William John Muckles.

I have the 1911 census which has my William John in it, and my grandfather Thomas b.1898. Wiliam is married to Hannah (Herriot), was born in Houghton le Spring in 1975 and is a plumber.

I have traced his lineage back through census records and BMD certificates through to Chatton, and the Charles mentioned in the original post.

Perhaps we could continue to get to the bottom of it by email and share evidence - my email is williams.tracy.j@talk21.com

Regards

Hi Kevin
I too am decended from this line and have loads of information on the Muckles.

This branch mainly came from Chatton in Northumberland, William's father was Thomas b. abt 1787 died and buried in Chatton churchyard.

From Thomas b.1842, my family is William John b.1875, Thomas b. 1898, and my father Thomas.

The Muckles were stonemasons, Thomas (1842) moved from Chatton to Cullercoats, probably following where the work was. His wife was Elizabeth Heslop from Chester le Street.

I think that you can message me from the site and we can share what we have.

Tracy

I am wondering if anyone has been able to track down their parents and their place of birth.
I am unable to go further back although one researcher believes they came from Scotland. I have no proof of this. Thanking you in advance.

Mary

Would love contact from people from this line. I am a descendant of Thomas Muckle Campbell and Mary Ann Reid.

Thank you for your reply. My Email is pwhanny@gmail.com. I certainly would like copies of the stones. I was planning to stop at the cemetary the next time I was in then Pittsburgh area as my son and daughter still live in Allegeny County.

I discovered today that John and Mary were married in Allegeny County, PA on Jan. 22, 1835 by a Dr. Presley.
I have been able to find out more about John and Mary than I have about Samuel, his son, who was my Great Grandfather.

I have not been able to track John beyound his birth, which was recorded in different records as between 1811 and 1813. I also have picked up on different records that his birth place was in Ireland, Scotland and one reference in England.

Because of the death of my father's parents while he was a young child the family was seperated and contact with his brothers was very limited until late in their lives. This makes it harder for me to track family history as I don't have as much direct family history to rely on. I am in my senior years myself, 68. and have lost all of the older generation, as well as many of the current generation, to question.

Sincerely,

Paul.
We are definitely descended from the same John and Mary Leslie Muckle. I have pics of the tombstones if you would like. John and Mary are buried with their daughter Emaline. She never married and was adult when she died. The stones are very worn and impossible to read from the pics. My OS crashed and I need to reload my Ancestry to be able to access info to tell you my direct line. If I remember right, I am John's son's Samuel's son John N's daughter Bertha Muckle Cain's son John Cain. If you would like the cemetery pics, contact me off the board and give me your email address. You can reach me at ngray46@aol.com.

I believe that I also have decended from John and Mary Muckle of Old Allegeny. Their oldest son, Samuel Muckle served in the 13th Regt. PA Vol. during the war between the states then became a police officer in Allegeny City, PA. He had a son ,Charles, who had three sons and two daughters by Mary Stuart, his wife. When he passed around 1914 -16 and his wife, my grandmother, passed about 1920, my father was five years old and adopted by his aunt and uncle. His last name was changed to Hanny by adoption in 1935, My father,Joseph, had the two brothers, Charles and Lawarance that survived until about 1964 but the two sisters died in childhood.

I believe I just found where John Muckle , his wife and a daughter are buried. They are in the old Mt. Union Cemetary, 2200 Brighton Rd Pgh. Pa 15212, Div. 1 Section S

My gr grandfather had a brother William Muckle born 1849 and I have his wife's name as Hannah Garreaux. I have 3 children I have found for them who are John L bc 1878, Ada bc 1883, and Albert G bc 1887. That was as far as I got and I haven't pursued the Muckle line farther. This could be our connection. I will look to see if I can find more children for William and Hannah. If they are the same, some time ago I sent you a post going back to my ggg grandfather John Muckle who came from County Down, Ireland.

did you see the articles I attached to the post? Hopefully these are relatives of yours. If you give me your email address, I will let you know what I can find. The birth date is SO important. I really think your anceestors may be related to my gr grandfather. Charleroi was not that big a city and Muckle is not that common a name. I will let you know what I can find.
Nancy
ngray46@aol.com

I would really like to be able to help you and I think it is very possible we are from the same family. I asked you a few questions before and I still don't have enough to help you search. I have your grandfather's name and your grandmother's maiden name. Do you have any idea when he was born? 1888? 1915? 1963? Do you know when your father was born? That could give me an estimated date? You gave me your grandmother's maiden name but do you know her first name? Do you know names of any of their relatives? I think you may be descended from John Muckle born 1811 who imigrated from Ireland. I can't tell until I work your family back. Please email me direct at ngray46@aol.com Could this nespaper pic of a Charles and Harry be on one of your relatives?

I know the Muckle families in Lancaster are not related to my Muckle family in Charleroi. Being that Lancaster was a very German/Dutch settlement area and my Muckle family in Charleroi emigrated from Ireland (Scots/Irish)to Allegheny City/County, PA One or more of the descendents moved to Charleroi.

My grandmother, Marie Muckle b 1894, had a cousin in Charleroi. I remember visiting there in the early 1950s. If I remember correctly, I was sent an obit last year for a retired coach named Muckle. I haven't researched that branch but do have some of the earlier family tree.

If you would give a little info on your grandfather. His name and birth date would help and also the names of his parents or siblings.
ngray46@aol.com

Muckles in Co of Down Northern Ireland

I recently found the census from 1901 of my family in Northern Ireland. 3 girls named Sarah (who married Solomon Green - my great great grandfather), Lizzie, and Annie. Annie and Lizzie lived with Sarah,Solomon, and their children. They lived in the county of Down. I believe the address to be 88 Dunraven Avenue. And they were of the Methodist religion where the rest of the household was Presbyterian. If anyone has any information please contact me. Thanks!

My grandmother, Marie Muckle Cain, was born 1894 and she used to take me to visit relatives in Charleroi around 1950. Do you know James' father's name? I need something to track him back as I don't show him in my data base.
I beleive you are descended from John Muckle b 1811 in Ireland. He sailed out of Belfast Jan 27, 1834. Settled in Allegheny City, PA (now the North Side in Pgh) and married Mary Leslie in 1835.
Do you have any info on James at all? I believe he is probably John's gr grandson.

I am looking for anyone connected to Orah Muckle & Janet Blythe of Scotland. Their two children Archibald and Orr came to the US in 1855 and settled in WV. Archibald was my 3rd great grandfather. I have found Archibalds birth record and found him in the 1841 & 1851 census with his parents, brother Orr and sister Marrion. I have seen other posts where a John Johnston Muckle is also their son and that there possibly were other children. Interested in any info that I can find.

Hello cousin DonnaHard777

A good place to start is the 1901 & 1911 census. Unfortunately the census doesn't show any grandparents or other relatives living with Adam & Rebecca & children.

Your great uncle Edward should be a great source of family history. Ask him to document his memories of your family history

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Carrow...

I think the following are your ancestors:

Residents of a house 23 in Ballycopeland (Carrowdore, Down)

Surname	Forename Age	Sex Relation to head	Religion

Muckle	Adam	37	Male	Head of Family	Presbyterian
Muckle	Rebecca	36	Female	Wife Presbyterian

Years Married	Children Born	Children Living
11 5 5

Muckle	James	9	Male	Son Presbyterian
Muckle	Rose	7	Female	Daughter	Presbyterian
Muckle	John	5	Male	Son Presbyterian
Muckle	Mary	3	Female	Daughter	Presbyterian
Muckle	Madge Female	Daughter	Presbyterian

The 1901 census shows Adam & Rebecca living at house 2 in Ballycopeland (Carrowdore, Down)

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Carrow...

Surname	Forename Age	Sex Relation to head	Religion

Muckle	Adam 27	Male	Head of Family	Presbyterian
Muckle	Rebecca 26	Female	Wife Presbyterian

Muckle	Sarah C 1	Female	Daughter	Presbyterian
Muckle	Maggie Female	Daughter	Presbyterian

You can find a Muckle coat of arms at:

http://www.4crests.com/muckle-coat-of-arms.html

I don't know how genuine this might be as there is big money in selling family crests to gullible people.

All my research indicates that the Muckles were poor farmers who were unlikely to have a family crest of their own.

The original Muckles from Scotland settled around Donaghadee in County Down Nth Ireland.

Try searching for Gawn Muckle or Gawen Muckle who are common ancestors.

TEMPLEPATRIACK, DONAGHADEE, MILLER HILL
GAWEN MUCKLE
Here lieth the body of Gawen Muckle who departed this life April the lth 1783 aged 60 years.

Muckle Name Meaning and History:
English (Northumberland): nickname for a big man, from Middle English muchel ‘big’ (Old English mycel).
Compare Mickle.
German (Mückle; South German Muckle): from a diminutive of Muck ‘gnat’.

ANOTHER VIEW:
This surname of MUCKLE, familiar to the West Midlands was a habitation name from Mucklows Hill, to the West of Birmingham, or from Muckley Corner, near Lichfield in Staffordshire.

Both these names are from the Old English MICEL (large) and HLAW (hill) literally meaning a dweller at a large hill.

The name is also spelt MUCK, MUCKE, MUCKLE and MUTCHELL. Since the dawn of civilisation the need to communicate has been a prime drive of all higher mankind. The more organised the social structure became, the more urgent the need to name places, objects and situations essential to the survival and existence of the social unit.

From this common stem arose the requirements to identify families, tribes and individual members evolving into a pattern in evidence today. In the formation of this history, common usage of customs, trades, locations, patronymic and generic terms were often adopted as surnames. The demands of bureaucracy formally introduced by feudal lords in the 11th century, to define the boundaries and families within their fiefdoms, crystallized the need for personal identification and accountability, and surnames became in general use from this time onwards. The earliest of the name on record appears to be MUKELEY (without surname) who was documented in County Nottingham in the year 1199, and MUCHELOW (without surname) appears in Lincolnshire in 1273.

Most of the European surnames in countries such as England, Scotland and France were formed in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The process had started somewhat earlier and had continued in some places into the 19th century, but the norm is that in the tenth and eleventh centuries people did not have surnames, whereas by the fifteenth century most of the population had acquired a second name. The associated coat of arms is recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884. Registered in Scotland.

Martha Mary Muckle [Davis] [1888 to 1966] is the daughter of James Muckle [1845 to 1933] and Agnes [nee Smilh] of Ballyhay near Donaghadee Co Down Nth Ireland.

The 1901 & 1911 census forms for James & Agnes Muckle are available at:

1911 CENSUS
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Donagh...

and

1901 CENSUS
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Ballyc...

Martha Mary Muckle was 12 yo at the 1901 Census and 22 at the 1911 census.

Samuel Muckle Davis MPS PhC [Pharmaceutical Chemist] appears on the 1911 census form as 1 year old Samuel Sloan. His name was changed to Samuel Muckle Davis in 1919 when Martha Mary Muckle married John William Davis on 29 November 1919.

Samuel Sloan [later Samuel Muckle Davis] is recorded on the census form as "Nephew" by James Muckle but he is actually a grandchild as was Henry Miskelly, son of Agnes Jane Muckle aged 24 yrs. Henry Miskelly died when he was 21] We need a birth certificate for Samuel to determine his real father.

The Sloan family [Hugh & John Sloan] were farmers at Hoggstown near Ballyhay and another branch [Robert John Sloan] were butchers [Fleshers] in Donaghadee in 1910.

There are so many Muckles around Donaghadee with the same first names that the ancestry before James Muckle is difficult to trace back to Gawn / Gawen Muckle who migrated from Scotland.

I am not sure whether Gawn & Gawen Muckle are the same person or father and son.

I found this cemetery inscription for Gawen Muckle's death on 1 April 1783:
TEMPLEPATRIACK, DONAGHADEE, MILLER HILL

GAWEN MUCKLE
Here lieth the body of Gawen Muckle who departed this life April the lth 1783 aged 60 years.

Gawen Muckle was therefore born in 1723.

Gawn Muckle is named in the history of the Millisle Presbyterian church as having a couple of reserved seats in Pew 13 in 1776 as follows:
"19th August, 1776. Sittings let by the Committee to members of the congregation, together with the amounts of Stipend paid quarterly:--
Pew No. 13. Gawn Muckle 2 sittings 0/3/7½

See History of Millisle Presbyterian Congregation:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~econnolly/...

An inscription in the Newtownards cemetery for Thomas Muckle says he is the son of Gawn Muckle
Thomas MUCKLE . Newtownards
Son of Gawn Muckle ;
aged 21 married Mary Anne McKee 15 Jul 1850

If this Thomas Muckle was 21 yo in 1850 he would have been born in 1829. However the inscription for Gawen Muckle says he died on 1 April 1783. This make me think that Gawn Muckle may be the son of Gawen Muckle.

There was another Thomas Muckle who died on 11th July 1839 aged 79 yrs [Born 1769] and is buried in Kircubbin cemetery Co Down.

Samuel Muckle Davis MPS PhC had a chemist shop adjoining his home at 38-42 Main St Kircubbin before moving to Australia in January 1959 on the P&O ship SS ORION with his wife Agnes [nee Reynolds], children John Samuel Davis, Patrick Roy Davis, Mary Clare Davis, Robert Joseph Davis and Samuel's mother Martha Mary Davis [nee Muckle].

In the Kircubbin cemetery there is an inscription for Thomas Muckle as follows:
Erect. by Thomas Muckle of Ballymullen for his son Thomas
who died 4th March 1830 aged 18 yrs.
Also the above Thomas Muckle who died 11th July 1839 aged 79 yrs.
Also his wife Sarah Muckle alias JOHNSTON who died 6th Dec. 1853 aged 78 yrs.

I would be interested in whether anyone can add to the complicated Muckle family history in Co Down prior to James Muckle [1845 to 1933] and his wife Agnes [nee Smith] 1836 to 1936, of Ballyhay near Donaghadee Co Down Nth Ireland. James & Agnes were married at Carrowdore [near Donaghadee] in 1839.

Regards
Roy Davis
