yes, she was born in Blossburg, Pennsylvania, later lived in New York as a young child and then moved toDuBois, Pennsylvania with her family. Her father was a poet and worked for the railroad in DiBois, until his death in 1942.
she had several siblings , some half siblings and step
siblings. her mother was mary ann reay muir. brother,
robert married helen julia close, they lived in New York when they were having their children and later moved to Portland, Oregon and stayed there until their deaths and their children stayed out west. James Muir lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and a brother Douglas Muir was 20 when he passed away. thhere was a sister or two I think one was Marion vere Muir born to her father's second wife Marion wood muir. The reason I am searching for information about my grandmother Agnes Muir is that I have no record in any census or even a birth certificate for her and it is confusing as to who her mother actually was...I am pretty sure it was Mary ann reay Muir.. but would like more info about her in her younger years. she married my grandfather charles james stott in 1909. at that time he lived in Sykesville and she in DuBois. they had just one child, a daughter, my mother , mary ann stott. who first married chambers amos bowser and then my father audley milton stouffer and she settled in Kittanning armstrong county as did my grandparents. any info opn my grandmother or the Muirs or even the stott's would be helpful
thank you very much for your interest and helpful suggestions
susan and Joyce doing the Muir, Stott and Stouffer lines of our family
I recently found out that I am related to Elise Muir, born 1558 Lanarkshire, Scotland. Living in the Smoky Mountains, I already had a few of John Muir's books. I was wondering if possibly I am realted to John Muir (the naturalist). If anyone has any information I would really appreciate it!

thanks

some added information about Agnes Muir Stott
She was born in 1882..some say England others say Pennsylvania
Her father was William N. Muir. He was a poet and also worked for a railroad in DuBois at least from 1909 maybe earlier until the 1930's.
Agnes married Charles who was from Sykesville in 1909.
They had just one child, a daughter, Mary Ann Stott, born June 4, 1910 in DuBois, Pennsylvania.
they were still living in DuBois in 1913.
Charles worked on a railroad bridge sometime in the 1920's in Armstrong county, above Kittanning in Mosgrove. They lived in Kittanning, until their deaths. Agnes passed away in 1939 in a little village called Watersonville, just across the river from another community called Redbank.

she had siblings/ half siblings..one was Douglas Muir who passed away at around age 20-21 in DuBois. also a brother James Wallace Muir and I forget the other's as I don't have info in front of me at this time.
she might have lived in New York as it seems that some relatives lived there in early 1900's. I think in Stuben county, New York, New York
Robert Muir was one person who was here.
thank you so much
susan

I am searching for information about my grandmother Agnes N. Muir who was the daughter of William N. Muir.
Agnes had siblings some named here..
some are half brothers/sisters but in all the census records that I see I do not see her mentioned and do not know who her mother was for sure.
William was married to Mary Anne Reay. some children were:
Robert Reay Muir, and another ?
then his second wife Marion Vere' Wood Muir ahd he had:
james Wallace Muir, Douglas A. Muir, Marion Vere' Muir,
so you see I do not have record of Agnes N. Muir who is my grandmother born to either Mary Anne Reay or Marion Vere. But I have a photo that someone told me that was mary Anne Reay Muir, Agnes N. Muir and William Muir.
anyone out there have any idea where I can find out this information
My mother, Mary Ann Stott used to tell us that there was a step grandmother...but never made any connections because when you are young things like don't register especially since they were all gone by that time!
thanks for any help about this
Re: Where did Muir come from?

There are several theories as to the origin of the name. Literally, it means "of the moors". If you read a history book on Scotland (written by a Scot), you will see the term muir scattered liberally throughout when they discuss moors.

The most ancient version of the name is believed to be O'Mordha, Gaelice for noble or stately. Many believe that the Muirs are decended from the clan of Fergus Mor of Ireland.

The spelling of the name is also partially determined by where the family is from. You may want to check out www.theclanmuir.org or clannmuironline.ning.com. Both offer a lot of information on the Muir background.

I am working on our family tree. Please feel free to take a look at it and see if we fit in with you anywhere. The Muirs tended to recycle names quite a bit.

Cool!! The information I have has largely been obtained through census and BDM data. I have George marrying Josephine Cooke in 1909. They had three kids (George, Mary and Betty). Does that match with what you have?

Hello Dave,

I am doing my family tree and I believe My Great Great grandfather's parents were Samuel and Grace. My Great Grandgfather's Name is George W. Moore born in 1873 in Illinois. The Last name "Muir" was changed when they immigrated to the United states. Because of my G. G. G Grandfather having a very thick Scotish accent they had misunderstood him and spelt it Moore, so they kept it. I do know that they arrived in New York on the Furnessia. I hope this helps. I am still doing the research to confirm the connection. can I ask you how you got this info? Good Luck!!

You are very welcome Cheryl.

It's people like you that fuel the engine of genealogy.

I had a period of illness just over ten years ago that allowed me a lot of time to concentrate on family history. How I wish that the resources available today were in place back then.

I can also understand the demands of a young family (wait till they are in their twenties!) and the added need to focus on two of them must be tiring and probably rewarding at the same time.

As before, kind regards and best wishes from SW Scotland.
Thanks for the kind words Jim. I am slowwwwwwwly getting these up on both Ancestry and Find A Grave. I have little kids two of which have autism so sometimes the going is much slower than I would like. All I can say is keep looking because who knows who I will put up. I took over 1,000 pictures of monument on this trip to Scotland at about 6 different cemeteries. UGH...seemed like a good thought at the time :)

Cheryl

Eileen: Nice to hear from you. I have been rather inactive on the John Muir scene of late, but would be more than willing to swap info. I keep manual records but they are pretty good back to crawfordjohn era of the Muirs in Scotland. So, if you would like to forward what you have, I'd be happy to try to fill in blanks so we can see the tie in to John Muir, Naturalist. I phrase it that way because I have responded to a number of researchers whom insist they are descendants of John Muir, and I generally respond that there are a number of John Muirs from Scotland but few descendants of John Muir the Naturalist. It was a reasonably large family at one time but has dwindled with time. Fire away and I'll see what I can do. I live up here in Reno so do get down to the Muir papers reaonably often. Jim Gaines, email jgainescdr@charter.net for direct contact.

MUIR FAMILY Pratt City, Alabama

I am in need of some help regarding my family history! My name is Shannon Muir Berlin. My great grandparents were Isabele Muir and Gilbert Muir and they resided in Pratt City area of Birmingham, Alabama. They were a childless couple, when sometime in financial distress (1917 - 1918) someone (??) who had multiple children GAVE THE MUIR FAMILY A BABY BOY that they named Robert Herron Muir. This was my grandfather - he never knew he was "adopted". The Muir's raised Robert Muir in a wonderful home with a lot of love and he was a wonderful man who died in 1992; however, I am at a standstill trying to find out the original family name/history of my bloodline. I am hoping someone can help me just figure out my heritage! If you know who may have given this baby boy to the Muir's in Alabama, please let me know! Any leads are appreciated! Thank you!

Re: Joseph Jackson Muir

Do you know other details on him? I am researching the Moore (may have been spelled Muir once upon a time) and Craig Families. James J. Moore, born in PA in 1776, married Jane Craig, daughter of Robert and Katherine "Katy" Craig from Northern Ireland, when they were in Humphreys County, TN along the Duck River. They started their family there before moving to Dallas County, AL around 1819. They had seven children together. These families worshipped and were buried at two cemeteries associated with Prosperity Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (Scotch Covenanter Roots), now located on Church Street in Marion Junction, Dallas County, Alabama. Many of these family members were educated at Erskine College in Due West, SC. Specifically, I am trying to locate James' parents and/or siblings, names unknown. James' middle name, middle initial J., may be Jackson as some of his sons' have Jackson as a middle name. It is said, but never substantiated, that the Moore's came from Northern Ireland to Massachusetts in the late 1700's and the family established homes there, Pennslyvania, and other surrounding states. My guess is his parents, names unknown, settled in PA. Any information or guidance would be much appreciated.
James Muir & Diana Culperson Mystery

I have this very old document that I inherited a while back that records some of my family history on the Muir side. I believe it may have been written down by either my grandmother or my great grandmother (both deceased). It creates a bit of a mystery for me. I can't seem to find Diana Culperson anywhere in Scotland. If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated. The document reads exactly like this:

"Lady Diana Culperson married James Muir, a weaver on her father's estate. Her father was the Earl Culperson. He disinherited her. This was in Scotland.

Diana and James had three children born in Scotland

John
Janot (Janet)
Diane (Dinah) Jane

Diana's health failed & they moved to America to Syracuse New York.

Thomas Born
Margaret
Charlotte (Born April 11, 1845 at Waubano, Ontario) Married James Shaw

Diana died & James Muir married Elizabeth Kipp who cared for the three younger children like a loving mother. She had no Children.

The Muir Estate was in Muircastle Scotland"

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.
