Hello Nancy,
I am researching my Mulhern family especially in WIlkes Barre, PA. One of the people I have come across is Mary Jane Mulhern, who may be related to me somehow. Are you researching this family also. My mother was Ethel Mulherin of Wilkes Barre, she was born on Empire St. My father was a Degnan from Wilkes Barre too. They left and went to N.Y. so I only have feint memories of the place. Would love to exchange info if you are interested.
I do not know about your specific Mulherns. I believe that my great-grandmother, Mary Ellen Mulhern (1855-1924), came from County Roscommon. I believe that she had 3 brothers who also immigrated to the US: Peter (1849-1913), James (1849-); and Bernard (1860-). Their parents were James Mulhern and Mary Cuniff. Mary Ellen was married in Boston but lived in Taunton, MA. Her 2 brothers James and Bernard lived in Boston. I have a ship's record from April 12, 1906 where James is returning to the US after being in Castlerea, County Roscommon, Ireland. I believe that he originally immigrated to the US in 1871.

Looking for information on 5 Mulheran's that emigrated to Australia. They arrived on 24 May 1859 aboard the Sapphire. All of these boys listed Cloughenally, County Donegal as the townland that they were from -- suspect that it was misspelled and should have been Cloughanelly, County Donegal.

Charles, parents John and Sophia
Daniel, parents Owen and Margaret
Hugh, parents Cornelius and Isabella
John, parents Michael and Bridget
John, parents Edward and Maggy.

My gggrandmother was Anne Mulhern b. ca 1810-1813. She married Michael Curran before 1850. One of their son's was born at Muckish, Cloghaneely, County Donegal. Trying to determine if my Anne was part of any of the above families.

Any help would be appreaciated.

Thanks.

Marie

Mulherns--Roscommon to Boston

Martin Quigley and Catherine Mulhern from the Lisbrack/Ballygreggan area of Roscommon had three daughters: Catherine m John Norton (m in Ireland) , Annie m Lawrence Driscoll and Mary m Thomas Murray (both married in Boston) . A John Mulhern and a Martin Mulhern were in the immediate area of Boston and one was married the same day by the same priest as one of the Quigley girls. I think they are cousins. John & Martin's parents were James Mulhern & Margeret ??. I think my Martin Quigley had a brother James and his children came to Boston. Does anyone know about this Mulhern family? Or of any Mulherns in Boston?

Re: Mulhern "Roots"

Hello,This might be of interest - Mulherns in Mayo
1880s-1890s
John Mulhern (born 1832) came from Kennaugh, near Lagherdon and he married Honor Heverine (born 1841). They survived the famine. They married in 1869. Neither could read or write. Peter was 37 and Honor 28. Honor was in the house with Anne (her sister and 5 years younger) and Peter Heverine and they were owners of the farm in Glenhest. At some point after 1869 the farm must have passed to the Mulhern's. Anne stayed in the house helping with 5 children, In total they had 7 children but 2 died and 5 remained according to the 1911 census, Peter (born 1875), Marie (born 1879) and Margaret (born 1886) and ? and ?. In the 1911 census these three could read and write and all three were single and Margaret was possibly living in Cork. At the time of this census Peter was 88 and Honor 77. They were classified as farmers in the census and in 1911 had been married for 42 years. They probably die shortly after this because Peter, their son married in 1916. This generation of John and Honor spoke Irish and English, whereas the next two generations only spoke English.

1920s-30s.
Peter Mulhern (born 1875) m Mary Morrison (from Glenisland) in 1916 (Peter would have been 41). They had 8 children. All grew up on the farm and went through the 1920-30s. The mother died when the children were very young. The two eldest, Paddy Jo and John Willy died when young men. Although the farm was reasonably OK in the early 20s it lasped, like the rest of Ireland, in the 1930s.

After the second world war, the sons and daughters of Peter and Mary all emigrate to either England or America taking advantage of the boom after the 50s and 60s. Peter, Mary, Gerry and Ronald, came over to Coventry, England and worked in the car factories, while Bridie and Babs went to America. The farm became unoccupied. This generation emigrated while Ireland was still in a 'previous age' compared to the UK and US -The Museum of Country Life outside Castlebar says that Ireland did not enter the modern world (electricity etc) till the 1950s.

Alan Mulhern

Where in Roscommon were your family. My connection is Annie Mulhern born about 1846-1850 married Patrick McManus and in the 1901 census, Patrick and some children were living (farmer/miner) in Townland of Ballyforan, Barony of Athlone, Civil Parish of Taghboy. Most of the McManus children came to the U.S. and we believe primarily to Cleveland Ohio, first one came (Ellen or Ella) from 1890 to 1911 when Martin came, one of the youngest. Any connection to our Annie Mulhern?
Thanx
Betty Clifton

I am looking for my father's cousin & her name is Mary Sullivan & her last known address was 908 Ashford Street, Brooklyn New York in 1956. Her uncle's name was William Mulhern & he also lived in the Brooklyn area & he died in 1955. William Mulhern was orginally from Donegal in Ireland.
If there is any help or guidance anyone can give me in researching the Mulhern ancestery it would be very much appreciated.

Hi, Mary,
I am researching Mulherrins of Carbon and Luzerne County as part of my Lowery/Sharpe family. My husband's mother was a Lowery and I think that her aunt Mary Sharpe from Summit Hill, Carbon County, PA, was married to a man named Bernard (or Barney) Mulherrin (spelled Mulheron sometimes.) They are in Hazle Township in 1860 as newlyweds and in 1870 they are living in Ebervale, Luzerne County, with their children, Ellie, Patrick, Margaret, Michael, Mary and James.
The Wilkes-Barre City Directories of 1889-1892 has Mary and her children living at 72 North Sherman Street.
In 1900, the Census lists the family as living at 110 North Meade Street and, while Mary is not listed as a widow, there is no evidence of Bernard.
With the spelling of Mulherrin and the location of their home in Wilkes-Barre, I thought Bernard might be related to Dennis and Daniel. Does any of the information I've mentioned sound familiar to you?
Iva Hanlon

Hi, What part of Ireland did your Mulhern come from ? I have a Thomas Mulhern, born 1831, in Drumlimmon, Kiltoghert, Co Leitrim. Many of his children went to USA - so maybe some of his own brothers went there beforehand ? Thomas Mulhern married Catherine Connor in 1854 in Kiltoghert. The Mulhern and Connor families seemed to be close, providing God parents for each other's children.

See ya,

Clive

Agnes EVANS (nee MULHERN)

I am hoping that SKS can assist me, with finding details of a family from Bootle. A chappie I work with, his father-in-law is trying to find his family. Stephen EVANS immigrated to Australia and he desperately wishes to make contact with his family, who he has never known, back in England.

Here is the story so far.

Agnes MULHERN was born in the December quarter of 1889, birth recorded at West Derby (W.Derby 8b 453).

Agnes MULHERN married James EVANS in the June quarter of 1910 (W.Derby 8b 762).

There were a number of children born to James and Agnes EVANS (nee MULHERN), how many is not known, one of the children was Stephen EVANS, born on 28th September 1925 at the family home at 23 Flint Street, Bootle, it appears that Stephen may have been the youngest of the family.

Stephen's father James EVANS was a Foreman - Stevedore. Young Stephen was placed in an Orphanage (at what age I am not sure), the story Stephen has been told, is that his mother died and his father could no longer look after him and that is why he was placed in the Orphanage. Stephen would very much like to find his family in England. The details I have provided come from Stephen EVAN'S birth certificate.

Here's hoping someone can knock down this rickwall for my friend's father-in-law.

Thank you, Regards
Janice
Belrose - Sydney
Dear Marie: a connection is not obvious to me. john b. mulhern was born in leitrim county, ireland. he had 2 brothers william & thomas. one used the surname mulherrin. he immigrated through port huron in 1863. i don't know what path he took from port huron to north dakota. good hunting! --stephanie.
