Hello Nancy
Yes, Margaret's maiden name was McGinnis.
I have 2 Mumford burials I am working with, both are directly related to Margaret.
I am almost 90% completed with James and Margaret's tree for the added burial material I needed.
I am trying to get a bio to go along with each forgotten soul buried in this old cemetery. The Mumfords are almost complete, I am looking right now for data on Major H P Mumford, once I complete that, my entire Mumford research/source will be at www.ancestrybrickwalls.com.
I am adding all forgotten cemeteries at the site so family will realize why and where their ancestors have been all these years undetected.
I will start adding A-G most likely tomorrow-

James and his brothers owned a newspaper for many years-

Not a tease, just trying to finish cemetery so I can get the data I found completed so these souls can be connected back to their true families.

You will be pleased with what I have discovered.
Once I get it on site, I will be adding other old unk cemeteries and will always continue to add to the bio's.

James died in 1850 in OH, Mom and children left State.

Debbie

Did you find what you needed?
I am researching James E. Mumford's tree to complete a cemetery, I found some of his elder people in a long forgotten cemetery.
I am adding data to the cemetery as I go, will be putting it on www.ancestrybrickwalls.com next week.
James wife's name is Margaret of PA., they had 5 boys and 2 girls.

In your query some of the Mumford's mentioned I think are from N.C.. I have tracked James Father and his Father,
I haven't come across a David/Nancy Mumford BUT, I thought I saw a N.C. tree recently David/Nancy were in.

Since your post is 7 yrs old you probably already know all this by now-

I grew up with Shelby Co OH Mumford's but as of yet, have not seen a connection between Shelby Co OH and IL. Mumford's.
Hi, I am looking in the 1870 census for Alabama. My relative is Domun Mumford. I see Cristoff Mumford, Sally Mumford as Farmers and Housekeeper, Ceasar Giles as House Servant. The strange thing is that the others are listed as farmhands and servants and Ceasar (13 yrs. old) is the only Giles there. They are all Black, including Sally and Cristoff. That would have left Cristoff born around 1857. Cristoff was born in North Carolina and moved to Livingston, Alabama. By the Way, I am meeting a dead end trying to locate Domun Mumford's parents. If you know anything, please let me know.

Caesar was born on 25 Jan 1851 in NC according to the 1870 and 1880 US Census and died on 18 Jan 1895 of TB in Denver CO where they had moved to from Boston to improve his health. In the 1880 report and later ones when he was alive, his race was listed as Mulatto.

I am researching Thomas Hebbert BOYKETT born 1805 London, died 1857 Adelaide. He married a Maria SELBY and had a daughter Caroline Selby Boykett born 1835 in London. She married George Selby Mumford born 1838 at St Clements Danes. There are descendants in New Zealand and Canada, none to my knowledge in Australia except one: George Foster born 1834 at Sydney. His mother was Susannah Mumford born 1798 in Thaxted Essex. The whole family seems to have originated in Essex. Anny connections would be appreciated.

He was listed as mulatto in the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census reports. I'd appreciate any clues or information about his birth family, parents and birth place as well status as a slave vs. freeman. Also any information how to pursue birth records in NC would be appreciated.

Re: Charles Mumford, Eva Phillips, Manchester UK

Hi Laura - I have more time now! If our Charles and Eva are the same (a married couple hailing from Manchester), the Eva is the daughter of Gertrude Richardson, aka Clegg, aka Prossor (she goes by all three names depending on the census. I have a picture of Gertrude and letters from her if she is "yours". Gertrude was the second daughter of my gt grandmother Louisa Lavinia Lloyd, b1859 in Lea or Bilston, Staffordshire. Gertude's father was Thomas Lloyd, and her mother was Martha Hughes, b1812 in Oswestry. Louisa Lavinia married a William Richardson, b1841. In 1851 their oldest child Amelia is being nursed in Devon, though I cannot trace Louisa or William. Gertrude was born toward the middle to late 1850s, when Louisa is either widowed or leaves William and hooks up with my gt grandfather Henry Prossor. Hope that helps!

Will

I hope you are still on here and I am already anxiously awaiting your reply. I do not know any information as to Daniel's whereabouts, but Bertha Perkins is my great-grandmother, and Ruby, Dorothy, and Mary are my great aunts, Roy my uncle and and Mary my aunt (who I am very close to). Mary only knows of her father when Bertha mentioned his name only once, introduce with Bertha's maiden name attached as "Daniel Mumford". We had heard the Mumford surname with Roy, Ruby and Dorothy, but was not sure about Mary or Tom. I am interested to find out who Angus and Bobby are, Bertha remarried Donias Evans and had Pauline, Luella, Agnes (my grandmother), Carol, and Donias Evans Jr., and those names I have never heard of. Mary never knew this, and I am more than thrilled to have found this. Any information you can give me would be much appreciated!

-Katie

Re: Mumford and Butler in Vermont

Yes, the names came from the obituary. My husband is a descendant of Elizabeth Mumford Walker through her daughter Eunice who married John Myers.

I'm beginning to think that Elizabeth's father was either a son or a brother to one George or Thomas Mumford, both of whom are mentioned in deed transactions in the early records of Ontario County, New York. There was also a Silas Mumford there. One George Mumford either bought from or sold to a David Cathcart in 1823. Ezra Walker, presumably David's father, also had a deed transaction with David Cathcart in 1844 in Ontario County. Although I don't know who Cathcart was, his name at least ties the surnames of Mumford and Walker together.

Addison County, Vermont seems to be where a lot of Mumfords congregated from 1790 through 1850 -- Robinson Mumford appears in 1790, 1800, 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850. Robinson was born about 1758 in Connecticut. There was also an Elijah Mumford in 1800, 1810, and 1820 in Addison County, who later appears in Hardin County, Kentucky in 1850. Josiah Mumford shows up in 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850 in Addison County. Robinson appears to be the patriarch, so Elijah, Josiah, and possibly one named Noble Mumford were probably his sons. No Nathaniel or George anywhere in Vermont that I could find.

There was a Thomas Mumford who lived in Windham County, Connecticut and also in New London County, Connecticut (1767), as well as a James Mumford.

Kingston, Rhode Island is where a number of Mumfords lived -- William, George, Joseph, and Nathaniel.

The LDS site www.familysearch.org lists a Nathaniel Mumford born about 1765 in Washington County, Rhode Island, son of Simon Ray and Mary Mumford. No further information.

The Ontario County, New York census records list the following Mumfords:

1850 East Bloomfield -- Anson M. Mumford b. 1828 NY and Stephen Mumford b. 1833 NY.

1840 Gorham -- Stephen Mumford and Elijah S. Mumford

1830 Seneca -- Mary Mumford

1820 Seneca -- George Mumford

1820 Italy -- Charles Mumford

I'm leaning toward the Mumfords from Connecticut and Rhode Island as Nathaniel's family, rather than those from Vermont. But nothing has come together yet.

Very frustrating.

Hello,

I realize this is a old conversation but I would like to inquire further. Because your sign-in name has "nolly" and I know that was a unique to my grandfather's aunt's name (who would have been Alfred Mumford's sister) I am responding.

I am seeking to help my family find our Mumford relatives. My mother's maiden name is Mumford. My grandfather was Jesse Mumford from Gieger, AL (1923-1992) to Florence Doublin and Alfred Mumford (aka Lil Anderson). Jesse would be the oldest child of Alfred Mumford.

The history I have on Alfred (Lil Anderson) Mumford is that he was youngest of eight children(Charlie, Leech, Holly (aka Mouth), TommieNolly (only girl...never married...died young), and Yank (was married Viola) & Gun (was married to Agusta (aka Guss) Smoot(twins)of Gieger,AL near Emelle, AL. The eight children's mother was Dinah (my grandmother said she can not remember the father's name). My grandmother says there was another son in who lived in Chicago who got killed young, because his body was bought back to the country (Emelle/Gieger, AL).

Alfred & Florence never married. Alfred retreated from Gieger, AL to Chicago, IL (where other Mumford relatives lived).

Jesse (my grandfather)did marry in Gieger, AL...Ruby Jones (daughter of Nat Jones (aka Son-Mon)and Lillie Brown-Jones. Jesse and Ruby moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1947. At some point they had one interaction with Alfred (Lil Anderson)but no connection since (my grandmother said it was 1956 because my mother was an infant).

We do know there was recent death in the Mumford family (Oct 2010 & Jan 2011) in Birmingham, AL (relations through Yank Mumford).

If this family line sounds familiar or any correlation please contact me direct at shavonnlee@gmail.com. I also have an old photo of Alfred (Lil Anderson) Mumford.

Thank you so much...Shavonn

I really don't know. Some things point to an Eliza Mumford from Modbury, Devon. I haven't been able to find a closer match. Eliza's parents were John & Mary Mumford. I know nothing about them other they were still alive in 1875. A family story is that Eliza had a sister who moved somewhere in Australia. The Modbury, Devon Eliza had a sister who moved there. Does your family have an Australia connection?Do you have an Eliza, John, or Mary Mumford in your line? I know nothing about Eliza's siblings other than she possibly had a brother & I do know a siser but I don't know her sister's name.

Yes, I know some....but, not the paternal side. My husband was the son of a brother of Lola, whose name was Quay. There were 3 children, Quay, Homer, and Lola.
I am not really positive of the married name of Lola. I understand that Juanita and Clara were adopted.....but, never heard what might have happened to their father. Is Juanita still alive? Monty, my husband talked with her some several years ago.....but, he passed away in 2003. So, I have not found her anywhere. I am on a trip right now.....up in DC....I plan to be home Tuesday or Wednesday and will be happy to share information with you. Please respond to me at my address.

I have very little information concerning this gentleman other than he married in or about 1677 Cordelia GEDYE, almost certainly in Cornwall, and probably in Menheniot. Cordelia's father William is a direct ancestor of mine.

Further, I am led to believe that the marriage of Henry and Cordelia produced a number of children, possibly as many as eight, but I have yet to discover their identities.

Any information, however slight, will be much appreciated.
