I have visted the grave of Edarkis Jane Mungo Sellers. She is my great great Grandmother. The wording you have is correct however, The Indian Chief on top has been stolen. I have a picture that I made today. The grave is located near Chesterfield, SC
Any info you have would be greatly appreciated.

the mungo's in flat rock are really from germany and the correct name is manger. mungo is gaelic for beloved so you may have some scottish relatives

I am the daughter of the late Charles Mungo (formerly of Mungo Funeral Home in Lancaster, SC); My father was the son of the late Reverend Ernest Mungo of Flat Creek, South Carolina. My grandfather, Ernest, was the son of Easter Mungo (who died at age 112 in the early 1960s). I am not the family's historian, but there is a cousin who was raised in the area and who is familiar with family history. Do you think that you may be our relative?

They had twins Robert/Mary b1-11-1858
Robert is my GGF. Looking for info on Mary, married? came to US? stayed in Scotland? Did James have any brothers/sisters. Robert immigarated and was naturalized in Sep 1911 in Rhode Island.

You might try contacting the Mungo's you can find today still in SC. I did a yahoo people search and there are 107. You could contact as many as possible with letters and perhaps someone will respond.

African American Mungo in SC

I am seeking info on my ggmother Ella Mungo who m. Anthony Harris. I found them on the 1920 Census. Other info I have received indicates that Ella's mom was Emma. I find my gfather (Lucius Whitaker) and gmother, Minnie (Harris?) on the 1920 census in Flat Creek township in Lancaster. Lucius and Minnie moved to NC prior to the 1930 census. Can anyone expand on this?

I am looking for relatives of Vincenzo Mungo born September 10, 1864 in Cassano allo Ionio, in the province of Calabria, Italy. He married a Maria Pagliaro and had one daughter, Julia, before emigrating to New York. There he had two more daughters, Filomina and Amelia. They lived in Harlem before moving to East 224th Street in the Bronx. I know he had relatives in Cassano, and we hope to visit there in October. I would love to contact them, or any relatives living in the states.

Please,please can you help.I am from a large family with the surname of Mungo residing in Liverpool,England.I notice that Mungo is quite a common name in certain parts of the Carolinas.

My grandad Jack Mungo lived in Liverpool England.He had 3 sons,who all had sons and daughters.
As far as we know,we dont know any other persons outside our immediate family who share our Surname.
We believe my grandads family came from Scotland.
Having looked at a number of websites its clear that there are quite a few people who have some connection with the surname Mungo.Is this because of one common ancestor or family?

I am told by my grandfather that this is our great-great-great granny! I have a picture of her grave. If this is the same, (and I can't see how it wouldn't be), Edarkis Jane Mungo Sellers, here's what the marker says:

EDARKIS JANE MUNGO SELLERS
WIFE OF
JOSEPH B SELLERS
BORN SEPTEMBER 29, 1829
DIED JANUARY 15, 1878

RESTING HERE WITH HER TWO DAUGHTERS

The grave has a large, golden, Indian Chief "looking" on top of the marker and two markers with no writting on either side.

My grandfather wrote that it was near "Cherokee, Carolina".
I was told she was a Cherokee Indian and that's what I'm trying to find out!

Since the time I posted this message, I have been able to find much more information on Michael. Michael was born in 1770 in Kershaw County SC and died 8/28/1863. He was the sun of William Monger (b. 1744 d.1792 in North Carolina. Michael's mother was Patience Smelly.

Michael married Phada Funderburk in Kershaw County, SC. They had 6 children:
Phada (b. 1810)
William F (b. 1813, d. 9/1/1885 in Kershaw County, SC.
Caroline Mungo (b.1826)
Margaret Mungo (b.1828) m. Charles G Gale.
Edarkis Jane Mungo (b. 9/29/1829, d. 1/15/1878) m.
John Mungo (b.1837).

William F married Catherine Murchison. They had 10 children including Columbus Patterson Mungo (b. 8/21/1842)

Edarkis married Joseph B Sellers. They had 4 children.

I have much more information about the descendants of this family and would be happy to share with any other researchers.

Michael Mungo of Kershaw County was my great-great grandfather. His wife was named Phada but I don't know the names of their children. Their son was William (1813 to 1885) and they had a a large family including my grandfather, Columbus Paterson Mungo born in 1842. He fought in the Civil War. After the War he moved to N.C. outside of Charlotte where my father was born. Contact me, maybe we can share more information.

I'm of the Gaskin Family line, looking for Mungo relatives. Here's a little of my Gaskin Family line. This info. taken from the Flat Rock Township - Kershaw Cty Census of 1900 - enumerated on July 2, 1900
g.grandfather, William, b. 12/1858, farmer
g.grandmother, Margaret, b. 9/1867, their children:- James, age 5, Nannie, age 4, Samuel, age 3, and Carrie, age 8 mos. These children are from his second wife. He had a son from the first marriage named Lewis, b. 2/1887. Is there a connection. Does the name Rosa Mungo ring any bells? Thank you.
