Hi,

Thanks for the reply but I have since found that I am not descended from Alexander Munro born 1769 (son of James).

I now believe that my Alexander Munro was actually born in 1763 in the neighboring parish of Urquhart and Logie Wester, son of another James Munro and his wife Margaret Fraser.

It is a while since I looked into your Rev. James Munro and his family. I seem to remember someone from one of the local churches saying that there was a grave for Rev. James Munro in one of the graveyards.

There seems to have been a lot of Munros living in the parishes that made up the Black Isle.

My grgrandmother is also Jessie (Munro) Vaughan. My gr mother is Edna Vaughan, wife of Charles Sierk, all from Ft. Calhoun. The only info I have on Jessie's mother, Margaret is that she was born about 1826 in Glasgow, Scotland, arrived in Canada 1851 and married Hugh in 1853 in Woodstock, Ontario. I've been chasing Hugh's family but unable to locate any earlier info. Would appreciate any information on either Scottish history.

I know this post was from 2006, however I was wondering if you ever found an answer to the year and place Margaret Munro died? She and Hugh were my g g grandpartents. I live in Fort Calhoun NE Their daughter Jessie was my I've found my gg grandfathers grave with his daughter also on the same stone. She apparently died of acute rhumatism at age 19. I've searched for Margaret also. I did not know that she had moved to Omaha until I read your post. Or knew she was living with her son George.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Gail Robinson

George Munro and Isabella Paterson, Rosskeen

I am looking for more information on my ggg grandparents George Munro and Isabella Paterson who lived in Rosskeen, Ross and Cromarty. They married in approx 1849 and had 7 children - David, Alexander, William, Hector, George, Elizabeth and John.
George and Isabella both died from the flu around 1876.
John is my gg grandfather and he moved to Newton in Ayrshire when he was around 20 and married Rebecca Johnstone in 1881. He had 2 sons John and George but sadly died when they were very young. I think he died at sea when his merchant navy ship sunk.
From this and other forums i have found that his brother David married Elizabeth Wilson in 1887 in Dundonald Ayrshire and Alexander emigrated to Australia and then New Zealand and married Mary Maude Brown.

I am struggling to find any other information with regards to Isabella and George's parents and their other children.
If anyone has any information that may help it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Edward 1880, George 1883 and Maud Tabitha Caroline Munro. I found James, Rosamond and Edward in the 1881 census in London. James is listed as a soldier and in 1885 Maud baptismal record has him listed as a policeman. I found George in the policemen’s orphanage in 1891. Any info you can provide on this line would be appreciated.

I have connections to three surnames that you've mentioned. I apologize for not contacting you sooner. My maternal family name is Penno. Peter Penno and Elizabeth Munro married 15 Apr 1779. We know for certain of 4 children, John Penno, Hannah Penno(Woodcock), Nathaniel Penno, and Jeremiah Penno. There are two others that we don't have 100% verification on. Benj. Penno, and William Penno. William married Clarissa Briggs 1 Nov 1808 in Attleboro, MA... I'm not sure this will help at all, but I do have extensive info on the Penno family, as well as other surnames. We haven't been able to get any further past Peter& Elizabeth( Munro)Penno. If you have any information regarding others directly connected to Elizabeth, I'd greatly appreciate it.

That would be a lovely idea.I have no photos of any of the Munros and the only ones I have of grandad start with his marriage.I have Donald Munro's birth date as 22/12/1861 and not 1862.Not that it makes any difference--I can't find him beyond 1871 census either.
Some of my granny Sarah's relatives went to New Zealand and on my father's side some went to Canada so these countries are possibilities to search.
My email address is huskyhendry@googlemail.com if you'd like to use that instead of this site.I have my tree on Genes Reunited .Do you use that site?
Regards Pat

Good to meet you fellow Patricia.Your grandad Samuel and my grandad John must have known each other very well having been brought up together as children, and I have both of them living with James in 1901 census as young men.
A few years ago I visited Skye with my sister Sandra.I had been there several times but she hadn't.I knew Kilmaluag house so we got off the bus there in the pouring rain to show my sister. There was a lady out the front of the house, so I asked if I could take a picture of the house, explaining my interest. It turned out her husband Donald Rankin was descended from Hector, James's son. They were very hospitable to us despite the fact that they were in the middle of lambing and we had a nice chat. They explained that James had rebuilt the house and I brought home a stone from the pile that had been the original in memory of grandad. It was a lovely thought that the house still belonged to descendants of the Munro family.I have all Hector and Flora's children on my tree but not so much the younger generations as you are only allowed to see birth certs over 100 years old.A search in Register House might be in order one day.
I was brought up in Edinburgh but moved to the Borders about six years ago.I was never a city girl at heart

I, too, knew John's father was a ploughman but have no further info.
I should also fill in my interest in the family - Hector and Flora are my great grandparents - my grandfather, Samuel was their youngest - my mother, Flora, was Samuel's eldest.
I spent a lot of my childhood in Inveraray as my father was in the Navy and moved around a lot. However having an English father I moved to England in my teens but my heart is in Scotland like most expatriats
As you will realise my name is Pat(Patricia).

Actually grandad John Fraser had 3 sons born outside marriage.I'm still getting over THAT surprise!
1.John Fraser born 1900 at Camusmore to Jessie MacRaild b1878.She went off to Glasgow with her son and married there.
2.Alexander Fraser b1902 at Clachan Stenscholl to Katie macLean.I think Neil Fraser of BBC is his son
3.John Mackenzie b1903 in Blair Atholl to Isabella Mackenzie of Earlish. Her father was the factor and not pleased ,so Isabella was removed to relatives in Blair Atholl and the baby was kept there until the relatives died and then he came back to Skye.Isabella was a teacher and went to London and married there.
Grandad signed the birth certs. for the first 2 but couldn't for the third.
Grandad was in the Seaforth highlanders 1914-1918 in Caithness and he married my granny there in 1916.She was called Sarah Todd b,1887 born and grew up in Portree. They moved to Glasgow after the war and had 2 daughters, Margaret
b 1920 who only lived for 6 months and Flora (my mother)b 1921. They moved to Peebles shortly after and finally to

Edinburgh about 1935.Grandad died in 1955 and Granny in 1965
The big mystery is who was Grandad's father? His name was also John Fraser and he signed the birth cert. with Jane Munro. He gave his address as Kilninver, occ. Ploughman and Jane had grandad in Oban. In the 1981 census about 5 months after grandad was born , he wasn't there.Dead end!
Regards Pat
I was fortunate enough to talk to an elderly second cousin on Skye - I have not verified all of this and sadly she has now died
John Fraser had two illegitimate sons who were left on Skye -Neil Fraser who worked for the BBC in Glasgow in 1997
Alec Fraser was a schoolmaster in Staffin
John went Edinburgh and got married
His mother Jane married a McKinnon in Oban and they had a son John
It was thought that Jane's granddaughter was Mrs Dawson, The Neuk, Oban
Can you verify any of this and perhaps fill some gaps?
Regards
Pat

hi,
Yes my surname is Hendry. My father's Hendry side of the family were all from Aberdeenshire.I don't have any from Dingwall. My grandad that was related to the Munro's was on my mother's side. His name was John Fraser born 1880 to Jane Munro and a John Fraser who I haven't been able to find. They did not marry and my grandad was left at kilmaluag to be brought up by Hector and Flora and their children. After Hector died he still lived there with James and his family.I wonder if there is any info about who my grandad's father was passed down through the Munros.Jane had my grandad in Oban and then she took him back to her parents

My Munro research has been based mostly on census and scottish registry.Hector Munro was my great great grandfather and my grandad John was his first grandchild born to Hector's eldest daughter Jane.I knew 2 of his sons went to SA and Hugh was one.The others that 'disappeared' were John and Donald.I came across a newpaper on the Ambaile website ,The Clarion of Skye that mentioned in the april 1953 issue that Donald Munro of Kilmaluag had built the town hall in Pretoria and assumed from that that he was the other son in SA.If you have better info that it was actually John(Ian) then I guess Donald is still an unknown.I don't anything about the SA side of the family.Sorry if I raised your hopes.
Regards Pat

Hi Hilary,

I am a descendant on William and Christian's daughter Christina (Christian) - Christina Munro Paton (my great great grandmother). Christina Munro married George Paton and two of their sons, William Munro Paton (my great grandfather) and George Paton emigrated to NZ in 1878/1880. They settled close to their uncles James Roberston Munro and Richard Munro (Christina and Williams sons, Christina Munro Paton's brothers) who had come to NZ in 1862).

Would love to have some your material. I have a copy of Christian/Christin Munro's will and have visited her grave (most recently a few weeks ago) in Cumbernauld.

Mark Paton

I haven't been actively researching for about 7 yrs now, but am happy to share any info I have on Alexander. I'm not sure I have photos of Alexander or Jemima, but am pretty sure I have one of Lilla, their daughter and my great-grandmother.

Please email: nicoletebbutt at yahoo.com
(I have since married and now have a different last name than in 2000)
