Re John Munt. I'm trying to gather information on my Grandfather Charles William Munt. All the information I have is he was born around 1902 in Hertfordshire. He ran away from home when he was about 15. I think his father may have been Charles Joseph Munt and mother Clara Dollin and siblings were John Edward and Elsie? Do you have any information that may help?

I am John Bryant, no relation, but have been doing research for my cousin Betty Merle Ellen Munt now Cowie in Southport Queensland Australia. I have just caught up on the Munt message board on ancestry. I am related to Betty on the Cowie side.

I have Betty back through Marcus George Munt b 1887 Laidley Queensland to James Munt b 1860 Wheatley to William Munt b 1826 Wheatley to James Munt b 6 Jun 1784 Littleworth to Isaac Munt b 1738 Wheatley etc. I think the towns are correct as I did a double check.

One of the brothers of James Munt b 6 June 1784 was George Munt b 13 Feb 1780 Cuddeston. The children of Isaac Munt and Elizabeth Bradbury that I have are Henry b 1765, Emlin b 1766, Ann b 1770, Mary b 1771, Isaac b 1775, George b 1780, and James b 1784.

I do believe that this George b 1780 is the same one that you have mentioned in your messages on Ancestry that is a brother to my James. I have a vast list of Munt off line going to Thomas Munt b abt 1500 d abt 1554 married to a Margaret which I could send as a PDF. Are you maybe able to help me fill in some missing bits?

Reply to fj.ge@uq.net.au
Sorry to be so long looking here. I have recently started on the Munt family for my cousin Betty Merle Ellen Munt (Cowie). Her parents were Marcus George Muny b 1887 Laidley d 1956 Southport m 1911 Wilhemia Carlson b 1889 d 1962 Brisbane.
A lot of the ancestors were from the Laidley area with some from Ipswich. They go back to Wheatley Oxfordshire.
The names that you have mentioned do not appear on the lists that I have managed to amass but may be somewhere there where I have not looked yet. If you think we may be on the same line of thought please contact me.

Sorry! I have not been monitoring message boards. My fault entirely. Finally Ancestry sent me an email through their interconnection service today for you and one other doing research on this family. I have been sort of fishing in dark myself but some time ago came accross parish register that linked Joseph Daniel Munt to Martha Priest & John Munt. Yes I have linked your William Hogsflesh to Jane Munt daughter of John Munt & Eliz Fenley back a gen to George Munt who I have taken to be a brother to Joseph Munt (later Mont) who went to Nova Scotia with military. Discharged in 1830 and married Elizabeth Dingle in Nova Scotia. I am trying to find more info to "firm up" this connection.

Joseph Daniel Munt Cuddesdon Wheatley Oxfordshire Eng

The research for Joseph Mont, by Pamela Ayshford, Genealogical Research, Aylesbury, Bucks England began with a check of indexes WO97 (Soldiers Records) and WO120 (??) at the Public Records office.

A Joseph Mont was located as a member of the 4th Foot Regiment, however, he was discharged in 1817 with a wound obtained at Washington, (??) after 3.5 years service. At that time he was 26 and was born at Watlington, Oxfordshire. While the name was correct, the regiment was not. A search of the Musters for the 95th Rifles, at the time of Waterloo (WO12/9525) and a Pte James Mount was located.

Further research indicates later musters refer to him as Joseph rather than James and we confirm he served at Waterloo. As he didn't receive a pension, his soldiers' documents were not kept, therefore it was necessary to trace his career through the musters of the 95 Foot/Rifle Brigade (WO12/924-9526 & WO12/10054-10064).

He enlisted, a volunteer from Oxford (militia ?) on Dec 14, 1813. He served at Waterloo and remained a Pte until Jan 7, 1823 when he made Corporal and a Sergeant on April 6, 1825. (This was the time period when the Regiment was posted to Canada).

The Waterloo Medal Roll (WO 100/B15) page 212 #49, lists a Joseph Mount, therefore it is suggested the "James" of June 15, 1815 was a clerical error. Parish records for Cuddesdon and Wheatley, Oxfordshire at the SOG Library, under Baptisms from 1785-1800 has the following entries:

13 Feb 1791, Joseph natural son of John Munt and Martha Whitmill of Littleworth (this is not our man as this person died in his first year).

31 March 1793 Joseph natural son of John Munt and Martha Priest of Wheatley and a brother

17 March 1799, George ---ditto

When Joseph enlisted in the 95th Regiment, his name was given as Munt and later altered to Mount, which the researcher expects was the Oxfordshire accent. She was unable to locate a burial or marriage for him in the Parish Registers, therefore we assume he is our man.

We then confirmed Joseph Mount was in Halifax with the Rifle Brigade, at least by December 1828 - September 1829 and possibly earlier. When the regiment moved to Fredericton NB in October 1829, Joseph was part of a detachment posted to St John NB until his discharge there in November 24, 1830.

It appears that during this period, Joseph ran into problems (which we are unable to clarify) as he was reduced to Corporal June 03, 18927 and to PTE. May 6, 1827 and was finally given a "Free Discharge" November 24, 1830 with a gratuity of 27 7 shillings (1.5 years pay) after 17 years of military service.

Prior to 1871, soldiers enlisted for 21 years, until disabled by wounds or old age, otherwise you had to purchase your discharge. When you consider this, why was he given a "Free Discharge" after 17 years. Let us be a little romantic and suggest Joseph had met a "Bonnie" lass from Scotland in Halifax; he had no wish to remain in the army and this was a way out. What the truth is, we may never know.

While the musters do not give any personal information about Joseph, Casualty Returns (WO25/2175) show he was born in Wheatley, which seems to confirm he is our man.

Joseph was married to Elizabeth Margaret Dingle July 9, 1832 at Brunswick Street Methodist Church in Halifax NOva Scotia Canada. His biography states he was born in 1787 (rather than 1793) in Oxfordshire. He died in his 79th year, Sept 2, 1866, leaving a widow and 12 children. The deceased served with the 1st Royal Battalion Rifles and was engaged on the field at Waterloo, perhaps the last Waterloo veteran in the province (Reel 8103).

In the earlier church records, the family name was listed as both Mont and Mount, and now it appears the correct spelling is Munt.

We know Joseph had at least a brother, George, who was married. Did he have children and are there descendants now living in England? …….Hope to clarify.

I have just seen your posting and part of it fits in with our family tree. George Munt who married Ann Jones in 1819 is a direct ancestor of my husband, but I don't think George is the same one that you have as being born 1799. Our George was born 1780 and his parents were Isaac munt and Elizabeth Bradbury. George was 39 when he married Ann Jones who was only 21 and his second wife.I have quite a lot of info going back to 1500 so if I can help please let me know. Kind regards Linda Munt

Hi,

I have been trying to trace my own MUNT ancestors beginning with Rachel MUNT (Wheathampstead) who was the daughter of George MUNT and Catherine QUICK. So far I believe this George to be the one baptised in Hatfield 23/9/1770 to Richard MUNT and Susannah (WREN). I have located a Richard MUNT baptised in Hatfield 1747 to a Richard/Ann. I'm a little unsure if this is the right one. I also cannot find George or Catherine's burial. Any ideas?

Hello Chris,
Thank you for your message, I am from the Weston branch of the Munts but have researched all the Munts in England. George who married Susannah in Brentford in 1858 is part of my Wheathampstead Munts and am happy to send you what I have. It is written in Microsoft `Word' so should be easy to follow with each generation in a different colour code.
All I would ask is any info that may be incorrect or missing so it can be corrected and fill in any additional family that may be missing. It was started in 1993 so and continues when time allows, its a bit easier with the internet now as trips to London and Kew were very long days knocking on St. Catherines House records office at 9am and not leaving until throwout.
If you can contact me on davecath@hotmail.com I will send you all the info I have on the Wheathampstead Munts with several unattached families that I have linked to the village or area.
George & Susannah had 7 children which one do you come from? I ecently sent detail to a Susan Graham who was linked to George & Susannah are you in contact.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes
David Catherine

Hello Tetleycat, ?
I have the same family line as yourself Thomas c 2.12.1810 the 6th child of William b. abt 1766 & Sarah Ewington m, 4.11.1798 and who married m Maria Faulder. I do not come from your Wheathampstead branch of the Munts but from the Weston Munts just up the road, Mother Florence Gertrude Munt. I have been researching all the Munt families in England since 1993 and have a comprehensive one for yours. I have produced it in Microsoft `word' so it is easier to follow (I hope). If you would like me to send an attachment via an Email address please Email me on davecath@hotmail.com
All I would ask is for any help you can give to fill in the gaps and any incorrect details in the tree.
There is also details of a Christine Pritchard who also links to Thomas & Maria and an address of Roland Edgar Munt. He assisted in his family links, one of 200 written to in the 1990`s, his address would need to be checked.
I look forward to your reply.
David Catherine
My father, James L. Hohenbary, Sr., son of Harry Theodore Hohenbery and Nova (Dively)Hohenbary, later Nova Davis, changed his name in grade school from Hohenbery to Hohenbary -- reasons unknown. I have been unable to find any trace of Harry Hohenbery, but knew him briefly as a child and adored him. That is about all I know of our family. I believe Harry to have relatives in Princeville, Illinois, but know very little about them, having only met a few of the sons of John Hohenbery (I believe John was their father) These contacts were Wayne Hohenbery, Ron Hohenbery, and Ken Hohenbery. By the way, thank you for the information than you have posted.

I also have some sketchy data regarding the descendants.
I am trying to connect this Munt line with a "Mary E.", b. 1825, Baden.
Contact me direct if you prefer so I know if you are still searching.
Roy Schwartz

Have been only recently trying to trace ancestors to generate family tree. My maternal G Father is Ellis Kelly Inselman the husband of Ella Munt. (Ella is the daughter of Fred Munt and Florence Hohenbary). I am the son of Viola Merle Inselman, a daughter of Ellis and Ella and am only aware of the descendants of the Inselmans, but desire to find any traces of the Munt side of the family. Very glad to see that the spelling of Hohenbary is not is not the 5 other versions that I have been told. Please reply if you have an interest.

Hi Linda,

I'm always fascinated to hear about Islington Dilleys so thank you for your email. There might very well be a link between our families but one that isn't immediately apparent. It's funny -- my great grandmother's siblings also included a Florence (Florry) and a George but I suppose they were just popular names back then. My great grandmother's father (Alfred Dilley) moved to Islington from Hitchin, Herts. as a young man. So, most of the Dilleys linked to me are in Hitchin. I have found that several of the other Islington Dilleys originated in Bedfordshire.

Thank you again for responding to my posting.

Best regards,
Hannah

She married an Alfred Dilley (a labourer for the GNR) around 1888 - 1890 and lived at 33 London Street, Islington. Their children included an Alice Sarah Dilley (born 1893). If any of these names ring a bell, let me know!

Best,
Hannah
