I'm sorry but I never met your Grandmother. As a child I remembered being with Uncle Tom Murdock. He had the corner store down from my Grandmother's house. She lived on South Baylis Street. Uncle Tom would tell stories about the "Sandman" and at Halloween he would let each one of us fill a small paper bag with penny candy. Lets see... I remember Aunt Ann, Uncle Tom's sister. She use to sew pretty little dresses for my sister and I.

Did you ever hear any stories about Margaret Mary, who was adopted by the Murdock's? My cousin and I are trying very hard to put some puzzles together concerning her.

Hi Karen,
My original birth-name was Murdock (b.1954 Hartford CT), but I was adopted and it was changed, but:
I'm in the midst of a serious study of the Murdocks of
Nova Scotia; my bunch largely resided in Pictou County, but there are of course SO MANY Murdock's, that it's a LOT to figure out. I figured the best(?) way to tackle it was to make a list of as many Murdock/h's I could find that landed up in Nova Scotia between (about) 1760 and 1820 - oboy... I've got my hands full ... VERY WILLING TO SHARE ANY INFO I CAN WITH YOU IF YOU'RE SERIOUS. My name is Mitch Scharoff, 40 Oliver Rd., Enfield CT 06082, email mscharoff@yahoo.com, phone 860-741-2431.
Just came across your message dated 2000. Are you still looking for information concerning the Murdock's from Baltimore, Maryland? I believe we have a connection. James & Winniford Murdock had several children, as you already mentioned. One of the son's, James B: 1857 D: 1938, married Dorothea B: 1855 D: 1945. My connection to them is this. My Grandmother Emma Brock(her birth name) was adopted by James & Dorothea back in November of 1910. Emma Brock's mother died 3 days after giving birth to her. James & Dorothea changed Emma's name to Margaret Mary Murdock. So James & Winniford Murdock would be my adopted Great Great Grandparents. What kind of information are you looking for?

Re: Joseph Murdock/Moredick (1786-1866)

I am not certain who the father of your Joseph Murdock is, but there is another Joseph Murdock born about 1794 who was the son of William Murdock (1767-1835) and Nancy Birton/Berton/Burton(?) This William Murdock was the son of Joseph Murdock and Mary Tankersley (m. October, 1759). William's siblings were Sally/Sarah, Nelly (probably Eleanor), Jeanny/Jane, John, and Joanna. I have never been able to track William's brother, John - he may have lived in Orange County, Virginia, but I do not have anything positive about him. William's father, Joseph, was the son of Jeremiah Murdock (I think by his first marriage). Jeremiah's marriage to Jane Chapman (nee Taylor?), I believe was his second marriage. They are pretty much my brick walls.

Jeremiah had a brother, John, who lived in Prince George's County, Maryland, but this John did not have a son named Joseph.

There is a theory that John and Jeremiah had another brother, The Reverend George Murdock who also lived in Prince George's County, Virginia.

There is a researcher for your Joseph Murdock named Carl Murdock. I have a post from him about his family which is the family you seek information on, so you may want to look for him to see if he can help you. His post was

"Seems it about time to repost my Murdock line. The earliest that I have proof is that of Joseph Murdock/Moredock born abt 1786 in Va He migrated to eastern Ohio sometime after 1800. He served in War of 1812 with a unit from Monroe county Ohio. Aug 21, 1810 he married Rachiel Moore. There children were Theophilus - Joseph - David - Mary -Abraham - Israel -Thomas-Henry. Rachiel died ca 1825 and Joseph was married second to Elizbeth Van Horn. >From this union were to the following children. Sarah - Lavisia - Pearson - Elijah Winfield.

Around 1850 Joseph and large number of his descendants migrated to Windor twp in Lawrence county, Ohio. Joseph died in 1866 and is buried at old centenary cemetery at Windsor twp."

Hope this helps.

This is the Joseph who was born in Virginia around 1786 and died in Ohio in 1866. There are a few postings/family trees that show his father as Joseph Murdock, born around 1750 in Frederick, VA, and died around 1810 in Bedford, VA, but I don't know how reliable these are. I have also seen a posting that his parents were Capt. Joseph Murdock and Mary Tankersley, but this doesn't seem possible.

Looking for information regarding a George Murdock who lived in the Galveston Texas area between 1915 to 1940 at least. He was affiliated with the Pagoda Bathhouse on the Galveston Island. His Dad's name was also George Murdock. He married his first wife sometime after 1916 and she died in a car accident kinda young, her name possibly maybe "Vecie".
If you have any info on these individuals I would be eternally grateful.

My ggg-grandfather (Jacob Murdock)and wife are listed in the 1900 PA census as being born in Bohemia, as well as their parents and his step-brother. I can't find that being a surname from that area of the world - I thought it was Scottish. Any ideas??

I will have to go back and look at that one again.

Any way it looks like you may have some "cousins" actually working on genealogy. It makes it a lot more fun. I've basically been crossing off those who I'm positive "didn't" have James H.

I was honing in on the men who seemed to have passed earlier than the census I found.

Thanks for your help I'll continue on with B J... and see if I can find anything solid. If not, I think it's safe to assume that he's one of polly's sons who passed on early and Polly raised him up til he got married.

I do not know how much research you have done. Did you try to find Polly or James R. in the 1880 census or 1870 or 1860?

I did look for you and based on the census data, I believe their children were as follows:

Oliver C
Sarah J. L.
Brickhaven? J.
Jas Brown
Mary A
William B
Lucinda O
Nancy T
J. Viola
B. G.
J. O.

1900 > GEORGIA > FULTON > COOKS
Series: T623 Roll: 197 Page: 53B
Surname Given Name Age Sex Race BP State County Locatn
MURDOCK OLIVER C 45	M W	GA GA FULTON COOKS
married 24 years
Has a son whose name may be James H., but he was born Nov, 1874

1900 > GEORGIA > UPSON > 561-MILITIA DIST
Series: T623 Roll: 226 Page: 96B
Surname	GivenName Age	Sex Race BP State County Location
MURDOCK	J BROWN 42	M W	GA GA UPSON	561-MILITIA DIST
married 18 years - not the father of James H, age 18

1900 > GEORGIA > COBB > 845-MILITIA DIST
Series: T623 Roll: 188 Page: 11A
Surname	GivenName Age Sex Race BP State County	Location
MURDOCK	WILLIAM D 39 M W GA GA	COBB	845-MILITIA DIST
(This is only a possibility because of the middle initial "D" and the census records consistently show a "B" but the census taker could have heard wrong.) He is in Cobb County and the parents' birthplaces are correct and the age is correct.
not the father of James H, age 18 in 1900
1900 > GEORGIA > COBB > 1319-MILITIA DIST
Series: T623 Roll: 188 Page: 17A
Surname	GivenName Age Sex Race	BP State County	Location
MURDOCK	BENJAMIN G 32 M W	GA GA COBB	319-MILITIA DIST
married 4 years
listed on the same page as Polly Ann in 1900
The 1900 census which shows Polly Ann shows that she had 10 children and 8 were still living which should mean that 2 were dead and perhaps she lost count when giving the census taker the information.
Again her sons were
Oliver C. born abt 1853-1855 see above
Brickhaven? J. born abt 1857 or 1858 Based on a brief scan of 1880 and 1900 census records, I think he may be one of the ones that died. I could not find anything for him in 1880 and nothing in 1900.
J Brown born abt 1858-1860 see above
William B. born abt 1861 see the William "D" above
B.G. born abt 1871 see above Still he would have been too young to be the father of a child born in 1882.
J.O. born abt 1873 only looked in the 1900 census and I did not find him, but it was not an intensive search. Still he would have been too young to be the father of a child born in 1882.

I did not look for any of the daughters, but then they should not have a son with the last name of Murdock.

Going a little farther, since the James H. listed with Polly Ann in 1900 is 18 that means he was born about 1882.
My best guess is that you should be looking for Brickhaven? J. Murdock.

Good luck!!!

But, I can't figure out who James Henry's dad is.

Source Citation: Year: 1900; Census Place: Post Oak, Cobb, Georgia; Roll: T623_188; Page: 17A; Enumeration District: 29.

I have been looking for the father of Jeremiah Murdock for many years and have not been able to find him. I have posted a transcription of Jeremiah's will and several related family members to the King George County, VA GenWeb archives page. You may want to take a look:

ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/kinggeorge/wills/will...

ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/kinggeorge/wills/will...

and

ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/kinggeorge/wills/will...

To the best of my knowledge, Jeremiah (d. 1752) had two sons, Joseph and John. Jeremiah's son, John (d. 1759), died with no issue. Jeremiah's son, Joseph (d. 1769), had two sons, John and William (d. 1835). I lost tract of this John, but I believe he died before 1804 and I am certain he died before 1810. William had many sons and lived in Virginia until about 1811 when he moved to Kentucky, but there was no William P.

Jeremiah's brother, John, lived in Prince George's County, Maryland. Rev. George Murdock (I still do not know whether he is related to John and Jeremiah) also lived in Prince George's County, Maryland.

There was also another Joseph Murdock who lived in Virginia and had several sons, Elijah, Joseph, and William, probably in the late 1700s - I think Elijah may have been born about 1785 - to give you a time frame, but to the best of my knowledge, he is not related to Jeremiah.

There are also some Murdocks in Monroe County, W VA., formerly Virginia.

I hope this helps.

Hi Robert. My GGGGGrandfather was William P. Murdock b. Jan 17, 1809 in Beaufort, SC, who married Sarah A. Williams. I was wondering if you have found any information on his parents and/or the original immigrants to the USA? We think they came from Scotland to America, but we're unable to verify. Thanks alot!
I have located an Elizabeth Sortore on the 1870 US Census living with her nephew Arthur Sutphen and wife Julia near Reading, OH. She is shown as being 65 and infirm, however, her birth is shown as NY, not NJ.
On the 1880 US Census, she is listed as widowed, born 1804 and keeping house?
Any comments?
