Am tracing Hugh Murray line. Hugh was born in Montreal, Canada about 1840; his parents came to Canada from Ireland. Hugh went to Chicago, Illinois, Cook County as a boy. Married Fannie and had at least 6 children: Mary F. (b.1865) , Robert (b. 1867) Eliza (b. 1869), Hugh (b. 1873), Willie (b. about 1878)and Elenor (baby in 1880). Anyone able to share some information? Would be very much appreciated.

I am looking for Jane Murray born about 1841 Montreal. She married John Arnold who was in the Royal Artillery. Three children born in Montreal, two came to England late 1800s (William and Arthur) with their parents. Jane's father was thought to be a military man but no proof.

I am looking for my father, Charles Murray. I have never met him. He is a bout 77 yrs. old. He was in the military, in Chicago, during the time I was born, in 1958. My mother is Katherine Jean Valentine. I have seen so many messages for the Murray surname. I will keep your information and I will notify you when I come up with something for you. Hoping that maybe you can do the same. Thank-you.

Which part of Ireland did the family come from?

Mr. McNeill,
Thank you for your response. I only know that the Hugh Murray (born in Canada) I am tracing lists both maternal and paternal place of birth in the1880 Chicago census as Ireland. Does this sound familiar to you?
Cary

Hi there,

Than ks for responding.

My grandfather, born circa 1870 was Hugh Murray of Dunurgan, a townland in North Antrim. His father was of the same name, and his father in turn was Charles Murray, also born in the same place. My grandfather had several aunts and uncles who went to the States and, possibly, Canada. All trace of them has unfortunately been lost. I know it's difficult to make connections this far back, but does this ring any bells. Mary Ann was a common family christoan name and on the boys side, Hugh, Charles, James, Neil, Jamie.

Best wishes

Terry

Hi Terry,
Thank you for your response. As much as I'd love to make a connection with your Hugh Murray, I cannot for lack of information. As my ancestor, Hugh Andrew Murray (the first of four of the same name) was born in Montreal, Canada- and I do not even know his father's name (it begins with a "P") I cannot make a connection. However- "P Murray's" father was Hugh, born in Ireland in 1790. Any of your Hugh Murray ancestors born about 1790 in Ireland?

Hi,

Yes, the Dunurgan based group would have been there then and before that the family lived in an area of north Antrim called Loughgeal. They were lifestock shippers to Scotland.

Does that mean anything?

All the best

Terry

I am descended from Hugh A. Murray's younger brother, P.J. (Peter James), who moved to TN around 1870. Their father was named Patrick. My brother has an oil painting of Patrick.

Patrick was born in 1809 in Ireland and died June 5, 1888 in Chicago (I have a copy of his death certificate). I'm still not sure of Patrick's (first/only?) wife's name (Hugh and P.J.'s mother), although the 1880 census did mention that there was an Anne Crosby living with Patrick who was single and his sister-in-law.

Did Hugh stay in the Chicago area? My grandmother (Anna Murray Hughes) used to go back to the Chicago area from TN close to 100 years ago to visit relatives.

I just received a copy of the Notice of Heirship (filed July 28, 1890) for Patrick Murray (1809-1888), which lists the following children:

1st Child - Son: Michael Francis Murray (age 52 years in 1890)
2nd Child - Son: Hugh A. Murray (age 50 in 1890)
3rd Child - Dau: Mary Ann (born 1842 and died 18x4 - x is blank on the Notice)
4th Child - Son: Patrick J. Murray (age 44 in 1890)
5th Child - Son: Edward Murray (died in 1848 at 1 year old)
6th Child - Son: Henry T. Murray (age 41 in 1890)
7th Child - Son: William Thomas Murray (died in 1854 at 3 years old)

It also mentions both of Patrick's wives:
1st wife - Bridget - died in 1854 (7/9/1854 per my personal records)
2nd wife - Mary - died ten years ago (from 1890, i.e. @ 1880)

Son Patrick J. Murray is listed in his father Patrick's will as Patrick J. Murray of Jackson, Tenn. When this son went to TN, he went by Peter James Murray or P.J. Murray, perhaps to downplay his Irish and/or Catholic background. His 1903 will in Jackson TN mentions the estate of his father in Chicago, IL.

There was a P. Murray age 40 in the 1850 census (listed as shoemaker) who had children M, Hugh, and B (P?) as well as daughter Hannah (Anna?). Just bere him in the census list is a Hugh Murray age 60, which may have been his father.
