Hi, I have been getting involved with my heritage much more and I am currently taking a Mexican-American History class at Pasadena City College in California, 20 minutes sough of L.A. Anyhow, I was told by a relative that there is this famous tree related to the great Joaquin Murrieta on Highway 126 between Santa Paula and Fillmore, CA. I was there this passed Thanksgiving and on my way back, we stopped and found it. Unfortunately, the statue or plate is painted over with white paint and you can't even see that this is dedicated to Joaquin Murrieta as a historic figure in the history of California. Behind the concrete plate there is a tree that is slightly hollowed. Joaquin used to leave his correspondence there while he was on the run from the Rangers.
He used this site in a form or way to communicate with his people, La Raza as I would say. Anyhow, it bothers and disappoints me that the City of either Santa Paula or Fillmore have not put any attention towards this vandalism.
Also, there used to be a sign that indicated that this was a historic site, it’s not even there either. People drive by this memorable site and don’t even know the history there. I feel that it’s a form or way to cover up as much Mexican history that the United States can and it should be brought to the attention of the City it pertains to. I told my relative I will do what I can and that we should inform people of this incase we need to petition in order to get this fixed so person’s know that it exist.

We can’t allow for our history to be erased as much as it already has. I took pictures incase you'd like to take a look at them, I can forward them to you via email.

I am glad to have found these communications relating to Joaquin Murrieta and I hope to hear back from anyone related to this man. It would be an honor on my part to meet anyone related to the Murrieta family. I am in the Pasadena/Arcadia area.
Please email me at broncos91744@msn.com since I found this site by luck, but will try to save it.
Hi Carmen,
sorry I read your message only now. I am researching the history of the Golsh family in Vienna, Austria - Adele Golsh married Juan Murrieta in 1873. Are they your ancestors ?
If yes it would be a pleasure for me to give you the details.
Kind regards
Inge
Hi Nicole,

Not sure if this helps, but it's about a sister city to where I live in Southern California. Hope it helps.

Isac

It was magnificent land blessed with verdant open spaces dotted with towering oak trees, sycamores, a valley of rich grasses and natural hot springs. It reminded Esequial Murrieta of his native Spain, so he bought 52,000 acres, fully intending to move his sheep ranching operation here from central California.

But he never did, going back to the Santurtzi area of Spain to marry and turning his holdings over to younger brother Juan, who brought a flock of some 100,000 sheep to the valley. The year was 1873.

And that was the start of something that would grow to be very big.

In 1882, the Southern California Railroad laid tracks linking the valley to its southern transcontinental route. By 1890, Murrieta had experienced its first boom, the population reaching 800, big for those days.

The natural springs that proved a cleansing dip for Juan’s flock later were instrumental in bringing international renown to the community as the Murrieta Hot Springs Resort flourished during the first half of the 1900s.

In 1935, the trains stopped running and the boom Murrieta had been enjoying went bust. The calm lasted for 50 years until a new community sprouted almost overnight and began a period of phenomenal growth. Extending Interstate 15 through the valley was the impetus for building what was at that time extremely affordable housing.
When Murrieta officially became a city on July 1, 1991, it was already home to more than 24,000 residents. Compare that to the 2,200 estimated to have been living here in 1980.

By 2005, more than 85,000 people had moved to the community, making it one of the five largest in Riverside County.

The natural scenic beauty of the area and what is still by California standards reasonably priced housing continues to attract significant numbers of residents and businesses who are finding Murrieta a great place to grow.

Those living in the community find distinguished schools, abundant recreation, excellent medical facilities expanding employment opportunities and one of the lowest crime rates in Southern California.

And entrepreneurs find a market growing larger by the day, above average household incomes, a skilled labor force and a business-friendly city hall.

It’s a community with a past and vision for its future. One that welcomes challenges, takes risks, embraces opportunity.

More and more people are discovering what the Murrieta brothers envisioned more than a century ago: Murrieta is, indeed, a great place to grow.

Hello,

I noticed you mention Xalapa in your posting. Is that where you are located? If so, perhaps we can assist one another with some research? My Pacheco family is from Tanchicuin (near Panuco Veracruz) and most of the chucrh (San Esteban de Panuco) and public records were shipped to Xalapa many years ago.

I thought I'd share with you what I found on a sister city to where I live in Southern CCalifornia.
My great grandmother on my mother's father's side was Maria Murietta Ocana, and she was married to Loreto Rascon. I believe they were both from the Tarachi region (they also lived in Bavispe and Sahuaripa). Her parents were Blas Murrieta and Maria Ocana Bermudez.

Someone named Mario a. Arreola Murrieta from Cd. Obregon just contacted me yesterday and gave me more information about the Murrieta family. His email address is: marreola@matco.com.mx. I hope he doesn't mind me posting it so those of you who want to find out more can.

Sincerely,

Jose Roberto Diaz Rascon
Tucson, Az.

Murrieta in Veracruz, Mexico

There are many Murrietas in Veracruz,Mexico, but can't find the link. My grand-grand father was Marcelino Murrieta Murrieta (in Mexico we use two surnames), the first director of the Military College (Colegio Militar) in Mexico City after the revolution, married to Eustacia Carreto. It seems he had many marriages. Some of his children (with Eustacia) are Alicia, Rosa, Marcelino and Ema. Other sons are Joaquín and David. Most of the descendants live in Mexico City. Can anyone trace the relation between Sonora and Veracruz?

The surname is originaly from Vizcaya, Spain, more precisely from Santurce (Santurtzi, in basque), near Bilbao, in País Vasco (north east of Spain). I am trying to stablish the link to the Americas, but it's no easy. It seems some Murrietas emigrated to Sonora, Mexico by the first third of XVIII century.
