John, I don't know if you are still checking this thread... but just wanted to say that I have a photo of a woman (taken 1890s) on which somebody wrote the following:

Cassie Cecilia Brown-Nadeau
Grandma Brown

I also have an accompanying photo that says it is Henry Delos Brown. It sounds like Cassie may be the same person who later married William James Nadeau. Since you are descended from William James Nadeau's line I thought you might be interested. If you would like a scan of the photos please let me know.

Thank you for your replies and for doing that research in order to reply to my post.

I am finding Josephine to be a difficult ancestor who doesn't want to be found! I have looked up travel information for Josephine and/or Ephrem and found nothing to indicate that they traveled back and forth to the US...which is odd as I would think if she had lived in the US originally that maybe she would travel back to see her family, unless she wasn't from one of the northern states.

I was giving one last effort to see if anyone else has come across Josephine, but may have to do what you suggested and look at family members of Ephrem.

Thank you again for your input.

April

Re: Josephine Nadeau spouse of Ephrem Ovide Roy

I looked at all the bap records for the children of Ephrem Roy and Josephine Nadeau. There are no Nadeau's listed as godparents to any of the children. This can indicate the (her) parents and siblings weren't living in the area. The next step I take is to look at the naming pattern of the children. You can usually count on at least one male being named for his maternal grandfather.

The 1901 and 1911 Canadian Census has Josephine Nadeau born in the US.

That may be true, I suspect she and Ephrem were married in the US (no marriage record found in Quebec).

1901 Census of Canada

Name: Josephine Roy
Gender: Female
Marital Status: Married
Age: 41
Birth Day & Month: 21 Feb
Birth Year: 1860
Birthplace: Eu
Relation to Head of House: Épouse (Wife)
Immigration Year: 1882
Racial or Tribal Origin: Française (French)
Nationality: Canadienne (Canadian)
Religion: Roman Catholic
Province: Quebec
District: Bellechasse
District Number: 141
Sub-District: Saint-Cajetan-d'Armagh
Sub-District Number: B-2

Household Members:
Name Age
Ephrem Roy 44
Josephine Roy 41
Thomas Roy 23
Alfred Roy 12
Marie Louise Roy 10
Joseph Roy 8
Emelia Roy 7
Marilda Roy 3
Ephram Roy 1

========================================================

1891 Census of Canada

Name: Josephine Roy
Gender: Female
Marital Status: Married
Age: 31
Birth Year: abt 1860
Birthplace: Quebec
Relation to Head of House: Épouse (Wife)
Religion: Roman Catholic
French Canadian: Yes
Father's Birth Place: Quebec
Mother's Birth Place: Quebec
Province: Quebec
District Number: 140
District: Bellechasse
Subdistrict: Armagh

Household Members:
Name Age
Ephrem Roy 39
Josephine Roy 31
Thomas Roy 13
Flore Roy 11
Anna Roy 9
Eulali Roy 7
Emma Roy 5
Alphonsine Roy 4
Alfred Roy 2
Marie Roy 3/12

==========================================================

This a tough search, with few clues to be found.

I found one Josephine Nadeau in the 1870 US Census.

1870 United States Federal Census

Name: Josephine Neddo [Josephine Nadeau]
Birth Year: abt 1861
Age in 1870: 9
Birthplace: New York
Home in 1870: Mooers, Clinton, New York
Race: White
Gender: Female

Household Members:
Name Age
Louis Neddo 35
Roda Neddo 32 [Rosalie]
Joseph Neddo 17
Josephine Neddo 9
Dolphine Neddo 8 [Delphine]
Amelia Neddo 6
Louis Neddo 5
Jamery Neddo 3
Emma Neddo 1

This Josephine Nadeau is also listed in the her parent's household in the 1880 Census (New Hampshire), but census data is not gospel. It may be worth researching this family to see if they connect or not. Sometimes you have to go down some dead ends to rule out the possibilities.

I would also research Ephrem's siblings, there might be clues if siblings of his immigrated to the US. They came for the work in the lumber and cotton mills, some stayed, some didn't. It might help figure out just where you might look for a marriage record.
April,

It helps to see what you're seeing.

I reviewed the bap record for Thomas Roy, he was baptized 26 May 1878, Armagh (St-Cajetan), but he was born 28 Feb 1878 according to that record.

It was not at all unusual for French Canadians of this period to have been moving back and forth between the States (NY, VT, NH, MA) and adjacent areas in Quebec. He could have been born in the one of those states, but there's probably no record of it.

I'm posting this for reference.

1881 Census of Canada [Ancestry.com transcription]

Name: Thomas Roy
Gender: Male
Age: 3
Birth Year: 1878
Birthplace: USA
Religion: Catholic
Nationality: Francaise (French)
Province: Quebec
District Number: 45
District: Bellechasse
Sub-District Number: H
Subdistrict: Armagh

Household Members:
Name Age
Ephrene Roy 25
Josephine Roy 20
Thomas Roy 3
Flore Roy 1

I'll have a further look and see what I can find.
Josephine Nadeau spouse of Ephrem Ovide Roy

Hello,

I am looking for any information on Josephine Nadeau (b. abt Feb 1858/9-d. 28 Dec 1939 in Armagh, Quebec, Canada), the spouse of Ephrem Ovide Roy (parents Adolphe and Adelaide Turgeon) married about 1877.

I have an 1881 Census of Canada that lists her birthplace as US, but her nationality as Francaise. Her son Thomas listed on this census also states birthplace in US, but I have his baptismal record from Armagh (St-Cajetan) in Quebec so I am thinking this could be a mistake. I believe future census data states she is from Canada.

I need any information: birth (parents), marriage, even just census information to start.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
April

This is a very old thread, more info can now be found by googling the names.

Here is some info in English: http://www.royandboucher.com/tng/histories/joseph_ossany_nad...

You may also want to read about the "Filles du Roi" or "King's Daughters". Again, googling either will link you to info about who they were.

Many descendants of French Canadian origin can trace their lineage to more than one "Filles du Roi".

Did you ever find out if it was true that Marguerite Abraham was the daughter of a King in St. Eustache, Paris, France?

Sounds pretty interesting. It would be great to add something to liven up my genealogy.

Thanks, Judy

I don't know how old this post is, but I am very interested in any info as Omer was my grandfather. I do know that they came to Minnesota from Manitoba I believe, and that Omer later settled in California. This is where he passed away many years ago and is buried there alongside my grandmother Shirley Nadeau.

Hello...I am replying to a older post - but was wondering if you would be willing to share any information concerning Joseph Mutty. Joseph would be my great-grandfather. Sydney E. Mutty was my grandfather...Bettianne (his daughter) is my mother. She married Charles H. Sinclair. I am very "new" to geneology and you have already done so much research. I am working on a family tree project for my Mom.

Thank you,

Judi Sincliar Summers
judisummers@bellsouth.net
I saw your question from July 21st, then realized you posted two years ago. My sister did a first born geneology about 20 years ago by looking at Church birth and death records. There was Joseph Nadeau that married Marguerite Abraham on September 6, 1665 in Ozanny , France, (County or Parish of Duquet). He was born in 1637 and married sept. 6, 1665. Ozanny translates into Hosanna. In 1653 there was "Le Grande Recue" basically was a recruitment of settlers for New France specifically for Montreal. There was a large recruitment in 1670 of soldiers and the Filles Roi. The Filles du ROI were women given a dowry to come to Neuville France(New France)
