Felix and Jose...
You are both my cousins! Some more digging has turned up that my great-great-grandmother Maria Zertuche de la Fuente was indeed first married to Julio Aureliano Narro Zertuche, who had Virigina, Guadalupe, INES, and Aureliano Jr. And Maria's father, Indalecio Zertuche, was the brother of your great-grandmother, Altagracia, Felix! My PAF relationship calculator has decided we're 3rd cousins, twice removed. :)

I didn't know who his parents were (our shared ancestors), and couldn't find them, so THANK YOU SO MUCH for letting me know. Please contact me at jaihawk@hotmail.com, because I'd love to know more. I also live in San Antonio!

Hi Jose,

Clearly, you have lots of info on Zertuches! I'm looking for information on the Zertuche thread in my family, which I'm excited to find is probably connected to yours. My great-great-grandmother was Maria Zertuche de la Fuente, who became Maria Zertuche Enderle when she married my g-g-grandfather, Baltazar Enderle. On her death certificate, it says she was born in Mexico around 1885 to Indalecio Zertuche and Juana de la Fuente. Family history says that she was married once (and widowed) before she married my g-g-grandfather, to a rich man from Spain whose last name was Narro, with whom she had 4 children. I think 3 of their names may have been Virginia, Guadalupe, and Agnes. Do you have any information about any of this, or Maria's parents or grandparents? I'd be delighted to find any help or connections you can provide.
Thanks!
Jai

Espero que bien. Mi mamá fue a Monclova antes de que muriera mi tía Elena, pero ya no fue al funeral.

Tenemos otros parentescos, por ejemplo que viene por el Cerna pero te lo paso por email sale?

Cudiate, saludos
José Humberto Suárez Villarreal

I met with a couple who are friends with the author of the book on the Narro's & a young lady was there who said she too was a Narro relative. I purchased the book from the hall of records while there with my sister in Saltillo about 2 yrs ago. Problem is all in spanish & some of my family history out of context in it. I am last daughter of Aureliano Narro, married to Veronica Atwood.

Marge

I am wondering if you are the young lady I met while in Saltillo doing some research on the family.

Marge

THANK you so much for the great, newsy reply. Interestingly, in my husband's (Simon, III after his father and grandfather)notes from his conversation with Art, there was a line about a "reunion in Mexico..."

Regarding the Jewish connection...I am a former newspaper reporter, then retired at home to write for children...one of the topics I did research on for a story that I wanted to do was about the "Spanish Jews."

The Jews were expelled from Spain (one of their MANY expulsions thoroughout history) by Isabella I (1451-1504), Queen of Castile, called la Católica ("the Catholic") and her husband Ferdinand of Aragón, known also as Ferdinand V, The Catholic. Isabella and her husband (known together as "the Catholic kings") are remembered for completing the reconquest of Spain from the Moors, for initiating the Inquisition, and for their ruthless expulsion of the Spanish Jews.

I often have told Simon that research will find that he has some Jewish history...btw, you might find this Web site interesting: http://www.sefarad.org/publication/lm/011/texas.html

You mentioned "Blanche." Blanche was the wife of my husband's uncle, Caesar Garza.

We have Xerox copies of a lot of some of the ancestors if you would like to have copies of them.

Btw, way back when I was really doing research, I had email exchange with Margaret Maria Narro...2001...back then, her email was brooklyngb@.....is that your sister in NY?

Do you happen to know relative Linda Looney?

How can we email privately?

Have a great weekend....so nice to hear from you.

Thanks.

Midge

Again, it is so good to hear from you.

Yes those are my siblings: Arthur (Art); Lupe; Veronica (Ronnie name after my mom); Aureliano (Al named after daddy) then me. There is also George in Scotland. Art had said he had been in touch with "Blanche" & yes I too have photos of the family from mexico. Ronnie & I travelled to Saltillo 2 yrs ago & went to hall of records for data. We purchased the book on the Narro's & copied some of the records. Of course all are in spanish so some difficult to translate. My HS spanish was little help. lol Ronnie had gone there mainly for religious gathering & we also attended a service & the Methodist church that supposedly was founded by a Narro & Ronnie was asked to speak @ the service, of course with translator as her spanish is as minimal as mine. It was quite enlightening! The Narro name is well known there & we visited the Agricultural University of Narro which even the Ave. leading to the Univ. is called Narro. We met with A professor @ the Univ. who was able to translate some of the documents. She had recommeded we stop in the school archives & search for more, but @ the time we were there the record room was closed. We also found a cousin who owned a converted Hacienda to a hotel & on the premises was a church. Ronnie thought was a good idea if @ some point we could gahter all the family & have reunion there. Of course that never came to pass. In the phone directory there were a lot of Narro's but the people seemed very hesitant on sharing information.

I also met a couple who knew the author of the Narro family book & while @ their house met a young lady who was also related. I believe she said her mom was a Narro. Yet again reluctancy in revealing information as I presume there hesitation was why these 2 Americans were searching????

We even road through the country side as there is supposedly a Hacienda built in the mountains to replicate the castle in Nyer on the border of Spain & France(that was the Narro's castle). We could not find it & again the people were reluctant to give out information. Oh & I have photo of Simon's marriage as my mom & dad were his witnesses to the wedding. My Knowledge of the family is fragmented since Daddy died weeks after my birth & with his family in Tx. there wasn't much communication after his death. I do recall my mom saying though that Simon was a "card" (funny nice gentleman) & I believe Blanche had plenty of information from Simon but again communications broke down. My siblings relay some stories yet to hear or know 1st hand of daddy's family & my heritage is an aching in my heart. That is why I purchased Kathleen Alcala's books. The 1st book I read was "Spirits of the Ordinary" where it discusses a family who practiced Judism in secrecy & the son was prospector of Gold. In reading her book after that, "The Desert Remembers My Name" she describes how her stories are pieced together from Family story telling & research on the Narro family, as she too is related. In fact this book tells much of the family connection. So if you are interested order her books & see if that enlightens or if things make sense. In this book she mentions (not by name) about my 1/2 brother in Scotland. Also through her book si how I located this site as she mentions it in the book for finding relatives & connecting. I guess we all in some form want to connect & know of our heritage... I am glad that I linked into this site yet @ same time find it adding to my lack of family knowledge & connecting. Yes Art too was in communication with Michael in Calif. who also sent Art again more information (again in spanish) of the family & a photo from a page in some Univ. records of the Narro family crest. Amazing how the family crest has the picture of the Nyer castle & on the four corners of the castle is the jewish star of David. Makes you wonder... or @ least makes me wonder Yet for yrs I had said even though raised catholic felt because Jesus was Jewish we are all Jewish... does that make sense???? Anyway hope to keep in touch this way & maybe help each other on the site connect to our roots & rich heritage. As in the book on the Narro's, even though in spanish, you can see where the Narro;s are influential in the art world; writers; poets; creative people & influential in number of ways (not necessarily monetary influential but inspiring).

Thank you so much for your contact....We've not done any of research on Simon's family in many years....you all are definitely cousins. Arthur Narro, Sr. sent some information back in 1994.

Arthur told us at that time that there was a family history published two years before (1992?) published in Mexico. I am trying to read Simon's handwriting...it is notes rather than an actual word-for-word conversation....so I am not sure what all this means, but you will.

"Margie" (Margaret); "AL" Aureliano; "Ronny" Veronica; Lupe; Arthur.

He said the Narro's came in at New Orleans.

Elias in San Antonio has information. Mike Narro in Oakland, CA. (?)

Again, thanks so much for the connection.

It is very exciting after all these years....I got out our bulging files on Sy's family....I simply must get them organized and put into a scrapbook for safe keeping.

This is for Kathleen Alcala or Midge Garza: I am reading "the desert Remembers My Name" & note referrence to my 1/2 brother in Scotland. I am the youngest daughter of Aureliano Narro & Veronica Atwood. 2 years ago my sister & I travelled to Saltillo to search the hall of records & again find connection to our heritage. We visited the Univ. of Agriculture. Seeing as my dad died weeks after my birth & with the family all in Tx. region, I have no connection to my roots. That is why I am reading Kathleen's books & purchased the book on the Narro family while visiting in Mexico. Found a cousin who owns a hotel not far from the Univ. So any information that can be shared would be great. By the way I do recall my mom speaking of Simon. TY

My grandad owned it, I'm pretty sure. I remember a big black book with the word "Narro" in white text on the top sitting on his bookshelf.

Anyways, I'm a Narro. My Grandad was born in Saltillo, and as far as I know, we trace all the way back to Spain. We only have one boy in our family-My sister and I are going to lose our name with marriage-and I hope he marries and has a lot of little boys.

I was born in Temple, Texas. We moved to Tennessee when I was 7, and have been here ever since. I hope to move back to Texas someday, because no matter how many positive things people tell me about Tennessee, Texas will always be my home.

Take care! Adios!

Please note the address carefully as I typed in the word genealogy incorrectly and so the word is misspelled in the address. Zertuche_geneology@hotmail.com

Darryl,
OK, your post was a few years ago and I have no idea if you still check this, but if you do and you are the Darryl I think you are, HI! Did you used to hang out with the Palm's on Paulina St? Always wondered what happened to some of the neighborhood kids.
Jan
I think I may have found something. Write me and I will tell you more. Or, look under Multiple Ownership Haciendas in any search engine. I remember seeing Zertuche and Narro in the same article. I think it was the University of Arizona Press, Saltillo, 1770-1810 Multiple Ownership. It could be on the ownership of Water on Multiple Ownership Haciendas.
