Hello Paul,

I think the key for you is to find some documentation that would confirm the ancestral village for your grandmother. You mentioned Bobinzi, Poland. Did you see that noted in an "official" document of some sort?

The Hnatiuk family that I'm researching was from Lukovytsia, Ukraine, so there may not be a direct connection between your grandmother and my Hnatiuk family. Let us know if you find something that documents Anastasia's ancestral village.

Cheers,

Richard

Hi,
I found the threads of your discussions interesting. Maybe i might find a needle in this "Hnatiuk" haystack. My Grandmother name is Anastasia (Armastazia) Hnatiuk. I understand she was born in Bobinzi Poland 1887(can't find Bobinzi or name thats close)she died in Ottawa in 1961. May have immigrated into canada around 1903. She was married twice and her first husband died in around 1914 named Brenek? and they had 4 girls. Her second husband (the research of my interest at this time) was name Peter Lystiuk (Leszczuk, Lyszczuk)born 1888 in Rewakowtz, Bukovina, Romania (now Revakivtsi Chernivets'ka oblast, Ukraine)and they had 5 kids together. Both lived most of their lives up in Whitney Ontario. I am told that Anastasia may have had a brother who immigrated out west (Sundown, Manitoba)and his name was Peter Hnatiuk.
Maybe there is a connection and maybe not. If there is, i sure would be interested.
Regards, Paul R Lystiuk

WOW!~* YES! Triumphant yes. Thank-you!

I sent my father, Orest Hnatiuk, whom has been working on the family tree here in Canada for ten years, your link and letter, and he emphatically expressed real interest in this, of course, too!

I would like to cut and paste part of what he said ...

20/04/2011
Reply ▼

Orest Hnatiuk

Hi Very interesting
It seems to have some merit as Bukovina is the “province or area” my dad came from and I understand the Village of Tarashana is about 22 Km’s from the town of Chernivitsi which seems to be the Chernivitsi oblast mentioned below. I do not have any info before my Grandfather Kost Hnatiuk other than he came form Tarahana, Bukovina which is close to Chernivitsi and was married to a Bukatar as shown in the Hnatiuk Family tree I sent you.
I AM ALSO INTERESTED IN ANY INFORMATION YOU FIND HERE

___
Hence... thank-you, we would love to gain access to your branch of the Hnatiuk families 5 generations of records! I will do my homework and see if I can find anything! Like-wise I would be happy to share Canadian info here, too, if it serves you well.
My father went on a 1 month "pilgrimage" across Canada 5 years ago with the sole intention of linking the family tree here in Canada! This was a fascinating journey because he was able to connect with my grandfathers brothers family whom homesteaded in other provinces, and the decendants, in Canada and discover that we were infact related to almost every Hnatiuk and Hnatuik in Canada! Because of this I have found cousins whom I really relate to my own age! Our grandparents were siblings!
With all of this excitement... my father has been unable to make a link with people from Bukovina.
One thing I would like to mention is that my grandfather George Hnatiuk did say we were related to Voladymir Hnatiuk the famous professor. However, we haven't found the tree link, yet. ???

He also mentioned that the "Hnat" name, in etymology, decends from Russian Hnat nobility but also, there is no connection discovered either.

I thought you might find that interesting...?

Ultimately, because my father is a Hnatiuk patriachal son born from a line of Hnatiuk sons... I would like to get his DNA scanned.

My e-mail address is forheavenlysake@hotmail.com

Look forward to sharing!

In Loving Kindness,
Much Goodness!

Georgina Hnatiuk

I am currently going through several LDS microfilms for the research on my Ukrainian families, one of which happens to be Hnatiuk. My g-grandmother Anna Hnatiuk married my g-grandfather Metro (Dmytro) Marchuk in 1882. They emigrated to Canada in 1899 and started homesteading in the Gorlitz, SK area.

Metro and Anna were born and married in the village of Lukovytsia, Bukovina (in what was then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire). Today, Lukovytsia is in the Hlybotskiy raion, Chernivitsi oblast.

The pre-emigration information I have on my branch of the Hnatiuk's spans 5 generations, consisting of birth, marriage and death records from 1840 to 1914. Although the information is limited to Hnatiuk's from one village, I'd be happy to share if you think that there may be a connection.

Regards,

Richard

Dearest Jenny,

My Dad thinks you might be distant family from an earlier line back in Bokovina. However, based on what you have said it seems incongruent with our tree in Canada.

Below is what my father sent me: As maybe in the future we may discover that Kost and your great-grandpa were family there!

Kost Hnatiuk born in Tarashana, Bukovina, Ukraine. Married Parevskevia (or Paraska) Bukatar (maiden name) Not sure of first name spelling.
Came to Canada with family in 1912 (wife died first winter here)disillusioned with Canada returned with son John, to Austria in 1913. Died In 1922, Son John returned to Canada aboutt 1924.

George Hnatiuk was born in Austria on April 27, 1898 and lived in a the town Tarashana, in the province of Bukovina and immigrated to Canada with the whole family in 1912 which is when they all first arrived here.

The whole family moved to Alberta but we not sure where the first winter was spent, (and Paraska mother died) but it seems somewhere around Vegreville, AB. Possibly Two hills, AB which is north of Vegreville, Children were: Peter, Mary , George, Nickolas, (Daisy??) and John- in age order. Not sure of Daisy. And John lived on a farm in Two Hills AB. He went by the name John Hanatuke. This John married Marie Koshman in the 1980's.

George moved to Saskatchewan then homesteaded in Manitoba at Sandy Lake in Dauphin. George was born 1898. Died 1985. However, he has no known children named John.

Many Blessing on your ancestoral journey Jenny.

Perhaps we are family, maybe not. Maybe.

Hence... a native salute...

"All my relations!"

Much Goodness to you,

Georgina

Hi, thanks for your note.
My grandfather John Hnachuk (spelling changed when arrived in Canada was born 1902 Apr 27 in Yuzcnetz, Roumania. His father's name was George Hnachuk (sp?) also born in Roumania, and mother's name Helen Pitzek, also born in Roumania.
By any chance do you know the names of your grandfather's parents? Do you know a date when your grandfather George immigrated to canada with his brothers and parents?, and then when he came back a 2nd time? This is very interesting to me.
Yes, I am aware of the different endings of names with different meanings. I have learned this over the years.
Regards.

My grandfather George Hnatiuk immigrated to Winnipeg. Born 1898. Died in 1985. He was from the Ukraine, moved to Austria then immigarted to Canada with his parents and 2 brothers. They came sometime in the first decade or so of the 1900's, went back to Austria because the mother died here... and then only the 3 sons moved back to Canada. My grandfather had 2 brothers named John and Joseph. In our family Hnatiuk is pronounced as Hnatchuk but spelled Hnatiuk and Hnatuik as well. It is derived from the Hnat family. I believe all the other ending iuk, uik, chuk, iw etc... identified the placement within the family in Ukraine. Hence family members often had the same "Hnat" name with different endings meaning "daughter of" , "Sun of" etc. THis makes it tricky to go back further.
If any of this resonates with you or if you have any questions please connect!

I wonder what your father's father's name was...you only mention his mother's name.
I also have Joseph Natali in my family tree. I don't know where he was born, but I am guessing his year would have been about mid 19th century. He married a Maria Bojko, in her hometown called Kozivka, Tarnopil region of Ukraine. He was Roman Catholic and she was Greek Catholic. They had 3 daughters and one son. One daughter,Anne married a Wasyl Dorosz and emigrated to Canada. And the one son, named Andreas (or Andrew) Bojko travelled to Canada, back and forth, working to make money, then went back home to Ukraine and built a house there. I do not know if any of our Natali line went to the U.S., but would be thrilled to connect with someone there who knows any of these people! Do you think we could have a connection? I would be thrilled to communicate with someone of the Natali line! Please anyone and everyone, do not hesitate to contact me.

Hello!
I also have Natali name in my family tree.
I am looking for Ladislaus Natali and Paulina Kowalska. Both born abt. mid 19th century. She was born in Tarnopil region of Ukraine, village called Kozivka??. I think he came from elsewhere, as my researcher found no other family member living in that village or nearby villages.

They were the parents of Josephus Natali born approx. 1877. Roman Catholic. I do not know of any other siblings, but would sure like to! My researcher found only the marriage of him and Maria Bojko, she was Greek Catholic. They married in her home village Kozivka. She was born abt. 1879. When she was 23 years old she married 25 year old Josephus Natali (Roman Catholic).

I do know more information on that generation of Bojko line, but am now interested in finding Natali line.

Josephus Natali and Maria Bojko had one daughter, Anna Natali. She was my grandmother. She was born 22 Nov 1902 in Kozvika, Ukraine (or Poland at the time???)

My grandmother Anna Natali(k)? married Piotr Lopata (son of Ludwick and Ksenia Winnik) in Kozvika 5 June 1922. She was 21 and he was 24 - Roman Catholic. She was Greek Catholic. Their profession was: labourers for hire according to marriage registration.

My researcher has studied archives at Lviv, Roman Catholic metrical books for Kozivka for 1816-1865, and did not find any entries about Natali family. Which leads him to believe that Ladislaus came from another region, or country. He checked all of the Roman Catholic parishes around Kozivka and found no mention of a Natali family.

But the Kowalski family is well documented. There was mention of a Joseph Kowalski, Petrunelia Kowalska and her brother Albert Kowalski, but he cannot show their relation to Pawlina.

So, if anyone can help me regarding Natali Family I would so very much appreciate it! I am eager to hear from everyone and anyone. Please.

My father-in-law was in the army with a Angelo Natali and he always wanted to know what happen to him. They became friends in Denver Co while stationed there. My father-in-law and mother-in-law rented an apartment or house there and Angelo and a few other's would come over and eat. I believe it was Angelo who taught my mother-in-law how to make spaghetti.

Angelo's father was from Italy and they owned a farm in Pa., anyway my in laws alway thought he was probably killed in the war since they communicated with him after they split up and all of a sudden he quit writing and they never heard from him again. My father-in-law died Nov. 2002, wish I could have found out something for him before he died. His name was Earl C. Wheeland and he was from Texas.

HE CAME FIRST TO CANADA, THEN HE SENT MONEY BACK FOR HER TO COME. SHE CAME IN 1929.
HER FATHER'S NAME WAS YUSHKA NATALI, AND MOTHER'S NAME MARY NATALI. I DO KNOW THAT MARY HAD 3 SISTERS(KATRINA, TATLIA, & ANNE) AND 1 BROTHER(ANDREW). ONE OF THE SISTERS - I THINK KATRINA - HAD ALSO IMMIGRATED TO CANADA. DON'T KNOW WHEN EXACTLY.
Surname....

Get ready...I hope you are of open mind..
What I have to say probably does not have anything to do with your ancestry. Several hundred years ago the Sepharadim Jews were expelled from the area which is now Spain..they then were dispersed throughout Africa, Asia, the Mideterenan region, and eastern Europe..The root of Natal, Natali, etc..may come from the the hebrew "Nata". Again this only a remote possibility. I am researching the origins and it seems that the Natal surname (and some of it's derivatives) goes back for several hundred years.

As long as i know about the past of my surname 'Natali' we got this surname when one of my great-great grandfather migrated from Natal South Africa to Karachi INDIA. (India-before partition) Then after partition some of his desendents came to India. Now we are in Bombay (now Mumbai) India. We are the only Natali as far as i know in Mumbai as per the telephone listed directory.I guess that my great-great grandfather went by the name of Somabhai Natali. We have always been Indians (caste/religion: Gujrati/Hindu) right from the start. Does anyone know of anything who we might have been in SA. I am talking about more than a 100yrs past here, but curious.
Now does this give a new turn to this surname history.
I know of a lot of Natali's now in Surat India who are of different religion. Infact Natali surname is in wide spread in Surat India among Hindus and Muslims. Isn't this something!
