I think I can help you with the "Indian" thing. This has been a discussion point for many years among my in-laws. I can trace this to a Cherokee Indian named Rebecca who was the wife of Abraham Nation somehwere in the mid-1750s.; he is a son of Christopher Nation who was born in 1717. Rebecca was born unknown and died unknown in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. There are no known children from this relationship.
Hope this helps. I can confidently trace the Nation(s) family back to Henry Nation in 1593 in Somerset, England.

Lew Lash, lwl1226@bellsouth.net, Fort Lauderdale.

I do in fact have information on the Nations family back to Henry Nations who was born in 1593 in Somerset, England.
Alan: I note this is an old post, so you may have found whatever information you are looking for by now, or not even be on this board. I am Ed Green's daughter, my grandmother was Eugenead "Jean" Nations Green and the daughter of Lee W. Roy Nations, and Uncle Mize's sister, so would be your aunt. I well remember Uncle Mize from childhood. I have done some extensive research on the Nations family, who were initially called "Nation" in England. I'll be happy to share what I have with you if you are interested.

Take care, Lorinda Green

Hi Sharon - I just now found your note on this message board - guess I don't know how to use it very well. I have quite a bit of information on the Nations family, some great stories and just posted two photos of Lee Nations and his family this afternoon. If you find them attached to Lee, they appear to be a 'story' but they are actually a PDF file that uploaded as a story rather than a photograph. One is Lee and Clemmie and all the children and the other is Lee by himself.

If you get this message, contact me directly at ldg@ellijay.com; much easier I think.

Take care.

Lorinda

She was born in Plainville, Gordon County, Georgia.

Matt Nations' parents were Israel Nations and Virginia Jane Connolly.

My paternal grandmother was Eugenea Nations Green, daughter of Lee R.

I'm looking for information on three men with the surname Nation(s) that served with in Company B, 28th (Thomas') Louisiana Infantry during the Civil War. James A. Nation(s), John M. Nation(s) and Nathaniel (Nat) L Nation(s). Nathaniel is in my family tree but I've been unable to determine who is parents are and thought perhaps the other two men might be related to him. All three enlisted on the same date and were paroled at the end of the war.

Nations, John, Pvt. Co. B, 28th (Thomas') La. Inf. En. March 29, 1862, New Orleans, La. Roll for April 30 to Aug. 31, 1862, Present in camp Hospl. Roll for Sept. and Oct., 1862, Present. Hospl. Cook. Roll to Feb. 28, 1863, Present. Detailed as carpenter, Feb. 21, 1863. On Roll of Prisoners of War, Paroled at Natchitoches, La., June 14, 1865. Res. Natchitoches Par., La.

Nations, James A., Pvt. Co. B, 28th (Thomas') La. Inf. En. March 29, 1862, New Orleans, La. Rolls from April 30, 1862, to Feb. 28, 1863, Present. Federal Rolls of Prisoners of War, Captured and paroled at Vicksburg, Miss., July 4, 1863. On Roll of Prisoners of War, Paroled at Natchitoches, La., June 9, 1865. Res. Natchitoches Par., La.

More Details on Nathaniel L Nations born abt 1839, in Alabama or Mississippi:

I've been unable to find Nat on any census prior to 1880. On the 1880 census Nat states that he was born in Alabama, his father in South Carolina and his mother in Alabama. This is the only census with Nat on it, but in future censuses his son James lists his father’s birth place as Mississippi.

After the Civil War ended, Nat married a woman from Louisiana, name unknown. Must have been prior to, or in, 1865. His son James L. Nations is born in Louisiana in 1866 and his daughter Alice M. is born there on 15 Aug 1868. Shortly after the birth of Alice the family moves to Hunt County, Texas where son Isaac (1870), daughter Erla (1872) and son George W. (1874) are born.

Sometime between 1874-1878 I assume his first wife dies as he marries Nannie J Seals on 20 Aug 1878 in Hunt County. He and Nannie have three more children - Harve (1880), M.O. (1882-female) and Bob (1885). The 1900 census finds Nannie a widow, still living in Hunt County, TX, giving a death range for Nat of 1885-1900. Possibly associated, there is a Mrs. Nannie Nations who marries H.M. Green on 18 Sep 1890 in Hunt County. Why she would be back to using the Nations surname on the 1900 census is a mystery, but if this is her marriage, the death range on Nat drops to 1885-1890. On the 1900 census H.M. Green (b. 1850, Alabama) is living with his daughter and states that he's a widower.

The 1900 census finds Nat's eldest son James L. married and widowed already, his first wife being Louisa J. Rowsey. By 1900 he is married to his 2nd wife, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Dorsey. His sister Alice died 14 Jul 1883 and is buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Campbell, Hunt, Texas. Siblings Isaac, Erla and George W. have disappeared, possibly deceased.

I have tried very hard to find Nat L. Nations on the 1850/60/70 census with no luck. In 1870 he may have been on the move between Louisiana and Texas. On the 1860 census I would guess that he was in Mississippi, or possibly already in Louisiana.

If anyone can help me to solve this mystery, or has suggestions for resources I should search, please let me know.
I just found your message. Gracie Lee was the grandmother of my half-brother, Jack Briscoe. Her son with Charles Lester Briscoe, Jack Briscoe, married my mom (Juanita Baker) about 1954 in Visalia CA. They quickly split-up.

Gracie Lee was born 30 Dec 1909 in Hunt County, Texas. She married three times, maybe four -

Charles Lester Briscoe in 1926
Unknown Huffman (Grace applied for a social security card in 1954 and her name on the application is Grace Huffman)
and she died under the surname Helton. Her date of death was 30 Dec 1995 in Bridgeport, Wise, Texas, USA.

I have information on her parents and other ancestors. Email me at MemorialMusic01@aol.com and I'll share what I have. Please let me know your lineage so I can add you to my family tree.

Bonnie

It has been sometime since I worked on the Nation genealogy but in briefly reviewing my notes it shows that a Samuel Lee,born Talladega County Alabama was appointed guardian on June 6, 1842 for James Nation b-1830, Elizabeth Nation
b-1831 and Anna Nation b-1835. James m Martha Malinda McCay.
Elizabeth m Stephen Franklin Brewer. I believe Anna m Pinkney Eugene Thomas.

I too am interested in this group of orphaned children. Ann was my fathers GGrandmother. He believed that she was Cherokee also. Interesting! I found the info in one of the public family trees that puts John and Sarah as the childrens parents. The problem, I see, is their ages. It appears that a generation is missing....otherwise, Sarah was giving birth in her 50/60's. I have some court documents re: Lee. What was the source for Sarah's appt as guardian. Was that in Talladega,Al or GA? Is Sarah buried in Al? Thanks for any help you can give.

They married in Shelby, KY eiher Sept or Oct 1809 and James was born Shelby, KY 2/8/1810 ("premature" baby?) and there are other possible links to Hezekiah/Rachel but I find no records of James' parents anywhere.
Looking for any information on this man and his family. Here is what I know so far..He was born 02/26/1870, died 05/09/1943. Married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Stewart (maybe Stuart) around 1891. The marriage is listed on the MS Genweb site for Neshoba County. Lizzie was born 12/14/1872, dies 01/21/1940. both are buried in the Mt. Pisgah Cemetray, Winston County, MS. They had a daughter named Fannie, born 1909 and died, supposedly by being struck by lightening, along with her daughter Janice in July of 1948. Does anyone know who Lissie's parents are? I cannot find anything on her and there is no record of Fannie dying.....wouldn't ya' think there would be a newspaper account of something tragic like that?

Anyway, these people are related to someone in Mississippi....help a girl out!
My husband was never around her family (that he remembers). We have several pictures of her that his mother has given us, but none of the extended family. Would love a scan of the picture you have of them on the porch...is that possible or do you have a website for this line? What I posted last time is about all I know. I never met his grandmother (she died before we met) but she really meant a lot to him and is pretty much the only family he has ever known. I know he would be so excited to see an old photo if at all possible.

James Thomas Nations was my grandfather's brother. His parents were James Madison Nations and Susan Ida Nations. They were second cousins. I have a picture of them sitting on a porch with some of the kids around. I haven't worked on the family tree in years, but I do have some information. Do you have any pictures of James Thomas Nations and family? I have tried to get a picture for years but never have. We could exchange information if you like. cecilet@comcast.net
