Does anyone know anything about a possible name change from
Naughton to
Newton?? Our family lore is that the name was changed when the family immigrated in the late 1800's (Chicago area) because of the discrimination against the
Irish. Supposedly if a certain number of letters were kept from the original name, no legal paperwork had to be filed. The family is always listed as being from Ireland on census records, and
Newton is certainly not an
Irish name!! Any info would be greatly appreciated!!
