Naughton/Norton Westernport, New Bedford, Ohio

Hi, I am trying to trace US descendants of the Naughton family from Portacloy, Co. Mayo, Ireland. Two different branches of the family went to USA
...................
A. Thomas Naughton was working in Westernport,Alleghany and placed an ad in the Boston Pilot on 07-21-1860 looking for his brother Michael who was working at Sc,Tunnel Hill,Pickens Dist...................
B. Michael & Mary Naughton lived in Portacloy and 3 of their children went to USA. Bridget Agnes Naughton (b.1884-6)(known in later years as Agnes Norton)arrived in New York 01 June 1913 and immigration papers state she would be staying with her uncle Joseph Jenson, 2840 Wallnut St, Denver. I have not come across the name Jenson before so I think that perhaps an Aunt of Bridget was married to this man.
...................
By 1920 Agnes was living in 52 Locust St., New Bedford, Mass. when her brother Francis Naughton (b.1897) arrived in NY on 24 JUL 1920. By the time the third member of family Nora Naughton (b.1890)arrived on 25 Mar 1921 Frank had moved to 165 Clinton St, New Bedford, Mass. He had moved again by 1923 to 159 Duffy St, New Bedford.
..................
I know Nora married a man called John Donovan. I also know that one of these three had a child called TJ Norton so am assuming that he is Frank's child as we don't think that Agnes married. We also think that some of the family ended up in Ohio.

Hoping someone recognises some of the names. Any help here would be appreciated.

Padraic,

Yes, my grandfather's old cottage is up on the hillside in Glenaun. I was in it this summer. I believe I met your parents who showed me around. I am the grand daughter of Edward Naughton who was the son of Owen Naughton and Ellen Bradley.

Please tell me where my great grandparents are buried. I think they are under simple rocks in Bantrach Cemetery.

I am looking for a picture of any of my grandfather's family - Owen, Barbara, Stephen and where they are buried.

Please say hello to your parents. They were wonderful to us this past summer. My email address is kroghm@aol.com.

I am so glad you answered.

kroghm

Hi

I know where your grand parents are buried, as I was born and raised in Glenaun, I asked my mum and she knew about them, i am not related, as my grand fathers first wife was naughton, but she died and he remarried, so my mums mother was Nee, and that how we came to live there, the old village is still there, the house where they lived.
your distant relations live nearby, someone came over to visit earlier in the year, Ned's daughter i think?
if you need to know more, ill ask my mother, and i can send you some photo's some time, if you want.

Regards
Padraic

Hi Mary
Not sure if I may be of any help as I am fairly new to researching.
I have found a James Elliot (a shoemaker) and Catherine nee Elliot. They had a daughter Margaret Elliot who was born in Ireland around 1810.
Maybe related to your Mary. Its been difficult trying to find out which part of Ireland they came from but will let you know if I uncover anything about Mary.
Cheers Kay (Australia)

I am looking for my grandfather's and grandmother's family in Glenaun, Inveran. My grandfather, Edward, was born in 1888. His parents were Owen Naughton and Ellen Bradley. They had about 9 children. Owen was the oldest. Edward, Mary, Patrick and Martin came to the US in the early 1900s and settled in Massachusetts around Boston.Their last names got changed to Norton.

I am also interested in finding what cemetery a family from this parish would be buried in and what church might have records.

Thanks so much,

kroghm

Her parents were James Fahey and Catherine Naughton (or Norton, etc)

Catherine was born about 1857, James about 1855. I dont know where for either of them. They married before 1886.

Only 2 children that I am aware of, Mary Anne (my GM) and Martin. Both emmigrated to San Francisco in the 1910's

James died tragically 1895-1901 and Catherine remarried before 1901.

John

My gggrandmother was a Naughton from Drum, which is what we would call a village a few miles from Athlone. I have a book called Drum and its Hinterland by the Drum Heritage Group.

They list names on gravestones which are in alphabetical order. Otherwise there is not an index. They list more ways of spelling Naughton than you do -Naghten, Natthin, Nocton, etc. and O'Naughten, etc.

I would be happy to look up someone for you,but I did not see a Matthew Naughton.

Marybeth Gallot

I have just received my GGrandparent's death certificates. On both of them Stephen Naughton was the witness. He was the nephew of Ellen Brennan Murtagh. I also found out that Stephen stayed in the Murtagh home when my Grandparents died. Rose Murtagh Foley asked Stephen to stay at the house for her. Does anyone know of this Naughton Family?
Mary
I have found a card in my late grandmother's belongings which refers to the baptism of a John Mulroy, son of Thomas Mulroy and Mary Carney of Laughtadurkan, in the RC Church in Swineford, Mayo on Dec 18th 1861. The father's brother, Jack Mulroy, and the mother's sister, Sarah Carney, are recorded as godparents. I believe John is my great grandfather who by 1901 was living in Wolverhampton, England with his wife Ellen and daughter Mary Josephine who died later that year. They went on to have John (my late grandfather), Bridie and James. Can anyone shed any more light on this family.

Please email me at "georgegenealogy@frontiernet.net" and we can start sharing some info.

By the way, here is a bit of Thomas' obituary that someone passed along to me, don't know if you've seen this post before.

http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wis...

No, I only found his name on the LDS site with a daughter bridget with the same birthday that she had listed on her marriage application. Her mothers name was listed as Catherine Ward. I am 99% sure they were her parents because of the same birthdate at my ggrandmother.

I am having difficulty (along with everyone else) finding records. I ordered the microfilm records from the LDS but they were to difficult to read. Old and poor quality.

I don't think we match. Thomas Patrick B. 1831 Kilmallock, County Limerick, Ireland Parents:Thomas Patrick Sr Married Catherine Galline. Brothers and sisters were Timothy, Mary(Donahue), and Thomas Patrick Jr. who married Bridget Naughtin(same last name), daughter of Thomas Naughtin and Bridget Hennessey, who had the following kids : Bridget, Thomas, John, Michael, and Mary(Barry). My info shows Thomas Patrick Jr coming to the US 1848 17 yrs old NY>PA>OH>WS(1857). His bride comes from Town of Tipperary, County Tipperary, Ireland. After the death of her father she with her mother and the rest of the kids come to the US( Thomas comes first , the rest then follow). She meets Thomas Patrick at Steubenville,OH and is married 1853. The couple latter move to Mauston WS.

I am searching for the family of Catharine Oates/Oats from Carrowreagh Taughmaconnell Roscommon Ireland. She married John Kilday (Gildea in Ireland) The story is that she later sent for her siblings. they settled in Boston Ma. Catharine was born abt.1835. The property in Ireland was left to my Grandfather John W. Kilday and he turned it over to another relative who was living in the property in about 1944. Previously Ann Oates lived there and she passed in 1926 and one Julia Oates was next in line after John W. Trying to find out who Catharine's parents were.... Jeanne K.

She is no longer with us, nor did I ever meet her, but I'm reasonably sure she was born in Oklahoma. I found one record on this site for a "Jame C. Naughton" that looks like it was transcribed wrong and if so, indicated her step-father was Robert H. Mullen and mother Alice E. Mullen.

I am also interested in any information on any individuals found at kaiserfamilytree.com

Hello
Thanks for your information. My grandfather was Edward Joseph Lennon, born in Drum 1878, died Australia, Mount Morgan 1955. However his parents were Thomas Lennon and Sarah (Naughton) and not Patrick and Winifred Lennon. Also one of my grandfather's children (he had 11) was named Winifred.
It seems that we have the same Edward Joseph Lennon, but his parents don't match. Surely there were not two Edward Joseph Lennon's born around 1878/80 in Drum? Are you sure of your G Grandfather's parents?
Regardless, I am happy to share more details with you.
