Navas - Malaga, Andalucia, Spain

Hola -

Muchisimas gracias.

I have a collection of non-professional photographs taken by a John Navas who was living on Mitchell Place, New York City during the WWII years. He took photos in the mines of California and Utah. I found them in my father's (Ali Mauracher)photo albums.

here is a bit of info I have been able to get with the help of melliot..

I find the following deaths for Navas:
Antuker, no dates, Murphys Protestant Cemetery
Gabriel, 6/30/1860 in CA, 12/4/1898 in Calaveras County. age 38 year, 6 mo. 2 days. Butcher, married. Murphys Protestant Cemetery
Jose A. 6/14/1837 in Chili, 6/20/1913 in San Andreas, CA.
age 76 year, 6 days. Mothers name Marie Martenes, Father Jose Navas. Calaveras County Hospital Cemetery (the hospitals had their own cemeteries but they are no long in existance and all graves have vanished)
Jose Antonio, born in CA, died 11/10/1898 in Calaveras County. Age 27 yr,8mo,28 days. miner, laborer, married. cemetery not listed.
Jose N. 3/1874-4/20/1903 Murphys Protestant Cemetery
Nick, no dates Murphys Protestant Cemetery.

Marriages for Navas:
Calisto to Lena Guerra 10/2/1880 Bk C page 365
Gabriel to Jennie Kirkland 12/14/1879 Bk C page 323
Jennie to Manuel Sylva 9/17/1902 Bk F page 81
May to Jefferson Lewis 11/19/1902 Bk F page 89
Pearl to Heman Childs 7/1/1900 Bk E pafe 578
Joseph to Tillie Perasso 6/17/1894 Bk E page 219

I found no births or divorces for Navas and I also checked the Inks name but found no one with the name of Rosie there either. There are a lot of Inks in the Murphys area still so you may have some relatives still here.

I re-checked the family file at the archives. It says he had 3 wives as follows:
1st wife: name unknown. Had son Calisto born 1859 and son Gabriel born 6/30/1860 with this wife.
2nd wife: Harriet "Antonia", She shows in the 1870 census living as Jose Nuaner Navas's wife with her children from her 1st marriage to James Loomis (James. S. Lumis age 17 and Annie Lumis age 13. spelling of last name is probably wrong and should be Loomis) and Calisto age 12 and Gabriel age 9.

By the 1880 census Jose Nuaner and Antonia Harriet Navas no longer have the Loomis children or Gabriel Navas living with them but have added Antone age 8, Joseph age 7.
Gabriel Navas was married to Jennie Kirkland and lived next door with their baby Teresa 2 months old.
By the 1900 census Joseph Nuaner Navas is married to Amelia Glass, wife # 3. It says they were married 6 years which would be 1894. The county marriage index showed Amelia Glass marrying Joseph Bosse 3/29/1894. This would be the same year she maried Joseph Nuaner Navas. Joseph Nuaner Navas is now 62 and his 3rd wife is 27. It says she has 3 children and they are listed as Joseph R. Navas born 4/1894; Frank Navas born 2/1895 and George "Anthony" Navas born 10/1897.
In the household next door to them lives Jennie Kirkland Navas now a widow (Gabriel died 12/2/1898) working as a servant.
Jennie Kirkland Navas's children live in Murphys with daughter Teresa "Tess" age 20 as head of household and her brother Joseph J. born 12/1881 and sister Pearl born 2/1883 living with her. I don't know where the other child of Jennie and Gabriel Navas was living that year (May Navas) but May married Jefferson Lewis 2 years later on 11/19/1902,
In the house next to Tess Navas and her siblings lived Joseph J. Navas Jr. with his wife Tillie Perraso and their children Eva born 1/1894 and Joseph born 4/1899.
By the 1901 census Joseph Nuaner Navas and his 3rd wife Amelia (this is listed as her second husband in this census and she is listed as his second wife not his third) have their children Frank L. age 13, Tony age 9, Dorothy M. age 3 and Norma age 10 months living with them.
The 1880 census shows a family listed as "Orneta' living in Murphys. The father is Charles born in Italy in 1835 and his four children Delila born in 1875, Frank born in 1870, Frederick born in 1872 and Rosa born in 1866. This spelling of their last name is surely wrong and should be Oneto. I think the daughter Delila is the Lida Oneto that married James Inks. Also when Rosa Oneto died it said she was survived by 2 brothers and a sister which matches this family. If I am correct and Delila Orneta was actually Lida Oneto who married James Inks then this may have been your mother whose maiden name was Inks and who you believe was Rosa Oneto's sister.

Also search under Navas in Calaveras County for more information..I hope this helps..I hope you might have some more information.
