It seems like I should be connected to this family. Maybe someone can find the link. My ancester William R Nave was born in Hamilton Co TN in 1845. I have not found him in a census until 1880 when he is in Crawfish Springs, Walker Co GA. He was married to Catherine Davis, born in 1850 in Walker Co GA. Wiiliam seems to be in all the right places to be related to Alexander and Henry. Can anyone help me make a connection?

First a correction to what I previously replied:
I wrote: Alexander Nave was Asst Wagon Master of 745 persons left Cherokee Nation 31 Oct ""1839"" arrived 3 March 1739. The first date of the removal should be 31 Oct 1838 not 1839.

It would likely mean Mary Vann was Chickamauga Cherokee. Families lived in Walker Co., GA I believe near Crawfish Springs.

Looking at the 1900 US Census, Special Section, we can determine from Mary Nave Chamber's answers that she was 1/4th Cherokee. Alexander Nave would therefor have been all white and and his wife Mary Vann 1/2 Cherokee making daugher 1/4th Cherokee blood.

1900 US Census, Indian Terr, Cherokee, Flint Twp.
NARA Series T623; Roll 1846; Page 253
Chambers, Mary age 66, Race I, born GA
Living in Flint Twp.10, N. Range 23 East; Enumerated 1 June 1900
Born Feb 1834 Georgia; both parents born in GA.
Widow, 1 child and 1 child living in 1900; educated

From Special Inquries Schedule to the 1900 US Census
Other name if any: Kahocha
Tribe: Cherokee
Father: White Mother Cherokee; Blood mix: 1/4 white blood
Living in a fixed dwelling and next door to a Jesse Harmon and wife Nancy who may be related, I don't know.

So Alexander Nave was not Cherokee.

I will look for your other thread

Mary Nave daughter of Mary Ga-Ho-Ga Vann & Alexander Nave

O'Siyo! I am looking into my 3rd great-grandmother and was wondering if anyone had any more information regarding marriage(s), death/burial location etc for Mary (F. or E.C.) Nave?

She was the daughter of Mary Ga-Ho-Ga Vann (Cherokee, daughter of Chief James Di-Ga-Lo-Hi Vann)b. 1795 d.1864 & Alexander Nave b.1790 d.1867.

The info for Mary Nave is a little spotty, but two different sources (one an old family source / the other familytreemaker.com) list her birth/death dates as:
b.13 July 1832 / d. 29 August 1906
or b. Abt 1832, CNE (Cherokee Nation East perhaps?); d. Aft. 1906.

The middle initial(s) is what's confusing me. The old family source had a lot of mistakes I've found, so I don't know if "E.C." is even a correct middle name or (speculation:) was notation for "Eastern Cherokee" that somehow got transposed as a middle initial. Other sources has no middle name, and the familytreemaker source (Indian surnames) has "Mary F. Nave" and further info as:
Child of MARY VANN and ALEXANDER NAVE is:

i. MARY F8 NAVE, b. Abt. 1832, CNE; d. Aft. 1906; m. _____ CHAMBERS; b. Abt. 1830.

More About MARY F NAVE:
1851 Drennan roll: Flint, 261
1880 Census [CN]: Sequoyah, 236 as Mary F Chambers
1902-07 Dawes roll: card# 1009, roll# 2731 as Mary F Chambers
1906-09 Miller roll: Salisaw, OK, ap# 4195 as Mary F Chambers
Blood: 1/4 Cherokee

I'd like to know if anyone has additional information for her, in particular a marriage to Robert Nathan McDowell Southern (AKA Mack /Mac / or MacD Southern) 29 Jan 1856 in Claiborne, Tennessee, United States?

I believe that the odds of Mary Nave, Mary E.C. Nave, and Mary F. Nave all being born & dying on the same dates/years are pretty slim & that these are all one & the same.

Thanks in advance for any & all assistance.

Quick question:

On the info provided it reads near the top
"Alexander Knave, of Hamilton Co., TN
(AKA Chickamauga),"

Is 'Chickamauga' meant to refer to that area of Tennessee, or does it mean that Alexander Nave was a Chickamauga Cherokee?

Also, I have another thread regarding his daughter, Mary Nave (my 3rd great-grandmother). Do you possibly have any of the info I seek on that thread?

Thanks again, I greatly appreciate it.

Your great-great grandfather was the son of George Nave (abt 1762-Feb 1813) and Fanny aka Veronica Moore. The family is also married into the Chief John Ross family. The following is some notes we have in our files:

This is from interesting (and obscure) collection of names of the wealthiest eastern Cherokees before the Removal.
Alexander Knave, of Hamilton Co., TN
(AKA Chickamauga), owned 14 slaves as of 1835, was up to 21 of them by 1860 (Indian Terr. census, Arkansas Co, Flint P.O.). (TN State Archives)

Henry Nave, of Walker Co., GA (near Spring Place mission) owned 8 slaves in 1835. note: Father of Alexander Nave.

Chief James Vann said that Henry Nave lived on the road near where the Chickamauga River enters the Tennessee, so both of these men must have been living practically on top of the border between GA and TN. William and Annie Ross Nave either owned no slaves, or else had already left for points west in 1835.

CHEROKEE SLAVE OWNERS IN TENNESSEE IN 1835
Total
Number
of
Owners Name of
Owner Number of Male Slaves
Owned Number of Female Slaves
Owned Total Number of Slaves
Owned Occupation of Slaveowner
Hamilton County
1 John Brown 9 3 12 Farmer
2 Alexander Knave 7 7 14 Farmer

Trail of Tears:
Belonged to Conductor: Capt. James Brown Group
CHEROKEE 1835 CENSUS: This data is from National Archives microfilm “TRA 06 The Henderson Roll" Tennessee: Knave, Alexander - 10/1/14

Alexander Nave was Asst Wagon Master of 745 persons left Cherokee Nation 31 Oct 1839 717 arrived 3 March 1739
Source: Payroll for Officials, John Ross papers.
Many Conductors or group leaders were vets of the War of 1812

1860 US Census, Arkansas aka INDIAN LANDS, CHEROKEE NATION
NARA Series: M653 Roll: 52 Page: 1175
NAVE ALEXANDER 56 M W b.
I am completing research concerning James H. Nave (1865-1949), the famed Idaho architect. James was Benjamin F. Nave's younger son. I have located that the family was in Decatur, Illinois, in 1880. He married his first wife, Mattie de Fever, in Fredonia, Kansas, in 1887.

I am in need of information as to where James went to college and any other information between 1887 and 1901, when he moved his family to Lewiston, Idaho.

You may contact me directly at sbranting@lewistonschools.net.

Steven Branting
Nez Perce County Historical Society
Lewiston, Idaho

Re: Nave Bible

Nave is a variant of Naf or Neff, and it is Swiss in origin. That is where the Nave family originated centuries ago. My immigrant ancestor was Teter Naf (Nave); his children and their decendents have the surname of Nave. You can check my family tree at Nave/Allen2. I have some documentation, but not a lot; Although, he was a patriot of the American revolution from Virginia and helped in the founding of Tennessee. There is information about him and his sons in the archives of TN and at a battle site--I'll have to look that up again. Does the Nave bible talk of the Nave family or is it just because the Nave is the center of the church?
Sharon

My Husband is the great grandson of James (b. 1854) and Mary Nave (b.1857). They are as far back as we have...She was a Sweeney and that is all we know. They had about 8 children one being J. Arthur Nave who married Blanche who had Lloyd Daniel Nave, who had my husband, Jeffery Nave. Dan (his father) has passed several years ago now and I believe there is only one of his brothers left living out in California...several of them left the N Ga Area in the late 50's...or sometime around then and all went to California.

I have this obituary :
17 Jan 1938 , Chattanooga Metro Area

Mrs. Mary L. Nave, age 79 died at her residence 107 James Street. Rossville, Ga., Sunday night.

She is survivied by five daughters, Mrs. Belle Williams, Mrs. Jennie Ellis, Mrs. Ethel Williams, Mrs. Mary Foster and Mrs. Katie Dunn; two sons, John and Arthur Nave; one brother, George Sweeney; one sister, Mrs. Ida Kelso; thirty-two grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Coulter's.

I would like to know your sources and what information on this line you have. I would greatly appreciate the help. Thank you for your time.

Good morning Wilma,
My quess is it's George Nave's second wife known as Veronica aka Fanny Moore. If the Mitchel Bible record is correct, she died in 1840 in TN. Assume she is a second wife as none of the children are named Veronica or Fanny. Also the 1817 date is after George died in 1813 so a widow would likely be referred to a Mrs. Nave. There have been a number of other researchers looking at this record which I believe is from the Tennessee State Archives, but can't seem to get anyone to go to the Walker Co., GA courthouse or TN State Archives and look for a land record where the land on Lookout Mtn is sold. I sure there is a land record, estate distribution, will or some primary records which will yield the answer. No one seem to want to do the "old fashion" type of research. Are you game?? Web info is not going to resolve the question.

Good evening, Bill. Are there any copies available of the actual 1817 Emigration Roll. On it is listed a Mrs. Nave of Lookout Mountain, GA, who made an application for the reservation land. The name above hers is coded as native, and the name below hers is listed as IRW I believe but something like that. I wonder if this Mrs. Nave is Veronica "Fanny" More who would have been William and Henry's mother, or could it even be his first wife, the one we are searching for, as William and her would have probably been married at this time as Frances Myra, my ancestor, would have been born around that time.

In 2005, The Neff Family Historical Society, Inc. of America began a Surname research project based upon and utilizing the latest Y-chromosome DNA testing technology.

The Nave \ Neff surname lines under study are those who immigrated from Switzerland and Germany to North America from the early 1600's to the end of the 1700's. The original spelling is generally found as NÄF, however common variations in America are found as Naef, Naff, Neff, and Nave.

As of Aug 2010 we have 48 DNA tests completed and 5 more in progress. Over the past 5 years we have had a wonderful response from family members wanting to confirm their linage by DNA testing. This has also allowed us to build a database of Nave \ Neff and related surname spellings and connect them to both an immigrant to the Americas and to their Swiss or European roots.

Our focus has been on family members who immigrated beginning in the early 1600's to the late 1700's. We have for verifying purposes a DNA test from a Swiss Naef connected to the family of Kappel am Albis and Hausen am Albis. This permits us to verify lineage back to the late 1400's. We also have confirmed test of Näfs from Kt. Sankt Gallen who lived in Kt. Zürich beginning in the early 1600's and whose descendants immigranted to Philadelphia in the late 1740's.

Each Nave \ Neff immigrant to America is identified by a family letter such as [A], [B], [C] Line etc and extensive genealogical records have been compiled over the past 30 years by the Neff Family Historical Society.

We selected among the several providers of DNA testing FAMILY TREE DNA, Inc. of Houston Texas. Family Tree DNA is also the prime DNA contractor for National Geographic's WORLD MIGRATION DNA PROJECT.

For more information on our DNA Project, visit our "Public Site" at FAMILY TREE DNA.

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Neff/default.aspx

For further information on our DNA project or for assistance with identifying your Nave \ Naef \ Neff \ Naff family line, contact us at "neffdna@neffnews.com"

Bill Neff Project Administrator
I think your John is the brother of my GGGG Grandfather Benjamin Franklin Wells. They also lived in Wells County for a while and then moved to Illinois. I have an open tree on this site under Holman Family tree. Just look up Benjamin Franklin Nave.

Michael Naves in 1840 census

I have found a Michael Naves on the 1940 census. He was living in Louisville, KY. Does anyone have any information on this man? I am still trying to establish the parentage of Thomas Nave/Naves of Louisville (b. 1823, d. 5 jun 1866) and I have very few leads. He was apparently between 40 and 50 years of age in 1840.

Harriet (Naves) Miller is my gggg-Grandmother. I have been trying to find more information on her father Green Norris. I have found the same document you have cited in your original message and a few others that have led me to think that actual name of Harriet's mother is either Betsy Richards or Bettie Rodgers, I'm not certain which one is the correct one being that they are both very similar.
