I would try Neatsville KY. My great great grandfather was the 1st Neat to pass through, heading to N. Carolina. There are a ton of neats still there. Just a thought.

I think I found it. After hours of digging, Hans Rudolph Neat came to PA from Germany back in 1741. luckily they kept decent records on Census back then. Let me know if I can help. Maybe one of my Grandfathers had a brother that generated your branch.

Hi - I think your Harriet is my Harriet. Harriet Neat transported from England 3/7/1817 arrived in Botany Bay(Sydney) 14/1/1818-aboard the 'Friendship". Then at some stage she was sent to Hobart, Tasmania (then Van Diemens Land)aboard the ship Duke of Wellington. In 1822 she married a William Davis he died in 1823, in 1828 she married Robert Jones. Robert was my ggg grand father. She had 2 children when she married Robert, she & robert had 6 children, she died in 1870 in Oatlands Tas. As far as I can ascertain - this is accurate. Any info about her life in UK would be g8-thanks.

I am researching the NEATE family from
Malmesbury, Wiltshire from 1737 to 1869.
My earliest ancestors are Joseph NEATE and
Hannah KELLY. They were married 10 Nov.1737
at Abbey Church in Malmesbury.
The family continued to live in Malmesbury
until their decendents moved to the US in
1869.
I would like to hear from anyone with info
about this family.
Donald Neate
Marysville, OH USA

I think it unlikely we are related but you never know, there seem to have been a lot of splits in the family, mostly in London and Essex but could well have connections in the north of England. any more information you have? Thanks for the reply
regards
Rosemary

Hi Margaret,

I was very pleased to hear from you. Regrettably, I cannot see any relationship to the people you mention.

George Neate was the son of James Neate b. 21-01-1787 in Bradford-on-Avon and Mary Coombs bapt. at Freshford 24-07-1785. They were still living in Freshford in 1851 at the time of the census. As far as I am aware, they had six other children, all christened at Freshford between 1809 and 1830, but I am not aware of any relative named Charles or Thomas during the relevant time period. There was a Thomas, son of William and Olive Neate b. 1882 in Rowley, but this was later than the dates you give.

If you are looking at the 1881 census, George and Susannah were recorded as living at Garratts Lane, Rowley, but were wrongly named 'Neath'. Their eldest son William and his wife and family lived in the same road but were wrongly named 'Neal'! Such have been the trials of tracing my family!

Whilst I do not seem to be able to assist you on this occasion, I shall be glad to help if you think I can. I live in Hampshire. If you find anything further when you visit Freshford, I would be very pleased to hear from you.

Regards Alan

Hi Alan,

The connection I have with Bath is a distant relative who lived in Monmouth and gave his place of birth as Bath year 1841.
From Monmouth one of the sons of Charles Neat moved to Wolverhampton. His name was Thomas Neat. He married a Caroline Jones in Rowley Regis, Parish of Clent.
His wife produced severel children.Eliza, Mary, Ryan(Roynor on some census), Mary, Sarah. Caroline died and on the 1871 census he has a son Thomas who is illigitimate, 2 months.
He then appears with another family which is my connection as he is my mothers grandfather. His partner( no marriage cert found)is a Mary Ann Hickman but I have no information on her as she was so much younger than Thomas.
I can tell you more if you wish but wonder if the first set of children is the connection with you as they seem to be missing from the census in 1881.
I now live in Bath and I will look at the Freshford records when I next visit the library.

Regards Margaret.

My great-grandfather was William Neate, b. Wellow, Somerset (just south of Bath) in 1849. His father was George Neate, b. Freshford, Somerset 1822. George married a Somerset girl, Susannah Harding, in 1848 and they migrated to Rowley Regis, Staffs, (not far from Wolverhampton) in about 1853. George died at Rowley in 1896.
I am not aware of a Monmouth connection, but it sounds as if I may be related to the people you seek.

She was a daughter of Robert Smith Neat, who was a son of Reuben. This interview took place Oct. 2, 1935 . She was in poor health and has since died.

"Reuben Neat lived in Kentucky, Jessamine Co.. Observing the way sentiment was shaping up against slavery and having conscientious scruples against it himself, he freed his slaves and removed from Kentucky to Floyd Co. Indiana about 1842. He had a wonderful farm south of Galena. The old two-story brick house still stands, but is unoccupied and the windows are boarded up. It was very finely finished inside. He was supposed to have been very well fixed, financially but she did not know how he made his money. Reuben and wife are buried in a cemetery near Buttontown--just a church and school house--south of Greenville, Ind."

I can give you more if you wish.
My Grandfather, Alonzo Neat was from Adair Co. Kentucky. I do not know when he was born, but he died sometime in the l930's He married Betty Grant and had four children, I only know the names of three. Myrtle, Fredrick, and Nona, who was my Mother. I do believe he had several brothers who were local politicians in Adair County. Could Barbery have been one of his ancestors? I would love to know.
