So nice to speak with you as well! Isn't the cottage wonderful? I'm just so amazed that my family knew Padrig Pearce and since my Martin insisted that his daughters (my grandmother go to school, she may have been tutored by him! I didn't get to go in but I did get to visit with my Mom's cousin Julia who lives up the road. She was so helpful with information on the daily lives of my grandmothers family, nice to know that they loved living on the farm! Anyway, thanks for checking into this. I did find a passage in a history book that quotes my Great-grandfather Martin as having said that Pearse never paid for the cottage but that my Great-grandfather and his brother considered it a donation to the cause of Ireland...I always had this vision that the troubles never touched Rosmuc, but I think I may have been wrong! Please feel free to email me at mogorman@comcast.net if you'd like. Have a wonderful day, I look forward to hearing from you again, Maureen

Hello Edmund,
I was reading your post and was wondering if there was anyway that your Nee's are possibly my Nee's. My grandmother Mary was born in Rosmuc in 1898 and I believe she had family names Dudley, possibly her Uncle or Cousin who lived in Chicago. Her father was Martin Nee, a mason who actually built the home in Rosmuc where Padrig Pearce lived. The land that Pearce cottage was built on was given to him by my Aunt's family, the Grealish's. My husband and I had the wonderful opportunity to visit the area a few years ago and it was amazing to stand where my grandmother lived. The cottage that she was born in is located behind a home that was occupied by a widow and I'm wondering if this is the land that you spoke of. I would love to hear from you to see if we can make any kind of connection. I would love to know more about my great-grandfather Martin. I heard that he was a wonderful man, very witty and full of life. My grandmother loved her Dad very much and I actually have a picture of "Dado". I also never realized how much of my family was involved with the uprising politics. I am going to start researching that time period and it's affect on my family living in Ireland. Thanks so much for any information that you can give, I look forward to hearing from you. Have a wonderful day, Maureen O'Gorman

I am happy to help. The following message was posted some time ago.

Re: John Nee and Bridget Joyce of Ireland
koslover (View posts) Posted:	14 May 2010 11:07PM
Classification: Query
Surnames: Nee, Joyce, Welby
I just encountered records for your grandfather Dudley Nee while researching some of my relatives and am hoping we can exchange information. In 1920, Mary and Bridget Nee of Turlough, Ireland (daughters of Michael Nee and Bridget Joyce), entered the US through Ellis Island. It says on their form that they were on their way to see their Uncle Dudley Nee at 4239 Grenshaw Street, Chicago, IL.

Mary and Bridget Nee were cousins of my great-grandmother Margaret Welby. Margaret Welby's mother was named Mary Joyce. Both Mary and Bridget Joyce were daughters of John Joyce.

Thus, we are related only distantly and by marriage. However, if you happen to have any information concerning these members of the Nee, Joyce, or Welby families, please let me know!
--

Dudley Nee did live on Greashaw. He was from Rosmuc which is not far from Oughterard. He married a Joyce from Tourmakeady, Maamthrasna, Co. Mayo. However, before the rising this area was considered Co. Galway. The infamous murders at Maamthrasna were carried out on their land. (There is a book on the subject.) The family still lives on the land. Dudley Nee's cousin's widow lives near the site of his birth in Rosmuc. I bought the land some years ago but I have just entered into a contract to sell it to a local man...a Joyce.
What more can I provide?

I've found info on so many Nee's and I've even found records of Philip Nee on this website but there is no record of his parents. If anyone has info please let me know.

Hello there,

I came across your post. I am doing some family research as well. My great grandfather Paul Kell(e)y came from Ballyconnely, settling in Portland, Maine in the 1800s. The majority of the Kelly family immigrated to Maine (and changed the spelling of their last name in the process!!) Paul's aunt was Ann Kelly Walsh of Boston and his sister was Anne Kelly Malley (Malia/O’Malley), who came to Maine and then settled back in Ireland. Please let me know if you have any more information that might be of interest to me!

Thanks!
Stephanie
My mother Mary picked up the nickname Swanee because she was a Nee through and through. My grandmother came over in 1891 with her sister She talked about relatives in St. Paul Mn.(Sadie Nee) but mostly relatives in South Boston. (Joyce, Flaherty, Nee.
Several years ago I met a Coleman Nee in Boston. I believe he said he had a home in Bar Harbor Maine.
Hello!

My name is Nancy Nee Hanifin. I don't know how much info you've since received from this board (or elsewheres) but I do know the family -the Everett Nee's is how our side called them. Your Coleman Nee was my grandfather's first cousin. In fact when my grandfather came over he was sponsored by your great-grandfather. Ironically (and here's where it gets somewhat complicated) my grandfather was also named Coleman Nee! To add to the confusion even more, my grandfather Coleman then married Celia Cooke's sister Mary A. Cooke (Molly) Follow?! So your grandfather Joe was my father's first cousin as well (because of Celia and Molly's relationship) I am also still in touch with the Nee's and the Cooke's in Connemara. I go back every year/Skype with them etc... If you need anymore info you can email me directly: nandy61@aol.com
PS The name Cooke is properly spelled with the "e".

Hello to all fellow Nee;s of Ballyconnelly decendants. I am new to this family tree business as i have grown up knowing so much and yet so little. My mother is a Teresa Nee, of ballyconneely daughter of festy (Festus) Nee. I have looked up the census of 1901 and 1911 of Ireland which are available on line and its funny how many of the names i see mention on this website are there. I am trying to trace back those that left here to go to America and you seem to have great resourses for that information in passanger lists. How do I access them and which sites are the best. We have very little information here really as so much has been destroyed over the years, stupidity and revolt, you know how it is. Love to hear from anyone, thank you. PS did you know that the comedian Billy Connolly's father came from the parish. regards Inagh

I have connections in the same area and have been trying to locate as close a town name as possible in IReland.
My GG grandmother was Catherine Lydon supposedly from Moyard, Co Galway. She married Tadgh(Tady) Coyne and they came to US in 1862. Catherine's sister, Jane, married Thomas Thornton from Letterfreck. Catherine and Jane's parents came over also and all lived in Marcellus, NY. Lydon parents were Patrick and Bridget (Coyne) Lydon. Also other children Mary and Patrick Jr Lydon also settled there.
All seem to be from the CLifden area of Connemara in West Galway.

Today I received a response concerning my grandfather, Dudley Nee. In looking at it I found your responses from last year. For some reason I never encountered them before. I don't do a very good job of going to ancestry.com. Probably my fault. In any event, I don think there is a tie between us. I just posted a response to another comment that is a direct tie. We probably are all related in someway. The Clan Nee has been trying to organize without much success. Sorry for the delay in responding to you.

Thanks for your reply. I will send you more info shortly. Dudley was my grandfather. He died before I was born. He was from Rosmuc, County Galway, Ireland. A few years ago I bought the land and the house in which he was born. It is on an isthmus sticking into Kilkaren Bay which is off of Galway Bay. The info I have is spotty. But it may fill in some blanks for you. Have you ever done a DNA test? It is amazing how many people pop up with our DNA. My grandmother was a Joyce. She was from Tourmakeady, Maamthrasna, County Mayo (which was Co. Galway before the time of Michael Collins). The family still has the land. It was the site of the murders written about in The Murders at Maamthrasna. My direct email is gripfast@me.com

There seems to be a few Coleman Nee's.
My Great Grandfathers name was Coleman Nee. Born June 6 and the year was either 1892 or 1893. Died abt 1947. He was from Galway, Ireland. I have paperwork from Ellis Island when he came to america on Oct 5, 1920. He was 27 and was "sposored" I guess is the term, by his brother John Nee who lived on 114 west 8th st, Boston, MA. At some point after coming to the states he married a Celia Cook and moved to Everett, MA. My grandfathers name was Joseph Nee, who died back in 1993.
There are alot of holes I'd like to fill if anyone has any info for me. my email address is snajo617@gmail.com

Hi, If you have not got the information by now I suggest
that you access the following:

www.askaboutireland.ie

Go to Griffith Valuations and put in Dudley Nee. You will
see a record of a Dudley Nee in Mweenish Island for 1855
where he is renting land from Mary Anne Nolan.

Web Site: www.nationalarchives.ie will give you the 1911
census for Ireland. Insert "Nee" and you will find many of
them. For location access "Enumerators Abstract Form" which
will give you the relevant Parish. Household Return Form A
will give you the original sheet.

His dad's name might of been John, he came to the US in the early 1900's and changed his name to Needham. He had two cousins, in New York City. Mary and Tessie Joyce, both from Ireland. I think they raised Mike (my grandfather) not sure why. Theresa Gavin just passed away in Westport Co Galway Ireland, She was related toMy grandfather. Any information would be appreciated.
Hi Tony - I hope this reaches you, as it's been a few months.

Wow - I just stumbled upon your reply by accident, and I'm glad I did! I would appreciate any help in tracking down my elusive Irish ancestors, haha. I have a little bit, but of course am always looking to fill in holes. Family lore has it that at least part of my Gannon and Nee families stayed in Ireland - I would LOVE to be able to go visit them one day soon!

Thanks a bunch and Happy New Year!
~Angela Harris

I saw your posting on Ancestry.com. I have a Catherine and Bridget Nee in family Coen/Cummins family tree. One of these sisters married Patrick (Patch) Coen from Ardrahan, Co. Galway, Ireland. The Nee's were from Seehan, Co. Galway which I believe is in the Gort area. Patrick was born in the 1830's. Do any of these folks match your research? Thank you, Theresa
