Recently received information from a cousin in North Dakota who has been in contact with a Henderson/Neelin cousin in Saskatchewan, Canada. Apparently the Canadian cousin has a few very old family items passed down through the generations including some letters and a book which contained the following information.

Jane was born November 23, 1806. The 1821 census showed Gregg Neelin a weaver, living in the townland of Tonnycrom with his wife Margaret, a flax spinner, dau. Mary & Jane & son William an apprentice weaver. Greggs mother, Jane, (maiden name Magee or McGee) a widow, lived next door to them - she died March 13,1824 & then the Neelin family emigrated to Canada in 1825 and settled on Lot 9 Concession III in Goulbourn township, not far from the James Henderson farm.

This is the Jane Neelin married to James Henderson and who's grave site is in the Munster Cemetery.

Still waiting to hear and receive more from the cousins mentioned above, but thought if you are related Keith, you might like to know what had been recently found.
Duane
Good luck with you search Keith.
Here is a link to the headstone at Munster Union Cemetery in Ontario with James Henderson and Jane Neelin.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~snaylor/On...

Thanks, Duane

It appears there might be, unless anyone has a record of her marrying twice. There is a photo (Montgomery3) of a headstone in Shillington Cemetery, Goulbourn Twp, Carleton County, Ontario of "Jane Neelin Wife of James Montgomery Died April 30 1882. Aged 75 years". There is also a photo of Jane Neelin (1806 - 1892) in Munster Union Cemetery, Goulbourn Twp, Carleton Co, Ontario married to James Henderson. James Montgomery is from Fermanagh Co, Ireland. It seems so coincidental that both Jane Neelin's (if there ARE two of them) from the same area of Ireland end up being buried in the same township and county in Ontario, Canada, but in two different cemeteries. Can anyone shed further light on this? Thanks

I think you will find Jane Neelin is buried in Shillington Cemetery in Carleton County, but was married to James Montgomery (not Henderson), unless there are 2 Jane Neelin's from Ireland born 1806 or 1807 (which is always possible). See headstone at following address below:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~snaylor/On...

If the address doesn't work, Google Shillington Cemetery in Carleton County. The photo of her headstone is under Montgomery3

I too am looking for info on her parents, as well as that for James Montgomery. Many thanks.

Regards,
Keith Braund

My gg-mother was a Neiler(n). She was Annie M. Neiler(n) born in 1849. She married Solomon Hyatt and they homesteaded in Saline County, NE. I can not find any information on her family. I find her in census reports after her marriage but can't track her before that time. Off the census, information indicates she was born in Vermont and her parents were born in Ireland. I only can locate her in Nebraska after she married Sol.

I have requested my gg-father's civil war records which may give some added information, but I have not received the documentation yet.

Marti

Does anyone have any knowledge about the surname Neilen?
My father's G Grandmother, Elizabeth (Simpson) NEILEN came to Sydney/Australia in 1858 aboard the "Forest Monarch". Her husband was Martin William Neilen but I've been unable to find any record of Martin's arrival in Australia. Martin & Elizabeth married at St Dunstan's Church, Stepney, London in 1852. Elizabeth had 2 young children, one died during the voyage and another was born in Sydney shortly after her arrival. Can anyone help me with information about Martin William Neilen, a wine merchant, who would have been born about 1825 in England.

I have been looking for years for my gg-grandmother. I finally found her in census data after she was married. All these documents indicate both her parents came from Ireland and that she was born in Vermont. I can't find any connection for her and have no idea how my gg-grandfather met her.

He was born in Ohio and migrated to Iowa where he joined the army during the Civil War. At some point after his discharge, I think, he married Annie and they moved to Saline County, Nebraska.

Annie was born about 1849 and her husband, Solomon Hyatt was born about 1845. Any information would be of great help.

Thanks
Marti

Back in the 1800s many people were illiterate and the priest or clergyman spelled the names differently by mistake and sometimes deliberately to prevent intermarriage of close cousins. The Neelin spelling seems to be limited to North America, but was originally Neilan and/or Neilen in Cavan about 1800. Do you know where your family originated from?

How far back do you go with Neilen in Holland? Is your name definitely Irish?
My uncle had contact with the original settlers in 1825 from Ireland. He said the name Neelin came from Netherlands or Neelander.

FYI ...One of my lines is Neelen, and they are from Ostfriesen/East Friesen, an area of Germany along the North Sea and just east of Holland. This is the only way I've seen it spelled on the handfull of records I've looked at here in the States. But, I haven't done any research in Germany to see some of the spelling variations. My lines came in the 1850's and settled in and around Stephenson County, Illinois (Northcentral Illinois) Janet

The lived in Goulbourne Township, Carleton County, Ontario Canada. On a copy of 1879 atlas of Goulbourne co. I see Greg Neelin listed on at least 5 different plots of land, none are too far from James and Jane's property. I am wondering if Jane and Greg are Father and daughter, sibilings or cousins. Also curious if they all came from Ireland together or at separate times. I saw the 1905 picture & info you posted on your AOL home page, very nice, do you have names to go with them?
Thanks!!!
Duane
