Posted on genforum.com, 23 April 2012

My niece called today and pointed out that our Crane genealogy shows Ebenezer Crane b. 1720, marrying Sarah Curtis and dying on 21 Jun 1744 in Mansfield Twp, Tolland, Connecticut, USA, but having many children after that, including Sarah b. 4 Sep 1770 in Mansfield Twp, Tolland, Connecticut, USA. This is not possible! Also, it is very unlikely that Sarah would marry a Neff if her mother was a Neff, but it is possible. Looks like this family needs some really serious research. There were other Ebenezer Crane's, so someone may have mixed data. I just found a record http://www.ancestraltrails.ca/walker%20for%20web-o/p1790.htm that says Mary Neff was born on 7 November 1739 in Stonington, New London County, Connecticut. [May be a different Ebenezer Crane, another Ebenezer Crane lived in Stonington?] Please contact me at jay_ingalls@pipeline.com if you find any original data that helps clarify these records!
Found nothing in the NY Census records under Neff. Since Bernard was born abt. 1890 to likely an immigrant family, you may want to look for a Nefsky or variation thereof in the pre-1890 Ellis Island records which are available on-line.

1920 US Census, PA, PHILADELPHIA, 28-WD PHILADELPHIA
NARA Series: T625 Roll: 1632 Page: 79
Neff, Bernard age 30 b. NY
Occupation: Salesman, clothing
Census lists both his father and mother as born in Russia and their "mother tongue" is Hebrew.
wife: Anna age 24 b. in PA
both her parents were born in Russia and "mother tongue" is Hebrew.
children:
Eugene age 2 b. PA

Family living on North 28th St. in Philadelphia

Name may have been changed from Nefsky or Nefski.
Appears to be living is an area of Philadelphia
consisting of both recent Irish and English immigrants
as well as Jewish immigrants from both Russia, Poland,
and Romania.

Thanks to your input triggering me to do some more searching, I finally found Amanda. She married a James Layman in Gomer, MO in 1891, had 3 children by him and was out of his life at least 3 years before the 1910 census. He was then married to a Blanche and already had a 2 yr old daughter with her. Have found no indication as to whether she died or divorced.

Yes, that is the correct parentage. In the 1850 Census (page 13) in Henry County, IN the family is listed as such:
Isaac Lutholtz, HoH age 39
Mary age 42
Jacob age 17
Isaac (Jr) age 16
Sally age 14
Elizabeth age 11
Eliza Ann age 9
Joshua age 8
Mary C age 7
Matthias (Matthew?)age 2
Uriah <1
Mariah is born 2 years later and doesn't show up until the 1860 census.

This is repeated on future census. I did some research on Eliza Ann thinking it was my Elizabeth, until I realized they were 2 different people. I believe Eliza is the one you are looking for. She married Adam Neff on 27 Dec 1855 in Henry County, IN. Here is a link to the marriage record:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&...
Hope this helps!

I have found some information regarding an Eliza Lutholtz marrying a Neff. As far as I can tell, Elizabeth Lutholtz married Wilson/William Morris and had 3 children, until he went on to a second marriage. For parentage, I believe the father of Eliza and Elizabeth was Isaac Lutholtz. He can be dound in the 1850/1870 census in Henry County, Indiana. Good luck!

They lived in Pennsylvania.

Anyone with any information regarding these people would be great, I am having a very hard time finding Harry in records and finding his wife. He was born in Russia so his name was changed.

My grandmother was Rose Elaine Stevens, daughter of Laureda I believe. Think they called her Lula (rumor?) and may have been a twin to Zula? Elaine had brothers named Mack, Claude, Neff, Bob, and sister named Evelyn who married Doug and lived in Pueblo, Colorado at one time. I think Claude is the brother who had a hook on one of his hands.

He was the son of William Henry Neff (Jul 8,1853-Sep 27,1937) and Zipporah Euphrates McKenzie (May 12,1856-Sep 27,1925), who were married on Nov 24,1874 in Keyser, W.Va. Willam's parents were John T. Neff (Nov _,1822- UNK) and Barbara Ellen Koontz (1825-191_), who married on Jan 2,1843 in Preston Co., W.Va. Zipporah's parents were Thornton Gabriel McKenzie (1831-1891) and Mary M. Greenwade (1839- UNK), married on Feb 20,1855). Thornton and Mary's son Harold died in an early Air-Mail plane accident where he crashed during bad weather near Lansing, Michigan in July of 1933. He had recently married Dorothy M. Schubert and never lived to see his son Harold Jr. born shortly thereafter. He was buried along with his parents in Riverside Cemetery, located in Cleveland, Ohio. Over 10,000 mourners covered the Cemetery's grounds for the funeral. Thornton's daughter Louise Marion Neff (Sep 3,1911-Mar 30,2009) married Clyde Edward Oltmanns (Jan 2,1914-Dec 15,2003) on Jan 26, 1946, soon after he was discharged from the Army Air Corps as a First Lt. in Ordnance, having served in the South Pacific Theater. They had one son Douglas born May 4,1952. He was widowed from his first marriage and later married Barbara, settling in a Western Cleveland suburb. There were no children.

Wenda, Thank you for your reply. Your Neff line is not connected to the Neff family of interest in Euclid, OH. Your Mathias L. Neff b. 11 April 1865 in Rockingham Co., VA is our G line of Neffs. Records for his father Elias Neff also have his family name spelled NAVE. Mathias's first marriage was to a Ada L. Leffingwell, b. abt 1865 and died 1 May 1899 in Delaware Co., IN.

From a letter mailed at Cowan, Ind. to relatives in
Rockingham Co., VA dated 3 May 1899.

"Mr. Lewis F. Neff of Jonesboro, near Muncie, Ind. sends us the following notice, which we publish, as all parties have friends and relatives in this section. Ada L., wife of Mathias Neff, died at their home in Connersville, Monday evening at 9 o'clock. She was thirty nine years of age. The remains were taken to Connersville yesterday, and funeral services will be conducted there today."

Mathias's second wife was Elizabeth Fultz b. Abt 1864 in OH whom he married 5 Oct 1901 at Delaware Co., OH. We do not have any information on children from either marriage. I can email you a group sheet if you like. Your Mathias L.
I am not sure if this is the same Neff family or not, but thought I would let you know my Great, Great Grandfather's name was Mathias Neff that married Elizabeth Leffingwell. I am not sure how many children they had, but I know of Emma, Hazel, & Lucy. Hazel was my Great Grandmother that married Homer Drennen(the paper said in their marriage announcement that he was a Harrisburg boy, lol),they had 3 children, Gertrude, Mary, & Jean. I think Mary's name was something else, but we can't think of it right now. Gertrude is my grandmother that had 3 children, Larry, Howard, and Emma. Emma is my mother that is still living and lives with me. I am the oldest of Emma's 4 children. If you want anymore information or if you think we may be related in some way, feel free to email me at whunt@hughes.net.

Thank you for your reply. The information you provided cleared up a number of unanswered questions and I believe has identified my correct Neff family line as the M-line. Heinrich Neff and Christina Neff were 1st cousins?
My Ancestry.com family tree, Gutting, Trimbelle branch, details the marriages and descendants of these Neff sisters. I’ve done my best to include reliable sources for most of the facts that I’ve recorded. Some are FamilyResearch.org research files. The ones I use do no conflict with information in other sources such as US Census records and various death records. Here is their marriage information and lists of their children:

Leah Neff b: March 24, 1811 in Heidelberg Twp., Northampton Co.,PA d: September 30, 1885 in Pulaski Co., IN m: Andrew Martin Moyer abt. 1828 in Lehigh, Pennsylvania. Source: Individual Record FamilySearch™ Pedigree Resource File.
Caroline Moyer b: 20 Nov 1829 in Lehigh PA
Lydia Moyer b: 1833 in PA
Catherine Moyer b: 13 Oct 1834 in Seneca, OH
Henry Moyer b: Feb 1837 in OH
Josiah Moyer b: 1840 in OH
William Moyer b: 1845 in OH
Andrew M Moyer b: 1846 in IN
John Moyer b: 1850 in IN
Rebecca A Moyer b: 1851 in IN
Sarah E Moyer b: 1855 in IN

Salome Neff b: 31 May 1818 in Northampton, Pa d: 15 Mar 1881 in Le Sueur, MN m: Henry Weaver. The proof of their marriage is a bit more complicated.

The Minnesota Cemetery Minnesota Cemetery Inscription Index, Select Counties for both John and Salome Weaver record Salome Weaver’s maiden name as Hruska. This information conflicts with the death records found in the FamilySearch.org-Family History and Genealogy Records; record title Minnesota Deaths and Burials, 1835-1990 for three of their children: George Weaver, parents John Weaver and Salome Nafe, Sarah Ann Liebing (my great grandmother), parents John Weaver and Salome Neff and, John F Weaver, parents John M Weaver and Sarah Neff.

I have concluded that Salome Weaver’s maiden name was Neff, not Hruska based on these records and two pieces of circumstantial evidence. 1. John and Salome Weaver along with Leah Neff Moyer, sister of Salome Neff, lived in Indian Creek, Pulaski, Indiana in 1850. 2. Leah's daughter, Catherine Moyer VanBlaricom, moved from Cass County, Indiana to Le Sueur County, Minnesota at about the same time as John and Salome Weaver made the same move.
Henry Weaver b: 1842 in OH
George Weaver b: 22 Jan 1848 in Pulaski, IN
Andrew Weaver b: 6 Jun 1852 in Pulaski, IN
Sarah Ann Weaver b: 23 Aug 1854 in Pulaski, IN
John F Weaver b: 4 Apr 1856 in Logansport, IN
Maria Weaver b: 1861 in IN

Rebecca Neff b: 1822 in Pennsylvania m1: David Harpster 31 Mar 1832 in Seneca, Ohio. Source: FamilySearch.org-Family History and Genealogy Records. m2: Ambrose French 15 Nov 1856 in Steuben, IN. Source: Indiana Marriage Collection 1800-1941. m3: Solomon Everhart. Source: 1860 US Census. The source for the Neff-Harpster marriage is weak. The 1850 US Census suggests it is correct and all of the Ancestry.com public members support it, so for the time being I’ll go along with it.
Susannah Harpster b: 1843 in Ohio
Edwin Harpster b: 1845 in Ohio
Emeline Harper b: 1845 in Ohio
Henry Harpster b: 1851 in IN
David F Harpster b: 1853 in IN
Sarah French b: 1858 in IN
Harriet Everhart b: 1860 in IN
Ella Everhart b: 1863 in IN

Again, thanks for your help.

The parents of your Leah, Salome and Rebecca are Henry Neff [M23] from Northampton Co., PA and his wife Christina Neff [M47], dau of Ulrich Neff [M7] and Dorothea Gable. You are correct that Ulrich and Dorothea Gabel Neff has 8 daughters, but this is an intermarriage. Henry Neff was the son of Heinrich Neff [M2] and wife Anna Catherine Weaver. This is an intermarriage. Henry Neff [M23] died in 1828 and his estate settlement is found in Lehigh Co., PA Administration #865. Note Lehigh Co., PA was formed from Northampton Co., PA in 1812. Names of the wives can be found in:
Sale of property by Sheriff of Northampton Co., PA, Book Sheriff 2A page 1.
Date 1 Apr. 1813 lists the following children.
Jacob Oswald and Elizabeth his wife, late Elizabeth Neff.
Henry Neff and Christina his wife, late Christina Neff.
John Meyer and Magdalena his wife Late Magdalena Neff.
Daniel Kern and Margaret wife late Margaret Neff.
Jacob Kern and Mary his wife, late Mary Neff.
Adam German and Susanna His wife, Late Susanna Neff.
Eva Neff.
Jacob Miller and Catherine His wife, late Catherine Neff.

We do not have anything beyond the name of the three daughters, Leah, Salome and Rebecca. Salome was Bapt. in the Reformed Church in Northampton Co., PA at Heidelberg in 1818. Sponsors were Henry & Eva German. Eva German nee Neff [M78] was a sister to Catherine Neff [M47] and was married to Henry German. Hope this get you into the correct Neff family line.

The Heinrich Neff [A1342] you mentioned married to Rachel Moringstar aka Morgenstern, died in Canada, Ontario, Wainfleet Twp. in 1841. His widow Rachel did move to Valparaiso, IN and died there on 10 Aug 1853. She is buried in the Lutheran Cem. at Valparaiso located on the north side of the airport. Not the family you are searching.

Any additions with sources would be appreciated.
Bill Neff
Neff Family Historical Society

Looking for the parents of Leah Neff (1811), Salome Neff (1818), and Rebecca Neff (1822) all born in Pennsylvania and living in Pulaski, Indiana in the 1850’s and 1860’s.

I have found two sources that state their parents were Heinrich Neff and Christina____. One suggests that Heinrich was the son of Abraham Neff and Catherine Schrodder of the Neff A1-Line. That seems to be unlikely because most agree that Heinrich married Rachel Morningstar, had a large family with their youngest son, Samuel being born 23 April 1817. The second suggests he was the son of Ulrich Neff and Dorothea Gabel of the Neff M-Line. This is also suspect because information from the Neff Family Historical Society states that Ulrich Neff and Dorothea Gabel had eight daughters. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Salome is my 2nd great grandmother. She married John Weaver, moved to Killenney, Le Sueur, Minnesota about 1860 and lived there until her death on 15 March 1881.
Hi Wanda,
The Neff family is extremely large. Please provide as much info as you have ie. DOB, location, parents, marriage info, death etc so you will receive some feedback. The Neff Family Historical society has documented 35,000 + names (I think that is the last figure I heard but may be incorrect?)

Good luck on your research.

Joanne Neff Harroun

OK, let me try this again.

I have some observations/corrections regarding James Neff's family/descendants:

His second wife Lillian (my grandmother) was born in 1882 in London, England.

His eldest child (by first wife Florence) was not named "Etta"; her name was "Alta".

Second child Wesley ended up in Nebraska and died abt 1968.

James B. Neff, Jr. was born Jul 10, 1914 and died Sep 6, 1978.

I believe Daniel Neff and Jennie also had a daughter named Charlotte. Their son David died abt 1979 or so.

Re Margaret Neff and John Henry: I am not aware of the three children listed. They did have one daughter, Johann (pronounced "Joanne"), born abt 1935.

Carol Neff was born 1916, not 1917, and married Emil Nelsen (1916-1992). They had three children: Ronald, Larry, and Sandra.

Thomas Neff was born Aug 16, 1918, became a farmer in Iowa, and died in Jan 1973.

Jean Neff was born Nov 10, 1920, and died Dec 10, 1978. Her last husband was Richard Dalton.

Virginia Neff (my mother) was born Jun 15, 1922. She married David DiNoia (my father) on Oct 6, 1956, and died Jan 6, 1980. I was the only child. I was born Mar 2, 1961.

Patricia Neff was born 1925, not 1930, and died in 1959. She married Ignatius Foliano and there were four children: Susan (b. Jul 15, 1944, d. Feb 1973), Maralyn (b. 1953), Christine (b. 1956) and Thomas (b. 1957).

Most of these birth/death dates can be verified through the Social Security Death Index and/or BirthDatabase.com. I also have word of mouth as most of these relatives are within living memory.

Please contact me about this Margaretta B. Neff.

I am tracking Redifers and have found a single tombstone for a Jacob Redifer (d 1858), Jacob Neff (d 1878) and Margaretta Neff (d 1892) in West Laurel Hills Cemetery near Philly. I have no idea yet what the relationship is for these three.

But your date and location for your Margaretta seem to match this one. Also, there are about a dozen people sharing a clearly extended family section for this group, but there are no other Redifers or Neffs. But there are some Blockley ties. Other names include Phys, Smith, Thomas, etc. I can tell from census cross-referencing that these are inter-related family.

Reach me directly at subscriptions@suddenlink.net and I will be able to reply with a forwarded photo of their shared tombstone and map of the burials within the Plot # Montgomery-163-164 family group.

NEFF Robert Hudson 1916- 2011 b. Canfield, Ohio - Neff family history book, “Bits and Pieces,”

DELRAY BEACH, FLA. – Robert Hudson Neff, 95, died Sunday morning, July 24, in Delray Beach.

He was born on Jan. 24, 1916, in Canfield, Ohio to Roy and Laura Noll Neff.

After graduating from Canfield High School in 1935, Bob went to The Ohio State University, graduating in 1939 with a B.S. degree from the College of Commerce.
Among other honors, he was president of the freshmen class and a member of Romophos, a sophomore class men’s honorary society.

Most importantly O.S.U. is where he met his wife, Maxine Alice Dwiggins, his lifelong friend and companion, whom he married on Dec. 21, 1940, in Toronto, Ohio.

After graduation, Bob worked in sales for Sheaffer Pen Company at Fort Madison, Iowa. He served as territorial manager for central Ohio and parts of West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

In December of 1941, he applied for a naval commission. It was granted in June of 1942 and was one of the earliest in the nation. Bob served three and a half years as a naval officer in World War II. Duty took the newlyweds to Norfolk, Va., where Bob served as instructor teaching aircraft recognition. He ended his Navy career as a lieutenant and officer in charge of all classroom instruction at the U.S. Navy Training Center in Sampson, N.Y., where 25,000 recruits were trained each session.

At the end of World War II, Bob and Maxine moved to Canfield, Ohio to make their permanent residence until the early 1980s when they became Florida residents and established a winter home at Sea Fields Club in Delray Beach. Canfield continued to be their summer home.

After World War II, Bob resumed work with Sheaffer Pen Company and in 1950 purchased Marshall’s, a gift store in Columbus, Ohio. During this period of time, he also began his career as a land developer. Between 1941 and 1949, with his father and brother, Richard, he developed Callahan Road and North Hillside Drive in Canfield, OH.

In 1950, he incorporated his own business, Neff Land Company. Eventually, he headed five land development corporations in Ohio and Florida. His developments featured high quality homesites including Sleepy Hollow Drive, where his family lived for many years. He developed 14 streets and 1,904 acres of land.

Among other achievements, he was one of Mahoning County, Ohio's earliest Eagle Scouts. In 1932, he became the tenth Eagle in the county.
In 1974, he headed a proxy battle at Farmers National Bank of Canfield to preserve it as an independent, locally owned bank.
He presented testimony to congressional committees to ensure the signing of the first U.S. strip-mine reclamation legislation. President Carter invited him to a White House Rose Garden Ceremony to witness the signing of the legislation in 1977.
In 1999, he served as Grand Marshall in Canfield’s Fourth of July Parade. Forever up to a challenge, he won the Florida State Shuffleboard Championship at the age of 80.

Among his many gifts to the community were his donation of the Eagle Cabin at Camp Stambaugh for the Boy Scouts; the purchasing of the building and grounds for the War Vet Museum; and funding for various Village Green Park projects, including several Ohio State historical markers.

At 95 years of age, he still had many projects in progress. The latest was starting an arboretum of native trees on the Abbey Delray grounds. In April, an avocado tree was the first planted. He was working on the continued development of Delray’s historical walk and overseeing the installation and dedication of six new state historical markers – one in Ohio and five in Delray.
In October, he was going to be honored at Delray’s 100th anniversary celebration.

He served on the board of Campfire Girls and was former chairman of Camp Kiwatani in Ellsworth.
Robert was a lifelong member of the Canfield United Methodist Church. Among other memberships, he belonged to the American Legion, Rotary Club, Elks Club, Canfield Historical Society, Canfield Heritage Foundation, Delray Beach Historical Society, Gyro Club, Salem Golf Club, and Inner Circle Golf Club in Delray.

Traveling was a favorite activity. He was able to visit all of the seven continents but Antarctica.

Hunting and fishing were of great interest to Bob. He fished throughout North America and in the Aegean Sea; the Nile River in Uganda, and in the lakes of Kenya. He caught rainbow trout in New Zealand and salmon in Alaska. Many elk hunting seasons were spent in Idaho, Colorado and Wyoming. Ohio Camp near Emporium, Pa., was a favorite place to enjoy nature. Robert always enjoyed life to the fullest and always looked forward to more.

He leaves his 94 year old wife, Maxine, with whom he celebrated a 70th wedding anniversary in 2010; three daughters, Jennifer Neff of Canfield, Holly (Gordon) Broom of Edwardsville, Illinois and Candace Neff of Lantana, Fla.

He also leaves seven treasured grandchildren, Mary Alexis (Hank) Mathews of Louisville, Ky., George Fiffick (Chandler) of Chicago, Max (Amy) Fiffick of Kernersville, N.C., Ben (Amy) Broom of Fortville, Ind., Becky Broom of Delray Beach, Joe (Jessica) Broom of Frisco, Colo. and Anastasia Neff of Lantana. His eight great-grandchildren will miss him greatly. They are Aaron, Joan and Adam Mathews, Sam and Isabella Fiffick, and Grace, Max and Claire Broom.

He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Gwen (Richard) Neff of Jackson, as well as a large extended family and many friends. His nephew, Bruce (Clara) Neff, resides in Canfield.

Besides his parents and an infant son, he had three brothers who preceded him in death, Charles (Evelyn), Edward (Martha) and Richard (Gwen).

The family descended from pioneer settlers in the Western Reserve of Ohio and they spent most of their lives in this village. Ancestors, Conrad and Magdalena Weaver Neff, who settled in Canfield in 1804, built a log home on Route 224, now known as the Loghurst Museum. Their great-grandmothers were from the early Canfield families of Kline, Wilson and Sanzenbacher. The Noll family emigrated from Western Pennsylvania to the Mahoning Valley after the Civil War. They were prominent in the growth of the steel industry. After 11 years of research, Robert completed a Neff family history book, “Bits and Pieces,” for future generations to enjoy.

Respecting the wishes of the deceased, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests it would be an honor to have contributions in his memory be made to the Canfield Historical Society at P.O. Box 3, Canfield, OH 44406; Canfield Heritage Foundation at P.O. Box 411, Canfield, Ohio.

On Friday, July 29, 2011 an 11:30 a.m. graveside ceremony will be held at the Canfield Village Cemetery. Lunch to follow at the Canfield Methodist Church. Casual attire please.

The Neff family has entrusted the arrangements of their loved one to the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell.

Visit www.waskofamily.com to view this obituary and send the Neff family condolences.

http://www.vindy.com/news/tributes/2011/jul/27/robert-hudson...
