Robert Negus, Samuel Coon family of RI, and NY

Searching for info on Hannah Negus Coon b. abt 1778 in Rhode Island (maybe Tiverton). Her father was Isaac Negus. Mother thought to be Deborah Perry. Hannah married a Samuel (_?) Coon in Tiverton, Rhode Island orDartmouth, MA. and then moved to New York. Later Hannah married a man by the last name of Milk maybe of Duanesburg.
She may be related- perhaps a sister to Isaac Negus Jr.of Tiverton . I found a Hannah Coon living next door to Isaac Negus in the 1820 Tiverton Census. Hannah immigrated to New York sometime after 1820. She had a daughter named Amanda Melvina Coon (b. 1819 in RI) who married Menizes Raynor Case in NY. The Case family - Menzies Case was born in Phelps, New York (father Moses Case) for a time and later Schenectady, NY area maybe Duanesburg where his uncle Truman Case lived. So families could have lived in either of those areas. Thxs

Jane Deighton who married John Lugg and Jonathan Negus was baptized and not born on 5 Apr 1609 at St. Nicholas, Gloucester, Gloucestershire. While "Ancestral Roots" and countless online trees list her death as after 1671, I have yet to find a single source citation. Has anyone come across whatever document shows Jane Deighton living in 1671? Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

There could still be a connection somewhere, but there is no Matilda listed as a sister or an aunt to (my)Harriet. In responses to my inquiries on her father John(I've posted it on the England/Middlesex/General message board),I've learned that John's mother Mary remained in the UK until her death in 1904 at the age of 83.This could imply that his father,John Sr. may have come to Canada with his son,but I believe they first settled in Nova Scotia.

I am beginning research which includes Negus family members.

My Great Grandmother was Annie Armiger nee Negus. She moved to New Zealand from Melbourne when she was 4 years old. She was born about 1879 and died at aged 50 in 1928. My grandmother Gwendonline Gertrude Walker nee Armiger kept a News paper death notice for a Robert John Negus born 1886 died 1973 He was a WW1 Veteran. I am guessing that he could have been a younger brother of Annie.

My Aunt has told me that a family Negus was in a shipwreck off the coast of Chile. While in Chile he met and married a local (or a Spanish colonist). My guess is that this pairing ended up in Australia and then emmigrated to New Zealand.

Does anyone have information that would support or add to this?

Cheers

Andrea

David is the step-son of Olive Negus Allen Babcock. James and Martha(Negus) Berry named children: James, William, Jessie, Laura, and Lucy. Martha (Negus Berry) Barnum born abt.1767 in Conn. lived with daughter Antinette(md Richard) Colton in 1850 in Eaton, Lorain, OH census.
Olive Negus Allen Babcock born abt. 1772 in Conn. (1850 census) named her daughters Martha, Phebe, Lucy(members of Baptist churches in same County). Common names, true. She was also an early member of Baptist churches in the County. Her daughter Lucy moved to OH and lived next to daughter of Thaddeus Negus(Permelia Messenger)in Huron County, OH,1850 census.
Phebe Negus Sprague born abt 1780 was married to Ephraim Sprague who was appointed guardian to Thaddeus Negus in 1803 in Onondaga County, New York.
According to what I have, Patience was the d/o of Stephen Negus and Hope Durfee. This is what I found on another site:

"Stephen Negus married Hope Durfee, and their daughter Patience married Joseph Sanford. It is in the vital records, and both Stephen and Hope mention her as Patience Sanford in their Wills when they died in early 1814 & 1815. Patience Negus did not marry William Francis."

I hope this helps.

Hi Jacky

Thanks for the message and info. I don't believe we have been in contact before apart from the email you sent me earlier today. I have only just started researching the Negus family in the last few months so don't know much apart from bits and pieces that other people in the family have told me, although no one seems to know very much. All our research has been on the family in Australia, I am yet to find any info on the generations further back than Francis Pepper Negus.

You have my email address. Will communicate through email.
Thanks again
Leah.

Hey Michelle,
We are really sluething now because I haven't found records to proove my ideas just firm connections of proximity, and family associations, ect. So, anyone working on these people please share if you find something. I haven't really searched out Stephan Negus, but the LDS sources that list him connected to Fabius Negus families say he is from Pennsylvania. There is in the LDS collection a lot of Negus stuff under the Coppock family with Quaker associations which lists a Stephen Negus in Philadelphia who has a daughter Olivia of too late a date for the Olive you mention. This Pennsylvania family does not show up in anything I have searched in connection to Fabius Negus families, but strong associations are found in Fabius with Jesse Negus. I could write you a chapter on this and ideas of other siblings so I think it is better to share by email. Do you still have the same address? kjowins@yahoo.com
Do you know of a sibling to Phebe and Thaddeus named Olive? Are there any other siblings that you know of? IS there a lot of info on Jesse Negus or is it a dead end?

Who is the Stephen Negus related to and do you have any info on him?

Dillis Sprague was Ephraim's brother and died in 1802. In the 1800 census is he married? I have no info on him except birth and death dates. But Ephraim is my line and I have most on him except for Phebe and her family.

Thanks for the info!

Hi Michelle,
Phebe Negus married Ephraim Sprague abt 1800 in Fabius. Ephraim Sprague and a Stockton were made guardians to Thaddues Negus in 1803. I think there is support that Thaddues and Phebe are siblings. That means that Jesse Negus of Kingsbury, Washington County, NY would be father to Phebe as he is to Thaddues. There is nothing to show the Stephen Negus is connected, but if you want to discuss why I strongly feel this is correct I would love to share. Dillis Sprague is also in the 1800 census next to Ephraim and might be one your looking for. I haven't traced him. kjowins@yahoo.com

My Negus family was in Fabius, NY. I am trying to figure out which Negus family they belong to.

I have Phebe Negus b.1780 in NY married Ephraim Sprague abt 1800 in Fabius NY and most of their kids wereborn there. Phebe died 1813 in Cannfield, Mahoning Co OH were their youngest son was born in 1811. Father Epraim died in 1815 and I have a note that says Josiah Epraim Sprague (son of Ephraim and Phebe Negus) was raised by an Uncle in Fabius, NY and went to Erie Co., PA when he was 18. That's where he met his wife Susannah Loomis.

I have no idea who the uncle is and have not found anything about them. If someone had Fabius 1820 census they might be able to find them.
Children
1)Lydia Sprague b.1801 and mar. Elias Willard Benson in Mar. 1820 in Fabius.
2)Polly Sprague b.1803 mar. Hiram Beach in Fabius in 1823
3)David Frost Sprague b.1805 and mar. Sarah Negus(dau of Isaac Negus and Priscilla Oxx) abt 1828 in Fabius?
4)Stephan Sprague b.1808 mar. ? Had a son Durant Sprague abt 1834
5)Josiah Ephraim Sprague b.1811 mar. Susannah Loomis 1832 in Erie Co., PA.

I believe that this Phebe Negus' father is Stephan Negus as she had a son named Stephan. Also I believe she had a sister Olive who mar. Josiah Allen as Phebe named a son Josiah.

I also think there might have been a Lucy Negus as a sister and maybe a Marth, Robert or Joseph as these are names that Olive used. (could also be Josiah Allen's family names)

All these children but Lydia would be with another family in Fabius NY on the 1820 census...any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks Michelle Cox

I'm still working on the Negus family but haven't found anything new. I do think my gg grandmother Sophronia Negus Carr has to be Permelia's sister! And daughter to Thaddeus and Elizabeth Negus. Sophronia Negus m. James Edward Carr in Fabius (per civil war pension records of Thaddeus) and they had 2 sons in the civil war, Daniel Webster Carr and Thaddeus William Carr. Sophronia and James Carr lived in Sodus, Wayne Co, NY where they farmed and had 4 children (who survived) and then moved to MI. Sophronia died of thyphoid fever in 1868. Paula

My great grandfather is Thomas Negus who I believe was a brother of Joseph Negus. Thomas's parents were also Francis Pepper Negus and Mary Richards.
Thomas Negus was christened in Stagsden 8/19/1694, father's name: Hennery.
On 7/18/1714 Thomas Negus married Elizabeth Neale in St. Paul Bedford.
These children were born to Thomas and Elizabeth Negus in Stagsden after that marriage.
Chr. 5/29/1715 John
Chr 12/22/1717 Elizabeth; Thomas is a farmer
Chr 4/17/1720 Thomas
Chr 2/10/1722 Robert; Thomas is a farmer
Chr 5/27/1726 Ann; farmer again
Chr 2/25/1727 Sarah
Chr 3/23/1728 John
There is no burial record for the first John Negus.
The only Thomas Elizabeth marriage in Stagsden in this time period was Thomas Negus married Elizabeth Osborn on 2/13/1702.
On 5/7/1707 Elizabeth wife of Thomas Negus died. No children were born to Thomas and Elizabeth Negus between 1702 and 1715 in Stagsden.
On 1/25/1708 Thomas and Catherine Negus started having children.

From this I think it’s probable that the Elizabeth mother of John, et al. was Elizabeth Neale.
I know nothing about her, except that she is not the daughter of John Neale and Ann Bentley born 8/27/1696. That Elizabeth died in 1698.

I am retired so I can spend a lot of time doing research. I am posting on Ancestry what I have found about Hannah. I believe she is the Hannah in the 1841 census in Bedford, daughter of John Marshall.
The family seems to have been in Kent in 1822 when daughter Harriet was christened. They were in India in 1823 when Hannah was christened. There is a gap in children from 1823 until 1831 when they were back in Kent.
The dates of the christenings are:
Harriet: 6/2/1822 Canterbury Kent
Hannah: 4/30/1823 Kaira India
Adelaide West (married William S Foll) 8/17/1831 Chatham, Kent
Hilare: b. 10/21/1836: Ampthill Bedford
Patience: b. 12/15/1840 Ampthill Bedford

Hannah and Patience never married. Hilare appears to have died young.

The ages in the 1841 census aren't accurate, but I think they are explainable if you realize that Mother Mary Ann trimmed five years off HER age when she reported to the census taker in 1841.
John Marshall may have been a civil servant when he was in India. He became a notary, a recorder of births and deaths, and an actuary once he moved to Bedford between 1831 and 1836.
Hannah Clara is the only child recorded for Mary Ann Nichols and John Marshall when they were in India. Their return to Kent in 1831 would correspond to the transfer of the military station out of Kheda in 1830.
I have a birth certificate for Horace Negus from Victoria Australia, as well as his burial papers and naturalization papers. I have the marriage certificate for Edwin William Negus and Eliza Ambrose, which gives Edwin's POB as Bedford, Eliza'S POB as Poplar Middlesex, his parents as William, butcher, and Clara (Marshall) Negus, and hers as Joseph Ambrose, miner, and Frances (North) Ambrose. The Neguses lived in Inglewood, and Ambrosees lived in Tyler. Frances died before Joseph and Eliza moved to Australia in 1862.
I also spent some time in the library in Melbourne, and found that there were numerous Neguses in Melbourne up until 1900, when they all seemed to have vanished. I subsequently traced them to West Australia, where many of the descendants of the older kids of Edwin and Eliza still live.
When Horace came to the US in 1904, he left from Perth.
I'll send you my e-mail by the message function.
George the butcher in the marriage license of John I suspect is the same George the innkeeper in the 1851 census, so there may be only one George in Bedford in 1841.
Dave

Husbourne Crawley
Lives with Edward Abbott and family

Sarah died in 1886 in Woburn. John died in 1905 in Ampthill, age 81.
George and Elizabeth Negus had three children christened in Husbourne Crawley at the parish church:
Emma 5/18/1816
William Edwin and Samuel both on 3/4/1822.
John (10/23/1823, matching yours) and Joseph (5/8/1828) both had their births recorded at the Baptist Church in Ridgmont. The IGI does not show a Baptist Church in Husbourne Crawley, so if George and/or Elizabeth became a Baptist between the christening of William and Samuel, and the birth of John, the nearest Baptist church would have been in Ridgmont. John consistently gave his place of birth as Husbourne Crawley in the census.
A further note on Elizabeth Darker. There is no one with a surname of Darker in either the Ridgmont or Husbourne Crawley parish registers. And it would seem unlikely that Elizabeth Darker (married 8/30/1800, not 1810 as I wrote before) would start having children in 1816 and continue on into the 1820’s. A George Negus, born in Bedford, age 71 lives in Leicester in 1851. George Negus living in Husbourne Crawley was 64, so he was unlikely to have married in 1800.
This conversation has really been helpful for me. Spurred by thinking about William and Clara, I found in IGI:
Hannah Clara Marshall. chr. 4/30/1823 in Kaira (now Kheda) India. Parents John and Mary Ann. According to Wikipedia, Kheda was a major military station from 1803 until 1830. There is a bit of an age discrepancy, but it certainly is promising.
I need to spend more time looking at my notes before I reply.
The printed parish registers that I use stop at 1812, so I can't verify this, but the IGI transciption of the Ridgmont parish register lists Elizabeth Arnold and Thomas Negus as parents of Joseph Negus chr. 1828 and John Negus chr. 1823. There is a discrepancy in the age of John between the IGI christening and the census data from 1841 to 1881, which have him born about 1825. I have the found the IGI to have many, many typos. I will have a chance to see the microfilm of the original records soon, and if the discrepancy does exist, I may have to re-evaluate.
I think you have confused my tree (Peacock Family Tree) with a tree (West Family Roots, Branches, and Twigs) written by descendents of Allan Negus, the older brother of Horace.

I believe my George's wife is Elizabeth Arnold, not Elizabeth Darker.

A George Negus married Elizabeth Darker at St. Cuthbert's in Bedford in 1810, but I do not believe they are the couple in the 1851 census.

The census gives the place of birth of both George and Elizabeth as Ridgmont. Elizabeth Arnold was chistened at Ridgmont in 1792. George Negus and Elizabeth Arnold were married at Ridgmont in 1815.

Elizabeth Arnold is the same age as the 1851 census Elizabeth. The Ridgmont Parish register notes she was age 3 at baptism. She was baptized the same day as her younger brother Isaac.

The 1851 George Negus was baptized 1/30/1785 in Ridgmont, son of Thomas and Ann Negus (who were called “poor”.) I believe Ann was Ann Betly, who married a Thomas Niggous/Negus in 1775 in Ridgmont.

As for Mary, I think she is not the daughter of Clara. Clara would have been 15 when Mary was born, which, if not impossible, surely is unlikely. Clara regularly had children in 1851, 1852, and 1854 after she married in 1850.

I don’t interpret the mark in the last column as being an indication that Mary was deaf or blind. It appears to be made with a different pen than that of the census taker. I suspect it is a mark made by a clerk while the census was being tabulated. Mary is a scholar. I am not certain about the situation in England, but it seems unlikely in 1851 if she were deaf or blind, she would be attending school.
